In 1976, the Hindu community in Sambhal were targeted after false rumours of their involvement in the murder of a Muslim cleric killed by one his coreligionist.

Earlier last week, a Shiva-Hanuman Temple in Sambhal was discovered during an anti-encroachment drive. The temple was closed since 1978.

Reports say that this ancient Radha-Krishna Temple was surrounded by Hindu families who had migrated away. The police received information about this abandoned temple and then arrived at the spot and reopened it. The police, however, did not find any signs of illegal encroachment.

On the 16th of December,  journalist Swati Goel Sharma published a thread on X, wherein she divulged the findings of her ground investigation from the Sewa Nagar colony in Ghaziabad. In a video shared by Sharma, one of the accused Ravi was seen trying to defend himself by saying his government document is proof that he is still a Hindu and was not involved in conversion activities.
