At least 50 people lost their lives and 60 others were injured when a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit near the Tibet-Nepal border on Tuesday morning, according to China’s state media via AFP.
According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, China’s earthquake monitoring agency reported the quake’s magnitude as 7.1, with the epicentral region located at an altitude of approximately 4,200 meters (13,800 feet).
The quake, reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS), struck at 6:35 am IST, with its epicentre located in the Tibet region, approximately 93 km northeast of Lobuche, Nepal.
The earthquake, originating at a depth of 10 kilometres, also triggered tremors across Bihar and various parts of northern India. Lobuche, situated near Nepal’s Khumbu Glacier, is about 150 kilometres east of Kathmandu and near the Everest Base Camp.
Additionally, data from the National Center for Seismology (NCS) recorded two more quakes in the region later that morning. A 4.7-magnitude tremor was detected at 7:02 AM IST, with its epicentre at latitude 28.60°N and longitude 87.68°E, at a depth of 10 kilometres. Another quake, measuring 4.9 in magnitude, followed at 7:07 AM IST, with an epicentre at latitude 28.68°N and longitude 87.54°E, occurring at a depth of 30 kilometres.
