Cricket World Cup preview – New Zealand v Pakistan: Pakistan needs to win again

In the 1992 World Cup at this stage of the tournament, Pakistan has won the match against New Zealand. Not once but twice, in the group stage and then in the semi-finals. Those two games were the only games which the Kiwis lost in World Cup 1992. Can Pakistan beat the Kiwis again? Well, the records say so, Pakistan won 6 games against New Zealand in World Cup clashes and lost only two.

Pakistan has comprehensively won the match against South Africa at Lord’s. The batting clicked well due to the inclusion of Haris Sohail and their bowling is known as their greatest strength. However, they have been pathetic when it comes to fielding. They have so far dropped 14 catches in the tournament, the most by any team. If they do not raise the standard of their fielding, it would be too difficult for them to reach the semis.

New Zealand, the unbeaten team of World Cup, needs just one win to qualify for the semis. They would hope to win it here as their next two games are against one of the strongest teams of the World Cup, Australia, and England). They have won close matches against teams like Bangladesh, South Africa, and West Indies when they should have won it comfortably. They should not let the opposition to make a comeback, else it could be curtains down for them as well in the tournament.

The weather for the match at Edgbaston is predicted to be warm and sunny for the day.

Players to watch out

Haris Sohail was in top form against South Africa and because of him, Pakistan’s middle order has started to look more solid than ever before. He can strike the balls against any bowler in any given situation.

Kane Williamson who has scored 2 hundred in 2 games would be eager to score one more hundred in today’s game, and win the match for his team to qualify for the semis. Being the captain he has the extra responsibility of motivating players and making plans for the team in a crunch situation. His calmness has already proved that he is one the best captain in this tournament so far.

55 countries of the Asia-Pacific group, including Pakistan, endorse India for non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council

In a major diplomatic win, 55 countries of the Asia-Pacific group at the UN have endorsed India for a 2-year non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council in 2021/22.

The elections to the non-permanent seats of UN Security Council would be held next year. India is confident of winning the elections.

Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, tweeted a video thanking the 55 Asia-Pacific nations for their support.

In a tweet, he Akbaruddin shared a video showing the flag of the countries which have endorsed India including Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Cyprus, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Fiji, Indonesia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan and Pakistan.

India launched its campaign to win the UNSC seat at a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at the capital of Kyrgyzstan last month. Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj during a meeting said, “The SCO must support the member countries’ candidatures for the non-permanent membership of the UNSC for the years 2021-2022 and 2027-2028”.

After 8 years since the last term, India is seeking re-election into the non-permanent seat of the UNSC. Previously, India has been a non-permanent member of seven terms: 1950-51, 1967-68, 1972-73, 1977-78, 1984-85, 1991-92 and 2011-12.

The United Nations Security Council consists of five permanent members: United States, United Kingdom, China, Russia and France. Along with that, it has 10 non-permanent members elected by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

For several years now, India had been advocating for the expansion of the number of permanent seats in UN Security Council. Reforms had been hindered mainly due to the opposition of  ‘United for Consensus’, a 12-member group that opposes adding permanent members, has used the technicality of preventing the adoption of a negotiating text to be the basis of the discussions and go forward.

Congress gave a full toss to Modi, Modi hit the ball out of the stadium

The Congress party has a habit of scoring political self-goals. However, it seems that they have never learnt from their past mistakes of resorting to personal attacks against PM Modi and repeated the same blunder in the first session of newly elected 17th Lok Sabha.

This time it was party’s newly elected Leader of the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who had asked Prime Minister Modi on whether he has managed to send Congress President and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi and his mother, former Congress President and Raebareli MP Sonia Gandhi to jail over corruption allegations.

Scoring a massive self-goal, Chowdhury had asked PM Modi whether he was able to ‘catch anybody’ in the 2G and coal allocation scam. He further told the Prime Minister that he came to power by calling Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and those leaders who were accused in the 2G and coal scams as thieves, “then how are they sitting in the Parliament?”

However, on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who never misses any chance to put his opponents to the ground chose to reply back to Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s tirade.

Social media hailed PM Modi for his witty response to the Congress leadership following Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s challenge to the government.

Speaking for the first time in the Parliament after the BJP-led NDA government was voted back to power with a thumping majority, PM Modi responded to Congress Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s remarks. PM Modi took a jibe on Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and said that it’s not emergency that anybody can be put in jail. We work according to the law and if someone was getting bail then he should enjoy it. They don’t indulge in vendetta.

“The country was not under Emergency and due process of law will be followed. If you get bail, enjoy it,” PM Modi said in a veiled reference to Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

Invoking the Emergency of 1975, Prime Minister Narendra Modi rejected Congress allegations that it was targeting Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and said “due process” will be followed while continuing the attack on corruption. PM Modi further said that his government will continue to take action against corruption.

Replying to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address in Lok Sabha, PM Modi underscored that the Congress had no right to criticise him repeatedly, while attacking the Congress on the Emergency, for failing to empower people, especially Muslims and for ignoring its own leaders.

Mirzapur: Mob beats up young man going to temple, Sunauvvar Ali and others arrested

On Sunday, a young man in Ahraura, Mirzapur, going to the famous Bhandari Devi Temple for a Darshan was attacked and beaten up by a mob. As per a report in Patrika.com, the incident of a coordinated attack on a man going to temple had created tension in the area which has now subsided after the police arrested the three main accused involved in the crime.

As per the report, over a dozen Muslim men had attacked a young man, a resident of Chowk Muhalla in Ahraura, Mirzapur on his way to the Bhandari Devi Temple. After the incident, several people had protested before the police station, condemning the attack and had demanded action from the police over the matter.

The protests reportedly continued till about 11 pm on Sunday night and were pacified only after the police station in-charge Amit Kumar Singh assured the crowd that police will take adequate action in the matter.

Taking swift action, the police then searched and arrested the main accused in the incident. Speaking to OpIndia, a police official confirmed that three accused, namely, Sonu, son of Maksood, Sunauvvar Ali, and Waheed have been arrested for attacking and beating up the young man.

Producing the accused in the local SDJM court, the police also stated that the accused are a threat to the law and order of the area. The court, taking cognisance of the issue, had reportedly rejected the bail applications of the three men and has ordered them into 14-day judicial custody.

Video and statistical highlights from Australia v England match

Oh, England, what have you done again! One step closer to making an early exit from the World Cup. On the other hand, Australia, as ruthless as they are known to be, especially in the World Cup tournament, becomes the first team to qualify for the semis.

England won the toss and decided to bowl first, despite knowing the two games they had lost in the tournament was due to batting second.

Australia started well, just like in all other matches. Both the openers added 123 runs for the first wicket; their 3rd hundred runs partnership of the tournament, one of the primary reasons for their success. David Warner (53) became the first batsman to reach 500 runs in this World Cup. But both the openers lost their wicket after reaching the milestones, Warner after reaching 500 runs, Finch after scoring his second hundred of the tournament.

The middle and lower order added a decent amount of runs, but yet not able to set a target of more than 300 runs for England. Australia finished at 285 for 7 in their 50 overs.

England had a terrible start to their innings, losing Vince on the second ball of the innings. Not one top-order batsman looked comfortable against Starc and Behrendorff. Soon they were struggling at 26 for 3 in 6 overs. The pressure started to mount to score quickly, and in the process, Jonny Bairstow too lost his wicket. Ben Stokes (89), added 71 runs with Jos Buttler for the 5th wicket, these two were England’s last hope to win the match. But Buttler was caught at deep square leg, and then Starc removed Stokes with a peach of a delivery, ending all the hopes for English fans. Both Starc and Behrendorff dominated the innings by taking 4 and five wickets respectively. Aaron Finch was declared Man of the Match for his fine hundred in the match.

Watch – Match Highlights

STATS

  • Finch scored his second hundred of this tournament, only Ganguly (3 in 2003) has scored more centuries in a World Cup edition as captain.

  • Warner and Finch scored the third 100 run partnership in the tournament; they were only the 4th pair after de Silva/Gurusinha in 1996, Gilchrist/Hayden in 2007 and  Dilshan/Sangakkara in 2015 to achieve this feat.
  • Starc and Behrandorff took nine wickets, only for the first time in World Cup history two left-hand pacers took nine wickets against a team in a match.

Madhya Pradesh: Kamal Nath govt decides to withdraw nearly 50,000 cases filed against Congress leaders and workers

In a controversial decision, the Congress-led Madhya Pradesh government has decided to withdraw nearly 50,000 cases filed against Congress workers and leaders in the state in the last 15 years, reported Asian Age.

According to the report, the decision of the Kamal Nath government to allow Congress workers to get away in nearly 50,000 cases comes after a cabinet meeting which was held earlier in January. The Congress government had decided to withdraw cases filed against Congress workers and leaders in the state during the 15-year-rule of BJP in Madhya Pradesh.

After the cabinet decision, the state government had constituted three-member district level committees comprising district collector, superintendent of police and district prosecutor to examine such cases and forward them to state home department to initiate the process to withdraw cases filed against Congress workers.

“Around 50,000 cases have been identified by the district committees and later referred to state home department for withdrawal”, the official spokesman said.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Kamal Nath government was set to table a bill which would scrap all cases against politicians and farmers filed in the last 15 years. The bill is expected to be presented in the monsoon session.

However, the BJP cried foul over the decision to withdraw cases filed against Congress workers and leaders in the state by Kamal Nath government.

Shashi Tharoor distorts government reply given in Parliament, presents 3-year-old numbers as current data

On 25 June, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor posted a tweet saying that even after decriminalisation of homosexuality by the Supreme Court, there are thousands of cases still pending in courts under section 377. He alleged this by quoting the answer given by the home ministry to his question on the number of cases under section 377 of IPC.

However, Tharoor’s assertion that thousands of cases under this section at present is wrong and misleading, which can be proved by a casual reading of the answer given by the ministry.

Shashi Tharoor had asked the Ministry Home Affairs whether it is aware that the Supreme Court had read down section 377 and made all sexual acts between two consenting adults is legal. He also wanted to know the number of cases of sexual cases between two consenting adults pending at trial, appellate and revisional stages in various courts in the country as on 6th September 2018. He had also sought a state-wise breakup of this data, and whether the ministry had urged the states to withdraw cases under section 377 involving consensual sex between adults.

The written reply [pdf] to the question was furnished by G Kishan Reddy, the minister of state in the home ministry. The reply says that the Supreme Court has decriminalised cases under section 377 for the consensual sexual relationship between adults. On the subject of withdrawing cases, the ministry says that it is for the states and union territories to consider withdrawing the cases as per law.

The ministry then provided the data of pending cases under section 377. The reply says that the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) compiles and publishes crime statistics in its publication named ‘Crime in India’. The ministry also clearly mentions that state-wise detail of cases under this section pending trial is available till the year 2016 only. The ministry annexed a list of state-wise pending cases under section 377 during 2014-16.

Reply of the home ministry

The home ministry has made it clear that it does not have up to date data in this regard, and it has data only till 2016. The Supreme Court order decriminalising consensual adult homosexuality came on 6th September 2018, which means the data provided by the home ministry belongs to a period where it was still a crime according to the law in India.

Moreover, the data for 2014-16 does not give a break-up of consensual adult relationships and other relations which are still crimes. Homosexual relation with minors, non-consensual sexual act (rape) and bestiality (sexual activity with non-human animals) are still crimes under section 377, and this means that that number provided by the government includes all those numbers too, not just consensual relations.

In an attempt to show the Modi government in poor light, Shashi Tharoor deliberately hides these important factors and accuses that thousands of cases of still pending under section 377 at present. The fact is, at present no data is available on the number of pending cases after the Supreme Court order, hence the Congress leader is clearly lying.

BJP Bengal youth wing recites Hanuman Chalisa on the road to protest Friday namaz offering on the road which blocks traffic

The BJP Bengal youth wing on Tuesday took to streets of Howrah to recite Hanuman Chalisa on the streets where Hanuman temples are there as a mark of protest to the Friday namaz which are offered on the streets.

OP Singh, the BJYM (Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha) President said that the GT Road is blocked for Friday namaz which is being offered on the roads. As per him, the road blocked because of namaz leads to chaos, traffic jams and causes a lot of harassment to people including patients who are trying to reach hospital and office-goers.

“In Mamata Banerjee’s rule, we’ve seen Grand Trunk Road and other main roads are blocked on Fridays for namaz. Patients die, people can’t go to the office on time. As long as it continues, we’ll recite Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays on all main roads near Hanuman temples,” he added.

Illegal gatherings for namaz has been a constant source of bother for authorities. Hindu outfits had demanded a ban on namaz at public places in Haryana. Haryana CM Khattar had also criticized them saying that namaz should be offered at mosques and not on public spaces. The Madras High Court had ruled in July that public places cannot be encroached upon for the purpose of offering prayers. In December last year, the Noida Police had issued an advisory notice to companies in sector 58, asking their administrations to dissuade their employees from visiting nearby parks for offering namaz. The police asserted that the companies must ensure that their officials use office premises or mosques for Namaz but not public places.

Islamists attack newly elected TMC MP Nusrat Jahan for wearing Sindoor in parliament

The newly elected TMC lawmaker from Basirhat, Nusrat Jahan who recently married her long-time beau businessman Nikhil Jain found herself at the receiving end of the Islamists’ fury. Chauvinistic Muslims resorted to insulting her with bigoted comments online for apparently marrying outside her community. They also seemed unhappy about her embracing her husband’s culture in the Indian Parliament.

Jahan took oath as a member of the 17th Lok Sabha with her post-marriage name Nusrat Jahan Ruhi Jain today. She also wore a saree and sindoor while appearing in the parliament for the oath-taking. However, this was not acceptable to a certain section of fundamentalists who started hurling abuses at her. These radical Islamists were visibly rattled about the fact that a Muslim actor and politician had converted to Hinduism and was espousing Hindu cultural practices in the Parliament.

Nusrat married her long-time beau, businessman Nikhil Jain in Turkey on June 19, 2019. She had applied sindoor, essentially a Hindu tradition followed by married Hindu women that didn’t sit well with the Islamic religious supremacists. In response, they started reviling Nusrat for embracing Hindu cultural mores and traditions.

Nusrat also invoked chants of Vande Mataram towards the end of her oath, thereby further inviting the wrath of the Islamic zealots online. Many online extremists also called her a Kaafir- a pejorative reference used for non-Muslims.

Such is the profound hatred for Hindu traditions and cultural practices among these online Islamist extremists that they don’t hesitate in expressing their unmitigated vitriol and utter disdain for cultural practices and traditions that form an integral part for the majority of the people in the country.

Journalist with JK24X7 files a criminal case against actor Salman Khan: Accuses him of robbery, assault and criminal intimidation

A journalist working for a news channel named JK24X7 has filed a criminal complaint against Bollywood superstar Salman Khan on June 25 before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Andheri, Mumbai. Two of Salman’s bodyguards, including one named Vijay, have also been named in the complaint.

The journalist has accused the actor of robbery, assault, criminal mischief and criminal intimidation under section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 392 (punishment for robbery), 426 (punishment for mischief), 506(II) (punishment for criminal intimidation, attracting three years of rigorous imprisonment if found guilty), R/W. 34 (Prima facie, this act amounts to attempt to murder under section 307 IPC) from the IPC.

The case dates back to April 2019. The complainant had then filed a police complaint against Khan for snatching a journalist’s mobile phone while he was trying to shoot a video of the actor.

In the criminal complaint filed, journalist Ashok Shyamlal Pandey refers to the incident which transpired on April 24, 2019, at about 4.40 pm, causing him severe mental and physical torture at the hands of the actor and his associates. The complainant was travelling in his car from Juhu to Kandivali with his cameraman Sayyed Irfan when he spotted the actor on his cycle, escorted by his bodyguards.

Copy of the complaint against Salman KhanThe journalist recounted that after taking due permission from Khan’s bodyguards, they started photographing the actor. However, after Khan realized he was being filmed, the journalist was suddenly attacked by the actor’s bodyguards. In the meanwhile, Khan too joined them.

According to the complaint filed, the three assaulted, abused and misbehaved with the journalist and the cameraman and snatched away the journalist’s mobile phone. Though the journalist mentions that he informed Khan about filming him with due permission, Khan ignored his plea and deleted some important information from his phone. The complainant said that Khan even tried to break his phone and soon after left the spot. He further added while they were dialling 100, Khan’s bodyguards returned his phone.

The copy of the complaint further states that police authorities not only delayed the investigation but also disposed off the complaint in two months suggesting no such illegal act and/or offence was found in the matter.

Pandey has also stated in the written copy of the complaint that one Mr Zohaib had approached him for out of court settlement on behalf of the accused. He added that Mr Zohaib not only admitted that the illegal act took place but also requested to settle the matter, which was duly denied by him.

The court is likely to pass an order on July 12, 2019.

Khan was previously convicted by Jodhpur court in the blackbuck poaching case. Actors Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam and Tabu were also involved in the case but were acquitted. Khan reportedly had shot and killed two blackbucks (chinkaras) in the Bhagoda ki Dhani village and the complaint against him was registered on October 2, 1998. He was also accused of carrying firearms with expired licenses.
