I am a Hindu: Breaking of temples brings back the worst of my civilizational memories

In his book Pakistan or the Partition of India, Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar recalls the work of scholars who concluded that:

Mahommad Ghori, one of the enthusiastic successors of Muhammad of Ghazni, in his conquest of Ajmir destroyed pillars and foundations of the idol-temples, and built in their stead mosques and colleges, and the precepts of Islam and the customs of the law were divulged and established. At Delhi, the city and its vicinity were freed from idols and idol worship, and in the sanctuaries of the images of the Gods mosques were raised by the worshippers of the one God.

As an Indian Hindu, there is something about a broken temple in Delhi that brings out the worst of my civilizational memories.

100 year old Chandni Chowk temple vandalised

You can see why.

A Hindu kid growing up in India soon becomes acutely aware of the centuries of humiliation heaped upon our ancestors. We hear stories from elders about the sacking and plunder of temples. Our history books dance around the topic, avoiding direct mention as far as possible, but they can’t whitewash everything. We do read about the Jaziya tax. We read about what happened to Somnath Temple. Not once, not twice, but several times over. We hear about the successive invasions of Delhi, the massacres, the plunder, the destruction of temples and the building of mosques over them.

If you have a little interest in history and digging up old books, you will read about the numbers of people killed in those massacres, the numbers of temples destroyed, the amount of the loot in gold, etc, etc. These  have been recorded with pride (!) by the Islamic chroniclers who recorded the “glory” of the Sultans and Badshahs they served.

If you get to go around and see some of the proud symbols of India’s “Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb,” you will be filled with a deep sense of humiliation. Not just at what happened, but at the way Hindu pain was buried and forgotten.

There was a picture of the Qutb Minar on the cover of one of my school history textbooks. Later I found out that the Qutb Minar and the adjoining Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque is built over the ruins of Hindu and Jain temples. I found out that Qutb Minar is not a symbol of Indian glory, but a victory tower built to celebrate the subjugation of our people. How do you think a Hindu kid feels?

Are you proud that ancient India was once home to the world’s greatest university? The ruins of Nalanda are in Bakhtiarpur in Bihar, with the town still named after the man who destroyed Nalanda University.

Of course, all of this is history. The people who did these things are no longer alive. We cannot change history; we must take it as it is; good, bad or ugly. But when a deep civilizational wound is scratched, the heart bleeds.

The incident in Chandni Chowk, in the heart of Delhi, in today’s India, causes a deep pain. It reminds us of the humiliation that our ancestors suffered for being Hindus in India.

Two things need to happen immediately.

First, the Government of India needs to act and swiftly so to put every one of those rioters behind bars. On this ,there can be no compromise. It is the least that we citizens expect from PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, who is directly in charge of law and order in the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Secondly, we Hindus need to speak up in one voice. Our ancestors had no voice and no rights. But we do. We live in a democracy. We can demand our dignity. We want justice.

Sonia Gandhi indulges in fearmongering, opposes corporatisation of Railway production units by terming it as ‘privatisation’ in parliament

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi indulged in baseless fearmongering today in Lok Sabha when she accused that Modi government is privatising production units Indian Railway. Referring to the government’s decision to corporatize 6 factories of Indian Railway, Sonia Gandhi alleged that it is being for the benefit of a few rich industrialists. She was addressing the parliament for the first time in the newly elected 17th Lok Sabha during the zero hour on 2nd July 2019.

Reading her speech in her trademark broken Hindi, the former Congress president mentioned that Modern Coach Factory in Rae Bareli, which is her parliamentary constituency, is also included in the factories shortlisted for corporatisation. She said, “those who don’t know the real meaning of corporatisation, I would like to explain them that Corporatisation is actually the beginning of Privatisation.” She said that corporatisation is the first process in handing over the priceless national treasure to a few rich capitalists for a pittance.

Sonia Gandhi alleged that this proposed move of Modi government will future of the employees working in the factory and their families will be in grave danger if the factory is corporatized. She also questioned the last Modi government’s decision to do away with presenting separate railway budget.

Although it is true that the railway ministry has proposed corporatisation of some railway units, it is absolutely misleading to say that it is done with the objective of privatisation.

In the 100-day plan prepared by the ministry after the formation of the new government, a proposal to set up a new government-owned public sector unit named Indian Railway Rolling Stock Company Ltd (IRRSCL) has been included. The ministry aims to hive off its locomotive and rolling stock production units and their associated workshops into this new entity.

The aim of this is to bring in increased efficiency in production in the units. The IRRSCL is proposed to drive the technology partnership and modernisation initiatives of the seven production units under the Ministry of Railways. Each production unit under a CEO will operate as an individual profit centre.

The ministry is planning to only corporatize its production units in a separate entity, and it does not mean privatisation. Therefore, Sonia Gandhi was presenting distorted facts in Parliament by saying that the government is planning to privatise the production units. Even after corporatisation, the production facilities will remain a government entity named IRRSCL, and they will not be handed over to some industrialist like she is alleging.

PSUs remain under government ownership but function in a more efficient manner as they have great autonomy. The Indian government have several successful PSUs, many of them listed as Maharatna, Navaratna and Miniratnas, and just the fact that they are corporations does not mean that they are going to be privatised.

Sonia Gandhi also alleged that the employees of the MDF have not been taken into confidence in the matter. But that is also untrue, as the ministry has only unveiled the plan, which says that the department will consult with unions and will ensure that no harm happens to them. According to reports, Railways will start consolations with unions immediately, and they will start with Modern Coach Factory in Rae Bareli.

Coming to Rae Bareli’s Modern Coach Factory that Sonia Gandhi was talking about specifically, it may be noted that although it was established to manufacture coaches, during UPA government no such manufacturing happened there. Instead of producing 1000 coaches per year as promised by the UPA government, the factory only refurbished 375 coaches between 2011 and 2014. Only after BJP came to power in 2014, the MCF actually started producing coaches. Starting with 140 coaches made in 2014-15, it is doubling production every year, and produced a record 1425 coaches in 2018-19, exceeding the target of 1422 units.

Therefore, while Sonia Gandhi worries about the future of the factory, the fact is that the factory flourished at unprecedented scale under the Modi government, which was ignored and forgotten during Congress rule.

The Rahuri police in Ahmednagar district have arrested Muzaffar Latif Patel and Gulshan Sheikh, who accompanied him for the alleged rape of the lady for not accepting Islam. According to the complaint filed by the victim, Muzaffar Patel had stopped them on a road and threatened to kill her and her father. Following the incident, she was forcibly taken to the co-accused Gulshan Sheikh’s house where she was kept hostage.

Besides this, after taking her hostage, the assailants pressurised the victim into adopting Islam. The woman had alleged in her complaint that based on these threats she was being raped for the last two years. When she refused to cave in to the pressure mounted by her assailants, Gulshan Shaikh threatened her of forcibly marrying her off to Latif for converting her to Islam. In addition to this, she was intimidated by her captors of sprinkling gasoline on her and setting her on fire and killing her father.

Somehow, the woman succeeded in escaping from their captivity and went directly to the police station to file her complaint. The Rahuri police have filed a case against both the accused and they have been arrested.

The Superintendent of Police of Srirampur, Rahul Madane, has sought details about the case from the victim. At present, the police sub-inspector Satish Shirsath, who is investigating the matter, asserted that both the alleged culprits have been arrested and an investigation is underway. The veracity of the accusations imposed by the woman is being probed.

World Cup Preview – India v Bangladesh: A must win game for Bangladesh

Bangladesh is playing after seven days, in a hope to win against the mighty Indians and remains in the race for the semis. India, on the other hand, would be hoping to win their last two games and hope South Africa to beat Australia in their final group game to take the number one position in the points table.

India, after losing their game against the host nation, would be worried as the injury issues in this world cup playing a big part. First, they lost Dhawan, then Bhuvi and now Vijay Shankar. This is making think tank to replan the strategies. They are also having an issue with their middle order, which is not able to contribute as per their experience. India’s best bet is to bat first and let the bowlers (India’s brightest part of this world cup) defend any given target.

Bangladesh needs to win this so that their game against Pakistan remain open for the final slot of the semi-final. They should know that the Indian team is struggling with injury and India’s middle order not clicking at all. So if they bat first and score anything above 300, then they have a great chance to beat India. However, it won’t be easy for them because of India’s excellent bowling line up.

Players to watch out

Rohit Sharma, having three centuries on in this tournament, a lot will depend on how he performs at the top. His partner KL Rahul looks out of sorts, and apart from Kohli, no one is among runs, he needs to bat for minimum 40 overs. Last time he played against Bangladesh in World Cup, he smashed a hundred, can he score again?

Tamim Iqbal, a big score is due from his bat in this World Cup. He played a vital role in Bangladesh’s win over India in 2007. This is a perfect opportunity for him to go out and score some runs for his team.

PNB Scam: Singapore High Court orders attachment of properties of fugitive Nirav Modi worth Rs 44 crore

The global crackdown against fugitive Nirav Modi continues as Singapore High Court has now ordered the attachment of Nirav Modi’s properties and bank accounts worth $6.122 million (approximately Rs 44.41 crores) on the request of Enforcement Directorate.

According to the reports, the Singapore High Court ordered the freezing of balance of $6.122 million (Rs 44.41 crores) crore in the bank account maintained in Singapore by Pavilion Point Corporation, British Virgin Island, a company beneficially owned by Mayank Mehta and Purvi Modi brother-in-law and sister of Nirav Modi.

Last week, in a big boost to Narendra Modi government in their crackdown against Nirav Modi, Switzerland had frozen four bank accounts worth $6 million belonging to fugitive Nirav Modi following the request of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the PMLA act.

The ED had informed regarding the process of attaching other foreign assets of the fugitive diamantaire who is believed to have at least 80-85 shell companies and around 200 bank accounts, which could be in Switzerland as well as in British Virgin island and also in Cayman Island.

Based on a similar request by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Belgian authorities had also frozen two bank accounts of Nirav Modi companies last year.

Nirav Modi, his wife Ami Modi, brother Nishal Modi, and uncle Mehul Choksi are accused of defrauding Punjab National Bank to the tune of Rs 14,356 crore by obtaining Letter of Undertaking without furnishing any guarantee.

TV9 Bharatvarsh deletes its video after Twitter users expose the fake video claiming PM Modi met former PM Manmohan Singh to discuss Indian economy

Media channel TV9 Bharatvarsh and its journalists have resorted to spreading fake news claiming that PM Modi had gone to meet former PM Manmohan Singh at his residence to discuss Indian economy.

TV9 Bharatvarsh had run a report by Congress-friendly journalist Supriya Bhardwaj claiming that PM Modi had gone to meet former PM Manmohan Singh at his residence. The reports claimed exclusive details over the meeting.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRXvR5NSXIY]

The news report was shared on the media portal’s YouTube channel yesterday. Journalist Supriya Bhardwaj claimed that the PM and the former PM are to discuss economic issues in the country. The video has now been removed from YouTube.

However, Twitter user Ankur Singh has pointed out that TV9Bharatvarsh had made blatant fake claims using a 2014 video clip.

PM Modi has met former PM Manmohan Singh on several occasions in the past. The former PM had visited PM Modi at 7 RCR in May 2015 too. However, the particular video clip where PM Modi met Manmohan Singh at the latter’s residence and was greeted by Manmohan Singh and his wife is from May 2014, a day after PM Modi took oath as the PM of India for the first time. The PM had gone to meet his predecessor and the video was shared by PM Modi’s YouTube channel.

Not only TV9 Bharatvarsh, Jeetendra Baghel, an advocate and secretary at Congress had also tweeted the same 2014 video clip claiming that PM Modi has met Manmohan Singh at the latter’s residence to seek his advise over ‘how to increase India’s GDP’.

Baghel’s lies were slammed by Twitter user @pokershash.

In fact, no formal meeting between the present and former PM has taken place in recent days. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had met the former PM Singh last week. Though no official details of the meeting were available, it was cited as a ‘courtesy visit’.

It is not clear why TV9 Bharatvarsh had carried a report over a non-existent meeting using a 5-year-old video clip. However, the way Congress official Baghel has used the same clip to peddle a narrative that the PM has met Singh to ‘seek his advice’, it might have been another attempt to stick some relevance to a party that is fast becoming irrelevant in Indian politics after repeated poll debacles.

It is not the first time that TV9 Bharatvarsh has run blatant fake news. Earlier, they were caught publishing fake news over ‘missing EVMs’ during the Lok Sabha elections.

Chandni Chowk MP Dr Harshvardhan directs police to take strict action against the miscreants who desecrated the Durga temple

Union Minister and Chandni Chowk MP Dr Harshvardhan visited the the site where Durga temple was desecrated this morning to take stock of the situation. Condemning the incident, he appealed for peace. The Union Minister has directed the Delhi police to take stringent actions against the miscreants who desecrated the Durga temple.

In his tweet, this morning the Union Minister said that he was disquietened seeing the idols vandalised during his visit to the temple and has assured that the miscreants would not be spared.

He said he has met the DCP and other police officers and directed them to take vigorous actions against the anti-socials who executed this sinful act. Dr Harsh Vardhan said that he could not visit the site before, as some parliamentary commitments had kept him busy, but he was continuously in touch with the police officials who kept him updated. The police have assured that perpetrators would be caught in the next few hours.

The Delhi police have, for all this while, chosen to refer to this incident of communal attack as “altercation and scuffle over parking issue”, but now, this acknowledgement by the Union Minister might compel the Delhi police to portray the incident in the right perspective.

According to locals who posted videos of the temple on social media, at around 12 am, the Durga Mandir was attacked by 300-400 people belonging to the Muslim community. Along with the temple, the houses belonging to Hindus in the neighbourhood were also targeted by the mob, the locals alleged. As of now, police has detained a few suspects, one of whom is a juvenile.

However, according to police sources, this was triggered by a skirmish caused by an argument over parking. When the argument over parking in the area became intense, some people started pelting stones. Later in the night a mob entered the temple and vandalised it. The police have confirmed that Muslim youths in the area attacked the temple.

Moreover, in the latest, a witness has claimed that the AAP MLA Imran Hussain, was also amongst those supporting the Muslim mob which targeted the temple. The witness alleged that the AAP MLA extended his support to the miscreants but no one helped them in their efforts to save the temple.

However, what is surprising is that, though the tension prevailing over the temple vandalisation moves into its third day, the Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal is yet to come out and make any statement. He has until now, maintained a stoic silence over the Chandni Chowk temple desecrating incident.

Rahul Gandhi to choose a Dalit to follow his orders? Reports suggest Shinde might become Congress President

Sushil Kumar Shinde, a popular Dalit leader from Maharashtra may soon be the face of Congress, reports suggest. Rahul Gandhi reiterated his stance once again on Monday that he would not take back his resignation amidst indications that Shinde may replace the Gandhi scion.

It is widely believed that after the unexpected victory of 2004, Sonia Gandhi chose Dr Manmohan Singh to run the UPA government since she was facing resistance. It was speculated that to make sure allies like NCP, which had broken away from Congress on Sonia Gandhi’s foreign citizenship find it easier to support the Congress, Dr Singh was picked up as the face of the government. It seems like Rahul Gandhi could also be using similar tactics after the not-so-unexpected 2019 poll defeat.

The Gandhi family has reportedly agreed on Shinde’s name after another veteran AK Antony declined the offer to lead the party citing health conditions. Last time Congress had a non-Gandhi President was between 1996-1998 when Sitaram Kesri he grand old party before he was unceremoniously removed to make way for Sonia Gandhi.

In December 1997 Sonia Gandhi joined Congress formally and addressed her first election rally in Tamil Nadu. Soon, Sitaram Kesri, who was the Congress party president, was being forced to step down to make way for Sonia Gandhi to become the party president.

On March 14, 1998, Congress Working Committee decided to ask Kesri to step down so Sonia could take over. He was reportedly locked up in the bathroom at Congress headquarters in Akbar Road so he could not stop Sonia from entering the office with her supporters to take over as party president.

Interestingly, INC’s official website also didn’t mention him as one of the past presidents. After it was pointed out by OpIndia, Congress updated its website.

The other names which are doing the rounds as plausible options to replace Rahul were Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ashok Gehlot, Mallikarjun Kharge, Janardhan Dwivedi and Mukul Wasnik. However, Shinde emerged as the probable winner for the post as he is considered to be close to the Gandhi family since 1971 and a well-known Dalit face in poll-bound Maharashtra.

Muslim groups carry out violent protests over alleged bike thief Tabrez’s death, stone pelting, clashes with police reported from Agra and Meerut

After an alleged bike thief Tabrez Ansari was caught and beaten up by a mob in Dhatkidih, Jharkhand and died some days later in police custody, protests and politicisation over his death have been continuing in several areas.

As per reports, after protests in one locality of Meerut on Sunday where the police had to resort to lathi charge to control the situation, violent protests broke out in Mawana area yesterday.

As per reports, on Sunday, hundreds of protesters had gathered on Sunday evening near Faiz-e-Azam college protesting against the alleged mob lynching of Tabrez Ansari in Jharkhand. The police had to lathi charge on the gathered people to control the situation as the mob had started stone pelting. the police had stated that no permissions were sought for the gathering and protests.

On Monday, in Meerut’s Mawana area, hundreds of people had gathered near the Mosque at Mill road to hear Maulana Nafees Ahmed, who had organised a meeting for the members of Muslim community over the death of Tabrez Ansari. As a crowd of several hundred gathered near the Mosque to hear the Maulana’s speech, soon they started altercations with the police. The police had to lathi charge again to disperse the crowd.

As per reports, in Mawana, the protestors were demanding that the alleged bike thief Tabrez be declared a martyr and his family is compensated adequately. The police have suspended internet services in the area to curb rumour mongering. So far, the police have registered FIRs against 850(50 named and 800 unnamed) people over Monday’s violent protests.

Violent protests were being mobilised in Agra too. As per reports, on Monday, several Muslim groups took out protests in Agra demanding justice for Tabrez Ansari. Like in Meerut, the protests had begun after a gathering at the Royal Jama Masjid. The protests were reportedly organised by Indian Muslim Action Committee and Bharatiya Vikas Parishad.

Despite the implementation of section 144 of the CrPC and police presence, one section of Muslim protestors soon turned violent and proceeded towards the city’s Sadar Bhatti and Kashmiri Gate areas where they tried to shut down the local market. The police have stated that no permissions were sought for the gatherings and protests.

Hindu shop owners in the market reportedly opposed the call to shut down shops. Following which, the Muslim mob started stone pelting in the area. As the situation deteriorated, the police had to intervene and disperse the crowd. Several platoons of police forces have been deployed to avoid any violence and law and order situation.

Several areas in Agra, reportedly, Sadar Bhatti, Nal Ki Mandi, Subhash Bazar, Mantola, Fawwara, and Kinari Bazar remained closed due to stone pelting incidents. SSP Joginder Kumar has assured that the rioters will be identified and strict action will be taken against them.

Tabrez Ansari was caught by the locals in the Dhatkidih village in Jharkhand on suspicion of bike theft on 18 June. He was beaten up by them before being arrested by the police. He had died on June 22. An investigation team set up by the government had concluded that Tabrez might have died due to stress-induced cardiac arrest. Medical reports had established that no internal injury was found on Tabrez’s body, hence the police had dismissed the allegations that ‘mob-lynching’ was a cause of Tabrez’s death.

Delhi temple attack: Witness says AAP MLA Imran Hussain joined the mob and did not stop attacks on temple

After the horrific incident of desecrating a temple in Hauz Kazi, Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi allegedly by a Muslim mob, the situation seems to have returned to normal. As per Times of India journalist Raj Shekhar Jha, three miscreants have been detained by the Police. One of them is reportedly a juvenile.

A day after the incident, startling reports have been emerging pertaining to the details of the temple attack. On July 1, a mob of 300-400 men barged into Durga Mata Mandir in Lal Kuan in Chandni Chowk area and had desecrated idols present inside the shrine. According to locals who had posted videos of the temple on social media, at around 12 am, the Muslim mob entered the temple and began to thrash Hindus residing the neighbourhood after they tried stopping Muslims from destroying temple idols.

According to Times of India journalist Raj Shekhar Jha, the tensions in the area had increased after local Muslims supported and gathered in large numbers, who shouted slogans in favour of a fellow Muslims, who allegedly attacked and broke idols inside the temple.

Shockingly, a large number of Whatsapp forwards and groups were created to circulate news of a Muslim’s death to gather people to the spot in large numbers indicating that there was a plan to fuel large scale violence in the area against Hindus.

In a video shared by Pradip Bhandari, CEO of Jan Ki Baat, one witness stated that few intoxicated Muslim men had gathered under their house. As people around the temple stopped them, they brought in more than 300-400 men to attack. He further alleged that Imran Hussain (AAP MLA) came and supported the Muslim mob but no one came in their support.

In another video shared by Bhandari, the priest of the temple can be heard stating that Muslim mob would have killed them had they not closed the door of the temple from inside. The priest also alleged that the mob even abused them.

The Delhi police which chose to refer the communal attack as “altercation and scuffle over parking issue” has tweeted that they have taken legal action and are making efforts to pacify both sides.

According to reports, the Durga Mata Mandir in Lal Kuan in Chandni Chowk area became the target of vandalism by a mob of 300-400 people on the night of June 30, 2019. According to police, this was triggered by a skirmish caused by an argument over parking. When the argument over parking in the area became intense, some people started pelting stones. Later in the night a mob entered the temple and vandalised it. The police have confirmed that Muslim youths in the area attacked the temple.

Union Minister and Chandni Chowk MP Dr Harsh Vardhan visited the site this morning and condemned the incident while appealing for peace. “The kind of thing done to the temple is unforgivable. I have been told that Police is already in action, culprits will be arrested soon and punished. I appeal to the people to maintain harmony,” he said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has maintained complete silence over the incident.
