92-year-old Sr Adv Keshav Parasaran and other lawyers who represented Ram Lalla in SC get a hero’s welcome in Ayodhya

On Saturday, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad held a grand felicitation ceremony at Karsewakpuram in Ayodhya to honour 41 lawyers, including veteran Supreme Court lawyer Keshav Parasaran who represented Ram Lalla and the Hindu parties in Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case.

According to the reports, the event led by Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, head of the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Sadhvi Ritambhara was organised to felicitate lawyers who fought for the cause of Ram Mandir.

The celebratory event, a first by VHP after the November 9 Supreme Court verdict, saw some emotional scenes as VHP karyakartas and priests showed their respects to the 92-year-old lawyer Keshav Parasaran. VHP leader Sadhvi Ritambhara applied ’tilak’ on Keshav Parasaran, who had led the team of lawyers in the courtroom battle.

On the request of saints, Parasaran also recited a few verses from the Ramayan. Parasaran’s description of an impromptu dance by monkeys outside his Delhi home after verdict won the hearts of VHP activists and attendees.

Senior Supreme Court lawyers CS Vaidyanathan, additional solicitor general of the Government of India Vikramjeet Banerjee, lawyers PV Yogeswaran and Madan Mohan Pandey and former high court judge Kamleshwar Nath were also felicitated. The VHP also felicitated family members of karsevaks who died in police firing in Ayodhya on October 30, 1990.

Champat Rai, international vice president of the VHP, informed the gathering that Parasaran used to keep standing in court for four hours at a stretch during the hearing of the case in the last 40 days.

“Everyday, Parasaran ji would spend four-five hours in the court. He would stand as the case was of Lord Ram. These lawyers took off their shoes in the courtroom during the hearing, such was their respect for God,” said Ritambhara.

Ritambhara went to the makeshift temple at Ramjanbhamoomi and worshipped Ram Lalla. Earlier in the day, K Parasaran along with his family members, including son Mohan Parasaran, had paid obeisance to Ram Lalla at the makeshift Ram temple.

The VHP karyakartas cheered and raised Peaceful slogans of ‘Jai Siya Ram’ and ‘Jai Shri Ram’ as each lawyer was garlanded and gifted a framed photograph of the proposed Ram temple. Before leaving for the temple, Parasaran and his family members took a holy dip in the River Sarayu.

On November 9, in a historic judgement ending a dispute spanning centuries, the Supreme Court of India handed over the disputed Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri masjid land to the Hindu parties, making way for Hindu devotees to have a grand Ram Mandir at the birthplace of Lord Ram.

The Apex court also ordered the union government to provide 5 acres of land at an alternate site at a prominent location in Ayodhya to the Sunni Waqf Board to rebuild the Babri Masjid which was demolished in 1992.

Let there be floor test today, let BJP prove its majority: Congress leader Kapil Sibal appearing for Shiv Sena in Supreme Court

Senior Congress leader and senior advocate Kapil Sibal while appearing for Shiv Sena in the Supreme Court today said that the apex court should order floor test today itself and let the BJP prove its majority in the assembly. “If they don’t, let us stake the claim,” he said. Referring to Maharashtra governor’s move to invite the BJP to form government early morning on Saturday as ‘malafide’, Sibal said, “When somebody had announced at 7 pm that we are forming the government, the act of Governor is biased, malafide, contrary to all laws established by this Court.”

Sibal was appearing for Shiv Sena in the apex court on the joint plea filed by the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress against the Governor’s decision to invite Devendra Fadnavis to form government.

In a ruthless move, BJP and NCP leader, Ajit Pawar’ faction formed an alliance in the state of Maharashtra on Saturday morning. While people slept, Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the Chief Minister and Ajit Pawar was sworn in as the Deputy CM. The previous night, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had announced that Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had agreed to become the chief minister of Maharashtra. But before they could make the next move, the tables had turned and BJP had already formed the government when they slept.

The Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress filed a joint plea in the Supreme Court challenging the government formation in Maharashtra where Governor Koshyari invited Devendra Fadnavis to form the government.

Delay in decision making and insistence on ‘secularism’ cost Congress formation of government in Maharashtra

As the political drama has begun in the state of Maharashtra, the Congress party leadership has been under fire from political commentators and supporters for the deliberate delay and reluctance to decide on the government formation in Maharashtra.

Reportedly, the delay by the Congress party in giving a green signal to the Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP coalition seems to have given BJP all time to pull off a massive political coup. Apart from the internal rebellion that NCP was facing all along, the inefficiency in the Congress party to take swift and effective decisions seems to have hampered party’s chance to form the government in the state.

The reluctance on part of the Congress party to decide on the issue of government formation began after Sonia Gandhi expressed hesitation to join hands with Shiv Sena claiming that the ‘hardline Hindutva’ views of Sena were contradictory to Congress’s “secular values”. The discussions got held up after Sonia Gandhi got concerned about the impact of such a coalition on the party in other states. However, she was finally persuaded to change her mind by the position taken by state MLAs. There were rumours making rounds that the Congress lobby in Kerala wasn’t too happy with the ‘secular’ Congress joining hands with Shiv Sena.

It was this fear and doubt that protracted negotiations by Congress on forming the government with Shiv Sena. The Congress party from the start kept NCP in the front to talk to Shiv Sena because it did not want to be surprised and left stranded after siding with a ‘hardline Hindutva party’.

The talks formally began first between Congress and NCP and later with Sena. NCP leader Sharad Pawar had initially been quite non-committal on joining hands with Shiv Sena. The focus was on drafting a common minimum programme, with contentious issues like Sena’s demand for a Bharat Ratna for Savarkar being addressed. According to a senior Congress leader, Sonia Gandhi wanted all the issues resolved before formally agreeing to the alliance, including the CMP and the splitting of all posts and portfolios to avoid conflicts later.

Reportedly, Sharad Pawar, anticipating a political coup, had met Sonia Gandhi to discuss the possibility of such a move by the BJP. However, the doubts stayed. Incidentally, the Congress Working Committee discussed these apprehensions at their meeting on November 11 where everyone appeared ready but also suspicious of the Sharad Pawar.

Finally, the Congress party decided to hold talks with the NCP over a ‘common minimum programme’. The CWC met twice in the span of 15 days, which itself is no ordinary matter. The CWC had expressed many reservations on both occasions, on November 11 and November 21, regarding the final modalities of the coalition.

The Congress insisted on inserting “secularism” and “constitution” in the joint declaration of the NCP-Congress-Sena while announcing the coalition. The party even objected to the nomenclature of the alliance – ‘Maha Shiv Aghadi’ suggested by Sena, and they settled for ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’.

As per reports, it was only by November 20 that Congress agreed to be part of the alliance. Then, Congress insistence on the Speaker’s post led to further discussions. NCP and Congress took their own time to negotiate a sweet deal for themselves before zeroing in on Uddhav Thackeray for Chief Minister.

However, senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel has denied the allegations of Congress dragging its feet. “This is baseless. Sena’s proposal came to us on November 11 and we came to Mumbai the very next day. All our meetings were on schedule. Finalising coalitions take time.” As Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the CM of the state, Ahmed Patel said that the reason this has happened is not due to delays by Congress but because some people left NCP.

Maharashtra: Prof Zaheer Syed ‘went into a shock and fell sick’ after BJP forms government in state with Ajit Pawar’s support

It is not only the politicians who went into a tizzy after BJP sprung a surprise and formed a government early morning on Saturday, hours after Shiv Sena had announced Uddhav Thackeray will be the chief minister of Maharashtra. One professor Zaheer Syed, who teaches English at a college in Gadchandur, some 43 kms away from Chandrapur in Maharashtra, ‘fell sick’ after the unexpected twist in the Maharashtra political drama.

As reported by news agency PTI, after he woke up and saw the news that Devendra Fadnavis has sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Syed ‘went into a shock’ and ‘fell sick’. He then applied for leave in college but the same was rejected by college.

Maharashtra: Congress clueless on NCP support as the political drama in the state continues

A day after the BJP formed government in Maharashtra with support of NCP’s Ajit Pawar, Congress continues to be clueless about what is in store for it during the Supreme Court hearing later today. Following the midnight political coup in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress filed a joint plea in the Supreme Court challenging the government formation in Maharashtra where Governor Koshyari invited Devendra Fadnavis to form the government.

Even as the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the plea at 11:30 AM today, Congress has no clarity on the matter as of now.

As reported by Times Now, Congress leader Salman Khurshid said that there is no clarity on how the government was formed overnight and the swearing in happened at 8 AM. “That too when there were only 1-2 people from the press present at the swearing in. Why was this needed? Secondly, it is not yet clear how many NCP MLAs are supporting this (government). 8-10 people had gone. And they have come out and said that ‘we did not know where we were going.'” he said.

BJP has shown ruthlessness in the game of power politics, and it is good for ideology too

Most BJP supporters and sympathisers woke up early today to the news of Devendra Fadnavis taking oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the second time. They just couldn’t believe, like everyone else, the turn of events as everyone had gone to sleep last night thinking that the NCP-Congress-Shiv Sena alliance was sealed, and Uddhav Thackeray was set to become the new Chief Minister of the ‘opportunist’ post-poll alliance.

In the morning, BJP was reported to have formed an alliance in Maharashtra with the NCP, with Ajit Pawar taking oath as the Deputy Chief Minister. As I write this, it has become clear that it is not a BJP-NCP alliance. Only Ajit Pawar and a handful of other MLAs are backing BJP in Maharashtra, which might not be enough to get a majority (or might just be, one doesn’t know anymore), however, this article is about the opportunism.

While a bulk of BJP supporters were celebrating – primarily because of schadenfreude arising out of Shiv Sena being ‘shown the place’ – there were some who thought that it was an opportunist step taken by the BJP. That the party should not have done it after having earlier accused Shiv Sena of indulging in the same. BJP compromised ideology for power, they rued.

Read: President Rule revoked at 5.47 AM, Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar to prove majority by 30th November

The celebrating BJP supporters could say “we didn’t start the fire” but it can’t be denied that it was not only “opportunism”, but also a “compromise” to have allied with a person they accused of corruption and with a party that they accused of going slow on terrorism.

Let us accept the truth – it was pure power politics by the BJP in Maharashtra and the aim was to retain power in a crucial state.

And there is nothing wrong in it. You play to win. As simple as that. The only rule that should be followed is that you should not indulge in any illegal act. You should be like Australia and be ugly and unruly on the field to win the match at any cost, but don’t be like Pakistan and start tampering the ball.

Now that brings us to the question of ideology. So ideology has no place in politics? Why should people really support BJP if at the end of the day it is going to behave like any other political party that would go to any length to cling on to power?

A pessimist answer can obviously be that “yes, ideology has no place in modern politics” and that “all political parties are the same”, or as that Aunty in Pakistan had said, “yeh ***** saare mil kay humko paagal bana rahe hain ***** kay bachchay”.

However, it’s not so.

Ideology and politics are related, but they are not synonyms. Ideological battles are very different and distinct from electoral battles, though both are dependent on each other.

Just imagine; the leftist ideology has won all the battles that matter – academia, news media, entertainment media, activism, and judiciary – while they could never win electoral battles beyond two states of India.

The ‘right-wing’ or rather the ‘non-left wing’ of India needs to understand and learn lessons from the left on how these battles were won.

The left-wing doesn’t see it as “compromise” when some aspects of its ideology might lose in electoral battles and they end up allying with the same forces who defeated them. For example, the left lost badly in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. They had made a nuclear deal a big issue and they had many other disagreements with the Manmohan Singh government of UPA-1. But their ideology was not defeated and it continued to flourish under UPA-2 too.

The left-wing is crystal clear on what it wants – it wants to keep the Hindutva ideology at the margins, preferably vanquished forever. Hindutva is something that seeks to unite bulk of the Indians under one identity, who are otherwise divided along hundreds of sub-identities. These hundreds of sub-identities keep thousands of conflicts alive, and the left desperately needs conflicts to keep their ideology alive. This is one of the reasons why it’s easy to appear “neutral” when you are left-leaning. You’ve hundreds of sides to take to keep thousands of battles alive.

Till the “keep Hindutva out” objective is met, left knows that they are winning and they don’t see it as any compromise. That’s why you hardly saw any “intellectual” ruing murder of democracy or death of ideological politics when Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP government formation was being discussed.

The right-wing needs to have similar clarity of purpose and they need to find those three words like “keep Hindutva out”.

Read: Origins of Hindutva: Re-arming Hinduism in an era of nation-states

Narendra Modi gave three words – Congress Mukt Bharat – but to be honest, those words can’t be an ideological war cry. It’s a wonderful political war cry.

At this point in time, BJP is the only party that is with Hindutva ideology. Okay, even if we grant, for argument’s sake, that BJP has compromised on ideology, even the harshest critic has to accept that it is the only party that is at least giving lip service to the Hindutva ideology. Others are simply out to finish you. It is imperative that BJP holds on to power. If others come to power, you are finished, no mercy.

One can argue that BJP has become focused only on winning elections and forming a government, and it doesn’t do much for the ideology after it comes to power. I personally think it’s unfair to say that the party doesn’t care, but even if we agree on that, again for argument’s sake, why are we outsourcing the ideological battle entirely to the BJP? As I had pointed out earlier, if the left didn’t need to win elections and yet it could win ideological battles, can’t we learn a few things from them? How did they do it?

Finally, fighting elections and forming governments is also about administration. If we start quantifying everything that a government or local administration does, the bulk of its work will comprise steps that are ideologically agnostic, especially for an ideology like Hindutva. Therefore, actually, ideology might not even be relevant for many things a political party does once it is in power.

Fighting elections and running a government is the day job of a politician or a political party. They need to be in power to keep themselves alive. Like we need a job regardless of our personal beliefs.

Let us assume that you are vegetarian and want to promote vegetarianism, and you are also desperately looking for a job. If you get a job offer from KFC, will you refuse it? If you take it, will it mean you compromised on your ideology? Or you’d convince yourself that this is just to make sure you are earning regular money, and with that money, you’d take some steps to promote vegetarianism? It is not a perfect analogy, but essentially a political party needs to first survive if it wants to stick to any ideology.

To sum it up, BJP is expected to stick to an ideology and promote it, and they will be judged on that, however, it will be impractical to expect them to be a saint and let go opportunities to be in power. It will also be impractical and self-defeating to put the entire responsibility on a political party to take the ideological battle forward.

In my personal opinion, it is imperative that BJP keeps this ruthless spirit of winning elections and forming governments alive, it is only going to help the ideology even if the party appears to “compromise” on it. By the sheer show of being in power for a long time, not only you frustrate those whose objective is to “keep Hindutva out”, you start giving confidence and hope to people who were just too scared to speak up earlier. That’s how ideologies evolve and become stronger.

Maharashtra: Jayant Patil to replace Ajit Pawar as NCP legislative party leader, SC to hear NCP-Congress-Sena joint plea tomorrow

The meeting which was being convened at the YV Chavan Centre by NCP chief Sharad Pawar has concluded. After the meeting, NCP leader Nawab Malik told the media that a resolution was passed that the party does not endorse Ajit Pawar’s decision to ally with BJP to form the Maharashtra government and that the party has removed him as NCP legislative party leader.

Jayant Patil, supposedly a close aide of the party supremo is set to replace Ajit Pawar as NCP legislative party leader.

The new BJP-led government in Maharashtra will be defeated in the Assembly Speaker’s election, NCP leader Nawab Malik told reporters. He expressed confidence that the NCP-Congress-Shiv Sena combine will come to power in the state.

After the meeting, which the party claimed was attended by 50 out of the total strength of 54 MLAs, all the MLAs are being shifted to the Renaissance Hotel in Mumbai.

Failing to form the government NCP-Congress-Shiv Sena submitted a writ petition in the Supreme Court against Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the Governor of Maharashtra. They are demanding that the governor’s actions in the morning should be declared illegal and Sena-NCP and Congress should be invited to form the government in Maharashtra.

As per recent reports, the joint plea by the trio against the decision of Maharashtra Governor inviting Devendra Fadnavis to form the government on November 23 will be heard by the Supreme Court, tomorrow at 11.30 am in the morning.

The political drama in Maharashtra is becoming more and more intriguing ever since BJP along with Ajit Pawar of NCP threw a curve in the wee hours of the morning to end the Maharashtra impasse. Devendra Fadnavis was sworn-in as the CM whereas NCP’ Ajit Pawar as his deputy.

NCP and Shiv Sena strongly voiced their resentment over Ajit Pawar switching sides and giving his support to BJP.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar had earlier in the day alleged that the list of supporting MLAs submitted to Governor B.S. Koshyari by ‘rebel’ Ajit Pawar was not an official list of the party.

Maharashtra: 17 MLAs miss meeting called by Sharad Pawar, NCP says ‘they couldn’t make it in time but are in touch’

It was reported that at least seven legislators who were seen in at the swearing-in of Ajit Pawar in the morning have returned to the party fold and pledged their loyalty to Sharad Pawar. If sources are to be believed, 50 MLAs out of the total of 54 have arrived at a meeting being convened at YV Chavan Centre by the party supremo Sharad Pawar. It was also reported that Ajit Pawar along with 4 rebel MLAs might attend the meeting too and might be set to make an appearance.

Dilip Bankar and Manikrao Kokate, the MLAs from Nashik district, tweeted separately saying they were kept in dark about the oath-taking ceremony. Both the MLAs said they were with the NCP and expressed solidarity with its president.

Earlier, five NCP MLAs Rajendra Shingne (Buldhana), Sandeep Kshirsagar (Beed), Sunil Shelke (Maval), Sunil Bhusara (Vikramgad), Narhari Zirwal (Dindori) and Sunil Tingre (Wadgaon-Sheri) returned to the NCP fold after attending the oath-taking ceremony. Parli MLA Dhananjay Munde, who also is said to have attended the function at Raj Bhavan, turned up at the ongoing meeting of NCP MLAs convened by the Pawar senior.

However, it is now being reported that 17 MLAs were not present at the meeting called by NCP supremo Sharad Pawar. When asked about these MLAs, NCP said that they couldn’t make it to the venue by 4:30 PM, but all are in touch with the party.

Meanwhile, failing to form the government NCP-Congress-Shiv Sena submitted a writ petition in the Supreme Court against Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the Governor of Maharashtra. They are demanding that the governor’s actions in the morning should be declared illegal and Sena-NCP and Congress should be invited to form the government in Maharashtra.

Reports are also emerging wherein it is being said that Sena represented by Congress’ Abhishek Manu Singhvi, will approach the SC asking for a floor test within 24 hours to prevent horse-trading.

According to sources, the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress are expecting the Supreme Court hearing tonight. If that happens, we are in for yet another dramatic night ahead.

Supreme Court judgment in Ayodhya case against the Shariah: Sunni Waqf Board Lawyer beats a dead horse yet again

Sunni Waqf Board Lawyer Zafaryab Jilani has issued another controversial statement on the Ayodhya Verdict. He said that the verdict delivered by the five-judge bench was not final and that he was not satisfied with the verdict and was planning to file a review petition.

“The Supreme Court has already overruled more than a dozen decisions of these five judges,” he told IANS in an interview. He added, “A bench of 13 judges has been formed. The Supreme Court never says that the decision of the five judges is final and has to be accepted. Those who do not know the history of the law must be surprised to file a review petition.”

Jilani said further, “My written statement is we will accept the final decision of the Supreme Court. Whatever has come, is not the final decision. Article 137 allows that one who is not satisfied with the verdict can file a review petition.” He stated, “Others do not need to give their opinion on the matter. The proposal to replace five acres of land for the mosque is against the Sharia… Islamic Sharia does not allow this. The Waqf Act also says the same. The Supreme Court cannot change the mosque land. According to Article 142, it cannot go against any institution.”

Read: Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind takes a u-turn, decides not to file review petition against Ayodhya verdict of Supreme Court

The Sunni Waqf Board Lawyer also said that it didn’t matter if the party he represented was not willing to file a review petition. He said, “Whether or not it can file a reconsideration petition, doesn”t matter in our case. The Muslim community does not approve this decision. If the Sunni Waqf Board has to go against the reconsideration petition, go. A party cannot do anything in it.” Jilani also said that there are 200 million Muslims in this country, it didn’t matter if two laks were satisfied with the verdict.

Jilani has been issuing controversial statements ever since the verdict was delivered. Even on the day the verdict was delivered, Jilani said that he wasn’t happy with the verdict. This was when the litigant himself was happy that the verdict was delivered and said that he respected it.

On its part, the Sunni Waqf Board itself has been flip-flopping on the matter. The day the verdict was delivered, they had rejected their lawyer’s assertion and said that they will not be filing any review petition on the matter. Later, while they made it clear that they will not challenge the verdict, they said that will take a decision on whether to accept the 5-acre land by the 26th of November.

Read: Evidences prove that Hindus have always believed Ram Janmasthan is the place where Babri Mosque was built: Addendum to Ayodhya Verdict

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) meanwhile said on the 17th of November that it will file a review petition against the verdict and decided to reject the 5-acre land offered by the Supreme Court. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, a key litigant in the matter backtracked on its decision to file a review petition.

Thus, ever since the verdict was delivered, there has been continuous efforts to keep the Ayodhya verdict in the news. Asaduddin Owaisi, on the other hand, has been on a tirade against the verdict and quite blatantly attempting to invoke communal passions. At a time when the country welcome the verdict, a deliberate attempt appears to be underway to vitiate communal harmony.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Muslim community of the country has accepted the verdict and even if not of all them liked it, they have made peace with it and want to move ahead with their lives. However, a sinister agenda appears to be underway to keep alive the conflicts of the past so that mistrust between the communities can be milked to retain their power.

The Ram Janmabhoomi has been a volatile issue ever since independence. The centuries old dispute finally received a closure after the Supreme Court paved the way for a Bhavya Ram Mandir at the sacred site. However, it appears that some people do not seek a closure on the matter. They wish to keep the nation embroiled in the conflict so that they continue to benefit at the country’s expense.

After being checkmated, Shiv Sena files a writ petition in SC against the swearing in of Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar

The country woke up to a shocking development in the now bizarre bubble of Maharashtra politics. After weeks of speculations and talks between Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress over government formation in Maharashtra, a little after 8 AM, Devendra Fadnavis of BJP was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Ajit Pawar of NCP being sworn in as the Deputy CM.

Jilted Shiv Sena has now approached the Supreme Court against the swearing-in of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar.

According to ANI, Shiv Sena has now approached the Supreme Court and filed a writ petition against the swearing-in of Devendra Fadnavis as the Chief Minister and Ajit Pawar as the Deputy CM.

Up until yesterday, media had reported that the Common Minimum Program was almost decided between Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP.

In fact, many newspapers ran the front page news today that Uddhav Thackeray was all set to be the Chief Minister. After the Maharashtra elections, Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray had broken their alliance with BJP as the former was set on getting the CM position for Aditya Thackeray. However, after marathon meetings with NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and Sonia Gandhi, it was reportedly decided that Uddhav Thackeray would be the Chief Minister. That plan was upset when today morning, in a shocking turn of events, Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar were sworn in as CM and Deputy CM.
