Modi Government secures release of four Indian nationals abducted by Arakan Army in Myanmar, one died during detention

The Indian government has secured the release of five Indian nationals including an individual who died in captivity, who were abducted by the Arakan Army in Myanmar. The Indian nationals were taken into captivity by a Rakhine insurgent group called the Arakan Army in Myanmar while they were travelling there to work on a road project in the northern part of Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

Reportedly, the Indian nationals who are released are identified as Vijay Kumar Singh (48), Nangshanbok Suiam (47), Rakesh Sharma (64) and Ajay Kothiyal (50).

On November 3, five Indian nationals, along with a Myanmar MP, two local transporters and one speedboat operators were abducted by insurgent group Arakan Army on way from Paletwa to Kyauktaw in Rakhine province of Myanmar.

Complaint filed with child rights body against actor Swara Bhasker for calling a 4-year-old child actor from South India ‘chu**ya’

Legal Rights Protection Forum, an NGO, has filed a legal complaint against National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) for racist and abusive comments against a four-year-old child actor from South and referring to him as ‘chu**ya’.

Legal complaint filed to NCPCR against Swara Bhasker for referring to 4-year-old child actor as ‘chu**a’

In the letter addressed to the Chairperson of NCPCR, Legal Rights Protection Forum talks about the abusive language used against children by Swara in the YouTube show ‘Son of Abish’ hosted by ‘comedian’ Abish Mathew. The NGO points out the crass language used by Swara for a child actor from a particular region (South India). The NGO states that Bhasker made racist and discriminatory statements along with abusive comments against the children from Southern part of India.

In the clip that has gone viral on social media, Swara is describing one of her initial ad shoots about a soap where against her expectations of appearing in a dreamy sequence she was confronted with a four-year-old child actor. When the child called her ‘aunty’, Bhasker, in her head, called the child ‘chu**ya’ even as the audience erupted in laughter. “Children are basically evil, right?” she says while the host of the show Abish, agrees.

The complaint further states that the Constitution of India under Article 15 prohibits discrimination on the grounds of race, caste, sex, descent, place of birth or residence. The complaint even states the United Nations Convention of Child Rights which speaks about rights of a child against any discrimination.

“One could immediately sense the underlying implicit and unconscious bias in the supposedly ‘funny’ video that too from a person who is widely regarded as popular by a section of Indian media,” the complaint states adding that such language sets a wrong precedent across India portraying children from South India in negative picture.

The Legal Rights Protection Forum has further asked that the platforms such as Hotstar, Twitter and YouTube remove the content and take strict action against Swara Bhasker.

NYTimes columnist Aatish Taseer displays Hinduphobia in full glory, speaks the language of the very Islamists who killed his father

When Pulwama terrorist blew up the SUV that killed 40 CRPF personnel in February this year, he referred to Indians as ‘gaae ka peshab peene wale’ (cow urine drinkers). ‘Cow urine drinker’ jibe has been long used by people to mock Hindus even though it echoes the language used by terrorists. Latest to join in is NY Times columnist Aatish Taseer.

Read: Aatish Taseer toes the Radical Islamic line, says ‘ordinary muslims’ should organize and they do not need ‘peace’

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Taseer mocked Central Government’s plans to redesigning the Central Secretariat by saying that once Indian buildings are taken care of the government can convert the Westminster into an institute for the study of ‘cow urine’ or the US Capitol into museum of aviation during vedic period.

He was confronted by BJP leader Nandita Thakur who suggested that research may be done to prove that cow urine may help in curing cancer.

He was then suggested that instead of mocking Hindus with cow urine jibe, he should monetize it by inventing cow urine cocktail.

To that, Taseer dragged in columnist Shefali Vaidya and said how he would like to see Vaidya ‘splashing about in a puddle of cow urine’ like ‘cleopatra of gaumutra’ or ‘whatever the f*ck it is’.

Last month, Taseer, whose own Pakistani politician father Salman Taseer, was killed by his own bodyguard, a radical Islamist because he opposed blasphemy law, had suggested that ‘ordinary Muslims’ should abandon peace and they ‘need to organise’. He said that ‘ordinary Muslims’ shouldn’t be caught off-guard.

More specifically, the senior Taseer opposed the death penalty for Asia Bibi who was sentenced to death for an alleged act of blasphemy. Taseer was putting for this views to get ordinary Muslims to ‘organise’ following the death of Hindu Samaj Party leader Kamlesh Tiwari who was murdered by Islamists for his alleged remarks on Prophet Muhammed.

Aatish Taseer had suggested that ‘ordinary Muslims’ should organize not in pursuit of peace but in response to people blaspheming about the prophet of Islam on social media. Despite his father being murdered by Jihadis, Taseer appears to think hashtags on Twitter are the real problem here.

And now, Taseer is busy spouting the same venom Jihadis and Hinduphobes use to target Hindus, some of who are paying for it with their lives, like Kamlesh Tiwari.

Unfortunately, Taseer isn’t the only one who has been going on spouting venom against Hindus and displaying their Hinduphobia in all glory.

Film actor-turned-Twitter troll-turned politician Prakash Raj shared a video of some boys who claimed they were using cow dung as soap.

Former MP and journalist Shahid Siddiqui chimed in and said how all problems will be solved by bathing with ‘gobar’, drinking cow urine and by performing yagna.

Following the death of ISIS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi who detonated his suicide vest following a US raid, Siddiqui had said how it was Muslims who killed Baghdadi’s ideology despite the fact that radical Islam continues to thrive. In fact, following Kamlesh Tiwari’s assassination, Siddiqui along with others was involved in an attempt to deflect attention from the perils of radical Islamic terrorism and accusing the ‘Hindutva brigade’ of hatred.

Inputs from RSS and farmers association stopped Modi govt from being a part of RCEP, world’s largest free trade agreement

On Monday, the Indian government announced that it will not be part of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership or RCEP, which will be the world’s largest free trade pact of 16 nations.

In his address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said the present form of the RCEP Agreement “does not fully reflect the basic spirit and the agreed guiding principles” or India’s concerns.

PM Modi had cited the interests of farmers, traders, professionals, industries and workers, who have a stake in such decisions. He said, “When I measure the RCEP Agreement with respect to the interests of all Indians, I do not get a positive answer. Therefore, neither the Talisman of Gandhiji nor my own conscience permits me to join the RCEP”.

However, the biggest opposition to the RCEP deal with the ASEAN and its five other free-trading partners did not arrive from any political party. The serious opposition from BJP’s ideological mentor – Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), along with various other bodies, who had vehemently expressed reservations about the deal, made Modi government to alter its position with regards to the proposed free trade agreement.

Read: Days after Piyush Goyal reassured that interests of India will be protected, Modi reinforces that by not joining RCEP as key concerns were not addressed

Though industries and traders had mixed opinion on whether India should join the largest free-trade initiative, the farmer associations and the Sangh’s affiliates, especially Swadeshi Jagran Manch were categorically opposed to the signing of any such deals which could harm India’s interest. In fact, the inputs given by the Sangh and various other bodies acted as enablers for Modi government to pull out from the RCEP, which would have given free-access of Indian markets to countries like China.

The RSS and its affiliates had cautioned against yielding too much in the trade deal especially with the domestic industry itself actually becoming a handicap for Indian negotiators. The other key drawback has been to use the RCEP as an opportunity to seek market access with China, with which India has a huge trade deficit and which has always fobbed off India’s requests in the past.

Sangh Parivar’s opposition to RCEP:

Sangh Parivar affiliates have been constantly opposing India’s joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), a proposed free trade zone of 10 south-east Asian nations and six big trading partners in the area.

Since from the beginning, Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) an affiliate of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, requested the government to stay away from RCEP, and always alerted the ills coming in the way. In October, the SJM had announced a 10-day nationwide protest against the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

The announcement by the SJM came just three days after Mohan Bhagwat, the Sarsanghchalak of RSS, the ideological parent of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), spoke about promoting swadeshi in his annual Dusshera speech and also cautioned the government against rushing into the deal. In his speech, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had emphasised on upholding Swadeshi consciousness and steps to improve the economy by creating employment.

According to the SJM, the RCEP would have undone various good works done by the NDA government under Modi in the last six months. The agreement would have killed the ‘Make In India’, ‘Digital India’, ‘Skill India’ and various other avenues of job creation, the Sangh’s economic wing said.

“The free trade agreements (FTAs) India has signed in the last decade play a major role by allowing cheap imports and hollowing out of Indian manufacturing. In 2018-19, India had a trade deficit with 11 of the 15 RCEP negotiating countries. In the previous year, India had a USD 104 billion trade deficit with RCEP countries and more than half of this was with China,” said Ashwini Mahajan, co-convener of SJM.

Following the protest from the RSS affiliates, BJP organisation general secretary BL Santosh had chaired a meeting of various stakeholders on the issue of India becoming a member of RCEP.

Sangh affiliates like Swadeshi Jagran Manch and bodies engaged in dairy, agriculture and manufacturing sectors like steel and telecom fear that countries like China, Australia and New Zealand will ruin these businesses and create unemployment. The matter was flagged during the meeting convened by Santosh and BJP spokesperson Gopal Agarwal on Monday evening.

Those opposed to RCEP maintain that China would dump its goods in India and the steep fall in prices will impact the indigenous industry, leading to increasing unemployment and losses.

On Monday, following the withdrawal from the RCEP, the SJM issued a statement thanking the Narendra Modi government. “Staying away from RCEP is a decision in favour of the country’s small businesses, farmers, dairy, data security and manufacturing sector. SJM thanks PM Modi for showing great diplomatic farsightedness in terming the present text of the negotiations not in favour of people of India,” the statement said.

Farmers and Allied sectors:

Similarly, farmers associations like All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), a coalition of over 250 farmer organisations in the country, had planned a nationwide protest and warned the government against going ahead with the inclusion of agriculture in the RCEP free trade agreement.

As the Modi government decided not to join the RCEP, the industry, traders and farmers’ associations appreciated the Modi government’s decision.

Commenting on the move, All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) said that it was happy that “good sense” has prevailed on the government and its decision to barter away the life and livelihood of crores of farmers, workers, and small businesses, has been averted.

“AIKSCC sincerely hopes that this Government will not try any back-door method of sabotaging the interest of Indian farmers and farm-workers through trade deals,” it said in a statement.

The country’s leading milk supplier Amul described the move as “landmark”. The dairy industry had expressed apprehension that the 16-nation trade pact would severely impact dairy farmers because of cheaper imports from Australia and New Zealand.

Dairy major Amul MD RS Sodhi described the move as “daring” and “landmark” which will protect the interest of 10 crore farmers engaged in the production of milk and related products.

The RCEP is Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership is a proposed free trade agreement between the ten member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and its six FTA partners – China, India, Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

The letter is reproduced below:

Hi Chiku!

First of all, a very happy birthday! I am sure you have a lot of questions for me about your future. I am sorry but I am not going to answer too many of them. Because not knowing what’ in store makes every surprise sweet, every challenge thrilling and every disappointment an opportunity to learn. You don’t realise it today but it is more about the journey than the destination. And the journey is SUPER.

What I will tell you is that life has big things in store for you Virat. But you need to be ready for each and every opportunity that comes your way. Grab it when it comes. And never take what you have for granted. You will fail. Everyone does. Just promise yourself that you will never forget to rise. And if at first you don’t, try again.

You will be loved by many and will be disliked too. By some who won’t even know you. Don’t care about them. Keep believing in yourself!

I know you’re thinking about those shoes dad did not gift you today. They mean nothing when compared to the hug he gave you this morning or the joke he cracked about your height. Cherish this. I know he can seem strict at times. But that’s because he wants the best for you. You feel that our parents don’t understand us sometimes but remember this – only our family loves us unconditionally. Love them back, respect them and spend all the time you can, with them.

Tell dad you love him. A lot. Tell him today. Tell him tomorrow. Tell him more often.

Finally, just follow your heart, chase your dreams, be kind and show the word how dreaming big makes all the difference. Be you.

And… savour those parathas buddy! They’ll become quite a luxury in years to come.

Make every day super!

Telangana: Woman revenue officer burnt alive by angry land owner for not correcting land records

0

A shocking incident has come to the fore wherein a woman Tahsildar of Telanagana’s revenue department was burnt alive in her office allegedly by a man angry over the official not fixing errors in his land records.

In the incident which occurred in Abdullapurmet Tahsil Office in Ranga Reddy district on the outskirts of Hyderabad on November 4, Tahsildar or Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO) Vijaya Reddy was in her chambers when a man walked in, poured petrol and set her ablaze. While the official died on the spot, the two employees who tried to save the MRO were injured. The condition of one of them is stated to be critical.

Police confirmed that the incident took place during the office lunch hours when there were not many visitors in the office.

The eye-witnesses to the incident claimed that the accused entered the woman officers office with passbooks related to his property this afternoon. Half an hour later, much to the horror of all passers-by, the Tahsildar rushed out of her office in flames. Although Vijaya Reddy’s office staff wrapped her in a blanket in an attempt to douse the flames, she died soon afterwards. Sources said that the accused, identified as Suresh Mudiraju, had smuggled a bottle of fuel into Vijaya Reddy’s office along with his land documents.

The assailant who also suffered burns in the incident later got himself admitted to a private hospital at Hayathnagar with reportedly 50-60 per cent burns and is said to be in a critical condition, confirmed Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat adding: “Suresh Mudiraju did not act on impulse. He came to the victim’s office with a plan.”

According to sources, Suresh Mudiraju was furious about the authorities not fixing errors in his documents despite several visits to the revenue office and even getting an order from the court in this connection.

The incident has, however, sent shock waves among government officials, who began protesting, demanding security for themselves.

SC slams Congress govt in Chhattisgarh for tapping the phones of a senior IPS officer and his family members

0

The Supreme court on Monday slammed the Chhattisgarh Congress government for its involvement in tapping the phones of a senior IPS officer, Mukesh Gupta and his family members.

Taking serious note of the issue the bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Indira Banerjee said: “What is the need to do like this? No privacy is left for anybody. What is happening in this country.”

Hearing the case of alleged phone tapping of Indian Police Service officer, the apex court reprimanded the Chhattisgarh government asking them as to whether the right to privacy of a person can be violated like this. “Who ordered this phone tapping?” the bench asked the state authorities, seeking a detailed affidavit clarifying who ordered the surveillance and the reasons behind it.

In October, the top court had asked the state police to refrain from arresting or “unduly harassing” the senior police official, Mukesh Gupta.

The apex court also objected to a separate first information report (FIR) that had been filed against a lawyer representing Gupta. It stayed the inquiry against Mahesh Jethmalani and said that no coercive measures should be taken against him until further orders.

The Congress government led by Bhupesh Baghel in Chhattisgarh had directed Gupta’s lawyer, Jethmalani not to politicise the matter by including the chief minister’s name in the parties involved. It ordered that Baghel’s name be removed from the memo of respondents in the plea.

On February 9, two IPS officers, including one Rajnesh Singh, who was the superintendent of police in Narayanpur at that time and Mukesh Gupta who was then special deputy general of police were suspended after the Economic Offences Wing registered a report against them for alleged criminal conspiracy.

They were also accused of illegally tapping phones during the Civil Supplies Corporation scam investigations in 2015.

Gupta and Singh were charged with providing false evidence and tampering with the proof, and forgery, among other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Gupta had, however, refuted all the allegations, and claimed the inquiry was done according to the law.

The court had through an interim order on September 2, 2019, stayed three FIRs against Gupta filed by the state. It had also sent a notice to the state government and the chief minister.
