In dry Bihar, Lok Sabha candidate arrested after he turns up drunk to file nomination

An independent Lok Sabha candidate for Purnea Rajiv Kumar Singh was arrested on Tuesday after he turned up drunk to file nominations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Bihar has alcohol prohibition which was brought in by the Nitish Kumar government which prohibits sale and consumption of liquor in the state.

However, despite the alcohol prohibition, Singh arrived drunk for submitting his papers for the nomination. Election Observer M Shailendran said that Singh stank of liquor when he arrived at the Collectorate in north Bihar district.

Singh was then made to undergo breath analyser test which confirmed that he had consumed alcohol. Following that, he was booked for violating the prohibition law and sent to jail.

The NDA is fielding JD(U)’s Santosh Kushwaha from Purnea and Congress has given a ticket to Uday Singh, former BJP MP. As of now, 17 people have filed their nomination for Purnea of which 11 submitted their papers yesterday.

Ram Madhav bats for early assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir, slams Abdullah and Mufti for boycotting panchayat polls

Calling National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti self-serving politicians, BJP General Secretary and in-charge Jammu and Kashmir, Ram Madhav has called for early assembly polls in the strife-torn state of Jammu and Kashmir. Ram asserted that the party has requested the Election Commission to hold elections in the state early.

Addressing the media in Srinagar, Ram Madhav lambasted the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and called them selfish. While referring to Centre’s tough stand on Article 35A and Article 370, Ram highlighted that NC and PDP had opposed it and boycotted last year’s local body polls but they are ready to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Madhav stressed on the fact that the BJP’s stand on these issue has remained consistent.

President’s rule was imposed in the state in December last year after the expiry of six months of governor’s rule. Mehbooba Mufti had to resign from the CM position after BJP withdrew its support to the PDP in the state in June 2018.

Madhav also took a dig at the regional parties NC and PDP by alleging that they are promoting dynasty politics while the BJP has selected candidates based on merit. “We have rejected candidature of many on the basis of dynasties. We have given tickets only to those who have worked in the party for many years,” he said.

‘Journalist’ Abhisar Sharma caught handing out paper to interviewee, Twitterati speculate whether it was money

Self-proclaimed journalist Abhisar Sharma, who often comes up with bizarre conspiracy theories and indulges in false propaganda to discredit Narendra Modi government seems to be involved in a controversy as he has been caught handing out ‘something’ to one of the villagers in a live show. After the video surfaced, social media users thought it was a ‘bribe’ given to villager to speak against the BJP government.

A video has gone viral on social media in which Abhisar Sharma is seen handing out something which has lead to serious speculation among the social media users that Abhisar Sharma was indulging in an ‘orchestrated’ interview to target Narendra Modi and indulging in false propaganda to influence voters through his Anti-Modi videos.

A Twitter user ‘Chowkidar Shivam’, known by @shtoons has posted a video questioning whether Abhisar Sharma was influencing those villagers to speak in his favour by distributing money to the villagers.

In the meantime, we at OpIndia checked the authenticity of the video and found that the video posted by various social media was found to be true as Abhisar Sharma had himself published these videos. However, we are not sure whether Abhisar Sharma bribed the villagers to influence the villagers to express negatively against PM Modi as questioned by the social media users or whether he just passed a piece of paper to one of those elderly villagers.

However, Abhisar Sharma has refuted all these allegations and threatened social media users of lodging a police complaint. He has claimed that he merely gave back a news article that the gentleman had given him and he can prove it. The proof, however, is yet to come.

As a part of his election tourism, Abhisar Sharma had visited few areas of Western Uttar Pradesh to known the views of the voters ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, most of his conversations with the voters belonging to areas of Meerut, Muzaffarnagar indicated that he was mostly asking some leading questions to make sure that the responses could be then depicted as a wave against both the central government led by Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Abhisar Sharma, who claims to be a journalist has been known for his hatred towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sharma has been caught several times on social media for indulging in false propaganda and false news. In one of his videos during the tragic Amritsar Train accident, Abhisar Sharma had resorted to spreading fake news after he had said that the train’s top headlight was not functioning which had resulted in the tragic accident which had claimed 60 lives.

However, days later it was found that the train which had run over people at Amritsar did not have any top headlight at all contrary to Abhisar Sharma’s claims of non-functioning headlights. Additionally, Abhisar Sharma is associated with another left-wing propaganda website, The Wire, which often does anti-India campaigns and publishes fake news to demean Hindus.

Mission Shakti: Here is why India’s capability to shoot down enemy satellites is a massive feat

On 27th March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India has acquired the critical capability to shot down artificial satellites on orbit. During a televised address to the nation, Modi informed that India joined an elite group of only three countries to have this capability, US, Russia and China. Under the Mission Shakti program, Indian scientists successfully shot down a target satellite on the Low Earth Orbit of 300 km altitude using an A-Sat (anti-satellite) missile developed by DRDO.

Intercepting satellites in orbit is very complex and the mission was conducted at extremely high speed with remarkable precision, as informed by PM Modi. He said that It shows the remarkable dexterity of India’s outstanding scientists and the success of our space programme. He informed that the entire mission was completed in just 3 minutes.

China had demonstrated its ability to shoot down satellites on orbit when they successfully destroyed a defunct Chinese weather satellite in January 2007. They did further tests in 2013 and 2018 with weapons that can target satellites. After that, it had become crucial for India to have similar technology for strategic reasons. According to reports, Indian scientists had already developed the missile technology to achieve the same by 2012, but the then UPA government didn’t sanction the project.

In a press briefing during the 97th Indian Science Congress in Thiruvananthapuram in 2010, the Defence Research and Development Organisation had announced that India was developing the necessary technology that could be combined to produce a weapon to destroy enemy satellites in orbit. On February 10, 2010, Defence Research and Development Organisation Director-General and Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister, Dr VK Saraswat had stated that India has all the building blocks necessary to integrate an anti-satellite weapon to neutralize hostile satellites in low earth and polar orbits.

In an interview, Saraswat had suggested that India’s anti-ballistic missile (ABM) defence program could be utilized as an ASAT weapon, along with its Agni series of missiles. This was corroborated by DRDO, which said that the Indian Ballistic Missile Defense Program can incorporate anti-satellite weapon development. It was speculated in defence forums that India was developing an exo-atmospheric kill vehicle that can be integrated with the missile to engage satellites.

It is also important to note that with the recent successes of India’s Moor and Mars missions and the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D5), the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has the capability to launch satellites weighing in excess of two tons, an important prerequisite for the deployment of any weapons system.

Shooting down live satellites on orbit has significant geopolitical implications and it requires strong political will to go ahead with this technology. Satellites are one of the most crucial technology in the modern era which forms the backbone of communications networks. They are most vital for defence forces, which are crucial in communications, intelligence gathering, and field operations. Therefore, the ability to protect own satellites and attack enemy satellites if needed are vital during a war. And the Modi government has shown the political will to develop and demonstrate this capability.

Although many people are trying to dismiss today’s achievement as a mere space program which didn’t require an announcement by the PM, that is incorrect. It was a missile test done by DRDO, not a rocket test by ISRO. This was a demonstration of a new capability acquired by India’s defence forces which also have geopolitical implications, that’s why it needed to be the addressed by the prime minister himself.

Prime minister Modi also reassured the international community that the Indian government will use this technology in defence of the nation, and India’s stated doctrine of no first offence will remain in place.

‘Kya khoob thagti ho, 5 saal baad hi kyu Amethi dikhti ho?’: Posters against Priyanka Gandhi emerge in Rahul Gandhi’s constituency

There has been a rebellion brewing in Amethi against the Nehru-Gandhi Parivar. Discontentment has been spreading fast and there have been reports of Rahul Gandhi looking for a safe seat elsewhere. Recently, a former Congress loyalist, Haroon Rashid, decided to contest against the party president from Amethi.

Now, it appears posters have surfaced against General Secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh East Priyanka Gandhi ahead of her 3-day visit to the street. Posters have emerged which call her a fraud and ask her to answer for the 60 years her party was in power in the country. It is, however, unclear who has put these posters up.

One of the posters say, “Kya khoob thagti ho, kyu 5 saal baad hi Amethi dikhti ho? 60 saalon ka jawaab do! (How beautifully you con, why do you appear in Amethi only once in 5 years? Answer for your 60 years!)”

Another poster that has emerged says, “You’ve made a lot of promises in May 2014, now after 5 years, with what plans you have come again to befool us again, answer for your 60 years.”

Similar posters have emerged against the Congress President’s sister as well. Last year in posters that emerged that Rae Baereli, Priyanka Gandhi was described as an ’emotional blackmailer’.

Rahul Gandhi has been accused of negligence towards his constituency Amethi as a consequence of which he is facing tough competition from Smriti Irani this year. Once, during one particular interaction with school children in Amethi, some kids asked him had voiced their concerns to which the Congress President had shrugged off his responsibilities as an MP and asked them to question Prime Minister Modi instead.

Goa: Catholic Church continues its interference in politics, issues advisory to ‘teach a lesson’ by voting

The Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), a social arm of the Church in Goa, has asked Goans to reject the ‘terror of pseudo-nationalism’ and urged the citizens to teach a lesson to “corrupt defectors” and political opportunists. As per reports, the council has issued an advisory named as ‘Vote Wisely, Vote Smartly’ for the upcoming elections in the state.

It is notable here that the CSJP and the Church of Goa have been criticised before for their attempts to interfere in politics and sway voters in Goa.

Executive Secretary of the Council, Fr. Savio Fernandes, released this statement as Goa gears up for the Lok Sabha elections and bypolls for three Assembly seats.

Two Congress MLAs had resigned from the Legislative Assembly and party and joined the BJP, while Mapusa bypoll was needed due to the death of sitting BJP MLA Francis D’Souza. The elections for the two Lok Sabha seats and three assembly seats are to be held on April 23.

“Let us also give corrupt defectors and opportunists the due electoral response. Let us not be carried away by petty and trivial issues but think of the overall interest of the nation and of our state,” Fernandes said in a statement issued.

The statement by the council also took the line often taken by leftists, it read, “When rightful and timely information is denied, reports and surveys tweaked to suppress inconvenient facts, critical dissent crushed by labeling it as anti-national and as urban Naxalism, when hoodlums run riot on streets in the guise of nationalism – the defensive counter claims of ‘no corruption’ and ‘scam free governance’ become totally hollow.”

The statement also reportedly asked voters to be wary of cow-vigilantism and mentioned that Love jihad is a ‘paranoia’ while cautioning about ‘other such forms of extremism’.

Speaking specifically about Goa, the Council in its statement urged people not to vote for defectors saying that political defections were tearing the very basic fabric of democracy.

Though the statement did not name any political parties, it included an obvious reference to the government formation in Goa in 2017. The statement expressed its disapproval of the BJP government formation. It read, “Another evil is the blatant engineering of defections in violation of the people’s mandate. Moreover, persons who deceive and betray people’s trust should have no scope in democracy”.

The statement further says that every five years, citizens are given the opportunity to elect a government that will preserve the Constitutional values importantly secularism and democracy.

“All that is needed to overturn the values and principles of our Constitution is the support of a requisite number of Members of Parliament and State Legislators. The vote of every citizen is therefore very precious. Upon it hangs the future of our nation,” it says.

Without naming any political party the advisory said that there is a need for a responsible approach which would reflect on whether the basic principles of tolerance, inclusiveness, justice, transparency, and accountability are seen in public life.

The statement also discussed the press conference by four Supreme Court judges last year. It also highlighted the arrest of the alleged Urban Naxals over the Bhima-Koregaon incident and called the use of sedition laws as “A tool of erstwhile colonial powers” being used against “Critics, dissenters and pro-poor activists”.

Interestingly, the advisory also calls upon the people not to fall for “Nice candidates” as they are ultimately bound by party guidelines. It also urges voters not to fall for ‘symbolic gestures’ and trivial issues either.

Church interference in politics has been an evident phenomenon in recent times. Soon after Manohar Parrikar became the CM in 2017, a Church magazine had called voters not to vote for him in the Panjim bypolls.

The same Council For Social Justice and Peace had also made veiled statements against the NDA before the Goa assembly elections of 2017. Goa has a 27% Catholic population.

Not only in Goa, But churches in Meghalaya, Nagaland, and even the Archdiocese of Delhi have been known for their attempts to interfere in politics and sway the opinions of Christian voters against a particular party, usually the BJP and its allies, by using the pseudo-liberals’ favorite narrative of intolerance and secularism.

Before the Gujarat Assembly elections, the Archdiocese of Gandhinagar was also in the news for its blatantly communal letter to its followers where it had warned them “Nationalist forces are on the verge of taking over the country” and had stated that “The power of prayer saved Europe from being taken over by the people of another faith.”

Setback for Mamata? Ex-TMC leader who recently joined BJP says 100 others would follow soon

BJP leader Arjun Singh, who has recently crossed over from TMC, has stated that about 100 MLAs from the Trinamool Congress will be joining the BJP soon. As per reports, the TMC has declined to offer a counter to his statement and has stated that he should see a doctor.

Arjun Singh, a four-time MLA from Bhatpara, had recently switched to BJP after the TMC denied him the MP ticket from Barackpore. Sitting MP Dinesh Trivedi was given the ticket. Singh had stated that the people of Barackpore were unhappy with the sitting MP and would have preferred him (Singh) as an MP.

Singh is considered a heavyweight leader with a large support base of ground workers and local leaders. His defection to BJP was stated as a considerable loss to Mamata’s party. Singh will be contesting against his TMC rival on a BJP ticket for the Barackpore Lok Sabha seat.

Several TMC leaders have defected to the BJP recently. Two sitting MPs Saumitra Khan from Bishnupur, and Anupam Hazra from the Bolpur seat also had switched to BJP in recent weeks.

Apart from Khan and Hazra, the BJP is believed to be in talks with sitting MLAs Sovan Chatterjee, MLA from Behala east and Sabyasachi Dutta, MLA from Rajarhat New Town. Sovan Chatterjee was a prominent TMC minister till he fell out of favor with Mamata.

Chatterjee and his friend Baisakhi Chatterjee were reportedly threatened by TMC workers and confined to a bungalow. TMC leader Arubrato Mondal had allegedly stated that if Sovan Chatterjee and his friend dared to join BJP, they will be ‘Khallas’ (finished).

The BJP has been campaigning aggressively in West Bengal. TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee also seems to have an assessment of the threat the BJP might pose for her as her government had tried every trick in the book to stop BJP leaders from holding rallies in the state.

The TMC government has attempted to stop BJP leaders Amit Shah, Shivraj Chouhan, Yogi Adityanath, and Shahnawaz Hussain from holding rallies or landing their helicopters under various pretenses. Mamata Banerjee’s government also did not allow the BJP to hold its mega campaigning Rath Yatra in the state last year.

BJP senior leader and national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain has been campaigning in West Bengal. Yesterday in his rally in Jalpaiguri, Hussain stated that Bengal will witness a paradigm shift in the coming days.

Why BJP carried out a midnight surgical strike on its “ally” in Goa

The Goa unit of the BJP pulled off a stunning coup late last night. It weaned away 2 of the 3 Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Legislative Party (MGP) MLAs in Goa and they joined the BJP overnight. Since two thirds of the party had resigned and joined a new party, anti defection laws did not apply to the MLAs and they did not have to resign from their seats

The 2 MLAs who switched over are Tourism Minister Manohar “Babu” Azgaonkar and Deepak Pawooskar. With their entry, it is expected that the now lone remaining MGP MLA, Deputy CM Sudin Dhavlikar will be dropped from the Government and Deepak Pawooskar would be inducted into the Government. The exercise happened in the presence of Goa CM Pramod Sawant and acting speaker Michael Lobo. Soon after, Goa BJP state chief Vinay Tendulkar also met the duo.

The main question which would come to anyone’s mind: Why did BJP break an “ally’s party”? There are many reasons for this.

Relations between BJP and MGP have been strained for many months. Late last year, few Congress MLAs in Goa had resigned and had planned to recontest on BJP tickets. This was not a good situation for MGP as a stronger BJP meant MGP’s position was weaker. Hence in a very odd move the “ally MGP” filed a petition in the High Court to restrain these MLAs from recontesting. Of course, the High Court threw the petition out.

Next, once BJP announced the Shiroda seat would be contested by Subhas Shiridkar, who had switched over from Congress, the MGP too announced that they too would contest the Shiroda seat. This was in complete contrast to coalition dharma.

Yesterday was said to be the last day for MGP to back off from the contest, but even yesterday, Dipak Dhavlikar, brother of Sudin Dhavlikar was adamant on contesting against the BJP.

This move of indiscipline probably forces BJP to display its strength and they managed to pry away 2 MGP MLAs.

Besides this, all was not well within MGP as well. Last week, after Parrikar’s demise, as the calculations for the new government were on, the MGP had reportedly passed a resolution to secure 3 cabinet berths for all 3 MLAs. But finally, only 2 MGP MLAs were given ministries, leaving Pawooskar in the cold.

It was rumoured that these were the machinations of the Dhavlikar brothers, and even then, it was suspected that BJP had wooed the 2 MGP MLAs. More recently, MGP expelled their current general secretary former MLA Lavoo Mamlatdar for 6 years, for “anti-party activities”.

Scathing sting: Congress leader says Rahul Gandhi will win from Wayanad because Hindus are a minority in the constituency

With just days left for the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party seems to be still in a state of confusion over finding a safe seat for its President Rahul Gandhi. As Smriti Irani’s acceptability in Amethi has grown in the last few years, Congress party believes that it is extremely tough for Rahul Gandhi to retain his seat.

According to a Times Now report, Congress Party has finally arrived at a decision to field Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency as it is believed to be a traditional Congress bastion comprising of over 50 per cent of minority votes.

In a sting video, a senior Congress Party leader can be seen saying Congress President Rahul Gandhi is facing pressure in Amethi and has to find a safe seat, implying that he should contest from Wayanad as Hindus form a minority in Wayanad constituency which will ensure an easy victory for Rahul Gandhi.

“The total Christian-Muslim vote is about 50%. It comes to around 54% which makes easier for Rahul. And the thing is there are 8% Adivasis who are with us. Actually, Wayanad has been a Congress stronghold since 1957,” said a Congress leader in Times Now sting video.

“We have done the preliminary steps. If Rahul Gandhi decides to comes here. If Rahul Gandhi decides to fight from here, there is no need for campaigning,” added Kerala Congress leader.

The Congress leader said that BJP is taking all measures to corner Rahul Gandhi as several leaders even from Amethi Congress have now joined BJP, so Rahul Gandhi is surely looking for a safe seat to contest from. He also said that from Wayanad, SDPI would also support the Congress party.

It should be remembered that members of Islamist outfit SDPI were arrested for the brutal murder of 20-year-old student leader Abhimanyu. Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political wing of the Muslim extremist organisation Popular Front of India (PFI), which has been accused of spreading Islamist terror, has also been accused of sending death threats to Kerala based inter-faith couple Harrison, a Christian and Shahana. Its parent organisation, PFI has been indicted in several cases. For example, the NIA in its chargesheet had indicted PFI members for a larger conspiracy behind the murder of Munnani activist. India Today had even exposed the organization for engaging in the brainwashing and conversion of Hindu women through its network of illegal financing

Congress President Rahul Gandhi is reportedly looking for a safe seat as Congress party believes that winning Amethi against Union Minister Smriti Irani will be a herculean task for Rahul Gandhi. Hence, Congress Party is on a contingency plan to field Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, which has 29% Muslim votes and another 21% Christian votes.

It is interesting to see that Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who had indulged in soft-Hindutva with a ‘Temple run’ right before Gujarat elections and claims to be Janeudhari Brahmin, has lately toned down his pro-Hindutva image to garner the traditional Congress votes of Muslims and Christians. Addition to that, Congress party leaders also believe that Rahul Gandhi victory is easily ensured only in those constituencies where half of the total voters are either Muslims or belong to other minorities groups.

Congress party seems to have understood that Rahul Gandhi will be facing a tough fight in Amethi as not only Smriti Irani has better traction in these regions but also these constituencies are majorly comprised with Hindu vote bank. As the chances of Rahul Gandhi defeating Smriti Irani in Amethi is getting tough day after day, Congress party seems to have realised that it is easy for Rahul Gandhi to pull an easy victory from constituencies where minority votes are much larger compared to Hindu votes.
