Muslim boys were making bombs for self-defence: RJD MLA Nehaluddin

Following the bomb explosion in Sasaram that left 6 injured, RJD MLA Mohammad Nehaluddin has made a bizarre comment while saying that the Muslim boys were making bombs for their own safety.

The RJD MLA from Rafiganj Assembly Constituency said that some members belonging to the Muslim community were making bombs in self-defence. The MLA said, “What would they have done if they had died? Muslim children had to do this to save their lives. They had to do this in self-defence.”

The RJD MLA blamed center for the violence in the state and said that BJP is doing it to win the 40 Lok Sabha seats from Bihar.

Notably, following the violence during the Ram Navami Shobhayatra in Sasaram, the news of the bomb blast came to the fore. In Sasaram in Rohtas, six people were injured in a bomb blast in the Sherganj locality late evening on 1st April. The Bihar police, however, have claimed that it was not an incident of communal violence. Bihar Police said that a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was sent to the spot to investigate the matter after receiving information about the incident of a bomb blast in Sasaram of Rohtas. “The blast was reported at a shanty and a scooty has been recovered from the area. Prima facie it does not appear to be a communal incident,” the police said.

News of another bomb blast also surfaced on Monday (April 3, 2023). However, the Bihar Police denied it outright and said that it was the sound of a firecracker. Police have said that at around 5 AM, some unknown person burst crackers on the outer wall of Mannauvar Raine’s house in Mochi Tola, about 3 KMs from Sasaram police station, this spread the rumour of a bomb blast among the people present there.

During the Ram Navami Shobhayatra, violence started in Bihar Sharif of Nalanda district and Sasaram of Rohtas district of Bihar. In many places, news ranging from arson to firing had come to the fore. According to the reports to date, Bihar Police has arrested over 100 people involved in the violence.

‘Mob brought petrol bombs, burnt our shops’: Hindu victims of Ram Navami violence in Bihar Sharif share their ordeal with media

While people celebrated the birth anniversary of Lord Ram, communal violence convulsed many parts of the country. The Nalanda district of Bihar was also engulfed in this destructive blaze of violence. According to reports from the victims, a religious mob in Nalanda’s Bihar Sharif set fire to Hindu shops and their warehouses, causing extensive damage.

TV9 has reported on violent incidents and arson that occurred near Sogra College in Biharsharif. In the video footage, it is visible that several Hindu-owned shops have been burned to the ground. During an interview with TV9, a man named Umesh Prasad Goswami stated that ten of his shops were damaged, with goods being looted and set on fire. When asked about the extent of the loss, Umesh stated that his property, valued at crores of rupees, had been destroyed. Another individual also reported that initially his shop was ransacked, following which the gate was broken and set on fire.

The wholesale bookshop situated across from Umesh Kumar’s shop has also suffered a similar fate. It too was set on fire. The affected parties have reported that the fire brigade arrived two to three hours after their shops caught fire. By then, much of the damage had already been done. The people affected have claimed that they repeatedly pleaded with the authorities to send the fire brigade earlier, but the response was not timely.

According to a victim, the entire incident was carried out by a group of approximately 50 to 60 individuals who were armed with petrol bombs. These bombs were set alight and thrown into shops and warehouses. The proprietor of a pipe shop stated that the pipes kept in one area of the shop managed to survive, but everything else was reduced to ashes. Those affected by the arson allege that the police administration was absent from the scene in Bihar Sharif when the incident took place.

He also stated that the police’s absence from the scene gave the perpetrators ample time to carry out the robbery. The shop stocked stationery items and had an office on the premises. The mob set fire to everything. The affected parties reported that upon receiving news of the fire, they went to the police station seeking help but received no response. By the time the police arrived at the scene, everything had already been destroyed.

What’s noteworthy in this video is that when people informed a TV9 reporter that a temple had also been set on fire, the reporter waved his hand and said, “No, no, don’t show it.” This begs the question, if the mob did indeed set fire to the temple, then what was the problem in reporting the incident and bringing it to the world’s attention? While we cannot confirm the claims, as victims have made these allegations, they warrant investigation.

Regarding the entire incident, Nalanda DM Shashank Shubhankar has stated that he is inspecting the affected areas. The culprits are being identified through CCTV, DVR, drone, and videography footage. So far, 27 individuals have been arrested, and continuous raids are underway. Action will be taken against all those involved. During the violence, firing took place, and some people were hit by shrapnel, resulting in injuries for over 20 people.

It is a lie, chapters on Mughals history not removed: NCERT director refutes media reports

Several media reports had widely speculated that the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has amended its publications, notably the 12th-class History book, and removed certain chapters on the Mughal empire. After the rumour gained traction, the director of NCERT Dinesh Prasad Saklani addressed the issue and refuted the claims that were being spread by various news outlets.

The NCERT director told ANI that the chapters on the Mughals had not been removed. He stated that only the overlapping chapters had been dropped, alleviating the additional strain on children’s shoulders.

“It’s a lie. (Chapters on) Mughals have not been dropped. There was a rationalisation process last year because due to COVID, there was pressure on students everywhere”, he said.

Calling the debate unnecessary, the NCERT director said the expert committee recommended that if the chapter was dropped, it will not affect the knowledge of the children and an unnecessary burden can be removed. “The debate is unnecessary. Those who don’t know can check the textbooks…”, Saklani added.

“We are working as per NEP (National Education Policy) 2020. This is a transition phase. NEP 2020 speaks of reducing the content load. We are implementing it. NCF (National Curriculum Framework) for school education is being formed, it will be finalised soon. Textbooks will be printed in 2024 as per NEP. We have not dropped anything right now”, the NCERT chief added.

Saklani asserted that there are no new books and that the revisions made last year, which the advisory body justified at length last year, will continue this academic year as well. “A process was adopted, which was totally professional,” he added.

OpIndia reported earlier in the day how the mainstream media widely speculated that the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has amended its publications, notably the 12th-class History book, by removing certain chapters on the Mughal empire.

Though until that time, there was no official confirmation from NCERT about the news, it was amusing to see, how, as soon as this rumour gained traction, several so-called liberals and Islamists rushed to Twitter to either mock the Rajputs, who had actually started the resistance to Mughal brutalities in India.

‘Trying to learn Hindi and English in my own humble way’: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma gives a befitting reply to an elitist Congress troll

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has always been known for his sharp remarks and unapologetic demeanour. Therefore, when an elitist Congress troll tried to mock him over a video, the Assam CM did not hold back to give a befitting riposte.

In a recent Twitter interaction between a Congress-affiliated troll and the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the latter shut down the troll in a humble yet firm manner. The troll had posted a video of Sarma where he was seen writing his remarks in the visitor’s book by looking at a piece of paper that contained a pre-written note.

The video was posted with a snarky comment implying that Sarma was not capable of writing his own remarks and needed to rely on a pre-written note.

However, Sarma did not take the insult lying down and responded with grace and humility. In a tweet, he said, “I went to an Assamese medium school and am trying my best to learn Hindi and English in my own humble way. I must admit that I do not know English and Hindi very well, and I have no hesitation in admitting it.”

The Congress troll posted the video and said “Presenting the CM of Assam who can’t even write a paragraph in a visitor’s book without copying”

Sarma’s response has met with applause and admiration on social media, with many praising him for his honesty and humility. In a political climate where politicians are often criticized for being too polished and rehearsed, Sarma’s admission of his limitations was refreshing and admirable.

This incident once again highlights the importance of being respectful and civil on social media, especially in the political arena. While political differences may exist, it is important to maintain a level of dignity and respect in one’s discourse. Sarma’s response serves as a reminder that one can be firm and assertive without resorting to insults and personal attacks.

As for the troll, his attempt to smear Sarma’s reputation backfired, and he was left looking petty and betrayed his party’s elitist mindset that looks down on those who are not privileged enough to be proficient in multiple languages. The incident has once again demonstrated that in politics, as in life, honesty and humility will always win the day.

Party leader wanted to have a physical relationship with me: Woman Congress leader from Chhattisgarh

In Raipur, Chhattisgarh, a woman leader of the Congress party has made serious allegations against a party leader. The woman has claimed that the Congress leader was forcing her to have physical relations with him. She says that he was constantly pressurising, and was asking her to share his bed, and in return get a prestigious position in the party.

The woman has also claimed to have received obscene calls and messages from the party. Regarding this matter, the woman leader has also complained to the Raipur SSP. On the other hand, the Congress leader, Jayant Sahu, on whom these serious allegations have been leveled, is calling the woman a blackmailer.

The case pertains to the Telibandha police station area of Raipur. Jayant Sahu is a former district member of Dharsinwa and currently works for the Congress party in the Dharsinwa assembly constituency. The woman leader, who has made these allegations, is a resident of Bemetara. Jayant Sahu and the woman leader became friends on Facebook some time ago, and following that, she started coming to Raipur.

She said that Jayant wanted to have a physical relationship with her. Some time ago, she also posted a social media post against Jayant on Facebook. In this post, the female leader claimed that Jayant Sahu’s favourite work is to give positions to women and instead use them. The woman has told that she has now informed the SSP about all the facts.

The woman has further claimed that the Police are also not taking any action in her case because of Jayant’s influence. She further claims that the police have been harassing her a lot, and there was no way left for her. “I am thinking of going to the police station and committing suicide by pouring kerosene on myself”, the woman has been quoted as saying in a report published in Dainik Bhaskar.

On the other hand, Jayant Sahu claims that the woman has borrowed some money from him and is now blackmailing her. He claims that she is making such baseless allegations so that she does not have to return the money. Jayant said that a few days ago, he had gone out, then the woman came to his house and took 2 lakhs from his wife. A complaint has already been made on behalf of Jayant at the police station on March 14.

Jayant has claimed that the woman is producing fake chats to spread false information about him and to tarnish his public image.

An FIR has already been registered against the woman at Telibandha police station. The woman claims that her side is not being heard, according to police sources, now the matter will be interrogated afresh and the facts being presented by the woman will be examined.

New Yorker journalist attacks chief of Hindu American Foundation on Twitter, gets called out by Netizens for his racist and Hinduphobic comment

On Tuesday, April 4, Isaac Chotiner, a staff writer at The New Yorker, launched an unprovoked attack on Suhag A Shukla, co-founder and executive director of advocacy organisation Hindu American Foundation after the foundation posted a message congratulating Shukla on being honoured by the US health secretary. Netizens, however, were quick to condemn the author for his flagrant display of Hinduphobia and racism while criticising Shulka.

On March 30, Hindu American Foundation posted a congratulatory Tweet for Suhag A Shukla for being among 15 women faith leaders who were honoured by US secretary of health and human services Xavier Becerra for “demonstrating extraordinary leadership on behalf of humanity”.

Responding to this tweet, The New Yorker journalist Isaac Chotiner tweeted, “I would personally be fine if Biden cabinet officials didn’t “celebrate” sinister sectarians.”

Many Netizens reacted to Isaac Chotiner’s tweet criticising the Hindu outfit’s chief, which they believed was motivated by Chotiner’s obvious bias against Hindus.

Miffed by the anti-Hindu mindset of Isaac Chotiner, twitter user @ChakraNews wrote, “Stop your bigotry and hinduphobia. Looks like @SuhagAShukla got a few tweets of rape and hate threats after you shared this tweet. Primarily from abrahamic faith supremacists who see hindus as 2nd class pagans. Please explain what you mean by sectarian sinister? How so?”

“Wow – your hate shows up against @SuhagAShukla and Hindus. You ought to know better that hate has no moral justification to it!” wrote Vibhuti, Jain lambasting The New Yorker writer for his vile tweet against Shukla.

Several other Twitter users slammed the journalist for his blatant display of hate against Hindus.

Disgusted by the outright anti-Hindu prejudice, another Twitter user chastised The New York Times for fostering such racism within their organisation. “Systemic racism and white supremacy persist in media despite efforts to combat it, seen in discriminatory hiring and denigration of women of colour by white men journalists. Intersectionality of racism, sexism and power dynamics at play, reinforces racial hierarchy. @newyorker,” tweeted @DhanpatiKubera.

Notably, Suhag A Shukla, co-founder and executive director of advocacy organisation Hindu American Foundation also responded to Isaac Chotiner’s tweet. “If I’m going to be trolled by a New Yorker staff writer, is it too much to ask that he not retreat to overused Irish alliteration? “Sinister sectarian”? Really, Isaac. But at least he didn’t assign me a caste as the New Yorker does to all Hindus of late. Small mercies.

The New Yorker correspondent’s Hinduphobic statement is unsurprising given that the publication often provides platforms to those who peddle rampant misinformation against India and Prime Minister Modi. Dexter Filkins’ 2019 anti-Modi report for The New Yorker was an example of this.

Ram Navami violence: MHA seeks a detailed report from the West Bengal government over communal clash in Howrah

0

Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a detailed report from the West Bengal government on violence that broke out between two groups when a Ram Navami procession was taken out in Howrah city last week.

As per top government sources, the West Bengal government has been asked to submit the report as soon as possible. The MHA’s move comes after West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday wrote a second letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah over violence in the state during Ram Navami celebrations and sought his immediate intervention.

That was Majumdar’s second letter to Shah regarding the violence in Bengal in less than a week.

“In continuation to my earlier letter dated March 31 regarding the communal attack on the processions of Ram Navami in Howrah and Dalkhola, it is further informed that the attack has not yet been stopped and is occurring in different parts of West Bengal,” Majumdar wrote in his letter to Shah.

He said another attack was made on the Ram Navami procession at Rishra in Hooghly district on Sunday where BJP MP and All India Vice President Dilip Ghosh was participating.

“Along with the Ram Bhaktas he too was attacked by stone pelting. His vehicle was torched and incidents of arson happened as police stood still as mere spectators which strengthens our allegations that there is definite support from the ruling party TMC and section of the administration led by Mamata Banerjee who has already issued several statements in favour of the miscreants belonging to the minority community,” Majumdar said.

“In view of the deteriorating law and order situation, we immediately seek your kind intervention as per law so that the situation does not go out of control and lives and properties of ordinary citizens are saved,” he added.

Shah on Sunday also spoke to West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose and took stock of the situation.

In the telephonic conversation with Bose, the Home Minister had also taken detailed information of the incident that led to violence in Howrah city, where several vehicles were torched and shops were ransacked on Thursday evening.

State Police had said a number of people were detained in this connection with the violence that reportedly erupted when the Ram Navami procession was passing through the Kazipara locality in Howrah city.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has assured strict action against the perpetrators of the violence and asserted that the usage of an unauthorised route led to the clash.

The BJP has attacked Banerjee for the violence.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Locket Chatterjee on Friday said that the lives of Hindus in the state were “under threat”.

The BJP MP accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of appeasement politics and demanded her resignation.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur also condemned the violence in West Bengal.

The situation turned violent in the Shibpur area of Howrah on Friday. Fresh violence broke out on Friday a day after arson on ‘Ram Navami’.

‘Liberals’ and Islamists mock Rajputs after NCERT reportedly removes a chapter on Mughals

On Tuesday, April 2, mainstream media widely speculated that the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has amended its publications, notably the 12th-class History book, by eliminating certain chapters on the Mughal empire. India Today reported that the NCERT has removed a few chapters on the Mughals from the class 12 history curriculum.

It said that the chapters on ‘Kings and Chronicles; the Mughal Courts (C. 16th and 17th centuries)’ has been removed from the class 12 history book- ‘Themes in Indian History-Part II.’ It further said that the revised syllabus would be implemented from the academic year 2023-2024.

In their frustration that school history books would no longer exalt Mughal history, far-left academics, and Nehruvian “historians,” who have for years distorted Indian history, rushed to Twitter to mock the Rajputs, who had actually started the resistance to Mughal brutalities in India.

Audrey Truschke, the controversial self-described historian who went to great lengths to whitewash the tyrannical Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, seemed to be quite miffed by the mere thought of NCERT removing portions of Mughal history from the syllabus. She tweeted, “Somewhere in the Hindutva universe, this is going to end with the Marathas fighting the Rajput Empire, right? #history #Hindutva.”

“Since Rajputs were always losing wars, they built this to hide from people they were repeatedly losing from,” commented a Twitter user @deepsealioness in response to another Twitter user @Bro_Bhau’s post wherein he shared an image of the Qutab Minar.

“Rajputs only fought the air and nothing else. #Mugalhistory,” wrote N.S. Madhavan.

“After removing Mughals from textbooks, teaching History will be weird. Like, Rajputs fought a war with nobody and lost,” tweeted @Joydas.

Some Twitter users, in their hate for Modi, even attempted to incite their fellow Muslims against the central government despite the decision, which, if real, will be solely taken by NCERT.

“‘The Great Mughal Purge’: the Indian government aims to annihilate the very memory of Indo-Islamic civilisation and replace it with their own fiction as they disenfranchise Indian Muslims. Why is the Muslim world sitting back and letting this happen?” tweeted @Osmani268.

@Bro_Bhau also mocked NCERT by claiming that henceforth the institution would be renamed after Narendra Modi. “Before: NCERT: The National Council of Educational Research and Training Now: NCERT: Namo Council of Educational Research and Training.=,” he tweeted.

Twitter user @KaderAriz was quick to use the Muslim victim card to condemn the decision. He implied that the measure was being conducted because the ruling dynasty (the Mughals) belonged to the ‘wrong’ (Muslim) community.

Several other so-called liberals and Islamists unnecessarily dragged Savarkar into the picture. Twitter user @sidin wrote in a sarcastic tweet, “Of all the monuments built by Savarkar I think Humayun’s Tomb is my favourite.”

Meanwhile, NCERT has dismissed these media reports that chapters on Mughals have been dropped from history books. Speaking to ANI, Dinesh Prasad Saklani, Director of NCERT, said, “It’s a lie. (Chapters on) Mughals have not been dropped”.

While NCERT has not dropped Mughals from history books, it was amusing to see, how, as soon as this rumour gained traction, these so-called liberals and Islamists rushed to Twitter to either play the victim or insult Hindus and the Rajputs.

AAP does what it does best – lie through its teeth. Here are 6 lies about PM Modi and Adani that Arvind Kejriwal spread

For the last several years, especially starting ahead of the 2019 general elections, Rahul Gandhi has decided that accusing PM Narendra Modi of providing undue benefits to select industrialists is the best way to attack the BJP. While Rahul Gandhi has not achieved any success using this strategy, he actually lost his constituency in Uttar Pradesh, he continues to do the same. Ahead of the general elections next year, other opposition leaders also have started to use the same strategy to target Narendra Modi.

Two notable names who have been accusing PM Modi of favouring business leaders and using Ambani-Adani claims of Rahul Gandhi are Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal, the CMs of West Bengal and Delhi. Recently the Delhi CM made such allegations in the Delhi assembly, where he accused the Modi govt of tweaking coal policies to benefit Gautam Adani.

Arvind Kejriwal claimed that a BJP leader had told him that all of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s money was with Adani and that Modi wants to become the richest man in the world. He alleged that PM Modi is helping Adani to get businesses because it is his money used in the corporate house. Speaking in the assembly, the CM said, “PM is less educated and does not understand things properly. This is worrisome.”

He claimed that recently all state governments have received an order from the central govt asking to import 10% of the total coal requirement in the states. He alleged that states are forced to mandatorily import 10% even if they do not require it, and this means states will have to buy imported coal from Adani, because as per him, “Aur Import kewal Modi jee karte the, Adani karta tha” (and only PM Modi and Adani import coal).

‘This means you will have to compulsorily purchase 10% coal from Adani even if you do not require it,’ he said. Kejriwal then added that domestic coal is available at Rs 2000 per ton, while imported coal costs Rs 20,000 per ton. “That means you will have to buy coal at 10 times the price from Adani, which means from Modi jee,” he added.

Arvind Kejriwal then alleged that while Supreme Court has ordered coal mines can’t be allocated to private companies, govt has made an exception for Adani and allocated the company coal mines. He then went on to add that ‘govt has declared that coals below 4000 calories will be considered rejected products, whereas it is considered the best coal’.

‘He is getting this rejected product for free’, the Delhi CM claimed. “Therefore, every year Modi jee takes away at least Rs 2800 crore. Every year Modi jee takes away coal worth Rs 2800 crore from our mines”, Arvind Kejriwal claimed in Delhi assembly.

He also claimed that Adani group’s projects in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have actually been taken up by Modi himself. Kejriwal went on to claim that BJP govt has looted more in 7 years than what the Congress had looted in 75 years. This caused a huge uproar from BJP MLAs in the house, who demanded discussion on the corruption cases that have emerged in various department of the Delhi govt.

Just like Arvind Kejriwal cited big numbers and accused Narendra Modi of crony capitalism like Rahul Gandhi does, his claims are also same, baseless, based on lies. For last several days, Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party has been alleging that PM Narendra Modi is not educated, even after Gujarat High Court fined him for filing RTI application to get the PM’s degrees which are already in public domain. But, his claims on the coal sector reveals who lacks very basic understanding of crucial power sector.

Let’s see some of the big claims he made and how they are wrong:

10% coal import for blending

Arvind Kejriwal claimed that Modi govt has forced states to mandatorily import 10% coal, and they are forced to buy this coal at 10 times more price from Adani. This claim is misleading and false. While such a n order was issued earlier, it was withdrawn, and it had nothing to do with benefiting Adani or any particular company.

It is true that the union power ministry had asked coal-fired thermal power plants to import 10% of their total coal consumption. The reason was, India was facing a massive coal crisis at that time, and anticipating rising power demand ahead of the summer, the govt had asked the power plants to blend 10% imported coal. Initially in October 2021, the govt had asked the plants to import upto 10% coal. But in an April 2022 notification, the power ministry had asked the generators to mandatorily import 10% coal.

It was an urgent step taken at that time because the coal-based plants had coal reserves at that time for just 3 days. It was not that there was an abundance supply of domestic coal, and the power companies were forced to buy imported coal instead of local coal.

According to the Ministry of Coal, India’s coal consumption crossed a billion-tonne mark to touch 1028 million tonnes in 2021-22 from 906 million in 2020-21. To keep pace with the growing coal demands to ensure uninterrupted and affordable electricity, India produced 819 million tonnes of coal in 2021-22 and balance 209 million tonnes of coal had to be imported.

With their 688 million tonnes of coal production in 2021-22, the government of India owned Coal India and Singareni Collieries, owned by Telangana and the central govt, could not meet the country’s coal demand, therefore the govt had to rationalise the demand to prevent competition among the states. Hence, govt of India asked them to meet 10% of their coal requirements through competitively imported coal.

Notably, Coal India and Singareni Collieries are major coal miners in India. Some other state and centre-owned PSUs and a handful of private miners produce only 130 million tonnes of coal.

If 10% mandatory import was not imposed, bigger power producers like NTPC, who sign long-term supply contracts, would have purchased the entire domestic production, forcing smaller producers to rely on more imported coal which costs must more. To prevent this, the govt had distributed the burden of costly imported coal to all the producers. Notably, sometimes the price of imported coal can be up to 10 times the price of domestic coal.

The order to import 10% coal was withdrawn by the union govt in August 2022, after coal availability in the country improved. However, in January this year, the ministry again asked the thermal power generators to blend imported coal up to 6% of their requirement till September. The order was issued given the anticipated deficit in domestic production, to ensure the continuous availability of electricity.

Forced to purchase imported coal from Adani

Arvind Kejriwal claimed that by forcing power producers to import coal, the Modi govt was forcing them to purchase coal from Adani at higher prices. This is a completely false claim, as the companies were asked to import coal at completive rates, and obviously, they were not restricted to a single importer.

While Adani Enterprises participated in coal import tenders and won some, many other companies also won such tenders. Moreover, Adani actually lost some of the biggest import tenders invited by Coal India. Indonesia’s Bara Daya Energi had beaten Adani in two coal import tenders of 3 million tonnes each by Coal India in July 2022. Adani had won a 2.416 million tonne import order for Rs 4033 crore in CIL’s first import tender, but it was cancelled later as CIL didn’t issue the contract’s letter of award (LoA) to Adani. The Indonesian group was subsequently asked to supply additional coal due to the cancellation of the Adani order.

Coal India had invited import tenders after several state gencos and independent power asked it to import coals to meet the blending requirements, and all import orders were issued through a bidding process. So far AAP or Arvind Kejriwal have not alleged any irregularities in those tenders while alleging that Adani and PM Modi benefited from the imports.

If Arvind Kejriwal and AAP have any proof of tender manipulation in favour of Adani, they should come forward with those proofs in the interests of hundreds of coal traders and the general public in general. But they are only levelling allegations inside the assembly and at press conferences, without any documentary evidence.

₹2,000 per tonne vs ₹20,000 per tonne,

The third claim that Kejriwal made is that while domestic coal is available at ₹2000 per tonne, govt was forcing states to import it at ₹20000 per tonne. While it is true that imported coal costs much more, this is a highly generalised claim, and without mentioning what price he is referring to chat grade of coal, this even does not make any sense, because coal comes in various grades and their rates are different.

The reason domestic coal is cheaper is that PSU Coal India has capped its prices so that state power distribution companies can provide cheaper electricity to the general public, which also enables parties like AAP to promise free electricity. But there is no such price cap in international coal prices, therefore coal has to be imported at market-determined prices, just like crude oil.

While the prices of domestic coal are controlled under the National Coal Index (NCI) to keep the electricity tariff in check, imported coal is traded in the free international markets as per the global benchmarks such as Indonesian Coal Index, Newcastle and API4.

Despite higher prices, Indian power generators and other coal users like steel manufacturers import coal due to two reasons, shortage of availability of domestic coal, and inferior quality of domestic coal. When coal production in the country goes down, it has to be imported to keep running the thermal power generators running.

Moreover, it is well-known that Indian coal is considered inferior due to its low calorific value and high ash content. On the other hand, imported coal with higher calorific value and low ash content is priced higher. Thermal plants are built for specific grades of coal for optimum output, and for this reason, also they need to import high-grade coal to blend with domestic coal.

It is already explained above why govt had mandated 10% coal import, to distribute the burden of higher prices among everyone.

To avoid costlier imported coals, domestic production will have to up, but AAP is opposing new coal mines in election-bound states like Chhattisgarh alleging favouritism while opposing imports at the same time. While the party keeps promising free electricity everywhere, its policy on coal production and import is problematic.

Allocation vs Auction

Another baseless claim that Kejriwal made was that despite the Supreme Court prohibiting the allocation of coal mines, the Modi government made an exception for Adani, and allowed the company to look ₹2800 crore per year. While it is true that Supreme Court has prohibited the government of India from allocating coal blocks to private firms, Arvind Kejriwal smartly didn’t mention that this does not stop the govt from auctioning coal blocks.

During the previous UPA government, coal blocks were allocated to private companies on a nomination basis instead of competitive bidding, which resulted in the coal allocation scam or the Coalgate. After the scam broke out, the Supreme Court cancelled 214 of the 218 coal blocks allocated by successive governments since 1993.

Narendra Modi government has not allocated a single coal block as alleged by AAP, but there have been multiple auctions in the past couple of years to attract private investment in the coal sector to meet the growing electricity demand of the country. So far, the government of India has allocated 93 coal blocks in six tranches of auction held so far and has invited competitive bids for auction of 101 more blocks.

Several companies have won these auctions, and the likes of Jindal, Vedanta, major cement and other energy intensive companies have won the majority of blocks, Adani has won barely half a dozen blocks.

It is notable that even though Adani has won some coal blocks, power companies and state governments are not forced to buy coal from them. Instead, AAP governments in Delhi and Punjab can participate in the auctions to have own supply of coal to produce electricity.

Coal grades

The Delhi CM further claimed that coal below 4000 Kilo Calorie per Kilogram is considered the best in the world, alleging that govt was giving Adani such coal for free. This is also a completely false claim, a calorific value of 4000 is actually almost half of the value of high-grade coal. According to the Coal Ministry’s gradation of coal, coal with over 7000 K.Cal./Kg. value is considered grade 1. After that 6700 to 7000 is grade 2, 6400 to 6700 is grade 3, and so on.

Coal with a calorific value of 4000 and less is placed in grade 12 and lower. More the calorific value, more the thermal power produced by the fuel, therefore, coal with 4000 K.Cal./Kg. value is not best quality as claimed by Arvind Kejriwal. It is actually considered low-grade coal. Coal with 5,800 Kcal/kg or higher calorific value is high-grade coal.

Coal rejects from Chhattisgarh

Coming to the claim that Adani has been allowed to take coal with 4000 Kcal/kg calorific value for free, it is also false and misleading. While it is true that Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam requires that coal supplied by Parsa Kente Collieries Limited, a joint venture between the state govt power company and Adani, has to be above this calorific value, it does not mean the coal with lower grade is considered waste and given away for free to Adani.

Parsa Kente Collieries mines coal at coal mines in Chhattisgarh which have been specifically allotted for power production in Rajasthan. Due to the requirement that coal supplied must be above 4000 Kcal/kg in calorific value, the company runs the lower grade coal through a process known as washing, where the ash content in the coal is reduced. The higher the ash content in coal, the lower the calorific value.

Therefore, the company increases the calorific value of the coal by washing the coal and reducing the ash content as required by Rajasthan. The washing process generates coal reject, coal mixed with high ash content, which is considered a waste product. As this coal reject can’t be used in Rajasthan’s power plants, the company has been allowed to sell this, as the waste product must be removed from the mining site.

Some power plants buy these cheap coal rejects to blend with high grade coal. Power plants run by Adani group also purchased such coal rejects from Parsa Kente at lower prices. The company didn’t get the coal for free, it paid the price for coal rejects which is lower than normal coal prices.

The amount of ₹2,800 crore a year has been arrived at by using the quantity of this coal rejects transported from the mines, using Railway freight data. But to do that, the rate of domestic coal has been used, giving a much higher amount. The price of coal reject is much lower, as its ash content is high and therefore the calorific value is low. Therefore, Adani group is not earning ₹2,800 crore a year from coal rejects, the amount will be much lower.

It is notable that till 2 years ago, washing of coal was mandatory in India due to high ash content in Indian coal, as it causes more air pollution. The govt did away with the mandatory requirement in 2020. But Parsa Kente needs to wash the coal due to Rajasthan’s requirement of coal with above 4000 K.Cal./Kg calorific value.

‘Bulletproof burqa’: Pakistan’s ex-PM Imran Khan appears in Lahore court surrounded amid heavy security and a bulletproof bucket covering his head

On April 4, Pakistan’s beleaguered ex-PM Imran Khan finally got some legal relief. An anti-terrorism court in Lahore granted him bail in 3 cases.

As per a report in ANI,  Imran Khan’s bail has been extended till April 13 in three terrorism cases registered against him. The Zille Shah murder case, arson, and interfering with state affairs were three instances in which the PTI Chairman appeared in court seeking bail. Under the anti-terror and aiding and abetting laws, several cases were filed against the PTI chief at the Race Course police station.

The judges of the court had ordered that Khan’s presence is mandatory for the hearing if he wants to secure bail. The ex-PM appeared under heavy security where several personnel were holding up huge polycarbonate sheets to protect Khan.

In addition, Khan was walking blind, as his head was covered by a bulletproof ‘bucket’ like structure over his head.

Videos of his court appearance went viral on social media. Some netizens asked if Khan is wearing a bulletproof burqa.

“In Bollywood, Pathan plays with guns & bombs. In reality, Pathan appears in court in bulletproof Burqa”, commented the popular handle Pakistan Untold.

Security personnel were surrounding Khan from all possible angles with bulletproof material. They were also acting as human shields for the ex-PM. Pakistani media reported that since the attack during his rally in Wazirabad last year, Khan fears for his life and has been stepping out only under high security.

Khan is currently dealing with more than 140 cases related to terrorism, murder, attempted murder, and blasphemy that the PMLN-led coalition government registered against him over the past 11 months.

Earlier in March, Khan had made a similar appearance in the Lahore High Court.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) granted protective bail to Imran Khan in the same case and directed him to approach the relevant court in this matter. PTI chairman Imran Khan, who arrived at the court, wrote in his petition seeking interim bail that he wants to be involved in the probe but there is a fear of arrest by the police, ANI reported.

Khan had been granted bail by the ATC with a condition that he post surety bonds of (PKR) 100,000 in each instance and cooperate with the investigation and appear at all scheduled hearings.
