A Hindu businessman, his wife and their two sons have gone missing from Chandpur district in Bangladesh, raising concerns among relatives, customers and members of the local Hindu community. Police have started looking into the case, but it is still unclear whether the family went into hiding because of financial troubles or disappeared under suspicious circumstances.

Pintu Das, who owned SK Shilpalay at Madina Market in Chandpur city, went missing along with his wife, Rimi Das, and their sons, Priyam Das and Rupam Das. Priyam is a Class 10 student, while reports said both sons are teenagers and students.
The family had reportedly been facing debt pressure
According to relatives, Pintu Das had been dealing with growing financial problems and debts. He was also said to have received threats from an individual in recent times.
Upoma Dey, a relative of Pintu Das and joint convener of the district Hindu Buddhist Christian Students’ Unity Council, said the family disappeared from their rented home in Chandpur town. She said they had heard that Pintu had been under pressure because of his debts and had also faced threats.
Local reports said Pintu was involved in a gold-filling and gold pawn business, where people pledged gold jewellery in return for money. Some residents claimed that he had borrowed money from several cooperative societies and other associations in the name of his business and was struggling with a serious financial crisis.
Customers say gold and money are still stuck
The disappearance has also worried several customers who had pledged their gold jewellery with Pintu Das.
Rasel Khan of Raghunathpur said he had pledged 29.16 grams of gold jewellery and received 50,000 Bangladeshi taka from Pintu. When Rasel later arranged the money to get his jewellery back, Pintu reportedly asked him to return the next day. By then, however, Rasel learned that Pintu and his family had gone missing. He later approached the police regarding his pledged gold.
Two other customers, Zahidul Islam and Shubhankar Majumder, also said they had pledged gold with Pintu. Zahidul said he had given 12 ana of gold, while Shubhankar said he had pledged 10 ana.
Business had shifted several times
Pintu Das had reportedly changed the location of his business several times before opening SK Shilpalay at Madina Market around five to six months ago. His ancestral home is in Fatikchhari in Chattogram. Reports also said some of his relatives live in Cumilla and Muradnagar.
Relatives and local community members have confirmed that Pintu, his wife Rimi, and their two sons were no longer at their rented house in Chandpur. The family went missing on 26th August.
Police begin search
Police said they were informed about the family’s disappearance only recently and have started looking into the matter.
The officer-in-charge of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station said necessary steps would be taken to trace the four family members and find out what happened to them.
The case has drawn further attention amid renewed concerns over the safety of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority community, especially after the recent killing of a retired Hindu schoolteacher and three members of his family in Rangpur.
However, in the Chandpur case, authorities have not yet confirmed whether the family’s disappearance is linked to threats, financial pressure or any other reason. Their whereabouts remain unknown, while relatives and customers continue to wait for answers, with money and pledged gold also at stake.
