TRS alleges Congress MLAs came to the assembly drunk after one of them injured the Council Chairman

0

The Telanagna assembly bore witness to violent scenes yesterday, after council chairman Swamy Goud was hospitalised for being injured in his eye, thanks to a headphone thrown by a Congress MLA. The MLA has reportedly been identified as Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, who had thrown the headphone at the podium while the national anthem was being played.

This attack supposedly was one of the aspects of the protest, which included congress legislators tearing and flinging papers, after accusing the ruing Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) government for being “anti-farmer”. The drama played out on the first day of the state’s budget session.

As per the injured Swamy Goud, headphones were flung during the governor’s address but they didn’t hit anybody. Things though weren’t as lucky the second time round, and when everyone stood for the national anthem another headphone was flung, which hit him in the eye.

Legislative affairs minister T Harish Rao called it an attack on democracy, and claimed that speaker Madhsudhana Chary, would decide on the action to be taken against the erring Congress MLAs.

Since then the intensity of the allegations have increased, and the TRS had alleged that the Congress MLAs came to the assembly while drunk.

As per Palla Rajeshwar Reddy, who is the TRS whip, owing to the inebriated state of the Congress MLAs, they resorted to violence like throwing headphones, paper balls and mikes at the council chairman, speaker and the governor.

He thus demanded that the Congress MLAs be arrested and that criminal proceedings be initiated against them. He even alleged that one of the drunk Congress MLAs fell on their leader Jana Reddy, this irked the latter who then proceeded to leave the assembly premises.

The Congress though has come out to refute this allegation. As per reports, opposition leader K Jana Reddy has strongly denied the allegations that the Congress MLAs were drunk. He also proceeded to “defend” their violent actions by claiming that government was trying to stifle the voice of the opposition in the assembly. He even claimed that his own right knee was “severely injured” after he was attacked by the police and marshals.

MCI bribery case : CJI Misra writes to the President regarding initiation of proceedings against Allahabad HC Judge

0

A reply to an RTI petition filed by Paras Nath Singh has revealed that the CJI has asked the government to initiate proceedings against the Allahabad High Court Judge, Narayan Shukla. Justice Shukla had allegedly used his office to provide temporary relief to a medical college run by Prasad education trust. The judgement had helped the education trust to admit students in spite of being derecognised by Medical Council of India. An in-house committee formed by the CJI had made adverse remarks against Justice Shukla as per media reports.

The education trust had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court and the matter had been heard by a bench led by Justice Dipak Misra in August 2017. The SC bench had asked the government to relook its order. After the revelations of bribery in Allahabad HC emerged during a CBI investigation, demand for an investigation of the SC bench had been made.

The RTI petitioner Paras Nath Singh had asked for a copy of the letter received by the President and details of file movement on the matter in President’s secretariat. He had also asked for details of the procedure followed by the President in dealing with this matter.

It remains to be seen as to how the matter will be dealt by the government in the days to come.

Uttarakhand cabinet approves draft bill to make forced religious conversions a non-bailable offence

0

The Uttarakhand state cabinet has approved the draft bill called ‘Dharm Swatantrata Adhiniyam‘ under which forced and illegal conversions will be a non-bailable offence. The state government is aiming to curb the incidences of religious conversions by means of force, bribes or incentives and duping. Under this bill, a person, if caught with being involved in such practice will have to face a jail term from one year to five years. The minimum jail term will be two years if the victims belong to SC or ST category.

According to reports, if a person wants to convert voluntarily, he/she will have to submit an affidavit with the respective District Magistrate one month prior, in order to clarify that the conversion is voluntary and not forced.

Any conversions, if found not to have followed the above will be invalidated and considered illegal by the government. If a person wants to convert for the purpose of marriage, he/she will also have to submit the same affidavit.

The Trivendra Singh Rawat led state cabinet convened for four hours on different issues on Monday in the state assembly. Under this bill, even organised events for religious conversions will be illegal if not notified to the government one month prior.

The government’s decision is in line with the order of the Uttarakhand High Court in November last year when the bench headed by Justice Rajiv Sharma had suggested that the state government should formulate the Freedom of Religion Act to check the practice of religious conversion for the sole purpose of facilitating a marriage. The HC had asked the state government to legislate a law on the analogy of the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act 1968 and the Himachal Freedom of religion act 2006.

A bench headed by Justice Rajiv Sharma had said, “It needs to be mentioned that the court has come across a number of cases where inter-religion marriages are being organised. However, in few instances, the conversion from one religion to another religion is a sham conversion only to facilitate the process of marriage. In order to curb this tendency, the state government is expected to legislate the Freedom of Religion Act on the analogy of Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1968 as well as Himachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2006, without hurting the religious sentiments of citizens.”

Under the bill, the immediate family members of the concerned person who has been converted can register a case.

NIA recovers Jihadi material, Pakistani flag and mobile phones during its raid on Srinagar Central Jail

The NIA on Monday raided the Srinagar Central Jail along with the J&K police, CRPF and NSG commandos and in the process managed to recover Jihadi material, a Pakistani flag and 25 mobile phones. The recovered material included a Hizbul Mujahideen poster:

In total, about 20 teams of the NIA raided the premises while using drones to carry out surveillance. Apart from mobile phones, electronic items like SD cards, SIM cards, an iPod and pen drives. Other items included posters of slain terrorist Burhan Wani, diaries containing phone numbers of Pakistani handlers, screwdrivers and knives were also recovered.

The raid started early morning and continued until late afternoon and involved a thorough search all the barracks and open grounds.

This raid was carried out on the basis of a tip-off that Kashmiri youths were being radicalised from inside these jails and were later sent to Pakistan for arms training purposes. As per NIA spokesperson Inspector General Alok Mittal, this information was gathered after interrogating two Pulwama youths Danish Ghulam Lone and Sohail Ahmed Bhat, who were arrested while trying to cross over to Pakistan in October 2017.

These youths during the interrogation revealed that they were in contact with Hizbul Mujahideen commander Riyaz Naikoo, owing to their willingness to join the organisation. Naikoo, as a result, directed them to Mohammad Ishaq who was lodged in the Srinagar Central Jail. Ishaq later allegedly stayed in touch with the duo via mobile phones while being inside the jail, during which he indoctrinated them and also arranged a passage for them to POK.

The Srinagar Central Jail had attained notoriety recently after it was exposed as being a “paradise for terrorists”. The report alleged that the prison inmates enjoyed the possession of smartphones and were eating well, thanks to Kashmiri mutton delicacies like wazwan. It was alleged that rules were openly flouted, without much intervention by the authorities.

The flouting included a terrorist regularly giving a press release and another top terrorist getting visited by hoards of devotees who considered him to be some form of a godman.

This expose had resulted in a crackdown which involved two prominent prisoners Qasim Faktoo and Shafi Shareati getting shifted to Jammu jails. This angered separatists who then called for a shutdown in the valley to protest against this move.

Here’s how TMC is reading the Tripura election results all wrong

0

Lenin has been uprooted in Tripura bringing an end to two and a half decade of the communist rule in the state.

Last few days have seen fervent reactions from different political quarters, right from Sitaram Yechury blaming everything under the sun other than the misrule of his party for such a debacle to veteran party leader V S Achuthanandan urging the party leadership to join hands with secular forces to fight the Sangh Parivar. Quite understandably Sitaram Yechury is putting up a brave face in a scenario where the Communists of India are Left in just one state and by that, I don’t mean Kerala but the  “dilapidated state” they seem to be in.

Lenin is symbolic of the communist rule in Tripura which left the populace in abject poverty and encouraged a culture of violent politics in the state. Lenin was that giant tree for the state of Tripura. With the fall of Lenin, the earth shook and the worst effect of the tremors was felt in Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal. She reacted to the verdict and tried to play it cool, but the panic was evident because if Mamata Banerjee is defending the Left, any political observer would realise that there is something extremely unusual. One simple reason behind the panic is the fact that this time the epicentre of the political earthquake was quite close, not just geographically but culturally and politically as well.

Statements made by her and her lieutenant Derek O’Brien in the last couple of days made me dive deep in the Tripura Results.

Mamata blamed the Congress party for this defeat and remarked that if Rahul Gandhi would have chosen All India Trinamool Congress as alliance partner then the results would have been different in Tripura. In the light of this statement, I would like to present some facts which might bring some perspective to her statement.

TMC (Trinamool Congress) contested 24 Seats in Tripura (seat of Charilam where elections will take place on 15th excluded) and the biggest challenger for TMC in all these 24 seats is not BJP or CPIM not even Congress. Voila! It’s NOTA (None of the Above). NOTA has 8,752 votes in these 24 seats put together, the TMC has 6,989. Forget BJP, if TMC would have contested against NOTA they would have lost there as well. If we dig further, we find that in a straight fight with NOTA, TMC would have lost 18 out 24 Seats, so much so that TMC would have lost the seat where they have got maximum votes, that is 435 votes in Joliabari because NOTA polled 479 votes there. This was the story as far as TMC standalone is concerned.

Mamata Banerjee spoke of Congress+TMC. The combined votes of INC+TMC is at an average of 4% of the votes which the winners polled irrespective of whether its Left or BJP. I reiterate that it’s 4% of winner’s votes, not the total votes cast in a constituency. Finally, as a garnishing touch, we can also note that INC and TMC together would have lost 4 seats to NOTA namely Ashrambari, Bagma, Chawamanu and Hrishyamukh and would have barely scraped through in another 4.

Going a step further, I created a hypothetical “Mahagatdbandan” in Tripura comprising of CPI(M) + INC + TMC. Even then, the final result of Tripura elections would have been almost same. BJP+IPFT would still be forming the government with 41 MLAs as in this scenario BJP might have lost Nalchar Seat by 143 Votes and Panisagar by 243 Votes. I completely acknowledge the fact that in case of a Mahagatbandhan, things won’t have added mathematically but it could have been worse for anti-BJP forces because that could have created a counter ‘Mahagatbandhan’ of voters.

On the other hand, if there would have a swing of mere 450 Votes in favour of BJP the tally would have been BJP + IPFT – 46 –  CPI(M) – 13 since BJP lost Bagbassa, Chandipur and Manu by less 450 Votes.

Interestingly, Amra Bangalee Party, a relatively unknown party from Tripura, got a total of 5,646 votes compared to TMC’s 6,989 votes in the state. TMC got Whopping 24% more votes than its competitor in this contest.

However, these numbers and data can only be crunched once the election is over, what needs to be looked into is the decisive shift of voters towards BJP-IPFT alliance. First of all, it shifted from all parties towards NDA alliance and not just from the Left. So, yearning for better living condition propelled this shifting of votes across ideological affiliations.

From the results, it’s evident that it was positive polling for the “change” promised by NDA coupled with the complete disillusionment from “charity model of development”. This change momentum was riding on the back of first-time voters aligned with what the NDA was promising. BJP scored big there, as it had several examples to showcase like Gujrat, Madhya Pradesh Rajasthan and now U.P as well. BJP with immense hard work created an on-ground organisational structure which could reap the benefit of such anti-incumbency and convert that sentiment into votes.

It was a polarised election and when I say that I don’t refer to the communal polarisation, I’m talking about ideological polarisation between status quo of CPIM vs the verifiable developmental agenda of the BJP.

Why is the TMC leadership so nervous?

This is the first time in Indian political history that the Left has been so crushingly defeated by the Right Wing. Traditionally, Left has always been replaced by Centrist Parties which we have seen in Kerala, Tripura and West Bengal in past. If one could read the signals right, BJP is positioning itself as a more progressive alternative to Left than current TMC, which means they plan to do a Tripura in Bengal. Feedback from Bengal suggests that BJP is working hard to achieve this.

It is high time TMC and its leaders understand that people cannot be fooled, nor can they be threatened. They should stop belittling the mandate of people in smaller states. India is made up of 29 states with very diverse cultural and political realities and thus every mandate is significant.

Tripura saw BJP taking over a fort ruled by the Left, a fort that sends 2 MP’s and constitutes 0.3% of the populations. If TMC does not take corrective action, next fort will be the state which sends 42 MPs and has 7.5% of Indian population.

The Bharatiya Janata Party and the great Maratha Empire: Will history repeat itself again?

0

Almost 280 years after Peshwa Balaji Bajirao’s raid of Delhi, the BJP plans to conduct a Mahayagya to protect the country from the forces that seek to do it harm. The Mahayagya seems to have been consciously organized during the same period of the year in which the famed Peshwa marched to Delhi in 1737 in the month of March. Interestingly, another 5-day event is being planned in April on the lawns of the Red Fort titled ‘Hindu samrajya ki gauravgatha’ by the Raja Shivchhatrapati Mahanatya Aayojan Samiti.

There is a good reason for the celebration of the life and times of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj all of a sudden. The Legendary Maratha King can be credited with the founding of the last pan-Indian empire in the Indian subcontinent. The celebration of his life is, thus, an ode to the heritage and the history of our nation. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s devotion to the Maratha empire, which is in stark contrast to the negligence of it by the high and mighty of the Congress party, is an allusion to the BJP’s acknowledgement of what it perceives to be its position in history and its vision of the party’s mission for the future of our civilisation.

One of the most iconic images of Narendra Modi’s tenure as the Prime Minister of India is him addressing the public from the pulpit as a grand statue of the great Maratha king looked on contently. Narendra Modi shares certain commonalities with Shivaji Maharaj. Like the Maratha King, Narendra Modi is a Shakta Upasaka. Shivaji Maharaj was a devotee of Maa Bhavani and Prime Minister Modi is a devotee of Maa Bagalamukhi. When Chhatrapati Shivaji embarked upon his mission of establishing Hindavi Swaraj, almost all of India was under the rule of the Mughals. His arrival on the scene gave Hindus across the length and breadths of Bharatvarsha a great hope, a hope for a new dawn. Similarly, when Narendra Modi arrived on the national scene, the ebb of Dharma was at a historical low. There was a general sense of hopelessness in the nation and with Narendra Modi came the hope for better days, a hope for the dawn of a new era of prosperity. Of course, there can be no comparison between the abilities and achievements of the two. Any modern day politician, for all their achievements and even if they were doubled or quadrupled, will only appear a dwarf before the great Shivaji Raje.

After the thumping victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, many people had remarked on the uncanny similarity between the map of the states of India ruled by the saffron party and that of the Maratha Empire at its peak. A certain Hindu intellectual on Twitter had noticed the similarities between the map of the Maratha Empire and the electoral seats won by the NDA in the Lok Sabha elections on the date of the pronouncement of results itself.

We are living in very interesting times. As @ArmchairPseph pointed out on Twitter, in Turkey, we have a President who fashions himself after the Sultans of the Ottoman Empire. In Russia, we have Vladimir Putin who is effectively a neo-Czar. In our neighbourhood, we have a new Emperor in China. Is it only a matter of time before an Indian politician treads a similar path? As Samuel Huntington rightly predicted, with the end of the Cold War and with the rise of the Asian nations, our ancient and medieval history will assume greater significance than it ever has at any time after the second world war. Even ten years ago, if someone had made the suggestion that there was a political party in India which fashioned itself as the ideological inheritor of the great Maratha Empire and wanted to tread the path that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had once bravely forged, we would have scoffed at him and branded him delusional. But with all the developments happening across the world, it gets more difficult with every passing day to treat such a decision with derision.

On its 69th Republic Day, India witnessed the tableau of Maharashtra pay tribute to the founder of the Maratha Empire with a representation of the coronation of the King. The coincidences are far too many to be considered random. Of course, one could say that it’s merely political rhetoric meant to whip up the fervour of nationalism already raging in the country. However, there is a certain ideological fortitude that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh commits itself to, however misplaced it may be, and the Bharatiya Janata Party, with its plethora of leaders who swear by Hindutva. Under such circumstances, it is extremely early to dismiss the numerous odes being paid to the Maratha empire as mere political posturing.

As I have mentioned several times in my previous articles, we are living in an age of chaos. And the events of the next two or three decades will determine the course of the world for the next couple of centuries at the very least. And for our Hindu Civilization, the next few decades will determine whether we will forfeit more land and fade away into the museums of the future or ensure our survival for many generations to come as a living, breathing civilization. For the good or bad, the Bharatiya Janata Party in general and Narendra Modi, in particular, will play a critical role in determining the future of Hinduism in the Indian subcontinent.

Read why BJP is restricting membership for six months in Tripura

Following the BJP’s miraculous victory in Tripura in the recently concluded Assembly elections, Sunil Deodhar, the man who played a key role in BJP’s win, has said that the party will stop recruiting workers from other parties in a bid to prevent people with a criminal history to be recruited in the party.

Condemning demolition of communist leader Lenin’s statue in Tripura, Deodhar, in a press event in Pune, accused communist workers of conducting violence while wearing t-shirts with Prime Minister Modi’s photograph to scare people off. In a bid to stop the ‘political goondaism’ in the state, BJP Tripura has decided to stop recruiting party cadres.

Deodhar further said that several communist workers have minted money through various government schemes under the previous 25-year long communist rule led by Manik Sarkar. Now with the change in government, such activities would stop, drying out their financial sources. Hence they will look at joining the party in power, BJP. Accusing many of these workers of having a criminal background, Deodhar said that new members will be added only after a thorough background check has been conducted on them.

He alleged that under the previous government 67% people of the state were living below poverty line and crime against women as well as the overall crime had gone up in the state, which had angered people. He further added that Biplab Kumar Deb led government in Tripura will focus on bringing about law and order and creating employment opportunities as well as building infrastructure.

Kerala Cardinal in deep trouble after police files case against him for shady land deals

0

The Kochi police on Monday, filed a case against Cardinal George Alencherry, head of Syro–Malabar church who along with three others has been accused of shady land deals. The other accused include, two priests Joshy Puthuva, Sebastian Vadakkumpadan and Saju Varghese Kunnel, a real estate broker involved in the land deals.

These charges come after the Kerala High Court had directed the police to do the same, after observing that prima facie there was enough evidence about the land deals involving criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and misappropriation of money.

This case pertains to the Cardinal been accused of favouring a middleman who sold Church land worth 27 crores for a price of 13 crores. In spite of selling below its market value, the Church had received only 9.3 crores. In his defence, the Cardinal had claimed that the balance had remained unpaid due to demonetisation. In total, reports have speculated that the church has lost about 93 crores.

The Cardinal has now been booked under sections 120B, 406, 415 and 420 of the IPC. These sections pertain to crimes like cheating, dishonesty, criminal breach of trust and criminal conspiracy.

As per the reports, even though a case has been filed against the the accused, the action taken would depend on the outcome of appeal moved against the singe bench’s order in the High Court.

This whole episode regarding the church lands has in recent days snowballed into a big controversy.

It was reported on Friday, how Kerala priests had outright demanded the resignation of the Cardinal and had even protested in front of his home. The Cardinal though has found support in form of four bishops who are part of his Church’s permanent Synod, and now of about 200 supporters.

Earlier while the Kerala High Court was hearing the matter, the Cardinal had decided to brazen things out by claiming that only the Pope could punish him under Canon law. The High Court promptly retorted that the Pope had no jurisdiction in India.

Karnataka Congress claims dubious budget allocations and utilisation figures for BJP’s flagship schemes

0

The social media team of Congress has been time and again exposed for their misinformative and misleading tweets. Many times they have even been known to propagate outright lies. 2 days ago, they came up with another claim. That the fund utilisation under several of the central government’s flagship scheme has been only 21.2%.

They overlooked a fundamental aspect of giving data for percentage of utilisation of funds – time period. Interestingly the Congress’s claim does not specify the time period for which they have come up with the statistics of 21.2%.

Moreover, while one looks at the schemes they have mentioned in the tweet, the total budget outlay for them has been significantly higher. The Congress tweet does not mention whether their claim is for total allocation so far or for the current fiscal or for the last fiscal year. Even if one tries all the three possibilities and attempts to find any truth in the claim, their claim doesn’t add up.

For example, if we look at the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme, from its conceptualisation till date, the total fund outlay for this scheme alone has been over 50,000 crores as per the information on the AMRUT website.

On Budget day this year, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had stated that the total Budget allocation for the Smart Cities Mission which has 99 cities selected is 2.04 lakh crores. Also, Congress party erroneously forgets to mention that utilisation of fund for the smart city is a job to be taken up by the state government as the amount doled out by the centre is matched in equal measure by the state.

As for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY), according to the 2018 budget outlay for PMAY Grameen (rural) alone was at 33,000 crores while the outlay for PMAY (urban) was given at 31,500 crores. According to reports, The target of PMAY (Rural) is to complete 10 million new houses by March 31, 2019. Of these, 5.1 million units have to be completed by March 31, 2018. Even by this standard, the fund allocation mentioned by Congress seems absurd.

For Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) a sum of 33,000 crores has been allocated till 2017 and in the 2018 union budget, the FM announced the allocation of funds amounting to Rs 17,843 crores in the union budget. Statistics say (as on 22nd December 2017) :

Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) is a demand driven scheme and in the financial years 2014/15 & 2015/16 amount utilised exceeded the amount of funds being released; however in 2016/17, 95 per cent of the funds released were utilised. In the year 2017/18, Rs 9,582.2 crore has been released and Rs 6,981.9 has been utilised, translating into around 73 per cent utilisations (as on December 22).

The amount allocated mentioned by the Congress tweet hence fails to provide the correct data. The BJP, however, came up quickly to mock the Congress for their claim and called it a juvenile lie.

Even if one tends to assume the Congress claim of allocation was for the current fiscal year, the claim of 21.2% utilisation still looks questionable because it has been just more than a month since the announcement of the union budget. The Congress, however, has not come up with an explanation on the data they have provided yet.
