In Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, a 60-year-old Maulvi reportedly attempted to rape an 8-year-old girl. The police are reported to have arrested the accused, Mohammad Ismail, and sent him to jail on Monday (23rd March). The accused has been booked under the POCSO Act. The matter came to light after CCTV footage of the incident emerged.
According to the victim’s father, the minor girl was playing outside on Sunday evening (22nd March), when a neighbour, Maulana Ismail, took her to his house on the pretext of giving her chocolates. There, he tried to strip and rape the girl. The victim somehow pushed him away, screaming, and ran away, narrating her ordeal to her family.
Upon hearing the girl’s screams, locals gathered and caught the fleeing accused. Enraged, the accused was dragged for about 50 meters along the road and brutally thrashed by the people.
Soon after, police arrived on the spot, rescued the accused from the mob and took him into custody. The accused is originally from Kanpur Dehat.
