On 20th May, a Bhopal court refused to allow a second post-mortem of model and actress Twisha Sharma at AIIMS Delhi but directed officials to urgently look for facilities across Madhya Pradesh that can preserve her body at ultra-low temperatures to prevent decomposition.
Judicial Magistrate First Class Anudita Gupta dismissed the application filed by Twisha’s family seeking a fresh autopsy and forensic examination at AIIMS Delhi. However, the court took note of concerns raised by the family over the preservation of the body.
Court asks police to find ultra-low temperature facility
During the hearing, the court was informed that Twisha’s body is currently kept at AIIMS Bhopal mortuary at minus 4 degrees Celsius. But authorities at the institute reportedly told police that preservation at minus 80 degrees Celsius would be needed to stop decomposition.
The court noted that no such facility is available in Bhopal and directed the Station House Officer of Katara Hills police station to immediately collect written information from higher medical institutions across Madhya Pradesh regarding the availability of low-temperature preservation systems and submit a report without delay.
The order came amid the growing dispute over the initial postmortem findings. The report described the cause of death as “asphyxia due to antemortem hanging by ligature”, while also mentioning multiple antemortem injuries, described as simple injuries possibly caused by blunt force on other body parts.
Twisha’s family questioned the findings and said the belt believed to have been used in the hanging was not provided to doctors during the autopsy at AIIMS Bhopal, affecting the scientific examination of the ligature marks.
Meanwhile, police also informed the court that there was a strong possibility that Twisha’s husband, lawyer Samarth Singh, who is absconding, could leave the country. Investigators sought action regarding his passport, but the court said he must first be heard and issued him notice to explain why such steps should not be taken.
Background of the case
Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old model and actress from Noida, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. She was around two months pregnant. She had married lawyer Samarth Singh in December 2025 after meeting him through a dating app in 2024. Police have registered a case against Samarth and his mother, Giribala Singh, under provisions related to dowry death and harassment, while Samarth remains absconding. A reward of ₹10,000 has also been announced for information leading to his arrest.
Twisha’s family says she had been facing mental pressure, physical abuse and stress related to work and pregnancy and had wanted to return to Noida. They have refused to perform her last rites and demanded strict action and a court-monitored investigation.
A six-member SIT is probing the case, including claims of harassment and possible destruction of evidence. CCTV footage from the house has also surfaced, while Giribala Singh has denied the accusations and made claims regarding Twisha’s medical history and treatment, which police say currently have no supporting evidence.
