The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) swept the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election, as poll results were announced on Saturday (September 19, 2026). The RSS’ student wing won three out of the four positions in the unions, including the post of DUSU president.
ABVP’s Yash Dabas won the President’s post by defeating Congress’ student wing, the National Students’ Union of India’s candidate, Vijay Meena, by 2,053 votes. Dabas secured 24,576 votes while Meena secured 22,523 votes. Riya Chhawdi from the ABVP secured the secretary’s position by defeating NSUI’s Namrata Chaudhary with 21,650 votes.
The post of Joint Secretary was won by ABVP candidate Lakshya Raj Singh, who got 16,615 votes and defeated NSUI’s Gopal Choudhary and Vishesh Yadav from Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha. Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the position of Vice-President by defeating ABVP’s Ishu Maurya and NSUI’s Virr Chatrath.
The elections for the four posts of the student union were held on September 18, 2026. A total of 20 candidates contested the elections, which are held annually. The ABVP and the NSUI fielded candidates for all four posts, while left student organisations AISA and SFI contested together.
Voting was held at 52 polling centres in two shifts. For day-shift students, polling was held between 8:30 am and 1 pm on Friday, while for evening-shift students, voting took place from 3 pm to 7:30 pm. 40.46% of around 1.51 lakh eligible student voters turned up to cast their votes in the election. The counting of the votes commenced around 8 am on September 19, 2026. As the counting of votes progressed, the fight between the ABVP and the NSUI intensified, creating uncertainty around the results till the final rounds. However, the ABVP emerged victorious after a total of 20 rounds of counting.
The DUSU election results are significant in light of the student outrage manufactured by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) during the recent protests regarding the NEET paper leak. In the name of raising students’ issues and demanding accountability from the Modi government, CJP leaders offered a platform to various leftist and anti-national elements. The protests, which started out as an agitation for students’ interests, soon turned violent and witnessed anti-social and anti-national elements taking over.
The DUSU poll results have dismantled the propaganda and the false narrative that the young Gen Z voters are opposed to the Modi government or the RSS. The results come as a major setback for all the attempts to project the protests as an expression of Gen Z’s anger and outrage against the BJP and the RSS.
