A video has been going viral on social media, showing a woman desecrating a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and being confronted by angered locals. The video triggered widespread outrage on social media. The incident reportedly occurred in the Sasane Nagar locality of Hadapsar, Pune.
The viral video shows CCTV footage of the woman walking towards a Shivaji statue, removing her slippers, and throwing them at the statue. The woman’s condemnable act angered the locals, who traced and confronted her.
As visible in the viral video, the woman was surrounded by angry locals. A woman from the crowd smeared ink on the woman’s face and slapped her repeatedly. The woman was later handed over to the police. The police assured the locals that appropriate legal action would be taken against her. It is not yet known what motivated the woman to commit such an act.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is a revered historical figure not just in Maharashtra but across the country. The Maratha king ruled during the 17th century and fought with Muslim invaders to establish Hindavi Swarajya (self-rule). He is widely celebrated in Maharashtra for his valour and sacrifice. This is the reason the woman’s derogatory act attracted such outrage from the locals.
