Following a Supreme Court order, the Modi government has directed central ministries to clear stray dogs from educational campuses, hospitals, and transit hubs.

"The school gate was open, and the stray dog entered when the boy had gone to drink water and ran towards the gate," an official stated.

The Gujarat government will establish Animal Birth Control centres across all municipalities to manage the stray dog population. Supported by a ₹70 crore budget, the plan expands sterilization facilities from eight corporations to a statewide network, starting with 33 centres in the first phase.

Amicus curiae Gaurav Agarwal presented state wise data exposing gaps in shelters, fencing and sterilisation capacity. The Bench warned states against filing vague affidavits and indicated strong strictures for continued non compliance.

Notably, the Supreme Court bench was monitoring compliance with its November 2025 order, which mandated local authorities to remove stray dogs from railway stations, bus stands, hospitals, schools, and other public institutions.
