On 18th March (Wednesday), a minor vehicle accident took a communal turn when a group of Muslims attacked Hindus in the Juhi Lal Colony area in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The aggressors, who were travelling in a car, identified two young men on a scooter by their religious symbols (a Kalava and a Kara) and targeted them. The brutal assault left the victims bleeding profusely.
The police responded swiftly and apprehended the main perpetrators, Shamshad and Sartaj, while a search is ongoing for Naushad and a female accomplice. Rahul Sharma revealed that his scooter was involved in a collision with a car near Vishwas Garden during the late evening. The occupants of the vehicle, Shamshad, Naushad and Sartaj, stepped out and reportedly spotted the Kalava and Kara on the wrists of the young men. The accused then threatened, “This is not Uttam Nagar in Delhi, this is Kanpur. You are Hindus. Beat them up.”
The assailants used sticks, clubs, bricks and stones to thrash the Hindu pair, after which one of them, Akash, started to bleed from his eyes and nose. Tension seized the locality after a video of the incident became viral; however, police units arrived at the location and successfully regained control of the situation. DCP (South) Dipendra Nath Chaudhary reported that a case has been registered under strict sections of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) and two culprits have been sent to prison. Moreover, raids are actively being conducted to capture the other absconding persons.
