The government of India is reportedly preparing to closely examine WhatsApp’s proposed username feature amid growing concerns over potential impersonation and its possible misuse for online fraud. Government sources have indicated that the Centre will scrutinise the legal aspects of the feature and explore mechanisms to block it if necessary. Should the feature be deemed risk-prone, authorities may also issue a legal notice to Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp.
The feature, which remains in the testing phase and has not been rolled out globally, is designed to let users create unique usernames. Once implemented, it would enable people to connect with others on the platform without having to share their phone numbers. WhatsApp has described the move as an effort to give users an additional layer of privacy and greater convenience in making connections.
