Indian soldiers with a heart of gold: send back an 11 year old who accidentally crossed LoC with a box of sweets

In an overwhelming incident, an 11-year-old boy from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) was on Wednesday handed over to the Pakistani authorities, four days after he inadvertently crossed into the Indian side in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

Mohammad Abdullah was apprehended by the Army on 24th June in Degwar area of Poonch district and was immediately handed over to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, who then carried out the necessary formalities for his return.

The boy was released on humanitarian grounds considering his young age, and to help boost the confidence-building measures between India and Pakistan, the spokesman said.

The Pakistani boy was repatriated on Wednesday at the Chakan Da Bagh crossing point after the police completed the formalities for his repatriation and was sent back with a box of sweets and a set of new clothes. “The Indian Army stands by its ethos of being a humane force and maintains sensitivity while dealing with innocent civilians,” the spokesperson added.

This is not the first time the India Army has exhibited this laudable gesture. In a similar incident, way back in 2015, Sameer Kayani, an 11-year-old boy, son of Mohammad Rafiq, is a resident of Laswa area of Athmuqam in PoK was handed over to the Pakistan Army after he unknowingly crossed borders and ended up in India.

To make sure that he reached home safely, an urgent hotline message was sent to inform the Pakistan Army about his safety and well-being.

Several such incidents talking about the humanity of Indian soldiers have surfaced in the last few years. One such similar incident transpired two months back where Mohammed Zahid son of Mohammed Arif resident of Nakyal village in PoK, who was mentally ill, crossed over the de facto border on 22nd April. The army men who were deployed on LoC apprehended him and handed him over to police. A flag meeting was held and later the boy was handed over to the Pakistani army. He too was sent back with gifts, clothes and a box of sweets.

Rupee hits all-time low against the US dollar: why is it falling and what may it lead to

The India rupee fell to an all-time low of 69.03 against the US dollar on Thursday compared to its previous record low of 68.86 on November 24, 2016. The nosedive came while maintaining a 19-month low. This is the fourth consecutive day of fall for the rupee.

The things which have affected the rupee fall:

  1. India being a net importer of crude oil, rising crude oil price is not good for the country as it will impact current account deficit and put pressure on the rupee. Oil prices in the global market inched up with US crude futures rose $.23 to settle at $72.76 a barrel. Brent crude rose $1.31 to settle at $77.62 a barrel.
  2. Currency traders are worried about the future of global trade against the grim backdrop of an increasing trade rhetoric between the US and China.
  3. Foreign investors have been net sellers of Indian equities and debts this year so far putting pressure on the rupee.
  4. Further, on the trade front, concerns of a trade-war like situation between the US and other major economies such as China and the European Union also kept sentiments weak across markets.
  5. The currency market was nervous after RBI painted a gloomy picture of the banking sector in its bi-annual financial stability report.

Listed few points that how the weak rupee will affect you:

  1. While a weakening rupee will leave the Indian exporters smiling, importers, however, will feel the pain. According to latest government data, India’s trade deficit stood at $14.6 billion in May, 5.6 per cent higher than a year ago. A falling rupee will only widen this gap.
  2. Oil imports will get costlier, translating into higher fuel costs.
  3. The rupee downfall will expand India’s import bill and will eventually be contributing to the inflation. In a scenario, where inflation further goes up then there are chances that RBI may hike rates resulting in your EMIs outflow.
  4. The current low is also a bad news for students aspiring to study abroad, as lower rupee value will lead to higher education costs. Travelling out of India will also become expensive.

However, if any Indian owns any property on foreign land, then there’s a ray of hope as a weak rupee will increase the value of your investment.

Sins of the Fathers: Savio Rodrigues writes on sexual violence in churches and other religious institutions

Earlier this week, we had reported how five Kerala priests were accused of sexually harassing a married woman. Savio Rodrigues, former senior Congress leader from Goa, who resigned after the Goa election debauchery today expressed his shock and disgust at fact that a police complaint hasn’t been filed.

He took to Goa Chronicles, a publication he owns, to question whether Church is above the law of the land. His column has been produced here in totality with due permission.

I am shocked and absolutely disgusted to read media report about the horrible plight of a married woman in Kerala sexually abused by five priests of Malankara Orthodox Church. The priests used details of a confession (a religious sacrament of the Church which is highly confidential) to blackmail the woman to succumb to the sexual abuse.

These priests in the eyes of the people that follow the tenets of the Christian religion are ordained ministers who are to be channels of communications and graces of God. Yet in light of this heinous crime and the shadows of the numerous cases of child sexual abuses by priests globally one is left wondering about the responsibilities of the Church to its followers.

Since knowledge of the crime, the Malankar Orthodox Church has been conducting its own investigations on the allegations of the victim. Interestingly they have decided to not inform the local police authorities of such a serious sexual crime. In fact the Church opined through its spokesperson that it was inquiring into the allegations raised against some priests through the established procedures of the Church. He further stated, that the Church is conducting a clear, impartial inquiry into the allegations.

The question I would like to raise is that in an act of sexual violence – the religious character of the perpetrators being kept aside – does the Church or any religious institution have any right to conduct an independent inquiry and not report the matter to the local police authorities. Is the Church law above the law of the nation? This is clearly the point of defiance of the Church to conduct its own investigation before reporting the matter to the local police. The Church had claimed to have suspended the priests from performance of religious duties but that act in itself is such a hogwash because the truth is that they were asked to go on leave and not suspended. The truth of the matter is that the Church has no legal authority to decide the course of action against a crime, that is the duty of the law and order machinery of the nation.

The act of the Priests of the Church conducting this internal inquiry is condemnable and they must be charged with crime of failure to report this crime and deliberately obstruct the natural course of justice. The five priests responsible for the sexual abuse of the women, if found guilty of the allegations must be tried as rapists in the nation’s court of law.

It has now been learnt through media reports that the Church has passed the buck to lodge a complaint on the victim and her family with the local police station. Spokesperson for the Church told media that what is the need for them to go to the police as they have instituted an internal committee and are conducting an inquiry; we will not protect the priests if they are found guilty but we have to complete our inquiry. If the complainant wants to go the police, she can do so. We will complete our inquiry.

The Church has been in recent past has been known to cover-up its heinous crimes of sexual abuses by priests on children and not report the matter to local police authorities – this is a global phenomenon. It appears to be a similar precedent being followed in India. The audacity of the Church to not report the matter to the local police authorities raises serious questions on whether Indian laws are applicable to the crimes committed by the leaders of the Church. So far even after media reports, the local Kerala government and police have failed to take cognisance of the sexual abuse crime.

Interestingly one of the five accused priests belongs to the Archdiocese of Delhi according to media reports. Not to long ago the Archbishop Anil Couto of the Archdiocese of Delhi raised alarm bells that India’s democracy and constitution is under threat and we need to pray for a new government. I openly question the leaders of the Church in India and Archbishop Couto what is his stand as the leader of the Church on the allegations of this heinous crime and under what law of the constitution of this country does a sexual crime against a women has to first be investigated by a Church Internal Committee and not the local police authorities. Are not human rights of this lady trampled by the keepers of God’s word? Is it now a Christian under threat from a Christian religious leader? And most importantly will they condemn the crime like they condemned the alleged attack on democracy.

I am reminded of a beautiful verse in the Holy Bible to share with the Church leaders, “Not all who say Lord, Lord will enter the Kingdom of God but those who do the will of God”.

Savio Rodrigues, known for his extremely forthcoming views, had earlier also slammed Archbishop who appealed to ‘save India from nationalist forces’ and has been a very vocal critic of communal propaganda by the Catholic Church.

Delhi police likely to book Arvind Kejriwal for criminal conspiracy in Chief Secretary assault case

Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal might be heading for trouble in the Chief Secretary assault case after a Hindustan Times report has claimed that the Delhi police is likely to book him for criminal conspiracy in this matter. As per the report, a chargesheet would be filed at the Tis Hazari court in this regard by next week.

As per an India Today report, besides Kejriwal, Delhi’s deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and 11 other AAP MLAs are also likely to be part of the chargesheet.

On the stroke of midnight of 19 February, when the national capital slept, AAP MLAs were very much awake at Kejriwal’s residence to attend a meeting where Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash too was invited.

The meeting though bore witness to extraordinary scenes as when Prakash raised questions regarding AAP government’s excess spending on advertisements, Kejriwal’s aides got enraged and allegedly proceeded to assault him.

These version of events were also corroborated by Kejriwal’s aide VK Jain who was reported as claiming that he found AAP MLAs Amanatullah Khan and Prakash Jarwal assaulting the Chief Secretary, when he returned from a washroom break.

Even though Kejriwal has not yet been named as an accused in the FIR, or arrested for the matter, he has ended up getting questioned by the Delhi police on two occasions. One of the aspects which the Delhi police wanted to probe in this regards was whether the assault was pre-planned.

The news of the chargesheet filing incidentally comes a few days after Kejriwal staged a high profile dharna at the lieutenant governor’s residence, while alleging that IAS officers working under him were on a four month long strike, which started following the alleged assault on the chief secretary.

The IAS association though had rubbished these allegations and in turn asserted how victimised and threatened they were feeling.

Indira Awaas Yojana to be shut down in the government files, claims report

According to a report published by Economic Times, the Centre has written to all states asking for the latest housing figures for the ‘’closure’’ of the Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY), a rural housing scheme initiated by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi almost four decades ago. This indicates the official dismissal of one of the last schemes bearing the name of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in government files.

Launched in 1985, Narendra Modi government had restructured this scheme and renamed it as Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) from 1st April, 2016. Modi government had cited an Auditor General of India report in 2014 which pointed out deficiencies in the IAY such as – weak monitoring system, lack of transparency in the selection of the beneficiaries, low quality of houses and stated that PMAY-G would address these issues.

The IAY was not entirely scrapped from the government files as on the launching date of the new re-structured scheme April 1st, 2016, there were more than 30 lakh pending houses left to be constructed under IYA. Thus, Modi government chose to complete those with an added option for using funds from the PMAY-G scheme.

In the letter dated June 15th, the Centre has categorically asked the state to specify whether all the houses under the IAY were completed by March 31st, 2018. It also stated that all accounts under the former scheme are settled and brought to a closure. The IAY scheme is being closed in government files before the aimed completion of the Modi governments’ PMAY-G scheme, which seeks to complete one-crore rural houses by December 2019.

Earlier in 2015, Modi Government had knocked off names of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi from the annual awards given by the Home Ministry on Hindi Diwas for progressive use of Hindi in government.

Hindu refugees’ camp has no power, while Bangladeshi Basti has AC installed, Kapil Mishra releases video

AAP rebel leader Kapil Mishra has taken on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and accused him of removing the sole power connection in the Adarsh Nagar rehabilitation camp for Hindu refugees from Pakistan.

According to Mishra, about 600 Hindu refugees from Pakistan, including 140 kids and 7 infants are living in the national capital since past 22 days. He even released a video where it can be seen that the in the Bangladeshi basti across the road, has air conditioners installed.

As per reports in Zee News, the refugee camp is not even cleaned. AAP rebel leader Kapil Mishra has accused that the Hindu refugees are meted out this treatment because they are Hindu refugees and not Rohingyas.

He said that if they were Rohingyas, then the government would have come forward to help them settle in. Earlier, posters had come up in Delhi proclaiming Kejriwal as messiah of Muslims. Kejriwal has also been accused of trying to create a divide on communal lines. Not just that, a Hindu group had even accused AAP members of trying to create a communal tension by waving swords in front of a mosque.

Head of popular spiritual organisation refuses to give Rahul Gandhi VIP treatment as he doesn’t like his face

Pranav Pandya, the head of All-World Gayatri Pariwar – a spiritual organisation refused to extend VIP treatment to Rahul Gandhi as he ‘doesn’t like his face’, Indian Express has reported. This comment was made by Pandya on Wednesday, during a meeting with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in Haridwar.

As per Pandya, their organisation which claims to have a worldwide membership of 15 crore, has decided to support the BJP for the 2019 Lok Sabha. This announcement was made following BJP President Amit Shah’s meeting with Pandya on Sunday as part of the former’s Sampark for Samarthan campaign.

In the meeting which took place in Haridwar, Shah had sought Gayatri Pariwar’s support, following which the head stated that they would take a decision after reviewing the work done by the BJP government.

Since then not only has Pandya decided to lend support to the BJP, he also seems to have openly professed his animosity towards Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

A DNA report, which also carried Pandya’s statement, quoted him as saying that Rahul can come and visit if he wants but he won’t be received like Amit Shah was. He followed it up by possibly justifying it by stating that he doesn’t like Rahul’s face.

Incidentally, during his trip to Haridwar, Amit Shah had also held similar meetings with Juna Akhara chief Swami Avdheshanand Giri and Bharat Mata Mandir’s founder Swami Satyamitranand.

It remains to be seen whether they too end up professing a similar level of animosity towards Rahul Gandhi.

Yogi slams bigotry of Muslim invaders, says Aurangzeb forced Kashmiri Pandits to change their religion

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has come out all guns blazing against bigotry of Muslim invaders like Aurangzeb. He targeted Aurangzeb for his unjust policies and spoke about how the Mughal invader forcefully tried to change Kashmiri Pandits’ religion.

Yogi Adityanath, who was addressing a gathering of Banjaras in Lucknow, said how Aurangzeb tortured the Pandit community. He also said that a group of Kashmiri Pandits had met the ninth of the ten Sikh Gurus, Guru Tegh Bahadur, in Delhi and sought his help to avoid forceful religious conversions.

The chief minister said,“Kashmiri Panditon par jab Aurangzeb ka atyachar prarambh hua tha, Aurangzeb se mukti ke liye Kanshmiri Panditon ka ek group Guru Tegh Bahadur ke paas Delhi mein aata hai aur apni peeda batata hai ki jabardasti humara dharmantran ho raha hai, humein dabaya ja raha hai… apmanit kiya ja raha”

Earlier, Yogi Adityanath had also slammed the policies of Akbar while hailing the Rajput King of Mewar, Maharana Pratap for his role in India’s history. Yogi Adityanath spoke highly of Maharana Pratap’s bravery and persistence in fighting against his enemies. He had also said that Akbar was a foreigner and said that the Mewar king never accepted Akbar as the king as he was a ‘Turk who could not be trusted’.

There have been concentrated efforts to whitewash the crimes of Aurangzeb, one of the most brutal and fanatical of all Mughal kings and paint him as a misunderstood ruler. We had earlier written how Aurangzeb wasn’t really as secular as he is made out to be by his sympathisers. BJP MP Maheish Girri had also earlier referred to Aurangzeb as a terrorist.

The Road To New India : The Background

Before I share with you our observations during our travel, I feel its important to share some basics for the benefit of the readers. In fact, this is how we started our background research and data collection. Our intent and attempt was to concentrate on the smallest of information.

Introduction to the demographic profile of the North East Region

The pie-chart below details the geographical area of the North-Eastern region of India.

The following chart details the population distribution of the North-Eastern region.

Source: Here

If you observe on the left top the Macmahon line separates North East India from Tibet. This region is connected with the rest of India only through a narrow corridor in North Bengal, having an approximate width of 33 km on the eastern side and 21 km on the western side. This narrow corridor is popularly known as the “Siliguri neck” or the “Chicken’s neck”.

The North East Region shares border with Nepal, Bhutan and China in the north and Myanmar in the east and Bangladesh in the South West side of the region.

The North East Council

The North Eastern Council was formed by an Act of the Parliament of India. The intent behind this council was to have common and concentrated efforts with a single aim to ensure the development of the whole region. It consists of members from all 8 North East India states. Historically this large region and its people have suffered disturbances and low development of industries and jobs. Hence special efforts were needed to bring a dramatic change to the people. Due to the low level of industrial development, the overall progress was lagging. The region was unable to generate its own revenue for the time being to sustain developmental activities. Therefore North East Region (NER) has essentially depended on Central funding for development works. All the eight states in the NER are “Special Category States” whose Development Plans are centrally financed on the basis of 90% Grant and 10% Loan.

The land of interesting geography diversities was left at its own mercy despite the formation of such councils. All round and sustained efforts clearly lacked. I shall highlight how and why in the latter part of the series. Hardworking people, natural resources, tourism potential just remained potential and were never exploited.

There are special constitutional provisions governing this region. There are special provisions on fund allocation and use.

Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources:

In the year 1998 – 99 it was proposed that every Ministry should earmark a minimum of 10% of their budget for the North East region. It was decided that if the Ministry fails to utilize the funds then the amount will be transferred to a separate head called “Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources” and that ways the funds will remain earmarked for the North East region.

It is important to know how the projects are identified under Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources and then executed. The first step is that the specific states are asked to submit a priority list of projects with a short proposal or plan on each project. The focus area of the priority list is

  • Projects of economic infrastructure is given priority;
  • In the social sector, priority to drinking water supply and other health and sanitation projects;
  • Projects in Autonomous district Council (VIth Schedule of the Constitution) is given priority;
  • Past performance of a state in implementing projects in the particular sectors to which the projects belong is also considered;
  • The overall utilisation and absorption of funds by a particular state in the past years also guide the overall quantum of projects to be undertaken for that state in a year.

What all this ensured for us was that we had to radically redefine the way we approached our study and the expedition. We spent a considerable time in understanding the regional requirements, the various tribes, cultures, the governance models, funding allocation, aspirations of the local population and how the district councils, agencies, state governments interact with the Central government and so on and so forth.

The first article in this series detailed how this journey began. In my next article, I will be sharing our observation day wise along with snippets of videos and interviews that we conducted during the travel.
