The police in Bihar’s Saran district issued a press release on Saturday (14th March), providing an update on the investigation into the death of a Class 10 student. According to the press release shared by the Saran Police, investigators found that the girl had been missing for about 30 minutes before she was later discovered in a water-filled pit. During the investigation, suspicion fell on a local youth, who was then detained and questioned by the police.

The accused has been identified as Yuvraj Kumar, son of Rajkishor Manjhi, also known as Kamal Manjhi, a resident of Shitalpur village under the Amnaur Police Station area.
During interrogation, the accused admitted that he was present at the scene of the incident and stated that he and the deceased were residents of the same village. He further said that they used to communicate through Instagram and had known each other for some time. On the day of the incident, as well, the two had spoken to each other in the afternoon
The post-mortem examination was conducted at Sadar Hospital in Chhapra on 14th March. According to the report, the cause of death has been listed as asphyxia due to drowning. However, injuries were found on the body. Vaginal swab samples were also taken.
The police added that several other samples, including vaginal swabs, pubic hair, blood, fingernail samples and clothing, have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for further examination.
In the statement, the Superintendent of Police did not explicitly deny the possibility of rape.
Background of the case
The incident came to light earlier this week, on Wednesday, 11th March, in Pattishital village of Saran district in Bihar and has sparked widespread discussion. The victim’s mother has said that five youths from the village gang-raped her daughter and then threw her into a well, causing her death. In her complaint, she named Sachin Kumar Manjhi, Yuvraj Manjhi, Chandan Manjhi, Ajay Manjhi and Vikas Manjhi as the accused and claimed that one of them had earlier threatened the family. Based on the post-mortem report, Amnaur Police Station registered a case on Friday, 13th March, under sections 306/328/351(2)/61(2) of the BNS and sections 4/6/8 of the POCSO Act.
