Punjab: Man poses as ‘Jat Sikh’ to marry Hindu woman in Ludhiana, later forces her to convert to Christianity

A serious case of deception and forced religious conversion has come to light from Ludhiana, Punjab. A Hindu woman, Kritika Verma, has stated that her husband and in-laws hide their religious identity before marriage, and later they pressured her to convert to Christianity and harassed her physically and mentally over dowry. Following a complaint by her father, Vipan Kumar Verma, police have registered an FIR against her in-laws.

Husband introduced himself as a Jat Sikh

According to the complaint, Kritika married Karanveer on September 2, 2026, at Shani Shiv Mandir in Sant Vihar, Ludhiana, following Hindu rituals. Her father said that Karanveer had introduced himself to Kritika as Karanveer Singh Sidhu and claimed to be a Jat Sikh.

Kritika, who worked at an Apple Store, came into contact with Karanveer when he began visiting the store frequently. He later expressed his feelings for her, and their relationship eventually led to marriage. Kritika introduced him to her family, and both sides began making arrangements for the wedding.

However, according to her father’s complaint, Karanveer’s family did not attend the wedding. Only his elder brother was present, while Karanveer took part in the marriage ceremony.

Father-in-law demanded conversion to Christianity

After the wedding, Kritika stayed at her parents’ home for a few days. When she went to her matrimonial home on October 5, her father-in-law refused to accept the marriage and told her that she would have to convert to Christianity before the family would recognise the relationship.

Her father said that the house had a large hall on the ground floor designed like a church. Kritika initially refused to change her religion but later agreed because she feared that her marriage would break apart.

The complaint further states that her father-in-law took her to a swimming pool on the terrace and forced her to enter the water as part of the conversion process. The incident was also recorded on video. The complaint also mentions derogatory remarks about Hindu deities.

Kritika was later sent back to her parents’ home, with her in-laws promising that another wedding ceremony would take place according to their religious customs. Karanveer eventually brought her back, and the couple started living together.

₹10 lakh dowry demand and assault

Kritika’s father said that problems increased after the couple began living together. According to the complaint, her in-laws demanded ₹10 lakh along with other dowry items. When the family failed to provide the money, Kritika was thrown out of her matrimonial home.

She later rented a house in Joginder Nagar, Haibowal, where Karanveer would visit occasionally. During these visits, he physically assaulted her, her father stated.

The complaint also says that Vipan Kumar Verma faced an assault when he went to take his daughter home. Her family said that Kritika suffered both physical and mental harassment throughout the marriage.
