Suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir has officially launched his new political party, named Janata Unnayan Party (JUP), on December 22, 2025.
At a public meeting in Beldanga, Murshidabad district in Bengal, Kabir unveiled the party’s flag and announced plans to contest the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. He stated that he is aiming to field candidates in up to 200 seats and position himself as a potential ‘kingmaker’.

He has named his party as ‘Janta Unnayan Party’. Will field candidates- in each assembly seats of #WestBengal in the ensuing assembly polls.

The launch follows his suspension from TMC earlier this month following his controversial decision to lay the foundation stone for a ‘Babri Masjid’ in Murshidabad on December 11.
Kabir’s proposal of an alliance was rejected by AIMIM earlier this month.
Kabir has criticised TMC leadership, particularly Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and expressed intent to focus on issues affecting common people and marginalised communities, while being open to alliances with opposition groups. As per reports, Kabir himself wants to contest from the Rejinagar and Beldanga assembly seats.
Humayun Kabir’s political impact has been termed as ‘insignificant’ by the ruling TMC, while the BJP has accused him of indirectly helping Mamata’s party.
