Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam strongly condemned a recent incident of mob violence in Mumbai’s Islampura area, where a group of approximately 20 men reportedly attacked a group of young girls over a minor vehicular dispute.
Speaking to the media outside a police station, Nirupam expressed his dismay over the incident, particularly noting that it occurred during a holy month. While extending Eid greetings, he did not hold back in his criticism of the attackers’ actions.
“We extend our wishes to our Muslim brothers for Roza and Ramzan Eid, but it is deeply condemnable that in this sacred month, around 20 young girls were targeted over a trivial vehicular dispute,” Nirupam said.

The incident
According to Nirupam, the altercation began as a minor dispute over seating in a shared auto-rickshaw. The situation quickly escalated when a group of roughly 20 young men from Islampura allegedly surrounded and assaulted the young girls.
Nirupam characterised the attack as a form of mob lynching, questioning the masculinity of the attackers. “If you are truly men, why would 20 men gather to attack young girls?” he asked reporters.
Broader safety concerns raised
The Shiv Sena leader used the incident to highlight growing concerns about women’s safety in specific neighbourhoods. While acknowledging Mumbai’s general reputation as a city where women can walk safely even at 2:00 AM, he warned that areas like Islampura, Kurar, and Pathanwadi are becoming increasingly dangerous.
Nirupam also alleged that similar instances of harassment occurred around Eid in the past, claiming that in previous cases, local thugs had intimidated the police into dropping the charges. “This time, we will not let that happen,” he asserted.
Demand for accountability
Expressing frustration that no arrests have been made and the culprits remain at large, Nirupam stated that his visit to the police station was to ensure accountability. He demanded that law enforcement officials thoroughly review CCTV footage of the incident, identify each individual involved in the attack, and make immediate arrests and take strict legal action against the perpetrators.
Nirupam emphasised that swift police action is necessary to restore a sense of security and send a clear message throughout the Dindoshi area that the dignity and safety of women will be protected at all costs.
