Dispur Police have arrested a 28-year-old Muslim auto-rickshaw driver after a young Hindu woman accused him of abducting her and trying to sexually assault her on Sunday, 7th June night in Guwahati. The accused has been identified as Monowar Hussain, a resident of Assam’s Nalbari district.
According to police, the woman filed an FIR on Monday morning, 8th June, after managing to escape from the driver. Acting quickly on her complaint, officers launched an investigation and arrested Hussain. The auto-rickshaw used in the incident, bearing registration number AS-01TC-5416, was also seized.
The route changed after boarding near the Novotel Hotel
The Hindu woman had boarded the auto-rickshaw near the Novotel Hotel and was heading towards Hotel Bluemoon. During the journey, the driver reportedly changed the route and drove her away from the intended destination.
Police said Hussain took the woman to a secluded location instead of following the regular route. At the isolated spot, he tried to sexually assault her. During the struggle, the woman’s mobile phone was damaged.
The victim somehow managed to escape
Despite the situation, the woman resisted and was able to escape from the spot. She later approached the police and lodged a complaint detailing the incident.
Following her statement, the police registered a case and began legal proceedings against the accused. Investigators are continuing to examine all aspects of the case, and further investigation is underway.
