A mass shooting incident in Missaukee County, northern Michigan, in the United States, left six people dead, including the shooter, and one critically injured, as confirmed by the Michigan State Police on Friday (14th August).
Reports quoting MSP Lt. Ashley Miller, a Michigan state police spokesperson, stated that a call was received by 911 dispatchers reporting a shooting at around 11:40 a.m. Friday (local time), near Lake City, northeast of Cadillac. After arriving on the scene, the police found three people dead and a fourth person critically wounded. The injured person was taken to a nearby medical facility.
The shooter was identified as 39-year-old Chad Hickman, and a manhunt was launched to trace him. Hickman was said to be driving a white pickup truck. The police tracked his vehicle to a wooded area, where he and another individual were found dead. “This situation is heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved. We remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates as new information becomes available,” said Miller. An investigation is being conducted by the state police into the incident.
Reports citing court records said that Hickman got divorced in 2025. The judge hearing his divorce case reportedly remarked that it was “uncontested” that the marriage had allegations of domestic violence on both sides that were “at the heart of the issues before the court.” A year before that, in 2024, Hickman was reportedly convicted of misdemeanour fourth-degree child abuse and contributing to delinquency of children in connection with a 2010 criminal case, according to 28th Circuit Court records.
He had also been sentenced to more than a year in county jail after pleading guilty in 2024 to two misdemeanours. He was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a child and child abuse in the fourth degree. He was sentenced to 365 days in jail and ordered to pay $1,775 in costs and fees from his conviction.
