Shivam Vij and The Print brazen out allegations of inventing quotes, Shekhar Gupta says ‘we need to own up to failures’

Well, Shekhar Gupt did not say ‘we need to own up to failures’. Certainly not in the context of Shivam Vij, contributing editor of Shekhar Gupta led The Print who is being accused of concocting quotes and then brazening out. Shekhar Gupta actually said this in 2007 when he was with the Indian Express. But since The Print believes in attributing decade-old quotes to current scenarios, we thought it would be a fun exercise to see how time changes context.

Shivam Vij, the contributing editor of The Print, has been accused of inventing a quote out of thin air for his report titled ‘Why Kashmiri Pandits may never return to the Valley’. Shivam Vij used a conversation he claims to have had with author Arvind Gigoo in order to peddle his agenda. The son of the Kashmiri Pandit “quoted”, Siddhartha Gigoo, came out on Twitter and accused Shivam Vij of lying, saying that his father never gave such a quote and has never spoken to The Print.

In his report, Shivam Vij had quoted Gigoo as if he had spoken to him in today’s context with respect to this article. A copy of the article we had archived shows that no date of the conversation or context of this quote was mentioned.

Archive version of The Print article

After Siddhartha Gigoo, Arvind Gigoo’s son contested the quote published by Shivam Vij, he and Shekhar Gupta led The Print brazened it out claiming that the quote was actually accurate and was from Vij’s meeting with Gigoo a decade ago in 2010.

When Gigoo tweeted to The Print saying that his father had never spoken to The Print’s reporter, after hours of “checking”, The Print brazened it out claiming that the quote was accurate and that Shivam Vij had tweeted the same.

When one checks Vij’s Twitter handle, the shamelessness becomes even more apparent.

Shivam Vij claimed that the quote is accurate and was taken in 2010-2012. That is almost a decade ago when terrorism in Kashmir was at its peak. When Gigoo confronts Vij, shamelessly and brazenly, Vij asks Gigoo if ‘he has gone crazy’.

The Print and Shivam Vij seem to be of the opinion that a decade-old opinion when the times and situations were different can simply be quoted out of context to suit their current propaganda. After this shameless display of arrogance by The Print and Shivam Vij, the publication led by Shekhar Gupta sneakily changed the paragraph where Arvind Gigoo was quoted.

Essentially, Shivam Vij wrote an article about how Kashmiri Hindus might not return to the valley even after the abrogation of Article 370 by quoting a Kashmiri Hindu from a conversation that was held a decade ago.

Going by The Print’s stand, it seems perfectly reasonable that Shekhar Gupta’s statement made in 2007 can be used in the current context without a care in the world. In 2007, Shekhar Gupta had written a 2751 word email to Indian Express staff saying that as the group prepares itself “for a big leap forward,” it needs an honest introspection and own up to “our failures and…acknowledge our weaknesses.” He wrote: “In a year when the media industry has grown by nearly 25%, our revenues have declined by 3%,” adding that “it does look to me as if all of us took our eye off the ball.”

Pertinently, he wrote, “The truth is that we have been much too forgiving with ourselves in a market-place getting less forgiving by the day”. Further, at the time he was the group’s editor-in-chief, he wrote, “…requested the members of the top management team to take a wage freeze for this year. In addition, I have also decided to defer a significant part of my compensation until we see some real improvement.”

While Shekhar Gupta and his current publication, The Print has become too shameless to bother to acknowledge mistakes, we think, going by The Print’s editorial standards that these words can easily be attributed the Shekhar Gupta today, in context of Shivam Vij’s shenanigans.

While the words can be attributed easily, we are not holding our breath about The Print introspecting and being unforgiving with itself as far as its dwindling editorial standards are concerned.

I-T dept issues show cause notice to Congress over Rs 175 crores black money allegedly received through Hawala

The Indian National Congress has received a show-cause notice from the Income Tax department over allegations of receiving black money to the tune of Rs 175 crores from a Hyderabad-based company. I kept asking but no one came to help: Mumbai lawyer chases molester Javed at Dadar station even as a bystander empathises with accused

0

Days after the horrific Hyderabad rape and murder case, Mumbai based 24-year-old crime lawyer chased down the man who allegedly molested her, caught him as he tried to escape and handed him over to cops even as one fellow commuter empathised with the accuser. According to a report by Mid-Day, the lawyer was walking towards the first class of the ladies compartment on platform no. 3 at Dadar station at 11 PM on Saturday when the accused Javed Jan Shaha allegedly put his hand between her legs from behind.

The woman punched him with his elbow and when she turned around, she saw him run away. She held him by his collar but he managed to board the Borivli fast train which was about to leave the platform. Holding his collar, she also boarded the train as she did not want to let him go.

Even as she fought him alone, the woman alleges that none of the bystanders came to help her. In fact, she alleges, that one even showed sympathy to the man and asked her to ease her grip as she might be ‘hurting’ his neck. She then alleges that the man started touching her feet to apologise.

Adding to her ordeal, she alleges that the police, instead of helping her out, were reluctant to file an FIR and even warned her about the legal hurdles she may have to face should she  pursue the case. However, when she told them she’s a lawyer herself, they filed the case.

The accused, 32-year-old Javed is a medical student and hails from a good family. However, the woman alleged that his WhatsApp chats revealed that he was sending vulgar messages to women just to harass them.

Expressing shock at the apathy of bystanders, she said that what shocked her most about the incident was that in a city like Mumbai, no one came forward to help her.

Legalising prostitution or pornography will not bring down rapes. This is why the argument is flawed

The only thing that binds prostitution, pornography, and rape is the apparent element of sex. However, just because there is one element common in all three, it doesn’t mean that they are all heavily dependent on each other. This is a mistake that is being made again in wake of the Hyderabad rape-and-murder case where a young veterinary doctor was raped and then burnt to death by four men.

Some people have suggested that prostitution should be made legal in India and the ban on pornography should be lifted to make India safer for women. Apparently taking these two steps could reduce the number of rapes in India. The argument is flawed and reflects the lack of understanding of the problem, which appears to have become an epidemic in India.

Most European countries have given legal status to prostitution and pornography, but are those countries or societies free of incidents of rape? In fact, official data shows that the incidents of rape per thousand people in those countries are much higher than what is reported in India.

Yes, one can argue that many rape cases go unreported in India, however, the argument that we are evaluating here is whether legalising prostitution and pornography are solutions to the problem of rape. They clearly aren’t, as they don’t appear to have helped the countries were sex work or adult entertainment industries are established and recognised industries. Of late, the rape problem in Europe has gotten only worse.

Let us evaluate both of these supposed solutions independently. Let us first take prostitution. By suggesting that rape incidents can be controlled if prostitution is legalised, one is essentially assuming that rapes happen because people don’t have easy access to sex. In a more crude way, the argument is that men are raping women as they are not finding enough women ready to have sex with them.

Is that why rapes happen? Then no married man ever should commit the crime of rape. Defence lawyers in India are supposed to come up with most weird arguments, how will our society react if some lawyer of a rapist comes with an argument that his ‘poor client’ was driven to commit rape because his wife was not having regular sex with him?

Secondly, how are we so sure that people who frequent brothels don’t commit rape? And thirdly, it is not about not having enough women ready to have sex with you; even Casanovas and ‘handsome charming men’ have been found guilty of rape.

There is another issue, that of presumed “easy access”. Are we so sure that millions of women will register as sex-workers if and when prostitution is legalised in India, thus making this service “affordable”? Going to a prostitute will cost money, and given the economic background of rapists that we now know in the Hyderabad case, are we sure they would have spent money on prostitutes?

Similar augments can be made against the idea of bringing down rapes by legalising and making pornography available to the masses. It is really naive to think that in today’s world, with everyone having a cheap smartphone and with India having one of the cheapest data rates in the world, people don’t have access to pornography. Courts might have pushed ISPs to ban popular porn sites, but what about video clips and images that can be shared via WhatsApp and other means?

In fact, if the mobile phones of the Hyderabad rapists are checked, one shouldn’t be surprised to find a collection of pornographic images and video clips. In the 2013 Shakti Mills gang-rape case of Mumbai, it was found that the rapists were not only porn addicts, but they also made the victim act the way they saw ‘actors’ perform in those pornographic clips. Pornography also enables a mindset that you need a new act every time. You are not satisfied with the just 3-4 video clips that you can save. This is the mindset that enables you to go on a hunt for new “targets”. Therefore, one can argue, and many have argued, that pornography actually leads to an increase in sex-related crimes.

The biggest flaw in linking both prostitution and pornography with rape is the presumed belief that rape is just about sex. It often is not about sex. It is invariably about a man applying his brute power over a woman to prove to himself (and in some cases to his group) his masculinity and sexual power. Why the man wants to prove that could be triggered by various reasons, but a desire to have sex is not one of the reasons.

The only arguments in favour of legalising prostitution and pornography should be about free will and free markets. Obviously, the arguments of morality, human trafficking, exploitation etc. would be against the idea. But these are the set of arguments that we should stick to when talking about prostitution or pornography. Let us not link the problem of rape with them.

ISRO plans to launch spy satellite RISAT 2BR1, India’s ‘eye in the sky’ to boost surveillance

0

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has planned to launch another Radar-Imaging Earth Observation Satellite Risat-2BR1 with the help of the PSLV-C48 rocket from Sriharikota. As per a Times Of India report, the launch is scheduled on December 11.

As per reports, ISRO has plans to launch a total of four or five space-surveillance satellites in the Risat series. The first Risat satellite was launched on May 22 this year. After the scheduled Risat 2BR1 launch this month, ISRO will probably launch the third satellite Risat 2BR2 later this month. Times Of India has quoted an ISRO source as saying that at least 4 satellites are required to keep surveillance on a particular spot on a daily basis.

The Risat satellites are capable of seeing through clouds and at night too. It is equipped with an X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar and the radar system is an advanced system of the Israeli TECSAR system. The Risat has a resolution of 0.35m. Objects with a distance of 0.35m between them can be distinguished by the satellite which can cover a swath of 5-10 km.

Risat 2BR1 has a mission life of 5 years. It will be placed in the polar orbit at around 561 km altitude.

The Risat satellites, besides their surveillance capabilities, also send all-weather SAR images for use in agriculture, forestry and disaster management. India’s Risat will do 24-hours border surveillance and will also keep an eye on infiltration and cross border activities.

The Risat 2B launched on May 22 had replaced the older version of Risat 2 which had completed its 5-year lifespan. The Risat 2’s images were used to plan the cross border surgical strike in September 2016 on Pakistan’s terror launchpads across the LoC.

The PSLV-C48 will also carry 4 Lemur 2 CubeSats for the USA and 2 QPS SAR microsatellites being sent by a Japanese private company.

Ayodhya case: Lawyer representing Muslim parties, Rajeev Dhavan, sacked unceremoniously by Jamiat advocate on record

Rajeev Dhavan, the advocate representing Sunni Waqf Board and other Muslim parties in the Ayodhya case has taken to social media to inform that he has been sacked unceremoniously.

About an hour ago, he posted on his Facebook account that he has just been sacked from the Babri case by Advocate on Record Ejaz Maqbool who was representing Jamiat. “Have sent formal letter accepting the ‘sacking’ without demur. No longer involved in the review or the case,” he posted.

In another post, he added, “I have been informed that Mr Madani has indicated that I was removed from the case because I was unwell. This is total nonsense. He has a right to instruct his lawyer AOR Ejaz Maqbool to sack me which he did on instructions. But the reason being floated is malicious and untrue.”

In November, talking about Sunni Waqf Board’ decision to not file a review petition against the SC verdict on Ayodhya, the senior advocate said that they have taken this decision under immense pressure. He went on to castigate the chairman of the Sunni Waqf Board, Zafar Ahmad Farooqui by saying that since he has an FIR against him he is subject to the pressure of Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, hinting that it is under Adityanath’s pressure that Farooqui decided that they will not file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Ayodhya dispute.

NASA locates ISRO’s Vikram Lander on moon surface, credits Chennai techie for the discovery

The NASA has located ISRO’s Vikram Lander on the moon surface. NASA’s Moon Mission located Chandrayaan 2’s and has released images of the impact site.

According to NASA, the green dots in the above image indicate confirmed or likely spacecraft debris. The blue dots indicate disturbed soil where small bits of the spacecraft churned up the regolith. The ‘S’ in the above image indicates debris identified by Shanmuga Subramanian.

The above images were taken by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) camera which shows change in moon’s surface due to impact of Vikram Lander’s hand landing. Chandrayaan 2 was scheduled for a soft landing on the intervening night of 6th and 7th September, 2019 but lost contact minutes before it could land. After the LRO released first images taken on 17th September, 2019 on 26th September, 2019, Shanmuga Subramanian contacted the LRO project after positively identifying the debris. Following this, the LRO team confirmed the identification by comparing before and after images. The debris identified by Shanmuga is about 750 mtrs northwest of main crash site.

Shanmuga, who was credited by NASA for finding the Vikram Lander, is a mechanical engineer based in Chennai.

On 17th November, he had tweeted to NASA at possible landing site of Vikram Lander. He had also written to NASA about his discovery.

Bizarre: SP youth wing workers give onions on loan by keeping Aadhaar Card and silver jewellery as mortgage in Varanasi

0

The SP party youth wing workers in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, have been giving onions on loan by keeping Aadhaar Card and silver jewelry as a mortgage. They said it is their way of protesting against high onion prices.

Speaking about it, a Samajwadi Party worker told news agency ANI, “This is being done to register our protest against the high price of onions. We are giving onions by keeping Aadhaar Card or silver jewelry as a mortgage. At some shops, onions are being kept in lockers as well.”

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5M46xydDpo]

Calling it a unique way of protesting against the soaring onion prices, the workers of the Samajwadi Party youth wing have adapted a bizarre way of fleecing the illiterate and the poor. Keeping jewelry made out of a poor person’s life time-saving in lieu of something a petty as onions and terming it as a protest to embarrass the ruling government over the unprecedented increase in prices of onions is beyond any normal person’s intellect.

Talking about this outlandish protest a local SP party worker, Anshul Yadav said: “This is being done to register our protest against the high price of onion. Recently a truck carrying inions worth Rs 26 lakhs was stolen and now people are even keeping onions under lock and key.”

The union government had in its attempt to curb the rising onion prices had to act as a facilitator for onion imports to ease the process and ensure a quick and healthy supply from other countries. Further, in view of the high prices of the essential commodity in the market, the Union Cabinet on November 20 approved the import of 1.2 lakh metric tonnes of onion.

This bizarre protest by the workers of the SP youth wing in Varanasi came after the Congress party workers in Lucknow on Friday sold onions at Rs 40 per kg outside the Assembly to protest against the rising prices of the essential commodity.

Speaking to ANI, Congress leader Shailendra Tiwari said: “The rising price of vegetables has badly affected the people. The government is not willing to listen to the pleas of the common man.”
