Delhi: AAP leaders Saurabh Bharadwaj, Jarnail Singh and others booked for assaulting head constable during Arvind Kejriwal’s Tilak Nagar visit

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Saurabh Bharadwaj, Jarnail Singh, Sahib Singh, as well as other party workers, have been charged with assaulting a head constable on 28th September (Monday). The incident happened when Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited Tilak Nagar. The policeman, Ashok Kumar, was in plain clothes and was reportedly recording the event when he was surrounded, heckled and assaulted by AAP members.

The eyewitnesses also revealed that AAP officials got into a heated argument with the police personnel, which was also caught on camera. He can also be seen being grabbed, pushed and shoved aside in the footage. His colleagues attempted to rescue him as they walked beneath a flyover, but the accused did not allow him to leave. The party has been accused of “taking the law into their own hands and disrespecting the police.”

Afterwards, Kumar was taken for a medical examination, after which action was initiated against the accused. Sections 221 (voluntarily obstructing a public servant in the discharge of public functions), 132 (assault or use of criminal force against a public servant while they are discharging their duty) and 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have been invoked in the case.

According to reports, the police inquiry will determine the order of events and the precise role of the individuals listed in the First Information Report (FIR). Notably, AAP MLA Jarnail Singh has been the subject of two FIRs in the past two days. He was previously booked after the PWD filed a complaint asserting that he interfered with government operations and prevented a public official from carrying out his duty.

On 27th September (Monday), a different dispute unfolded in Tilak Nagar. A confrontation occurred as Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma was in the neighbourhood inspecting road repair work when he was accused of slapping Sahib Singh, a man connected to Jarnail Singh. Sahib Singh is already accused of attacking a municipal employee. The AAP demanded a FIR against the minister. Delhi Police had filed a non-cognisable complaint in the matter.
