After Ishrat Jahan, Shayara Bano, another triple talaq petitioner joins BJP

In October 2015, 36-year-old Shayara Bano was divorced by her husband, Rizwan Ahmed via a letter when she was visiting her parents. He even took away her kids aged 11 and 13. Hailing from Uttarakhand, Bano led the crusade against the instant triple talaq which led to the landmark Supreme Court judgement last year which outlawed instant triple talaq. On Friday, Bano joined the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), making her the second of the five petitioners in the triple talaq case to join the saffron camp after Ishrat Jahan who also joined the BJP earlier this year.

Bano’s induction into the BJP got mixed reactions with the BJP hailing the move claiming this sends out a message to those who think the BJP is anti-Muslim party. As per reports, she will be formally welcomed into the party at a ceremony in Delhi this month end.

Bano, who hails from Hempur Daya in Uttarakhand, was reportedly also tormented for dowry and accused her in-laws of forcing her to undergo 6 abortions with an alleged intention of killing her.

On 26 February, 2016 she filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the practice of triple talaq, halala and polygamy. This prompted the Modi government to file a petition against triple talaq based on her petition. Her petition wanted the court to strike down those Islamic practices on the premise that they violated the Articles 14, 15, 21 and 25 of the constitution.

Article 14 pertains to right to equality, article 15 states that there shall be no discrimination against any citizen on grounds only of religion, race, caste, sex, article 21 deals with the protection of life, personal liberty and article 25 deals with freedom of practice and propagation of religion.

Shayara’s petition wasn’t welcomed by the Islamic lawmakers and All India Muslim Personal Board (AIMPLB), some clerics reportedly asked her to withdraw her petition. She also left her native place Kashipur and went on the move to avoid undue pressure on her.

Bano said she has joined the BJP because it was support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi because of which they (triple talaq petitioners) got justice. Earlier, Ishrat Jahan, another petitioner in the case, too joined the BJP since it ‘supported the cause she was fighting for’.

Merchants of Menace booked: Jignesh, Alpesh and Hardik booked for trespassing and falsifying evidence

After the suspected hooch tragedy, the ‘Merchants of Menace’, Jignesh Mevani, Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor and Hardik Patel, staying true to their ‘forever agitating’ image, decided to launch a stir against liquor and raid liquor dens all on their own.

Later that evening, the trio raided and allegedly found two pouches at a house in Adivata village, Gandhinagar. They then proceeded to circulate the video of the alleged raid.

Today, two days after this raid, the police has booked the ‘Merchants of Menace’ on charges of house trespassing and providing false evidence about the seizure of liquor from the house they raided.

After their raid, the trio had produced the two pouches of country liquor as evidence of the thriving illegal liquor business, and the police had later rubbished their claims in a press conference.

In fact, Gandhinagar SP Virendra Singh had said that the pouches of country liquor had been planted in that house moments before this raid was conducted by the three ‘ever agitating’ politicians.

“We have registered a case against them under IPC Sections 452 (house trespass), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 114 (abettor present when offence is committed) and 193 (punishment for false evidence),’” inspector VN Yadav of Sector 21 police station, told DNA.

The bizarre MLA Jignesh Mevani who probably needs help and was recently booked for sharing a morphed image of a columnist took to Twitter and questioned the state government as to why the trio was being booked. Jignesh Mevani has a history of being unstable and violent. A video had recently surfaced that showed Jignesh Mevani abusing police officers in the worst possible language. A case was registered earlier against him for ‘fomenting violence’ after he had instigated violence ahead of PM Modi’s Karnataka rally. He said on Saturday :

Hardik Patel who was recently welcomed and eggs and sandals and in April had a bailable warrant issued against him for not being present during his sedition case hearing, too took to Twitter to equate people making and selling country liquor to terrorists.

Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor, the third pillar of the ‘Merchant of Menace’ trio said he wasn’t scared of such cases and that he will continue to take such steps.

It is interesting, however, that neither of them seems to be defending themselves against the charges of trespassing and more importantly, falsifying evidence.

Police questions digital ‘news portal’ owner Rafik Sheikh in Dhule lynching case: Indian Express

As reported by The Indian Express, the Dhule Police has recorded the statement of an owner of a local digital news platform ‘Media Live’, Rafik Sheikh, whose news story on child lifters went viral in the area. The police are probing if social media posts that went viral in Dhule instigated the mob that killed five members of a nomadic tribe on 1st July at Rainpada village in Dhule around 350 kilometres from Mumbai.

Rafik Sheikh, who runs Media Live, published a news story that claimed child lifter groups were seen lurking around in Rainpada, which is a part of the Sakri taluka in Dhule. The 2.08-minute long Marathi news capsule – using graphics, still images and file footage claimed that an attempt was made to abduct an infant aged one-and-a-half years by a group of men dressed in burkas in the Chand Tara area of Sakri on 29th June morning.

According to the story woven, the entire episode was foiled after a woman spotted the men, chased them away and saved the infant. The clip also mentioned the names of two Sakri policemen asking them to take note of the incident and asks viewers to remain vigilant against such child lifters in the area. In the end, the video shows the number of the Sakri police station and urges people to call if they spot anything suspicious.

While talking to The Indian Express, Rafik, said “I was called in for questioning. We have clarified that while the news capsule was aired at 1 pm on June 29, as soon as we learned that there was no such case reported at Sakri it was pulled out within ten minutes. However, by then the clip had gone viral and resurfaced after the July 1 lynching.”

The cyber crime team of Dhule police probing the case are yet to confirm whether the lynching case was related to viral social media posts including the one posted by Sheikh.

On 1st July, five members of the Dongrinanthpanthi Gosawi community were killed by a mob in Rainpada hamlet of Dhule in Maharashtra. The mob suspected they were child lifters after rumours had spread across the region. 25 arrest were subsequently made by the police, amongst which seven were from Rainpada, where the incident took place, the rest are from neighbouring areas located at a distance of 2 to 20 km.

We came across their Facebook profile, which was created on 19th November 2017, with merely 763 followers.

On delving further, we also found a post on ‘Media Live’ Facebook page where it was seen campaigning for an NCP leader Prof. Sandip Trambyakrao Bedse.

The poster reads:

Will try to implement 7th pay commission for teachers and non-teaching staff in Maharashtra, like central government employees”.

The Facebook post reads:

Vote for Prof. Sandip Trambyakrao Bedse, TDF’s official candidate, and make him win with a massive margin. Don’t fall for Paithani (saree) and other false promises, give your invaluable vote to Sandip Bedse who understands teachers’ issues.

In recent times, ‘fake news’ has become an epidemic. So-called celebrity journalists are often, on one hand, very vocal about the fake news menace that has infiltrated the social media space, and on the other frequently indulge in the same.

Kashmiri separatist Asiya Andrabi sent to 10 day NIA custody for inciting riots and waging war against India

Kashmiri separatist leader Asiya Andrabi has been sent to a 10 day National Investigative Agency (NIA) custody, for waging war against India, Indian Express has reported.

The Dukhtaran-e-Millat chief and her two associates namely Sofi Fehmeeda and Naheeda Nasreen were already lodged in Srinagar Jail from where they were picked up by the NIA. They were lodged there owing to cases filed by the Jammu and Kashmir police.

Following NIA’s involvement in the matter, they were brought to Delhi on a transit remand and then subsequently sent to the 10-day custody of the agency by a special court.

As per the report, this arrest follows the 27 April FIR registered by the NIA, where it accused Andrabi and others of charges like sedition, criminal conspiracy, waging war against the country, inciting riots and promoting enmity between communities. The remand application of the NIA reportedly also accused Andrabi’s organisation of being in touch with Pakistani associates, including terrorists.

As per NIA’s IG Alok Mittal, Andrabi has been accused of using the media to spread hateful speeches which include, call for violence against India, and the secession of Jammu and Kashmir.

A Hindustan Times report has claimed that action against Andrabi was recommended during a security review meeting on 3 March, which was chaired by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. It is claimed that during the meeting, a complete list of prisoners needing to be shifted to other states was prepared. The list included the names of Hurriyat leaders.

One of the examples of Asiya Andrabi’s anti-national activities was reported in March when she hoisted the Pakistani flag at an undisclosed location and reportedly claimed that all Muslims in the Indian subcontinent were Pakistanis by default.

She was also quoted as saying that, people are either Muslims or Kafirs, and a Muslim country is Pakistan which was founded on the basis of Islam and not on the basis of nationality.

Rajdeep Sardesai, Ashutosh accused of conducting ‘fake sting operation’ surrender in court, get bail: Reports

Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashutosh, eminent journalist Rajdeep Sardesai and Arunodaya Mukherjee ‘surrendered’ in ACJM-3 court on Friday for airing a ‘fake sting operation’ in 2006 on news channels IBN7 and CNN-IBN (both channels have now been re-branded as News18 and CNN-News18 respectively, and are currently part of the Reliance-owned Network18 group). The Court had in the past, ordered that a warrant be issued against the accused.

We reported earlier about how Dr Agarwal, against whom this sting operation was conducted, had claimed that this fake operation had ruined his life and career and has been fighting the battle to regain his life and reputation in these 12 years.

As reported by Jagran the three accused immediately submitted their bail applications after surrendering and the court sanctioned the same.

As reproduced by Opindia, while speaking to portal Bhadas4media.com, Dr Agarwal had alleged that Jamshed Khan, whom he refers to as a blackmailer, had concocted the fake sting operation and given it to IBN7. He further alleged that the channels IBN7 and CNN-IBN were newly launched and were looking for sensational stories, which is why they continuously aired the program for almost a week in July 2006. This led to an inquiry against Dr Agarwal. He was working as an orthopaedic surgeon at District Hospital, Gautam Budh Nagar at that time.

Aggrieved by the alleged defamation and hardships he had to face, Agarwal issued a legal notice to all the concerned parties in November 2006. In this long drawn battle against Rajdeep Sardesai, Ashutosh and others, Dr Agarwal has been fighting at various levels, from the Allahabad High court, Delhi High court to the Supreme court.

After Allahabad High Court granted relief to seven out of nine accused, Dr Agarwal had approached the Supreme court for the same.

In February this year, it was reported that the Supreme Court had allowed cases to be followed up against Rajdeep Sardesai, Ashutosh, Raghav Bahl, and others, which Dr Agarwal considered another step towards his victory.

According to Jagran, the Supreme court, in its order, said that the case should be taken up by the lower court, and had also, previously ordered for issuing warrants against those accused. The three accused, as reported by Jagran surrendered before the court on Friday and were immediately granted bail thereafter. Other two accused, namely, Sanjay Roy Chaudhary and Harsh Chawla had surrendered in court two days ago.

Madrasa in Kerala expels girl for wearing a Bindi, as she showed indifference to Islamic teachings

In a possibly blatant display of religious intolerance, a North Kerala based Madrasa has expelled a class 5 student as she wore a Bindi while acting in a short film, Hindustan Times has reported.

As per the report, some fringe elements had brought to the Madrasa authorities’ notice that the girl had worn a Bindi while she acted in a short film, following which the action was taken.

As a result of the expulsion, the girl’s father – Ummer Malayil, who hails from Kozhikode, took to Facebook to condemn the action. The Facebook post which has gone viral expresses his angst against the Madrasa authorities.

He claimed that his daughter was a good student, who also excelled in extra-curricular activities like singing and dancing. Thus he claimed that despite her impeccable talent she was expelled for the decision to sport a Bindi. The father also decided to take on the radical Islamists by expressing relief that she wasn’t given a stone pelting punishment.

The report claimed that while many supported the father for his stance, there were some who justified the Madrasa’s action by claiming that wearing a Bindi was un-Islamic and against sharia laws.

A Bangalore Mirror report which also covered this incident claimed that the reason cited for her expulsion was that she showed “indifference to Islamic teachings”. The report claimed that there has been a posturing by Kerala’s madrasas that they have implemented reforms to reflect diversity, but this incident though proved otherwise.

Incidentally, this isn’t the only time Madrasas have landed into a controversy when it comes to girls.

We had reported in December last year how the Uttar Pradesh police had rescued 51 girls from a Lucknow Madrasa where they were allegedly being held hostage and molested by the madrasa’s manager.

Also in May, it was reported that a girl was raped in a madrasa following which it was shut by the authorities.

Ram Madhav as the knight in shining armour – Who needs it?

When I, as a BJP voter and supporter, look at the last four years and the statements made by BJP leadership, there are many which fill me with immense pride. BJP under Narendra Modi has broken the ongoing environment of Political feudalism which plagued the Indian polity ever since the aristocratic son to the rich lawyer of Allahabad made a tryst with destiny at the stroke of the Midnight in his chaste, Victorian English.

My mind goes back to the man, who was written off as an ambitious aberration by the Political Pundits, never expected to ever rule the nation in reality, walking up the hallowed stairs of world’s largest democracy, bending down and touch the ground with his forehead. I remember him as the man, much maligned by the lobby which was in shock even after a thumping majority, to call himself Pradhan Sevak, or the Chief Servant of the people of this nation.

Then I also remember the media and assorted intellectuals, displaced from the power structure by this sudden tsunami which their cunning calculations missed out totally, coming together to attack, malign and hound Modi and his ministers. Those attacking the Prime Minister and his ministers weren’t nameless trolls. They were people well identified but such was the steely conspiracy of silence that no one uttered a word.

The man who swore to cut Narendra Modi to pieces in the Assembly elections was promoted by the Congress. And no one spoke, not one squeak. Congress outside the BJP did not speak, the Congress within the BJP did not speak. Not that self-made people like Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh and Smriti Irani needed defending from parasitic intellectuals. I remember one statement of Ms Irani, who faced vilest of abuses on the social media once speaking in an interview to Rajdeep Sardesai, saying: “I am not some Political Cinderella waiting to be rescued.” Oh, it so endeared the Minister, as a people’s representative and as a working woman.

This is not to say that Ms Sushma Swaraj needs some rescuing. She has been a strong woman all along and does not need any defending. That Ram Madhav chose to defend Ms Swaraj in the aftermath of a controversy surrounding the out-of-turn release of passport to a Muslim Lady, Anas Siddiqui with her pre-conversion name, seems to be his own decision to self-appoint himself as some knight in shining armour to Ms Swaraj for reasons best known to him.

The lady in question, applied for a passport with her earlier name, with a fake address where she does not live. Concerns were raised by the relevant officer. With the case hyped by the media, and Ms Swaraj who seemingly is largely becoming captive to her own carefully cultivated image took no time in sidelining the legitimate concerns raised by the officer, intervened. The passport was released promptly, circumventing the procedure and transferred the concerned officer. As we later find out, Ms Swaraj was out of India when this happened. This could possibly explain her failure to read the pulse of the nation and mistake in deciding which way the wind would eventually blow and where the dust would settle.

There is a wise saying that if something can go without saying, let it go. But thanks to the advisers Ms Swaraj seems to have freshly found, particularly from the sections which hate Narendra Modi to no end, she decided not to let it go. Clubbing the genuine and polite questions with few downright abusive tweets of unknown sources, she responded with the trademark Delhi-wallah response of – Tu Jaanta Nahin main Kaun hoon, of course, not in those exact words.

The media, the leftists and all the known Modi detractors jumped out like croaking frogs after the first shower of Monsoon from their slimy corners, gleefully clapping every time Ms Swaraj took one of her down with her brilliant jibes. As she blocked the Right Wing handles en masse, she unblocked some leftists on social media. That be as it may, while we had just come out of this whole unsavoury saga, bruised and humiliated, Shri Ram Madhav came out with this article.

Apart from other points mentioned above, I found this article intellectually shallow for someone of Ram Madhav’s stature.

He begins the article from “Whether EAM Sushma Swaraj was responsible for the transfer of a junior-level employee or not…”. The way the terms Junior-level pounces at you the moment you were reading, you know from the first line that this piece is not about defending anyone, it is about disciplining the dissent.

The first sentence itself sets the tone as if mocking the outrage for a mere “junior-level employee”. Then he dismisses the queries raised, calling them secondary issues, not because they are indeed secondary, rather because he says they need to be investigated. All charges, I would say, need to be investigated, but they do not become secondary because the investigation is pending. He does not even tell us if there is an investigation ongoing in the matter.

The retrospective changes in the prevailing policies do not amount to an official assurance of fair investigation. Between the concerns raised by the larger section of social media supporters of Ms Swaraj and this government regarding the national security implication of diluting the rules in a media-heavy case, and a few vile abuses that the Honorable Minister received from some unknown handles, he says latter is of more importance.

Having confessed that the primary purpose of his post is not to delve into the issues of the matter, and the procedural and policy implications for the matter, he, however, goes into the case again.

He then tries to create an adorable and sympathetic picture of Anas Siddiqui who deserves public affection, not outrage. He presents the case as some kind of commendable bravery on the part of the lady who converted to Islam some 15-years back but continued to hold on to her Hindu name.

The passport form clearly asks if the applicant has had any aliases, to which the lady, in this case, had responded in negative, while the documents mentioned otherwise. Ram Madhav converts this act of deliberate hiding of the facts in a government application into an act of bravery, calling it a glorious example of Omnitheist nature of Indian culture. He says that instead of taking on the lady for lying, he suggests that social media activists should have taken on the cleric who made the lady change her name, under duress.

Investigations have not happened, making the matter secondary, but that doesn’t stop Shri Ram Madhav from imagining the scenario of Ms Tanvi Seth’s wedding, and painting it for the junior-level BJP supporters. The lady, poor, shivering and docile, rebelling from the obvious opposition of her parents to marry out of religion, suddenly going all submissive in front of a Maulvi, solemnizing the wedding, obviously post-conversion to ensure that the pious Muslim husband could marry a Kaafir Hindu, of course, post-conversion to Islam.

When the media continues to call the wedding of two Muslim individuals as inter-faith marriage, who are we to question? Anyway, the point is that Mr Madhav wants those on Twitter to somehow get on a Time-Machine, travel 15 years back and outrage over the Maulvi who officiated over Ms Tanvi Seth’s wedding. However impossible this may be, it presents the possibility to write another Op-Ed, as to how junior-level BJP supporters ought to keep their long, Aryan noses out of the private matters of the wedding of Ms Siddiqui in line with the Omnitheist culture of this great country? Writing to defend Anas Siddiqui would be a climb-down from writing to defend the Honorable Minister, but am sure, would prove to be as PR-worthy.

Ram Madhav ends his article by quoting Francis Fukuyama. He writes Social trust is the unspoken, unwritten bond between fellow citizens and such. He admonishes the supporters for distrusting their leader and in his own sweet, sophisticated way, directs them to surrender the instruments of dissent, lay down their weapons and bow down to the grand and grotesque humongous statures of our elected leaders like Ms Sushma Swaraj.

He forgets that the installation of demi-Gods is the point from where degeneration of democracy begins. In a democracy, it is silly to ask people to surrender the right to question their representatives on their actions. Democracy is all about accountability and answerability of the elected class. Democracy thrives when people are not made into giants and Gods.

Ms Sushma Swaraj has done great deeds for the nation, not to consider her vow to shave off her head to prevent a foreign-born from ruling over India. She is indeed, a great leader. But to demand blind, unquestioning trust for her from the people is something on which tyrannical regimes are built. It is an idea which is not conducive to the idea of democracy.

I too would, taking a leaf from the noted writer Ram Madhav, end my rant, my lament here with a quote from the famed speech titled “The Grammar of Anarchy” made by Dr. BR Ambedkar on the 25th of November, 1949, where he said, ” There is nothing wrong in being grateful to great men who have rendered life-long services to the nation. But there are limits to gratefulness. … This caution is far more necessary in the case of India than in case of any other country. For in India, Bhakti or what may be called the path of devotion or Hero-worship plays a part in its politics, unequalled in magnitude by the part it plays in the politics of any other country in the world. Bhakti in religion may be a path to the salvation of the soul. But in politics, Bhakti or hero-worship is sure road to degradation…”

Public memory is short, and the heart of an ordinary citizen is large and forgiving. But every act of forgiveness requires some amount of forgetfulness. People like Ram Madhav would do well to let the wind blow and this episode pass, instead of burdening this sad episode with such needless intervention, while a no-frills statement from the minister that “we regret if we gave an appearance of partisanship in policies” would have been desirable.

Ms Swaraj has defended the party while in opposition so long, Mr Madhav. She surely is no political Cinderella. In your urge to defend the indefensible, you are only alienating a good leader from her supporters. You do not fight elections, Ms Swaraj does. As I said, If something can go without saying, let it.

22 kids shifted from Mother Teresa’s charity after human trafficking charges against nuns

A day after 2 nuns were detained and one was arrested for selling babies, 22 children have been moved from Mother Teresa’s Ranchi Missionaries of Charity, Nirmal Hriday, to another shelter home in the same vicinity by the Child Welfare Committee.

“We had moved 13 girls and 22 children from Nirmal Hriday and Shishu Niketan respectively to a new home,” said Rupa Verma to PTI. Child Welfare Committee’s Ranchi Chairperson Rupa Verma had filed a complaint against Nirmal Hriday staff Anima Indwar after she sold a baby to a UP couple.

After the complaint by Rupa Verma, Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Shyamanand Mandal had said that an FIR had been lodged under section 370 of IPC, and three people were detained for interrogation. As confirmed by Mandal one women staff, named Anima Indwar amongst the detained, have already been arrested and one nun against whom the police had substantial evidence would be arrested soon, said the officer-in-charge. SN Mandal confirmed that Rs 65000 has been recovered from Anima.

“It was found during the course of the investigation that they were selling of unwed mothers at Rs 50,000 to 1.5 lakh. At least four children have been illegally sold by them,” said Mandal

The Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata has issued a statement regarding the Ranchi chapter and the charges of human trafficking. “We are shocked at such news, which totally goes against the values and ethics espoused by the Missionaries of Charity, the nun, and its founder. The Charity is looking into the allegations against the accused employees in Jharkhand with all seriousness”, said Sunita Kumar, the chapter’s spokesperson.

Mother Teresa herself has been a controversial figure while she lived. Aroop Chatterjee, the author of ‘Mother Teresa, the final verdict’ has disputed the benevolent image that is largely espoused by the world. He has said in his book that Mother Teresa never ‘saved lives’. Her charity was a ‘home for the dying’ where no doctors were available to cure the ill.

He also writes, “Mother Teresa’s order was to not provide proper beds, but just little hammocks. There is a communal toilet where people have to defecate in presence of each other and the inmates are not allowed visits from their friends and relatives“.

Senior AAP leader from Tamil Nadu arrested after he threatened to kill government officials

The convener of Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Tamil Nadu unit has been arrested for threatening to kill Tamil Nadu’s government officials during the ongoing protests against Salem –Chennai expressway project, The Hindu has reported.

As detailed in a PTI report, the 277 KM long, eight lane expressway project will connect the cities of Salem and Chennai. It is being opposed by some farmers whose lands would need to be acquired. They have as a result also found supporters from some activists and politicians.

One such supporter was actor Mansoor Ali Khan. As per a New Minute report, the actor was arrested on 17 June after he commented that if the eight lane expressway project was implemented, he would kill eight people and go to jail.

AAP’s convener S.A.N. Vasigaran decided to come to the support of Khan and took things to the next level by saying that, “not just 8 people – we’re ever ready to kill 16 people“. This statement was made while he was speaking to the media. As per a Hindu report, the threat was given to government officials responsible for the project.

Possibly after realising that he made a mistake, he claimed that there was nothing wrong in his statement.

The police didn’t think so and following the shocking statement, the cops determined that Vasigaran had disturbed the state’s peaceful atmosphere and instigated the locals to violently protest against the planned expressway. The police also asserted that he posed a serious threat to the government officials involved in the project.

As a result of this, a case was filed against the AAP leader by village administrative official, and he was booked under charges like criminal intimidation, threats of injury to public servants, giving provocation with intent to riots.

Thus the police took action and he was arrested from his residence in Chennai on Wednesday. He was later produced before a magistrate in Vazhappadi, following which he was sent to a 15 days police custody.

Uttar Pradesh: Yogi government decides to set up cow shelters in 12 district jails across the state

The Uttar Pradesh government led by Yogi Adityanath has taken the decision to set up cow shelters in prisons across the state, reported India Today. The Yogi Adityanath government has allocated Rs 20 million for setting up cow shelters in 12 district jails across the state. Additionally, the government has decided to allocate Rs 81.6 crores to open gaushalas in 68 of the 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh.

The proposal to set up cow shelters was mooted by the government in the month of February. The idea was to utilize the extra manpower available in the prisons. The district jails of Meerut, Gorakhpur, Sultanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Balrampur, Noida, Firozabad, Kannauj, Agra, Barabanki, Sitapur and Raebareli have been chosen to open shelters that will house abandoned and old cows.

The officials have been given orders to take actions to set up the cow shelters at respective districts. The cow shelters will be spread over an area of 17,000 sq.ft.

It is also seen by some as a part of the process to reform the inmates, by giving economic opportunity to the prisoners. He said the construction of cow shelters was going to start soon in various districts. The prisoners will be given the responsibility of taking care of the cattle from feeding, cleaning to milking in addition to their assigned work in the premises.

The Gau Sevak Commission had earlier demanded to operate cow shelters in Provincial Armed Constabulary grounds (PAC) but was rejected by the home department.

The Uttar Pradesh government has given high priority to animal protection. Yogi Adityanath who is also the head of Gorakhpur Math is known for his affinity towards bovine animals. He has personally been monitoring the initiative as it is one of the most important issues for both the state and central government.
