A local court in Sambhal has scheduled March 5 as the next hearing date in a case related to the Shahi Jama Masjid and its survey in Chandausi.
The development came weeks after violence swept Sambhal when rioters masquerading as demonstrators protested against the court-mandated survey of the mosque. At least 5 Muslim youth were killed in the melee.
Meanwhile, the Allahabad High Court today halted proceedings in the Sambhal trial court until February 25 in a case alleging that Chandausi’s Shahi Jama Mosque was constructed by demolishing a Hindu temple.
Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal issued the order in response to a civil revision petition filed by the Shahi Jama Mosque Committee of Chandausi, challenging the trial court’s November 19 decision to appoint an Advocate Commissioner to survey the mosque as part of the suit claiming the mosque’s construction followed the destruction of a temple.
On 24th November 2024, violence broke out in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, when a team of local authorities went to Jama Masjid to conduct the second round of a court-ordered survey. The mob set several vehicles ablaze and opened fire at the police using locally made guns. More than 20 police personnel were injured, and at least four mobsters were killed.
