Bihar: At least 4 dead, several injured after massive fire rips through ICU at private hospital in Muzaffarpur

At least four patients died, and many others were injured after a massive fire erupted at a private hospital in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district early on Thursday, 4th June, triggering panic among patients and their families. The incident took place at Prasad Hospital in the Brahmpura area, where a blaze broke out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the fifth floor.

Fire breaks out in the ICU

According to officials, the fire spread quickly through the ICU, filling the area with thick smoke and making rescue operations difficult. The fire department received an emergency call at around 3:55 am and immediately dispatched teams to the hospital.

Fire department official Ram Niwas Pandey said that around 15 to 20 patients were rescued from the ICU. Two of them died at the spot, while the others were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. He added that the department had not yet received an update on the condition of the evacuated patients.

Patients were shifted to other hospitals

Muzaffarpur District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen said that around 13 patients were admitted to the ICU, while a few others were being treated in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) when the fire started. Family members later shifted the surviving patients to different hospitals in the area.

The District Magistrate confirmed that at least three deaths had been reported and said officials were trying to contact the families of the deceased and other patients. He also stated that the fire had been brought under control and legal procedures were being carried out.

Cause under investigation

Preliminary findings suggest that a short circuit may have triggered the fire. Hospital authorities also suspect an electrical fault in the ICU and said they are cooperating with the administration. An inquiry has been launched to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Officials fear the death toll could increase as information about several patients is still being verified. The administration has assured that further action will be taken once the investigation is completed.
