A case of sexual assault of a minor student within a madrasa has surfaced in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh. The accused has been identified as Maulana Chand Mohammad who teaches at the religious institution. He is also accused of making other kids massage his private parts with oil. The maulana absconded after the incident and has been expelled from the madrasa. The victim of the sexual assault is an orphan. The authorities have called the incident a quarrel among the children. The instance transpired in the Garhi Pukhta police station area of Shamli which is home to a madrasa named ‘Jamia Arabia Taleemul Quran’ in the Gurana village of Mumtaznagar.

Many students attend this madrasa for religious education, even from outside the village. A little boy, who has lost his parents and is being raised at the house of his maternal grandparents, also enrolled there. The perpetrator, who was appointed as a teacher at the facility, reportedly had unnatural sex with him several times. The locals asserted that Chand Mohammad has also sexually exploited other students as well. He summoned the young children to his room after the classes and had them massage his privates. He then proceeded to sexually violate them and threatened the helpless kids to scare them into silence.

The villagers came to know about the shocking information after some students started talking to each other about it which infuriated them. The villagers stated that Israel, the man who manages the madrasa, secretly arranged for Maulana Chand Mohammad to disappear after the matter started to escalate. Some people also demanded legal action against him along with the offender, while talking on camera. Garhi Pukhta Police Station in-charge Pravesh Kumar told the media that the police had received a verbal complaint but when the cops investigated the issue, it turned out to be a fight between children.

The Indian stock market indices plunged considerably on Monday, August 5, 2024, with Sensex nosediving over 2,500 points while Nifty plummeting over 900 points amidst weaker global sentiments, most notably a potential US recession, Japanese stock market crash, and the spectre of a potential Israel-Iran war have contributed to the mass sell-off. 

The Sensex is trading at 78,500 levels, down by about 2,500 points. On the other hand, Nifty is testing the 24,000 levels, down by over 660 points. 

Fear of an onset of recession in the US

The chief cause of the crash is linked to the uninspiring jobs report from the United States which has aggravated fears of a potential onset of recession. Worldwide, investors have become more cautious following the jobs report from the US that was weaker than anticipated, raising concerns about slowing economic growth. 

In July, the US unemployment rate increased to 4.3 per cent, and nonfarm payroll employment grew by only 114,000, fuelling fears of a weakening labour market and economic slowdown.

“The widespread belief in a soft landing for the US economy has largely fueled the surge in global stock markets. This belief is now at risk due to the decline in US job creation in July and the sharp increase in the US unemployment rate to 4.3 per cent,” stated V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

A report from Nomura indicated that the July employment report in the US showed significant cooling in the labour market. Although the data appears inconsistent, the risks are leaning towards the downside.

“Beyond the disappointing job gains and the unemployment rate, the household survey revealed an increase in job losses, which is often a precursor to a downturn. An unusual rise in temporary layoffs and signs of a negative weather effect suggests that the increase in job losses might be a temporary anomaly rather than the start of a worsening trend,” Nomura explained.

Spectre of Israel-Iran war following the assassination of Hamas leader Haniyeh

Additionally, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have contributed to the market’s decline. Fear of a full-blown war looms as Iran has vowed to take “revenge” for the killing of the Hamas chief, stating that the retaliatory actions will be “more diverse, more dispersed, and impossible to intercept.” The country is expected to launch an attack on Israel at any time.

Hamas leader Haniyeh was killed in a bomb blast in a special guesthouse during his stay in Iran for the presidential inauguration. A bomb planted months ago was detonated remotely, which caused the death of the Hamas leader. While Israel has not claimed its role in his assassination, Iran has stated that it was the handiwork of Mossad, the feared Israeli intelligence agency known for carrying out stealth assassinations of terrorists working against the interests of the Jewish nation. 

Japan’s Nikkei plunges to 37-year low

Besides weaker jobs data in the US and the fear of a looming Middle-East war, the mass sell-off in the Indian market was also triggered by an unprecedented crash in the Japanese stock market Nikkei, a shorthand for the Tokyo Stock Market Exchange. 

Japan’s Nikkei 225 share index plummeted down to 10% on Monday due to heavy selling driven by fears that the U.S. economy might be in worse condition than previously thought and a surge in Yen. 

By mid-afternoon in Tokyo, the Nikkei index had fallen over 3,500 points to 32,385.01.

After already declining 5.8% on Friday, the index is now on track for its worst two-day drop ever.

The last time the Nikkei experienced such a severe drop was during “Black Monday” in October 1987, when it fell by 3,836 points or 14.9%.

This recent decline follows the Bank of Japan’s decision on Wednesday to raise its benchmark interest rate to approximately the same level as a year ago.

Share prices in Tokyo have been falling since the announcement.

In addition, Asian equities plunged to multi-year lows on Monday as investors fled from risky assets to safe-haven bonds, driven by concerns that the Federal Reserve’s prolonged fight against inflation might have pushed the United States into a recession.

While the Indian economy is quite resilient to changes in the economic policies of other countries, as the 2008 global crisis demonstrated when India emerged from it reasonably unscathed and surging domestic demand, the Indian markets, however, cannot remain immune to the vicissitudes of a volatile world economy, racked with wars, weak job growth, and choppy investor sentiments in the short term. 

In the long run, however, the Indian stock market is set for sustained growth, supported by a robust influx of both foreign and domestic investments as India marches towards becoming the third largest economy in the world by 2027-2028.

On 4th August (local time) Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, issued a statement condemning the violence that happened across the country creating chaos. He said, “I utterly condemn the far-right thuggery we have seen this weekend,” blaming the protesting groups and individuals against immigrants for the violence. He made it clear that those involved in the violence would face the full force of the law. However, there have been reports that the government’s action is going to be selective.

Keir Starmer added that those who participated in the violence would face severe consequences. He said, “Be in no doubt: those who have participated in this violence will face the full force of the law. The police will be making arrests. Individuals will be held on remand. Charges will follow. And convictions will follow. I guarantee you will regret taking part in this disorder.”

Adding that those fanning protester sentiments online would also face the law. Keir Starmer said, “Whether directly or those whipping up this action online, and then running away themselves. This is not a protest. It is organized, violent thuggery. And it has no place on our street or online.” Detailing the current situation of the attacks on a hotel in Rotherham where immigrants were housed, he said, “Right now, attacks are happening on a hotel in Rotherham. Marauding gangs are intent on law breaking. Or worse. Windows smashed. Fires set ablaze. Residents and staff in absolute fear.”

He added, “There is no justification – none – for taking this action. And all right-minded people should be condemning this sort of violence. People in this country have a right to be safe.” Keir Starmer further highlighted that Muslims were being targeted along with other minority communities and said, “We’ve seen Muslim communities targeted. Attacks on Mosques. Other minority communities were singled out. Nazi salutes in the street. Attacks on the police. Wanton violence alongside racist rhetoric.” He added, “So, no, I won’t shy away from calling this what it is: Far-right thuggery. To those who feel targeted because of the colour of your skin or your faith, I know how frightening this must be. I want you to know this violent mob does not represent our country. And we will bring them to justice.”

Several videos of Islamist mobs shouting Allah-hu-Akbar went viral om social media. X user “Concerned Citizen” wrote, “Huge mob descend on Bolton City Centre – looks like they are baying for blood. If you’re in & around a city centre right now it’s advisable not to be. Seriously.”

Amy Mek wrote, “Jihadi Gangs Rampage Through UK Towns, Attacking Citizens!”

X user J Stewart wrote, “A mob of young Muslim men attack a lone protester in Middlesbrough, kicking and punching him repeatedly. Someone is going to get killed if this carries on. Keir Starmer has put a target on every protesters back by labelling them “far right”.”

‘Security only for mosques, not for other places of worship’

Notably, Visegrad 24 reported that the UK Government has confirmed that Jewish synagogues and Christian churches would not receive any emergency security support during the riots. On the other hand, the Home Secretary of Britain announced emergency security for all the mosques in the UK.

Violence erupted in UK following stabbing of three young girls

On 29th July, three young girls ages 6, 7 and 9 were killed in a stabbing incident at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class in northwestern England. Two of the girls lost their lives on the day of the incident while the third girl died the next day. Eight children and two adults were hospitalised after the attack. A 17-year-old suspect was arrested by the police for murder and attempted murder. Witnesses described the scene as “from a horror movie” as blood-soacked children ran from the attack to save themselves.

On 3rd August, anti-immigrant protests erupted across the United Kingdom after the stabbing incident at a dance class where three little girls were killed and several others were injured. Dozens of protests have been taking place across the country and law enforcement agencies are facing difficulties in controlling the protesters. Initially, far-right groups protested against the immigrants which led to protests by left-leaning groups to take on the roads.

The protests erupted following misleading information about the identity of the under 18 suspect of stabbing incident. It was said that he was Muslim immigrant but it was later revealed on a judge’s order that the suspect was 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana, a resident of Wales to Rwandan parents to stop the spread of misinformation.

Notably, online campaigns to gather support for the anti-immigrants protests have also raised alarms among law enforcement agencies. Phrases including “Enough are enough”, “save our kids” and “Stop the boats” have been identified by police officials as part of the campaigns.

One-sided action by the UK Government

Even though violence happened from both sides of the protesters, the UK government has decided to provide protection only to Muslims and establishments like Mosques that are directly linked to the Muslims living in the UK. The rhetoric being set by the UK government is that if someone is against immigrants, he or she will be labelled far-right immediately. Police action and the wrath of the law will follow. On the other hand, if someone is anti-Israel or pro-Shariat, no one is going to label him or her far-left. The rhetoric is no different from what we see in general India. Anyone supporting the idea of Hindu Rashtra gets labelled as a “Hindu extremist” immediately but the media, left-liberals and their ilks find ways to “humanise” even the most dangerous terrorists.

BBC removes 2018 promotional video featuring Axel Rudakubana who stabbed 3 girls to death in Southport

Amidst backlash, the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, deleted a 2018 Children in Need promotional video from its websites when it was revealed that the video featured the teenager accused of murdering three girls in Southport. The accused teenager who appeared in BBC’s promo video has been identified as Axel Rudakubana.

In a now-deleted charity promotional video from 2018, Axel Rudakubana is shown leaving the Tardis dressed as Doctor Who, sporting a trench coat and tie that resembled Doctor Who’s star, David Tennant.

Axel Rudakubana, then 11, reminds viewers in the video, “It’s that time of year again”, before offering tips on how to best raise money.

In a statement, BBC Children in Need spokesperson said, “Our deepest sympathies go out to everyone impacted by this shocking case and we have removed the video from all of our platforms out of respect to them.”

He was chosen for the video via a casting agency and had no involvement with any Children In Need projects.

As reported earlier, Axel Kudakubana appeared in Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday, accused of the murders of Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven. He is also accused of attempting to murder yoga instructor Leanne Lucas, businessman John Hayes, and eight youngsters who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

The suspect is a minor and generally, names of minor suspects are not released to the public in the UK. However, Judge Andrew Menary took an exception and let the suspect be identified as Axel Rudakubana, a resident of Wales born to Rwandan parents, to stop the spread of misinformation.

The anti-quota protest in Bangladesh, which culminated in anti-government agitation, is now taking a drastic turn.

Hindu minorities are being selectively targeted by Islamists under the garb of civil disobedience and non-cooperation with the Sheikh Hasina government.

On Sunday (4th August) noon, the ‘protestors’ laid siege on the Rayganj Press Club in Sirajganj and brutally attacked a Hindu journalist named Pradip Kimar Bhowmik.

Following the assault, the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital. The Hindu journalist was declared dead on arrival. Pradip Kumar Bhowmik was the Rayganj correspondent of Daily Khoborpatra.

On Sunday (4th August), the Islamists killed a Hindu politician named Haradhan Roy. He was the councillor of Ward 4 in Rangpur city. Roy’s nephew was also lynched by Islamists.

Another Hindu councillor named Kajal Roy was also murdered under the pretext of anti-government protests.

12 Bangladeshi infiltrators, including 3 women, arrested in Tripura, booked under Foreigners Act and Passport Act

On Sunday, 4th August, 12 Bangladeshi infiltrators, including three women, were arrested from the West Tripura district for illegal entry into India. The accused persons are said to have been arrested near the international border in the Lankamura and Shanmura areas on the outskirts of the state capital. 

“We are interrogating the detainees. We have booked a case under the Foreigners Act and the Passport Act. We produced them in the court today and sought their police remand,” S K Bardhan, inspector of the West Agartala police station was quoted as saying.

The accused individuals after the arrest claimed that they were trying to return to Bangladesh.

This comes just days after 4 Bangladeshi infiltrators were arrested from Kolkata. The West Bengal Police arrested the individuals on 22nd July after they failed to provide valid identity documents. “They could not provide valid identity documents and confessed to being Bangladeshi nationals who entered India illegally. They stayed at a rented accommodation in Narendrapur police station area,” Anandapur police was quoted as saying as they launched an investigation into the case.

Earlier on 30th June, eleven Bangladeshi infiltrators were arrested from Agartala railway station for entering the country without any valid travel document. They had crossed the international border through Tripura’s Sepahijala district and had trains to board to various parts of the country from Agartala. The police had suspected human trafficking angle as well.

Reports suggest that the Government train Police have apprehended more than 200 Bangladeshi nationals and 32 Rohingyas this year. These arrests have been made mostly by the Border Security Force, police, and other agencies at the Agartala train station, Chandrapur Inter-State Bus Terminus, Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport, and other locations throughout Tripura.

With the increase in foreign infiltration, Chief Minister Manik Saha interacted with top BSF commanders in July. The BSF has held several talks with the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) at the commander and outpost levels.

On the night of Sunday, 4th August, nine Kanwariyas suffered fatal injuries in a horrific accident after the DJ vehicle they were riding on struck a high-voltage cable. The incident occurred in Sultanpur village, which is in the industrial police station area of Bihar’s Hajipur.

More than six persons had been burned in the accident, with one in critical condition. The incident occurred while the Kanwariyas rode a DJ trolley to perform Jalabhishek at Sonepur’s Baba Hariharnath Temple, as confirmed by the witnesses.

According to reports, the tragic accident occurred late at night, when the carriage in which the Kanwariyas were traveling struck a high-voltage cable line in Sultanpur village. The deaths include one minor. The other eight have been identified as Ravi Kumar, Raja Kumar, Naveen Kumar, Amresh Kumar, Ashok, Chandan, Kalu and Ashish Kumar.

All of the Kanwariyas were on their way to Sonepur to carry out Jalabhishek at the Baba Hariharnath Temple after stocking up with Ganga water in Pahleja. Eight individuals died on the spot, while another died from injuries sustained during treatment. One injured person is in serious condition and receiving treatment at Hajipur Sadar Hospital.

Meanwhile, as per the reports, four additional injured patients continue to receive care at a local private nursing home. Sadar SDPO Omprakash commented on the issue and stated that the deaths happened as the DJ vehicle crashed the 11,000 high-volt wire.

“Nine pilgrims (Kanwariyas) died and three sustained severe injuries when a high tension overhead wire fell on their vehicle in Sultanpur village under the jurisdiction of Industrial police station in Vaishali district. The incident took place in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday when the Kanwariyas were going to Baba Harihar Nath Temple in Sonepur to perform Jalabhishekh,” Rambabu Baitha, Sub-divisional Officer of Hajipur-Sadar further confirmed.

The injured people have been admitted to a hospital, and their condition is said to be stable. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and the case is being probed.

In Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri, a Hindu girl allegedly committed suicide on 29th July, after a Muslim youth identified as Mohammed Wasif Ansari threatened an acid attack if she refused to convert to Islam. The incident unfolded in Kuravali Police Station precinct wherein a B.sc student hanged herself after getting frustrated with the constant harassment and threats by accused Wasif. On Saturday, 3rd August, Mainpuri Police arrested the accused after registering a case against him on the complaint filed by the deceased victim’s father.

The accused Muslim youth was pressuring the victim to convert to Islam and perform Nikah with him. Reports say that Wasif was threatening the victim to make her obscene video viral on social media. On 29th July, Wasif threatened to throw acid on the Hindu’s girl face if she refused to convert to Islam and do Nikah with him. The deceased victim’s father said that he works as a driver in Delhi and his daughter was doing B.sc in Mainpuri.

In his complaint, the deceased victim’s father said that Wasif Ansari, son of Aslam Ansari, a resident of Gharnajpur locality was harassing his daughter to convert to Islam and marry him. He said that the accused Muslim youth used to visit their house and claimed that he had made an obscene video of the victim and would circulate it on social media if does not accept his demands. The victim had told her family about Wasif’s activities, however, due to the fear of defamation, the victim’s father did not approach the local police.

The victim’s father complained to Wasif’s father Aslam and brother Salim about the matter, however, they abused him and said that Wasif’s nikah would happen only with the Hindu victim.

On 29th July, a sacred and frustrated victim committed suicide after Wasif said that either she would marry him on the same day or he would make her obscene video viral on social media and hurl acid on her face.

Taking to X, Mainpuri SP Vinod Kumar informed about the incident and said, “In the Kuravali area, a girl committed suicide at her home. In this case, the deceased victim’s father has alleged that one Wasif, who resided in the same locality, was harassing her and pressuring her to marry him. Due to this stress, the girl committed suicide. On the complaint lodged by the victim’s father, a case has been registered under relevant sections of BNS. The accused has been arrested and sent to jail. The cause of death has been identified as hanging. Necessary action is being taken in the matter.”

Death toll rises to 100 in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina imposes nationwide curfew, Indian govt issues urgent travel advisory

The clashes between the police, Awami League supporters and protestors, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, have left at least 100 people dead in Bangladesh since Sunday (4th August).

Among the deceased are 14 police officials. The ongoing violence in the country has forced the Interior Ministry to declare a nationwide curfew and control the law and order. The government has also declared a holiday between 5th and 7th August to pacify the situation.

It must be mentioned that the protests began as part of anti-quota agitation in June but have now metamorphosed into an anti-government demonstration. The renewed agitation seeks justice for the 200 people who were killed during the initial phase of the protests.

Anti-govt protests to continue on Monday

However, there seems to be no cessation of violence in sight when one of the protest organisers Asif Mahmud, heading the ‘Student Movements Against Discrimination’ appealed to protestors to march in Dhaka on Monday (5th August).

“I call upon the students and people of the whole country to leave for Dhaka tomorrow,” he emphasised.

Govt intervention and demands by ex-Army general

Amid demands for the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, the Bangladeshi Prime Minister had called for an intense crackdown on the demonstrators.

“I appeal to the countrymen to suppress these terrorists with a firm hand,” she declared. Anisul Haq, the country’s law minister, emphasised that the law enforcement authorities had shown restraint and credited them for avoiding a bloodbath.

The government has shut down Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram in the country. Mobile data operators were also directed to cut off 4G internet.

On Sunday, ex-military generals of Bangladesh urged Sheikh Hasina to withdraw armed forces from the streets and send them to barracks.

Former army chief Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan remarked, “We urge the government to undertake political initiatives to resolve the ongoing crisis. Do not destroy the good standing of our armed forces by keeping them engaged in a disgraceful campaign.”

He further added, “The Bangladeshi armed forces have never faced off with the masses or trained their guns at the chests of their fellow citizens.”

Travel advisory by Indian MEA

On Sunday (4th August) night, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued an urgent travel advisory for Indian nationals planning to travel to Bangladesh.

It urged Indians residing in the neighbouring country to exercise urgent caution.

“All Indian nationals presently in Bangladesh are advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements and remain in contact with the High Commission of India in Dhaka,” it emphasised.

On 4th August, Ayodhya Police debunked false claims of “Hindu man had affair with the victim” by supporters of SP MP Awadhesh Prasad. In a post replying to former State Minister from Azamgarh and Samajwadi Party leader IP Singh, Ayodhya police said, “In the above case, based on the complaint received, a case was registered and both the named accused Moeed Khan and Raju Khan were arrested and sent to judicial custody. Further legal proceedings are underway based on scientific evidence collection.” Reply from the police came after IP Singh made false claims that the accused Raju was a “Hindu” and had a “love affair” with the victim.

In a post on X, IP Singh added a video of Moeed Khan’s family members stating to the media. He wrote, “Why we all insisting that a DNA test be conducted is because Raju had a love affair with that girl and Raju is a Hindu. [He] used to work at the bakery [owned by Moeed Khan]. BJP leaders forcefully dragged the 72-year-old bakery owner into this case because he was a Muslim. Today, the Yogi government is playing politics on a false fabricated case. The Honourable High Court should take cognisance of this and the security of the girl should be increased. She should be shifted to AIIMS.”

In the video, the family members of Moeed Khan claimed that no one came to listen to their side. A lady in Hijab said, “It is being said that the girl had an affair with Raju. He is 20 years old. I gave birth to two children. I became a mother [for the first time] at the age of 16. If the girl was pregnant for two months, how did her mother not find out?” She further claimed that Raju told police that Moeed has no role in the matter but no one is listening to him. She further accused the girl’s family of lying under the influence of money and politics. Another family member said the politics was happening because the family is linked to the Samajwadi Party as Moeed Khan was made city head a year ago. Notably, in the video the family members neither used the full name of Raju nor directly asserted that he was a Hindu.
