POCSO Act

On Monday, the civil society members across the country, especially in Kerala, had expressed massive outrage against the Kerala government following the acquittal of all four accused in the 2017 rape and death case of two minor Dalit girls in Walayar in Palakkad district. 

This is the fourth death penalty awarded in Odisha after the central government amended the POCSO Act to include the death penalty for rapists of children under 12 years.

Yusuf, who used to be the cleric in the Madarsa in the victim's village, allegedly kidnapped the minor girl and raped her multiple times in a guestroom of a mosque in Hyderabad.

The Catholic Church is against the death penalty for any crimes, Bishop Jose Chittooparampil said.

The amendments to the POCSO Act also seek to curb child pornography by imposing fine and providing imprisonment.

Police have stated that tension spread in the area after social media circulations of a communal angle being involved in the case. Internet services have been suspended in 13 police districts.

The accused Maulvi had gone into hiding after his actions became public. However, the police were able to nab him by tracking his location through his phone.
