On 4th March (Wednesday), Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence stated that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) air defence systems destroyed a ballistic missile fired from Iran that was headed for Turkish airspace after crossing over Syria and Iraq.
An official statement read, “A ballistic missile, launched from Iran and detected heading towards Turkish airspace after crossing Iraqi and Syrian airspace, was timely engaged and neutralized by NATO air and missile defence elements deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

The release added that the ordnance, which had dropped in the Hatay province’s Dortyol region, was part of an air defence munition that intercepted the aerial threat. The incident resulted in no wounds or casualties.
It further conveyed, “Our resolve and capacity to ensure the security of our country and citizens are at the highest level. While Turkiye supports regional stability and peace, it is capable of ensuring the security of its territory and citizens, regardless of who or where the threat comes from.”
NATO has condemned the incident. A statement issued by NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said, “We condemn Iran’s targeting of Turkiye. NATO stands firmly with all Allies, including Turkiye, as Iran continues its indiscriminate attacks across the region. Our deterrence and defence posture remains strong across all domains, including when it comes to air and missile defence.”
This incident adds another dimension to the already complex situation in the Middle East, where the Arabian Muslim nations are on the same side as Israel against Iran. While Turkey is a member of NATO, it is also a staunch supporter of Hamas. There is a US military base in Turkey, but the Turkish government has said that it would not allow its airspace to be used for attacks on Iran.
An Iranian attack on Turkey will mean a major escalation of the conflict and may force Turkey to allow the use of the US air force base in its territory to be used against Iran.
The country asserted that it will take every step required to protect its airspace and territory without any reservation or delay. “We remind you that we reserve the right to respond to any hostile attitude towards our country. We warn all parties to refrain from actions that would further spread the conflict in the region. In this context, we will continue to consult with NATO and our other allies,” it informed.
