Delhi: BJP govt to upgrade 376 ICT labs, establish 31 new digital labs in government schools

In a major push to improve digital learning in government schools, the Delhi government has planned to upgrade hundreds of existing computer labs and set up new ones under the Samagra Shiksha programme for the year 2025-26.

Focus on digital classrooms

According to an official circular, the Project Approval Board (PAB) for 2025-26 under the Ministry of Education has approved the upgrade of 376 existing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) labs in secondary schools. This step is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of education through digital tools and better infrastructure.

New labs in high-enrolment schools

Along with upgrading old facilities, the government will also set up 24 new ICT labs in schools where student strength is more than 700 at the secondary and senior secondary levels. These approvals came under the supplementary PAB meeting linked to the Annual Work Plan and Budget (AWPB) 2025-26.

In addition, seven schools have been selected to receive advanced digital hardware and software (Type-I) support. With this, the total number of new digital interventions planned across schools rises to 31.

District-wise distribution

The allocation has been planned across districts, with North East II getting the highest number of new ICT labs a total of seven schools. The aim is to ensure that students across regions get equal access to modern learning facilities.

Why ICT labs matter

Officials highlighted that ICT labs are important not just for basic computer learning but also for improving understanding of different subjects. These labs help students access global educational content, think more clearly, and solve problems better.

They also make teaching easier by giving teachers better tools and help schools manage administrative work more smoothly. Overall, the initiative is expected to prepare students for future careers in a more practical way.

Separate budget push for computer labs

Apart from this plan, the Delhi government has also announced Rs 50 crore in the 2025-26 budget to set up 175 new computer labs in government schools. These labs will follow the standards set by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), further strengthening digital education in the capital.

With these steps, the government wants to make sure that students in government schools are not left behind and can study using modern technology, just like private school students. The focus remains on making classrooms more inclusive, efficient, and future-ready.
