A Hindu school teacher named Manoranjan Roy was brutally beaten to death on Sunday (October 25, 2026) in the Dinajpur district of Bangladesh while trying to resolve a land dispute. A man named Asaduzzaman has been arrested in connection with the killing.
As per reports, the murder took place around 2:30 pm on Sunday in the Sonapukur Naya Mollapara area of Rabeya Bazar in Parbatipur upazila. The 55-year-old victim worked as an Assistant Teacher at East Sukhdevpur Government Primary School, Chirirbandar. He was killed while trying to mediate a land dispute between two neighbours. Reports quoting a press release by the district police media cell said that Manoranjan Roy died on the spot after sustaining injuries in various parts of his body in a fight over a land dispute on a residential road.
Reports give varied accounts of the dispute that led to the killing of Manoranjan Roy. According to reports, Roy was beaten to death during a mediation meeting called to resolve a dispute concerning a road between Asaduzzaman and his neighbour Al Roman. On the day of the incident, the two neighbours, including the accused Asaduzzaman, were quarreling. A meeting was called to resolve the dispute. Victim Manoranjan Roy, who was a respectable person in the area, was also present in the meeting to put an end to the dispute.
However, a heated altercation ensued between the parties during the mediation. Roy tried to intervene and pacify both sides to calm the situation. As Roy was trying to mediate, Asaduzzaman and his associates got enraged and began beating Manoranjan with sticks. The victim sustained serious injuries to his body, including to his head, and fell into a nearby paddy field. He died on the spot.
As per Prothom Alo, Manoranjan Roy was the friend of Al Roman’s father, Azizul Master, who passed away around 13 years ago. Roy acted as a father figure for Roman and his family since his father’s death. He looked after Roman and his family and even attended to his and his siblings’ needs, including their education.
Fortaz Hussain (53), a carpenter, was carrying out construction work at the home of Azizul Master. Hussain had a conflict with Al Roman regarding the payment for the work he did at the house. Separately, Al Roman was also involved in a dispute with his neighbor, Asaduzzaman, over a piece of land situated along the road next to his house. Al Roman reportedly alleged that some eucalyptus trees were cut down on the property, that he claimed, without seeking his permission. Hussain had taken the trees to a sawmill to have them processed. Later, Roman found some discrepancy in the quantity of the timber and the amount Hussain quoted to have received by selling it.
On Sunday afternoon, Fortaz Hussain went to Roman’s house accompanied by Asaduzzaman and a few others. A heated argument broke out between Hussain and Asaduzzaman and Roman’s family. On hearing the commotion, Manoranjan Roy went to intervene and pacify the situation. At that time, Hussain, Asaduzzaman, and their associates attacked Roy and beat him to death.
Al Roman informed the police about the incident. The police arrived at the spot and arrested Asaduzzaman. The search for others involved in the attack is on. “According to information received from locals, the teacher had gone from Chirirbandar to resolve a dispute involving his late friend’s family. During an altercation between the two parties, he sustained injuries and subsequently passed away. The exact cause of death is currently under investigation,” Dinajpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Anwar Hossain said.
