The finance ministry said that during Income tax survey at BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai, several discrepancies were found

Three-day-long survey by the Income Tax department at BBC offices at Delhi and Mumbai ended on Thursday night

BBC was accused of engaging in industrial level tax avoidance by employing people through personal service firms instead of direct recruitment

Sources said the above exercise, conducted by the tax authorities, is called "survey", not search or raid as per the provisions of the Income Tax Act. Such surveys are routinely conducted and are not to be confused to be in the nature of a search/raid, said sources. 

Several opposition leaders and 'liberals' attacked the Centre for the IT survey at BBC office over alleged tax irregularities.

Every household with a TV playing live programmes is obligated to pay the 'fee' regardless of whether it avails BBC services or not.

Editors Guild of India issued a press release expressing "deep concerns" over the It survey conducted at the BBC headquarter in Delhi

Meanwhile, earlier today Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the government is after the BBC instead of accepting an Opposition demand on a Joint Parliamentary Committee on Adani-Hindenburg matter.

The Income Tax Department is carrying out survey at the BBC office, which is a UK state sponsored media house, in Delhi.
