MEA issues statement after ITBP confirms face-off with China along border areas: Here is what it said

India on Friday, October 23, said that peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China is affected whenever Chinese troops move away from their established patrolling patterns. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border is important for the overall development of relations between the two countries.

Jaiswal made the statement during a regular media briefing, a day after Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Kapur confirmed that face-offs with Chinese forces had taken place at several locations along the border in Arunachal Pradesh in recent days.

India and China using diplomatic and military channels

Explaining India’s position, Jaiswal said, “The situation in the India-China border areas gets disturbed from time to time when Chinese forces diverge from established patrolling patterns.”

He added that both countries are continuing to use existing diplomatic and military mechanisms to resolve pending border issues and prevent misunderstandings or miscalculations along the LAC.

“Both sides continue to use existing diplomatic and military mechanisms to resolve outstanding issues and avoid misunderstanding and miscalculation along the Line of Actual Control,” Jaiswal said.

Both sides agree to improve understanding of the LAC

The MEA spokesperson also said that India and China have agreed to discuss ways to improve their understanding of the LAC in certain areas. The discussions are aimed at improving border management and reducing the chances of disagreements between the two sides.

“The two sides have also agreed to discuss ways to improve understanding of the LAC in appropriate areas for better border management,” Jaiswal stated.

Peace along the border remains important

Reiterating India’s position, Jaiswal stressed that maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border is necessary for better relations between India and China.

“The maintenance of peace and tranquillity in the border areas is essential for the overall development of bilateral relations,” he said.

India has consistently maintained that peace and stability along the LAC are important for improving bilateral ties, while both countries continue to work through diplomatic and military channels to resolve outstanding border issues.
