Communal tensions erupted in the Parel-Chinchpokli area of Mumbai in Maharashtra on Wednesday night (26th August), after a Muslim mob attacked Hindus, raised provocative slogans, and tore posters during an Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession.
As per reports, the incident occurred near the Laxmi Cottage building between Parel and Chinchpokli area when the procession was passing through it. What started as a heated altercation soon led to violent clashes and stone pelting. The situation was brought under control after police intervention.
As soon as the police received information about the clashes, senior police officers reached the spot and pacified the situation. The police also had to use force to disperse the crowd. Several Police personnel were deployed to prevent the situation from further escalating.
Later, Joint CP (Law and Order) Dr Manoj Sharma said in a statement that the situation had been brought under control. He urged people not to believe rumours. “There is no such issue anymore. Senior officers are on-site, and the situation is completely calm. Please do not believe rumours,” Joint CP Sharma said.

As a temporary measure, police blocked roads leading towards Parel-Chinchpokli to prevent further escalation. By the morning, normalcy was restored in the area with traffic moving smoothly and shops opening as usual.
According to a Parel resident, Muslims participating in the Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession displayed unruly behaviour as they rode on bikes carrying flags and raising provocative slogans as the procession passed near the Laxmi Cottage building. This led to a heated exchange between the Muslims and the Hindus. The situation escalated to violent clashes and stone pelting.

The local said that the Muslims also tore the banners and posters near the Laxmi Cottage building, further aggravating the situation. He added that several people were injured during the clashes and were taken to the KEM Hospital in Parel for treatment. He said the police detained some people and took them to the police station.
This incident comes four days after eggs were hurled at a Ganpati procession in the Mazgaon area of Mumbai, sparking widespread outrage. The police arrested a delivery boy named Danish Sher Khan in connection with the incident. Danish told police that he threw eggs at the Ganpati procession because he was ‘irritated’ by the smoke from firecrackers that burst during the procession.
