AAP MLA Atishi Marlena puts up an endearing anecdote about her niece and Netflix, except it is factually incorrect

A week after Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party came back to power with a landslide victory, newly minted MLA Atishi Marlena took to Twitter to share an endearing anecdote involving her niece and Netflix. Marlena shared how she was ‘negotiating’ with her niece about what to watch on the online streaming platform Netflix when her niece insisted they watch Harry Potter.

The witty ‘niece’ quipped that the MLA must listen to ‘janta’ and hence Marlena relented. The duo watched Harry Potter on Netflix. However, there is one issue. Netflix does not stream the popular series.

Netflix does not have Harry Potter series

Netizens were quick to point out this little discrepancy in Marlena’s tweet.

Netizens also wondered if she had cooked up the whole story to appear funny on social media.

Amusingly, in their bid to catch Netflix for free, AAP social media handler also requested for Netflix password so that he/she could chill.

Marlena had earlier contested 2019 Lok Sabha elections against BJP’s Gautam Gambhir where she lost. While she had been portrayed as education reformer in Delhi’s government school, Arvind Kejriwal has conspicuously kept her out of the newly constituted Delhi cabinet.

British MP Debbie Abrahams spreads misinformation over her visa, AltNews cofounder helps her, questions Indian government over false claims

On Monday, Debbie Abrahams, a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom from the Labour Party, was denied entry to India by the government after her e-visa was cancelled. A day after British MP Debbie Abrahams was denied entry into India, the government explained that the denial was because of her “involvement in anti-India activities”.

The British MP, whose Indian Visa was rejected, had flown to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on Monday morning. Despite being aware of the fact that her visa was invalid, Abrahams had outraged claiming that her visa was ‘revoked’ after it was granted. She also claimed that it was done deliberately because she had been critical of the Indian government ‘over Kashmir human rights issue’.

Abrahams had even claimed that she was not allowed despite having a valid visa and it was ‘revoked’, implying that her visa was ‘revoked’ after she landed in Delhi. She had also written that she had tried to get a ‘Visa on arrival’.

Soon the ‘liberal-secular’ media took offence against the Modi government for denying space to their new anti-India hero and resorted to false propaganda on social media by toeing the same line as Abrahams.

Samsays, one of the co-founders of the ultra-leftist propaganda website Alt News, resorted to a disinformation campaign by questioning the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Indian High Commission in London, basing her claims on Debbie Abrahams’ rants.

As the government justified its action on denying her a visa, Abrahams took to Twitter again to claim that she was issued a valid visa by the Indian authorities, granting permission to travel to India. It can be seen in the image that a visa was issued to Abrahams to travel to India on 7th October 2019, valid till 5th October 2020 for business purposes.

However, Abrahams did not present the complete details of her visa rejection case, rather posted misleading half-truths to portray that she had indeed a valid visa.

The same propaganda was further spread by Alt News co-founder to imply that the British MP was sent back to her country arbitrarily for her stance on Kashmir. By tweeting an image of Abrahams’ blatant lies on the issue, the Alt News founder resorted to further the false propaganda rather than correcting the British MP with facts.

Fact Check:

The Ministry of External Affairs had issued an e-business visa to British MP Debbie Abrahams on 7th October 2019, valid till 5th October 2020 for business purposes. However, her e-Business Visa was revoked on 14 February 2020 on account of her indulging in activities which went against India’s national interest.

“The rejection of the e-Business Visa was intimated to her on 14th February”, reported India Today.

It is pertinent to note that granting a visa and rejection or revocation of a visa or electronic travel authorisation is the sovereign right of a country and the government of India can make a decision on granting a visa based on its national interest and does not bound by any other international rules.

The Indian government sources had also informed that Abrahams was notified of her rejected visa status well ahead of her journey. However, the UK MP went ahead with her journey to IGI airport in Delhi without a valid visa.

The fact is, Abrahams continued her outrage displaying an image of her visa, which was issued last year. She had never bothered to share the image of her rejected visa.

Following her visa rejection, Abrahams took a new turn as she tweeted that she had flown to India to visit her Indian relatives, who she was ‘meant to be visiting’ and also said that she had Indian members of staff accompanying her. With the claim of visiting her family and relatives, Abrahams asserted that the Indian government should have given her visa to enter the country.

However, her claims of visiting family on a business visa also falls flat as the previously issued e-Business Visa was meant only for business meetings, which can not be used for visiting “family and friends”, as claimed by her. This is not permitted as per the rules and a separate visa request has to be made for granting permission to meet friends and family.

In a tweet, former foreign secretary Nirupama Rao explained, “Visiting family and friends only when holding an e-business visa is a distortion of purpose. A visitor visa is what you need. She should, strictly speaking, have been aware of this since she is herself a lawmaker in her country and should be acquainted with such requirements.”

The point is, regardless the classification of her visa, or its purpose, Abrahams was not in the possession of a valid visa on Monday, 17 February, because her visa was rejected on 14 February itself.

Journalist Aditya Raj Kaul had shared an image of Debbie Abrahams’ rejected visa, dated 14 February. Interestingly, neither the British MP or her ‘secular-liberal’ champions in India had bothered to share that.

As is evident here, Abrahams was not in possession of a valid visa as on February 17 and was hence not allowed entry. It is entirely the prerogative of a sovereign nation to decide on issuing or denying a visa to a particular foreign national. Regardless of when Abrahams’ earlier visa was issued, or its purpose, she was restricted from entering India because she did not have a valid visa.

The government of India had also clarified that there is no provision for ‘Visa on arrival’ for UK nationals. It is not clear whether Abrahams was under the illusion of some colonial privilege that she thinks enables her to enter into a sovereign nation’s territory without a valid visa.

The claims of victimhood for ‘standing up for Kashmir human rights’ also sound hollow. India has not stopped her from voicing her opinion or doing her politics in any way. But the entry into a sovereign nation is entirely the government’s prerogative and it is not clear on what basis the British MP is trying to assert her right to enter India without valid documents.

Number of confirmed cases outside Hubei coming down, confident of winning battle against coronavirus: Chinese envoy thanks India for help

As China struggles with a novel coronavirus outbreak that has affected more than 72000 people and killed 1900 people till now, China has thanked India for showing kindness and timely help during the outbreak.

As per reports, Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong expressed gratitude for India’s help to his country in the struggle against coronavirus.

Referring to Indian Doctor  Dwarkanath Kotnis who died while treating injured soldiers in conflict with Japan in the 1940s, who is a revered figure in China, Ambassador Sun said, “At these difficult times, I am deeply touched by the kindness of Indian friends. All these reminded me of the time when Dr Kotnis saved many lives and made a great contribution to the Chinese people’s liberation cause.”

He added, “The Indian side assured the readiness to stand by China and provide the assistance that India can, to face this challenge. It also reminds me of what I experienced during the outbreak of SARS in 2003. At that time, I had the honour to receive a delegation from India led by the then foreign minister George Fernandes who visited Shanghai during the epidemic.”

He asserted that China has put in place multi-level control and prevention mechanisms and they are confident that they will win the battle against coronavirus. The envoy explaining his preparedness against the deadly epidemic said, “China has allocated RMB 80 billion to contain the disease and the government has sufficient resources and policy tools to cope with economic fluctuations following the epidemic.”

Thanking Prime Minister Modi, Ambassador sun said, “Recently, PM Modi sent a letter to President Xi Jinping, expressing his recognition of the tremendous effort made by the Chinese government to deal with the outbreak.”

India had lifted the export ban China and had sent two large consignments of medical supplies to China recently.

The Chinese envoy also claimed that the cure rate of infected patients has been increasing and the number of confirmed cases outside of Hubei province has been coming down gradually. He also called the reports of the virus being leaked from a lab as rumours and stated that the virus is not man-made, it has come from nature.

Action against terror funding ‘not enough’, FATF subgroup recommends retaining Pakistan in grey list

0

The Financial Action Task Force(FATF) subgroup International Cooperation Review Group(ICRG) has recommended retaining Pakistan in the ‘grey list’ citing that Pakistan failed to take appropriate action against terror financers.

The FATF had placed Pakistan on the grey list in 2018 making it difficult for Pakistan to get financial aid from IMF, ADB, European Union, and the World Bank. After a report submitted by Pakistan in October 2019, it was extended till February 2020.

In the 5-day plenary session currently ongoing in Paris, the ICRG has recommended retaining Pakistan in the grey list. A final decision regarding this is to be taken on Friday, 21 February.

In October 2019, the Asia Pacific Group (APG) of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) had published its annual report (Mutual Evaluation report of Pakistan) which stated, “With the exception of some recent actions discussed in detail below, Pakistan has not taken sufficient measures to fully implement UNSCR 1267 obligations against all listed individuals and entities – especially those associated with Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT)/Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), and Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF) as well as the groups’ leader Hafiz Saeed.”

26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed was sentenced to five and a half year jail term by Pakistan earlier this month. The action was taken ahead of the FATF meeting. Though the sentencing was timed carefully to get noticed by the FATF plenary, Pakistan’s real intentions regarding terror funding and action were exposed when the nation reported that JeM chief Masood Azhar has ‘gone missing’ with his family.

As per a report in New Indian Express, Pakistan has also reported to the FATF that of the 16 UN-designated terrorists in their country, ‘7 are dead’ and 7 have applied to the UN for withdrawal of travel and financial restrictions.

To escape from the looming blacklist, Pakistan needs the voe of 3 countries. Malaysia and Turkey had declared their support for Pakistan in last month’s meeting in Beijing. It had also got the support of current FATF chair China.

To escape from the grey list and come to the white list, Pakistan will need the 12 out of 39 votes.

Kerala: Congress workers distribute beef curry outside police station in Kozhikode

Amidst reports that beef was excluded from menu for state police trainees, Congress workers in Kerala distributed beef curry and bread outside Mukkam Police station in Kozhikode district on Tuesday.

As per reports, the distribution of beef curry was started by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary, advocate K Praveen Kumar. Alleging Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s ‘Sangh leanings’, Kumar said Congress will ‘expose Vijayan’s double standards’.

Kerala Congress workers distributed beef despite clarification by the Kerala Police that the reports of omission of beef from menu are baseless.

It was not so long ago that a youth Congress worker in Kannur had slaughtered a calf on the road, in full public view. He had also later gone on to claim that he had committed the act after the approval of the state Youth Congress president. Rajil Makkutty had claimed that not only the state Youth Congress president was aware of his plan to slaughter a calf on the road, but he had also encouraged him to carry out his ‘protest’ strongly. Another Congress MLA from Kerala hosted a beef party to ‘express solidarity’ with cow slaughter and to ‘strengthen secularism’ in India.

I am saving a big deal for later, we will have a very big deal with India: US President Donald Trump

Ahead of his visit to India, US President Donald Trump said that he really likes PM Modi and is saving a “very big deal for India” for later, perhaps before the US elections later this year.

Talking to reporters in Washington ahead of the scheduled visit to India, Trump said that he would like to do a very big trade deal with India. In July 2019, the US ended its preferential tariff to USD 5.6 billion export trade after it was convinced that New Delhi has not assured the US that it will provide “equitable and reasonable access to its markets”. India and US were negotiating a trade package to resolve bilateral issues but could not conclude on a mutually acceptable ground.

“We are not treated very well by India but I happen to like Prime Minister Modi a lot,” Trump had reportedly told the reporters.

US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit India between 24th to 26th February, 2020 along with his wife, First Lady, Melania Trump. About seven million people are expected to welcome US President from the airport to Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad where ‘Namaste Trump’ (earlier Kem Chho Trump) event is planned.

AltNews tries to shield Jamia rioters, netizens demand complaint be filed with IFCN

The videos that have surfaced on social media from Jamia Milia Islamia University on the fateful night of the 15th December, when Delhi Police was forced to enter the campus in order to flush out miscreants engaging in violence against the Citizenship Amendment Act, have created quite a furore. Amidst all the controversy, AltNews was engaged in a dedicated effort to shield the rioters at the Jamia Milia Islamia University.

However, despite their best efforts, they couldn’t whitewash the sins of the Jamia ‘students’ as numerous videos surfaced where the ‘students’ could be clearly seen with stones in their hands. OpIndia too released some still from a CCTV footage where the very students who were there in the library could be seen holding stones.

Under such circumstances, people on social media were greatly repulsed by the propagandist’s efforts towards whitewashing the crimes and took to social media to vent their frustration. One person on social media urged people to register their complaint with the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), a cartel of Leftist fact-checking organizations that issues certificates to like-minded news websites.

AltNews is mentioned at the IFCN complaint form by the name of its parent company, the Pravda Media Foundation. A complaint was filed earlier as well when it was revealed that Pratik Sinha, its founder, was in violation of the IFCN code of principles through his membership of the Jan Sangharsh Manch. No action was taken against AltNews then and IFCN declared the political activists ‘neutral’ even after the propagandists lied in their response.

Many others also pointed towards the inherent bias of AltNews and the fact that they had too spread fake news earlier right after the Jamia riots.

Since then, AltNews has continued to engage in propaganda and make farfetched claims without any evidence to boost. In its most recent work of propaganda, AltNews claimed that the student seen in one of the videos wasn’t carry a stone in his hand but a wallet. It was then claimed that this video was used by people to “water down” the instance of ‘police brutality’. The insinuation here was obvious that in the absence of that specific video, there was nothing in the public domain to justify the actions of the Police. However, the same student was spotted in another video among a bunch of students carrying stones in their hands.

AltNews also engages in blatant political partisanship while preaching neutrality. It regularly ignores fake news spread by liberals and gives them a free pass. For instance, when liberals had engaged in rumour-mongering about the death of a student during the Police action in Jamia, AltNews, to our knowledge, had not done any fact-check of the blatant lies that were spread.

Don’t kill him, he is evidence: Inspector Sanjay Govilkar’s timely advice before terrorist Kasab was caught alive by Tukaram Omble

0

Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria’s recent book ‘Let Me Say It Now’ has thrown open a can of worms as the ex-Mumbai top cop made a host of stunning revelations in his book. Arguably, the most significant disclosure Maria made in his book was regarding one of the perpetrators of the Mumbai 26/11 terror attack -Ajmal Kasab, the only attacker who was captured alive.

Maria, in his book, asserted that Kasab had Hindu ID on him and the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI and the terror organisation Lashkar-e-Toiba wanted him to die as “Samir Chaudhary”. According to Maria, Lashkar and ISI planned to make all the ten terrorists who attacked Mumbai on 26/11 seem like disgruntled Hindus avenging the ‘atrocities’ perpetrated against Muslims. All ten terrorists were provided with saffron or red thread to be tied around their wrist so as to lend them a veneer of pious Hindus.

In addition, identity cards with Hindu names with Indian addresses were placed in their pockets as the ISI and Lashkar wanted all the ten terrorists to die in the attack so that India is bereft of any credible evidence to nail their origins to Pakistan. However, catching Kasab alive not only provided a big breakthrough to the Mumbai police but it also put paid to the Pakistani plans of absolving themselves of the grisly attack. Had he not been caught alive, the whole world would have been led to believe that this was a Hindu terror attack.

It was Tukaram Omble, an assistant sub-inspector police constable who took 40 bullets and sacrificed his precious life to catch Kasab alive who would later become the most notorious face of the Mumbai 26/11 attacks. While Omble’s supreme sacrifice and unparalleled valour in nabbing Kasab alive is incontrovertible, it is a lesser-known fact that Kasab was caught alive also because of one Sanjay Govilkar, Assistant Police Inspector of D B Marg police station, whose timely advice to his police colleagues brimming with absolute rage against Kasab stopped them from killing the maniac.

“Don’t kill him. He is evidence,” Govilkar involuntarily blurted out as several of his colleagues charged towards Kasab to kill him after he mortally injured Mr Omble. Govilkar himself took a bullet in his abdomen but it did not hamper his sagacity. Modest about himself, Govilkar credited team effort and Mr Omble’s transcendent gallantry that made Kasab face the trial and expose Pakistan’s nefarious designs to incite religious hatred in India. Were it not for the prompt suggestion from Govilkar, 26/11 mystery would have possibly remained as a mystery and the Pakistani ploy of Hindu terror would have gained credence.

After Aam Aadmi Party, the Left in West Bengal decides to cater to Hindu sentiments to revive its fortunes: Here are the details

Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have pioneered a tectonic shift in Indian politics. After the Aam Aadmi Party was forced to cater to Hindu sentiments in order to win elections, it appears that other parties are taking a leaf out of their book to reinvent themselves in Bengal politics. In a secret party note, the Left has told its senior party leaders that greater participation in Hindu festivals and Temple activities is required to combat the BJP in Bengal, Times Now has reported.

One line in the document says, “Temples and other related activities cannot be forfeited to the RSS.” The strategy, quite obviously, has been made keeping in mind the 2021 Bengal Assembly Elections which could very well turn into a bipolar contest between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP should the Left fail to reinvent itself. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, the Left failed to win a single seat in the state that it had dominated for decades. Its vote-share had collapsed to 6.28% while the BJP managed increased its tally to 18 seats from 2 and its vote share crossed 40%.

Since then, the politics in the state has revolved around the contest between Mamata Banerjee and the BJP and the Left is staring at political oblivion in West Bengal. Thus, under such circumstances, the Left realizes that it has to alter its politics radically if it is to remain a crucial player in the state. Only five years ago, prominent CPI(M) leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya had participated in a beef festival organized in Kolkata in protest against a beef ban in a state. It’s a remarkable shift since then.

In the aftermath of the Lok Sabha Elections where the BJP had registered a stellar performance, we at OpIndia had said that the results marked the dawn of religious politics in West Bengal and we had predicted that going forward, the results will be determined by the extent of religious polarization among the electorate. It appears that our prediction has been proven accurate as the Left is forced to cater to Hindu sentiments in order to regain legitimacy as a valid political alternative.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, the traditional voters of the Left had crossed over to the BJP and this crossover was largely motivated by concerns that revolve around their Hindu identity. Going forward, it will be interesting to see the extent to which the Left’s turn towards Hindu sentiments benefits it electorally. But one thing is certain, the Left has more potential to hurt the BJP with its Hindu politics than the Trinamool Congress.

While AltNews tries to shield Jamia rioters, here are images that show the library ‘students’ clearly carrying stones

The videos that have surfaced on social media from Jamia Milia Islamia University on the fateful night of the 15th December, when Delhi Police was forced to enter the campus in order to flush out miscreants engaging in violence against the Citizenship Amendment Act, have created quite a furore. After the first video was released by the Jamia Coordination Committee, an unofficial body of students and alumni, numerous other videos have emerged that show students of the university carrying stones in their hands.

In the aftermath of it all, far-left propagandist website and self-proclaimed fact-checker AltNews claimed that the student seen in one of the videos wasn’t carry a stone in his hand but a wallet.

It was then claimed that this video was used by people to “water down” the instance of ‘police brutality’. The insinuation here was obvious that in the absence of that specific video, there was nothing in the public domain to justify the actions of the Police.

AltNews founder Pratika Sinha’s tweet

However, as much as AltNews founder Pratik Sinha might want us to believe that the Delhi Police had no justification at all to enter the campus to flush out the miscreants, it’s obviously not true. The AltNews report does not offer any rebuttal to the fact that the ‘students’ could be seen sitting with closed books on the desks when the police personnel are seen entering the library. In one such video, one student suddenly put up a handkerchief mask on his face just before the police entered the library. Another student was also wearing a handkerchief across his face while standing against a wall. AltNews does not provide a rebuttal to any of this before reaching farfetched conclusions.

As it so happens, there is another video of the night available where the students of Jamia can be seen clearly holding stones in both hands. The person who was supposedly carrying his wallet can also be spotted with the crowd and it appears certain that he was one with the stone-pelting students. And later, this same student who was mingling with the stone-in-hand students was spotted at the library with a ‘wallet’.

Here is the image of the same ‘student’ with the alleged ‘wallet’ that AltNews found in the library.

Same student who was carrying an alleged wallet in the library

Under such circumstances, to still claim that Delhi Police had no justification to enter the campus is simply living in denial of reality. All the videos that have surfaced since the initial video was released simply prove that Delhi Police had to enter the campus in order to flush out the miscreants.

Here are some screenshots from the video that clearly show Jamia students with stones in their hands.

The University Administration also came out to disassociate itself from the release of the first video. “It has come to our notice that some video regards to police brutalities in Dr Zakir Hussain library are in circulation. This is to clarify that the video has not been released by the university,” Jamia Millia Islamia University administration said in a statement.

The controversial Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi had emerged as one of the epi-centres of the anti-CAA agitations being perpetrated in the name of ‘peaceful protests’. The students and Muslim mob associated with the Jamia Millia Islamia University had unleashed violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
