Assam govt announces ‘Mission 2 Lakh Govt Jobs’, creates task force to prepare roadmap, first Himanta govt gave over 1.64 lakh jobs against poll promise of 1 lakh

The Assam government has announced ‘Mission 2 Lakh Govt Jobs’, a major initiative aimed at creating two lakh government jobs for the state’s unemployed youths across various departments, autonomous bodies, semi-government organisations, missions, and societies in the coming five years.

In the first cabinet meeting of the Himanta Biswa Sarma government, a task force headed by the Chief Secretary was constituted to examine all aspects and submit a comprehensive report within three months.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has emphasised that there is no time to rest in fulfilling promises to the people. His team has already begun identifying vacancies, preparing a detailed roadmap, mapping departments and institutions, and setting timelines to deliver on this commitment. The initiative forms part of the electoral promises outlined in the Sankalp Patra.

CM Sarma posted on X, “There’s no time to rest in our quest to deliver on our promises. My team is already at work to identify vacancies, create the roadmap, map out departments and bodies and chalk out the time frame to deliver on the commitment of 2 lakh Govt jobs.”

A review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota on May 27 focused on vacancy mapping, assessing impending retirements, streamlining recruitment processes, improving manpower in remote areas, and setting annual targets with a robust monitoring mechanism.

During the meeting, discussions were held on mapping existing and anticipated vacancies across departments, field offices, autonomous bodies, colleges, universities, missions and societies. The meeting also discussed various aspects of govt job vacancies like assessment of year-wise retirement projections and grade-wise vacancies in field offices, identification of direct recruitment vacancies across departments, rationalisation and streamlining of recruitment processes to ensure transparency and timely appointments, and measures to improve manpower availability in remote and difficult areas through suitable policy interventions and incentives.

The task force is expected to submit its report soon, paving the way for phased implementation with clear annual projections.

The mission also complements efforts to promote self-employment and entrepreneurship through schemes such as the Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan (CMAAA) and other similar programs, aiming not only at direct recruitment but also at making lakhs of young people skilled and self-reliant.

This announcement builds on the BJP government’s strong track record on employment. Ahead of the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, the party had promised one lakh government jobs. Under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, the government not only fulfilled this pledge but significantly exceeded it, providing over 1.64 lakh jobs through ADRE and departmental recruitments by the time of the 2026 elections.

Notably, these appointments were carried out with complete transparency and on merit, with no reported cases of corruption or litigation, marking a notable departure from past practices. During the Congress regime, most govt recruitments were stalled in litigation as deserving candidates who didn’t receive jobs moved to the courts. After the BJP came to power, several govt employees, including many ACS officers, were fired after it was found that they got the jobs against bribes and other unfair means.

The fresh mandate received by the BJP-led alliance in the April 2026 Assembly polls has further strengthened the resolve of the Himanta Biswa Sarma government to accelerate employment generation. Alongside government jobs, the broader vision includes fostering an ecosystem where youths become job creators, with each empowered entrepreneur potentially generating opportunities for several others.

Moreover, expanding private investment in the state is also anticipated to generate a large number of private sector jobs in the state. Several large projects started during the last government will be completed during this govt’s tenure, generating jobs for local youths.
