In the egg-hurling incident during a Ganpati procession in the Mazgaon neighbourhood of South Mumbai on 23rd August, a 22-year-old delivery boy named Danish Sher Khan was arrested by the police.
Byculla police arrested the accused, who works as an online egg supplier, on Tuesday (25th August). His arrest came after an FIR was lodged at Byculla police station against unidentified persons following directions from the Mumbai Police Commissioner.
The incident happened when he entered a building on Rambhau Bhogle Marg in the Mazgaon area to deliver eggs. According to the police, the accused, Danish Sher Khan, hurled eggs at the Ganpati procession because he was furious after the smoke from firecrackers burnt during the procession allegedly irritated his eyes.
The smoke from the firecrackers angered Danish Sher Khan so much that he decided to avenge this by throwing eggs at the religious procession. He climbed up a nearby building and hurled eggs at the Hindu religious procession.
“On August 23, within the jurisdiction of Byculla Police Station, the arrival procession of the ‘Mazgaoncha Morya’ Ganpati Mandal was taking place. At around PM, an incident occurred where an unknown person threw an egg at the front of the procession. In connection with this incident, an FIR was registered at Byculla Police Station under Sections 299 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Considering the gravity of the matter, the police formed several teams and initiated a thorough investigation. According to a press release from the Byculla Police Station, dated 24th August, one of the eggs hurled by Khan at the procession hit the Ganpati murti. The incident caused widespread outrage among the Hindu devotees, who demanded swift and stringent action against the accused.
Five police teams were formed to nab the accused. The police launched a manhunt for the accused and examined all technical evidence to locate him. He was arrested within 36 hours of the incident.
Hindu religious incidents being targeted in this manner are not unusual. A similar incident happened last year in August when eggs were thrown at the murti of Lord Ganesha in Vadodara, Gujarat. The accused, identified as Sufyan Salim Mansuri, Shahnawaz Mohammad Irshad Qureshi and a minor, were arrested in connection with the case.
