A proposal for the construction of a slaughterhouse in Ahmedabad was rolled back on Thursday (5th February) after strong opposition from former city mayor and BJP MLA from Ellisbridge Amit Shah. The proposal was part of the draft budget of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for 2026-27.
Municipal Commissioner Banchanidhi Pani had presented the draft budget to the Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani, containing the proposal for the slaughterhouse in the Shahwadi-Behrampura area of the city’s southern zone. A cost of ₹32 crore was estimated for the construction of the slaughterhouse, and land measuring 15,882.13 square meters had been allocated for it.
However, as soon as the proposal received major backlash on social media. Subsequently, MLA Amit Shah objected to the slaughterhouse.

OpIndian spoke to Amit Shah about the matter, and he said, “The slaughterhouse project is contrary to the BJP’s ideology. However, the municipal commissioner had proposed it in the budget. We then brought this matter to the attention of the top leadership, and they asked the commissioner to withdraw the decision. Ultimately, the proposal was withdrawn. I express my gratitude to Chief Minister Bhupendra Bhai, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Bhai, and State President Jagdish Bhai Vishwakarma for this.”
OpIndia attempted to contact the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation for more information, but they could not be reached. The report will be updated as soon as a response is received.
