How cosmic justice was delivered to a burqa clad terrorist as he tried to escape police custody

0

In what can be said as Karma at play, a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist, who was escaping from the custody of police in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, was killed by the grenade which was thrown at the police to help him escape. A policeman was injured in the blast and the slain terrorist has been identified by cops as 24-year-old Mushtaq Chopan. Earlier in February, two cops were killed when Pakistani LeT terrorist Naveed Jati alias Abu Hanzullah escaped from the police custody when he had been brought to Srinagar’s SMHS hospital for a medical check-up.

Chopan was wearing a ‘burqa’ to escape and the police are investigating how the burqa made its way to the police station. Two women had met Chopan hours before the grenade attack, and the police are suspecting these women’s involvement in passing on the burqa. A Magisterial enquiry has been initiated under Sec 176 CrPC, while the Jammu Kashmir Police has launched its own enquiry to look into the lapse.

This incident reportedly caused intense clashes between crowds and security forces along the streets of Tral area. Police had to resort to tear gas to disperse the stone-pelting mob.

Last year, burqa-clad Hizbul terrorists had stormed Jammu and Kashmir Bank and looted Rs. 5.2 lakh at gunpoint, before making an escape.

SIT commissioned to probe Mulayam Singh Yadav for threatening a senior police officer in 2015

0

In what might sound as trouble for Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, a Special Investigative Team (SIT) has been commissioned by SSP Deepak Kumar for investigating the matter of Mulayam Singh threatening an IPS officer. This decision was taken after deliberations with Abhay Kumar Mishra, the Circle officer Hazratganj, who is leading the investigation into the matter. Anil Kumar Yadav, the Circle officer of Barazkhala would be leading the SIT.

The case dates back to 2015 when the IPS officer Amitabh Thakur had filed an FIR against Mulayam over charges of the SP supremo threatening him via phone call on 10th July 2015. As per Amitabh, Mulayam was miffed with him due to his activist wife filing a complaint against a corrupt minister of the SP government.

Apart from allegedly being threatened, Amitabh also suffered at the hands of the SP government which suspended him and also served him a 16 point charge sheet. The police had incidentally resisted from filing the FIR against Mulayam, which had elicited a protest by Amitabh. The SP supremo was finally booked under section 506 of the IPC which pertains to criminal intimidation.

The main purpose of the five-member SIT is to take Mulayam’s voice sample. A court on 20th August 2016 had directed that the same be done but the prosecuting agencies had failed to procure it. In July of last year, it was reported that Mulayam had openly refused to give his voice sample regarding this matter. and it remains to be seen how cooperative he is this time around.

Besides this, Mulayam might also get into trouble for ordering a firing “Kar Sewaks” in Ayodhya back on 30th October 1990, while being the Chief Minister of UP. These Kar Sewaks had assembled in the city for carrying out a peaceful agitation for the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. It was reported that a petition had been filed in the Supreme Court which sought that an FIR is filed against Mulayam Singh Yadav regarding this matter.

Delhi HC sets up 2 Special Courts for quick resolution of cases against MPs and MLAs

0

Delhi High Court has directed the setting up of 2 Special Courts to deal with cases against elected representatives of the Parliament and the Assembly. The notice directs all cases pending against MPs and MLAs to be transferred to the said Courts by the 1st of March. The cases would be put on fast track and attempt will be made to dispose of them within one year.

The decision comes after the Supreme Court had ordered 12 fast track courts for cases against MPs and MLAs to be made functional by the 1st of March. The order came after the Center filed an affidavit proposing to set up 12 courts for the said purpose. The law ministry said in the affidavit, “As per the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, it is proposed to have 12 special courts with an estimated expenditure of Rs 7.80 crore over a period of one year to dispose of all cases involving political persons.” The Supreme Court had passed the directions while hearing a PIL filed by BJP spokesperson Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay.

Special CBI Judge Arvind Kumar and Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal, of the Patiala House Courts, will preside over the special courts. “The acting chief justice and judges of this court have further been pleased to order that the cases pending against MPs/MLAs in different courts be transferred to these two courts before March 1 and to put such cases on fast track and endeavour be made to dispose of the same within one year,” the administrative order passed by the Delhi High Court said.

Child Rights Panel recommends bringing Madarsas and Missionary schools under RTE

0

The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has recommended that minority schools should be included under the Right to Education Act. The Commission is concerned with the quality of education being provided in Madarsas, they believe the children studying in them are “as good as out-of-school” kids.

NCPCR member Priyank Kanoongo told The New Indian Express, “The irony is that while missionary schools follow fundamental syllabi like normal schools and have become elitist, Madaras are just imparting religious education and are meant for marginalised and deprived sections—but they both enjoy some exemptions from RTE provisions.”

The RTE is perceived to be sectarian by many sections of the Hindu community who believe the Act severely handicaps their ability to compete effectively with missionary schools in the education sector. Thousands of schools have been forced to shut down due to the RTE, an all of them run the majority community, as minorities are exempted from the RTE Act.

Last year, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat had said, “RTE Act is applicable to majority-run institutes and not minority institutes. As a result, it has become difficult for non-minority institutes to operate. Minority institutes get money and increase their income. Laws and rules are strange and they should be changed.”

Earlier in January, the NCPCR had recommended the mapping of minority schools due to the lack of data about the number of students studying in Madarsas and missionary school.

Jammu and Kashmir exam paper refers to PoK as ‘Azad Kashmir’, question setting ‘expert’ blacklisted

0

A question on the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board’s exam referred to Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) as “Azad Kashmir”. Following outrage on social media, the chairman of the board, Simrandeep Singh, has nullified the question and ordered an inquiry on the same. Pakistan refers to the part of Kashmir which is under its illegal occupation, as ‘Azad Kashmir’.

The question read, “Jammu and Kashmir has an international border with China in the north and east, and the Line of Control separates it from the Pakistan-controlled territories of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan in:

a) north and north-east respectively
b) south and south-east respectively
c) east and north-east respectively
d) west and north-west respectively”

Singh has said that the ‘expert’ who framed the question has been blacklisted. The question has since been nullified.

BJP slaps long term suspension on Bihar leader accused of mowing down 9 schoolkids with his car

0

The BJP has slapped a six-year suspension on its Bihar leader accused of running over nine schoolkids with his car in the Dharampur village of Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district on Saturday. The leader Manoj Baitha as per CCTV reports was driving the car when it spun out of control while trying to save a woman hit by a truck. All the nine schoolkids lost their lives.

The leader who has gone absconding since the incident, and has had charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder slapped against him. He as per reports escaped with his driver soon after the accident.

After the incident, BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi had ordered the police to carry out the strictest action against Baitha. Modi also asserted that no mercy should be shown to those taking the life of innocents.

The party now seems to have followed up on its condemnations and has suspended Baitha from its primary membership for six years:

The Nitish Kumar government has already announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the schoolkids’ next of kin and has decided to bear the medical expenses of 24 others who have been injured in this incident.

It has been alleged that the BJP leader was intoxicated at the time of the accident, even though stringent prohibition has been imposed in the state.

Mohammed Ansari who lost five of his grandchildren in the incident filed a case against Baitha on Sunday where he alleged that the leader clad in white kurta-pyjama fled after hitting the schoolkids. He also claimed that CCTV footage proved that the BJP leader was indeed behind the wheel of the Bolero when the incident took place.

As per initial reports, this incident took place at about 1:30 PM on Saturday when the kids were returning home from the school located near NH 77. The kids mainly belonged to daily workers and marginal farmers who had been demanding that the school be relocated away from the highway.

The protesters also blocked traffic for several hours on the route and vandalised infrastructure including that of the school’s.

ED to start the process of identifying and seizing Nirav Modi’s overseas assets in 6 countries

0

The Enforcement Directorate was allowed a plea to seize Nirav Modi’s properties located in six different countries on Monday. The ED had approached a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court to attach properties of the PNB bank Fraud accused spread in six countries. The court has allowed the plea seeking the Letter Rogatory (LRs) to the relevant authorities in six countries to aid the ED to identify and seize the properties.

The six countries are Hong Kong, USA, UK, South Africa, Singapore and UAE. Lawyer Hiten Venegaokar appealed to the PMLA court on behalf of ED. The ED has reasons to believe that certain parts of the proceeds of the PNB Fraud or even property involved in money laundering are located in these six countries.

Special Judge M S Azmi allowed the plea. The ED will also collect documents and other evidence pertaining to the Nirav Modi’s fraud case with this authorisation. The LRs will now be sent to the competent authorities of the countries through the Ministry of External Affairs. By the LRs the ED is also authorised to hold inquiries in the respective countries.

The PNB Fraud came to light two weeks ago when the Punjab National Bank issued a letter highlighting unauthorised LoUs being issued and Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi were believed to have cheated the bank of about 1.7 billion US dollars. Earlier today news reports came that stated the total amount might be 1300 crores rupees more than the initial estimates.

The ED has been swift in attaching Nirav Modi’s properties and accounts in this case. Several of his showrooms and offices have been raided in the past two weeks and most of his properties and those belonging to his wife and brother have been attached by the agency. The CBI has also arrested the bank employees involved in the scam and several high officials in Nirav Modi’s companies.

With the court’s authorisation, the ED is now expected to move to the six countries to further seize Nirav Modi’s properties there. Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi are still absconding. Their passports have been revoked by the Ministry of External Affairs.

Rahul Dravid’s gesture towards the U -19 support staff wins hearts of his fans

0

Rahul Dravid fondly known as ‘The Wall’ was winning hearts of fans for his gutsy innings when he was an active cricketer. He has retained his charming spell over his fans even after retiring from his cricket career.

The under 19 coach for team India has been getting accolades for his gentleman and humble behaviour after the team won the world cup. After the victory of the U-19 team in the world cup, he refused to take all the credit for the team’s victory. He said

It’s embarrassing that I get a lot of credit & attention around whole team’s success. There are a lot of members of the support staff who have been equally valuable & wonderful bench of players.

After the victory too, Dravid has retained his grace. When BCCI decided to reward him with 50 lakhs, and rest of the staff with 30 lakhs and 20 lakhs amounts. Dravid asked the board to reduce his pay and reward all members with same money for the team’s victory. As per the revised reward structure, all support staff will now be getting 25 lakh reward for the team’s success at the U-19 world cup.

“From the time the award was announced, Dravid wasn’t happy with him getting much more than others. He informed the Board that he felt that every member had played an equal role in the team winning the World Cup. It surprised many in the BCCI that he was ready to take a cut in his own earning,” a BCCI board member told India Today.

As a result of Dravid’s intervention, the list of support staff eligible for the reward has been extended and the family of a trainer who passed away on duty with the team will also receive the reward money. This has brought cheer to the support staff and Dravid’s fans. Dravid continues to be one of the best representatives of the gentleman’s game on the field as well as off the field.

TISS protests: How students are being made pawn for political propaganda

0

A couple of days back, an article “JNU like protests at TISS in Mumbai – how political propaganda works on campuses” was published on the user generated chapter “My Voice” of OpIndia. The writer mentioned that the ongoing student ‘protest’ has been completely hijacked by people with vested interests. Some pictures of the protest site, the banners, and the messages were also shared in the article. They presented a very strong case on how the protest has shifted towards achieving a larger political objective. In this light, the real issue seems to have become an excuse and the real plight of the students in the need for student aid seems to have taken a back-seat.

Being a student at TISS, I got to hear about the article through my social media network. The article was shared by a former professor of TISS on Facebook. He commented “The article makes some sense. Do read it”. Subsequently, the article spread itself through Facebook and Whatsapp groups. It, naturally, made student union quite uneasy and upset. I have been told that the writer was urged (not directly by the Student Union) to take down the article.

I can see that now the writer has hidden his name and profile on the article. I remember there was a Twitter handle given too, which has been made ‘private’ by the writer. Such is the fear of speaking something leftist unions don’t want to hear. But I remembered the writer’s name, and a google search of the writer would land me to an InsideIIM article. Here, the writer claims that he took admission to TISS after rejecting the offers from IIM Kozhikode and IIFT Delhi. This was against the advice and wishes of his parents due to his belief in the ‘spirit’ of TISS. This point merits consideration.

I do not know what he thinks of this ‘spirit’ now, given the sequence of events that have occurred.  A very uncomfortable truth I have observed that people stand for ‘freedom of expression’, only when it follows certain terms and conditions. The proponents of the jumla of ‘dissent’ get furious when someone else dissents their way of doing things. So, ‘dissent’ as a word is just another fancy or so-called ‘progressive’ word which is being used for their convenience. I will take the liberty of labeling such characters as “professional dissenters” and nothing more.

Allow me to throw light on the issue (Mudde ke baat karte hain). The earlier article did not throw sufficient light on the issue at hand. Hence, I will try and explain the entire picture. Firstly, let us consider the charter of demands which was given to the administration by the students who are on strike.

Following is what the union is demanding (you can click on the images and zoom in if the text size appears small):

charter of demand by TISS student union - 1

charter of demand by TISS student union - 2

charter of demand by TISS student union - 3

charter of demand by TISS student union - 4

A point to be considered here is that the GOI-PMS scholarship (provided by any state) is typically sufficient to cover only the academic expenses of higher education. Meeting dining hall (Mess) and Hostel charges will require additional scholarships. Consider the text marked in Red above, which is quoting the administration.

The administration is here is talking about TISS Scholarships – a student aid which is funded by TISS itself. Till now, GOI-PMS scholarship holders were excluded from this scheme. The admin is now offering to extend it to ALL students (including GOI-PMS scholarship holders) irrespective of their social background. The eligibility to be decided is on the basis of the economic condition. As I will explain later, the doubts raised by student union on the ceiling of the scholarship eligibility are not entirely feasible.

What administration has proposed has the solution to many of the current issues. Students can pay their academic fees through these ‘TISS Scholarships’ and pay their Dining and Hostel charges with the scholarship they get from GOI-PMS. Students who are eligible for GOI-PMS are definitely eligible for ‘TISS Scholarships’ as it based on economic category. Also, if institute and students properly collaborate to get a fund institutionalized in which corporates and alumni can be requested to donate some funds, then this problem can be addressed even more effectively. The corporate donation is very important for any institution in the long run (we can see at Harvard, Stanford or MIT).

Added on to that, even General Category students will also be benefited by this ‘TISS Scholarship’. So, it’s a win-win situation for all! (Well, except for some student union members who are acting as stooges of their political affiliations)

Let us consider the argument “Giving scholarships on the basis of the economic category is a flawed concept because ‘how would panel decide who is vulnerable and in need of financial aid?’” as put by the students union. This can be assessed with Income Certificates, similar to the extant process for GOI-PMS scholarships. Also, this is true that many students who get their scholarships in their own account after the DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer i.e. subsidy/aid/grants directly in bank accounts) implementation do not give back that scholarship for their fees and many such students have already graduated from the college with their degrees.

I also belong to a ‘backward class’ (both economically and socially). I have completed my graduation on scholarships. Therefore, I completely appreciate the importance of Financial Assistance. My heart goes out to all my fellows from the marginalized sections (economic and/or social), who are being used as pawns in the name of caste and class by Student Union and some professors to further their own agenda.

What is happening in my assessment is pure politics. The student union is involved and so are some faculty members. Some of them are very vocal and transparent about their political affiliations and their political party membership. That they have enjoyed influential positions on government bodies is public knowledge. Alas, the (flawed) ideology which they claim to represent is dying all over the world and gasping for its breath in universities. They are trying to further their political agenda by exploiting current situation.

a protest at TISS

The picture above is of professors talking to students. This same professor has been very vocal about his dislike for the placement process of particularly one center. This center is renowned for its excellent course and its graduates are in very high demand in the market. This speech was given on the 3rd day of the strike, after which newer posters emerged on the venue.

The protest over scholarships somehow became about “Bhagwakaran” (Saffronization) and “Neejikaran” (Privatization) – pet utterings of a leftist. I wonder How is this related to student’s financial assistance issue? How is TISS being privatized?
loony leftists protest at TISS

Concern for students was always just an excuse to propagate some political propaganda that is now coming out in open. You just have to have a look at the kind of posters and slogans these guys are chanting. The union, with help of influential faculty members, is using the media to twist the issue by showing it as some caste-related injustice, which they are expert at imagining in every situation. Campus politics and identity politics is in full swing, packaged with ideological propaganda.

political propaganda on TISS campus

We know that BJP is in power, RSS is the parent body of BJP and ABVP is the student wing of RSS. How does this connect with the issue of financial assistance? There are questions to be asked to the current dispensation. They can be (and must be) criticized by perceived/real shortcomings. But, there is no conspiracy by the government against this institute. There has been a reduction of expenditure on education, however, these cuts have been imposed on maintenance costs and not on scholarships.

If political propaganda on and inside campus was not enough, now outsiders are coming in with their own agenda. I came across this video on Facebook where one “Osama bhai” from Aligarh Muslim University (I don’t know whether he is a current student or an alumnus) is addressing students on strike.

After listening to him, one can assess for themselves, where this protest is headed towards. I have following questions; Who called this person to the campus? Who allowed him to speak to the students? Who provided this platform?

The answer is Student Union of TISS. This protest is a ground to pitch for student union re-election next year. Also, there lurks a greater conspiracy to bring disturbance in the campuses across India by using issues which can be solved easily by proper collaboration and framing of policies. Perhaps, this is being done by people whom the “My Voice” article mentioned.

In this process, the reputation of my institution is taking a hit. Aspirants are wondering if they should come to TISS for studies. The other students are caught in a lurch – should they continue their support to a protest which is headed nowhere? Should they put their assignments, their studies on hold?

While this issue has garnered a lot of (negative) publicity, does this achieve what it is supposedly intended to do (which is to bring education within reach of those who lack financial means)? While appreciating the largely peaceful nature of the protest, there have been multiple instances which have caused me significant disquiet. How long will one tolerate instances of hooliganism, lack of courtesy extended to staff members and their families?

Instead, we are being presented with the following logic behind the protests:

  • We will make the life of admin miserable
  • The miserable admin will, in turn, make the government miserable
  • The miserable government will release and sanction more funds
  • Hence, we will make education accessible to all.

Every rational individual will strive towards making education accessible to all. Unfortunately, the current protest has digressed into something else altogether. What purpose and who is this is serving now is definitely not the student who is in need of quality education.

I hope my friends will see the truth and break out of being used as pawns by nefarious political interests.

Indian Railways aims to install sanitary napkin vending machines at 200 railway stations by Women’s Day

0

The Indian Railways wants to install sanitary napkin dispensers and incinerators at 200 major railway stations in the country by the International Woman’s Day on March 8. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal visited a production Unit named ‘Dastak’ on February 25. The unit was started by Railway Women’s Welfare Central Organization (RWWCO) for making eco-friendly and affordable “sanitary pads”. The production unit is located at the Sarojini Nagar Railway Colony.

Dastak unit is dedicated to the production of low-cost eco-friendly sanitary pads. The setup includes a sanitary pad manufacturing machine. Raw materials like wood pulp, gel sheet a back sheet, net, non-woven sheet, silicone paper are used which are all biodegradable. The napkins after packing are sterilised using ultraviolet rays. The unit at present employes six women and produces 400 pads a day. Scale up and improvements are being planned.

Chairman of Railway Board Ashwani Lohani has stated that efforts are underway to cover about 200 major Railway stations and Railway premises by March 8, 2018, International Women’s Day. The initiative will help women employees and women of financially weaker sections of the society.

The Bhopal Railway station in January had become India’s first Railway station to be installed with a sanitary napkin vending machine.

After Bhopal, Nanded and Aurangabad Railway stations have followed the example and installed sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators for the benefit of women passengers and employees. The New Delhi Railway Station, as well as the headquarters of the Northern Railways at Baroda House, had already seen vending machines and incinerators being installed.

The Railway Minister said that the woman self-help groups undertaking such initiatives should be encouraged to scale up their production and Indian Railways will lead the way in the socially beneficial cause.
