Tamil Nadu: College student accuses TVK leader Christopher of sexual harassment on pretext of offering lift; later withdraws complaint, fuelling allegations of intimidation

A Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader has been accused of sexually harassing a college student in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. The man is identified as Christopher, a member of the TVK central district executive committee. The incident happened on 22nd October (Thursday) when the victim, along with another student who is also a TVK member, was waiting for a bus on their way back from college in Nagercoil.

The man claimed he was going in the same direction and offered to give them a ride. According to the complaint, Christopher told them, “I am going to Kulashekaram anyway; I will drop you off there.” They accepted the offer and climbed into the car because it was raining at the time.

He first dropped off the other young woman at Moolachal and then continued the journey. However, as the rain poured down, he stopped the vehicle along the way and sexually assaulted the shocked student. She protested and tried to exit the car, after which he left her close to her home and ran away.

The complainant is a second-year MA student, and the other young girl is also a student at the same college. They are friends and commute together most of the time. A case had been registered against the perpetrator, who was absconding.

However, the student then submitted a written plea for withdrawal of her complaint and to have “no action be taken against him,” a day later. This led to assertions that members of the ruling party used intimidation, power, and money to sway her and save the offender from prosecution.

The incident has triggered sharp reactions from the opposition. “What action is Chief Minister Vijay going to take against his party official who is accused of sexually harassing a college student in Kanyakumari,” Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi Rajathi Karunanidhi asked.

She attacked TVK for harbouring people with criminal charges, adding that the party has “simply become a tent filled with history-sheeters and sex offenders.” She also told Vijay to “conduct a self-examination of whom all he has included in his party before offering advice to the public.”

“Protection must be provided to the affected student, and legal action must be taken without bias against the accused. If not, we will teach this government a lesson through democratic struggle united with the people,” she stated.

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) similarly expressed, “Someone who lacks the capability to protect Tamil Nadu women from his own party executives has not even an iota of qualification to continue in the post of chief minister.”
