Ahead of Bakri Eid, a 54-year-old Muslim man named Zafar Ali Sheikh committed suicide on Friday (22nd May) after being denied permission by his wife to sacrifice animals during the annual Islamic event. The incident occurred in Kalna town in the Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal.
According to a report by Sangbad Pratidin, Sheikh was an e-rickshaw driver by occupation. He had purchased a goat from the market for the purpose of killing it during Eid. Owing to new restrictions on animal slaughter in the State, Sheikh’s wife had objected to ‘sacrificing’ animals during Bakri Eid this year.
This led to a heated argument between the two. Thereafter, Zafar Ali Sheikh locked himself inside his room and committed suicide by hanging from a rope. He was later rushed to a local hospital, where the doctors declared him dead on arrival.
While speaking about the incident, Zafar’s son, Badsha, said, “The family was a little scared that cows couldn’t be slaughtered this year during Eid. My mother did not want to make any animal sacrifice. Since animals are killed each year, my father decided to buy a goat instead this time. This led to a heated argument. My father locked himself inside the house and took his life.”
