‘Plan of action’ to reclaim PoK should be carried out discreetly just like abrogation of Article 370: Amit Shah at Republic Summit

Speaking on the second day of the Republic Summit, Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to anchor Arnab Goswami’s question about the government’s ‘plan of action’ to recover Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Amit Shah said that such ‘plan of action’ to reclaim PoK should be carried out furtively at a suitable time like the abrogation of Article 370 and should not be a subject of discussion on National television.

“Matters such as securing Pakistan occupied Kashmir from the grasp of the neighbouring country is an issue of national security and thus it should not be discussed on national television. Such discussions do not happen in public. However, I do believe that an appropriate ‘plan of action’ should be set in motion at the right time just like the abrogation of Article 370,” Shah said.

Talking about his aggressive demeanour, Shah clarified that the aggression exhibited by him is not directed towards any political party or politician in particular but towards the disorder and insecurity bedevilling the country. Shah explained in detail about the singular incident as to why he bristled at Ghulam Nabi Azad in the lower house of the parliament during the discussion of the abrogation of Article 370.

“He (Azad) raised a doubt on the country’s parliamentary competence to legislate a law on Kashmir. It was then that I stood up and asked if he considers Jammu and Kashmir as a part of India or not. If Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and lies within India’s jurisdiction, then the Indian parliament is competent enough to legislate a law on it. Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan occupied Kashmir are integral parts of the country. Not just me but crores of Indians will be ready to give up their life for Kashmir.,” Shah declaimed.

In the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370, many senior BJP leaders declared that India should now set her eyes upon Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Subramanian Swamy said that after scrapping of Article 370, the next thing on the government’s agenda should be reclaiming PoK back.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh too echoed similar sentiments claiming that Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Aksai Chin will soon be integrated with India. Union Minister of Defence, Rajnath Singh warned Pakistan to mend their ways or risk losing PoK just like they lost East Pakistan in the war of 1971. Singh further asserted that any future talks with Pakistan will be on Pakistan occupied Kashmir and not on Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi has himself made it amply clear that Pakistan has illegally occupied its administered Kashmir and he remains hopeful of recovering it back.

Maharashtra: Congress to get 9 cabinet and 4 MoS posts, Speaker likely from NCP

A day ahead of Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray taking oath-taking as Maharashtra Chief Minister, the Congress party has reportedly agreed to give up the claim on the post of Speaker and instead will be accommodated with 13 ministerial berths in Maharashtra council of ministers.

According to the report, the Congress party which had earlier insisted on the post of Speaker in the newly elected legislative assembly has now backed off from the claim. However, the Congress party will now be given 13 ministerial posts that include nine cabinet ministerial berths and four MoS posts.

As per a News18 report, senior Congress leaders Vijay Namdevrao Wadettiwar, Yashomati Thakur, Nana Patole, Varsha Gaikwad, Amin Patel, Ashok Chavan, Amit Deshmukh, Bunty Patil, Vishwajit Kadam, KC Padvi will be nominated as cabinet ministers in the Maharashtra government along with four other junior ministers.

It is likely that the post of Speaker will be from the NCP, which is also expected to get a fair share of cabinet berths in the new government.

The Maharashtra government can not have more than 43 ministers in its council of ministers, which includes Chief Minister, cabinet ministers and minister of states. According to the 91st Constitutional Amendment Act 2003, the total number of ministers including in the council of ministers shall not exceed 15% of the total strength of the state legislative assembly.

The political drama in Maharashtra took a completely new turn on Tuesday when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis resigned from the post after NCP leader Ajit Pawar withdrew his support following his resignation from the government. Following that the Shiv Sena, NCP and the Congress joined hands together to form the next government in Maharashtra.

The BJP, which had won 105 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra assembly, was short of 40 MLAs to prove a majority. The BJP had relied on Ajit Pawar to bring in 54 NCP MLAs. However, the political gamble failed as Ajit Pawar shied away from supporting the BJP led government at the last moment.

On Tuesday evening, the newly-elected MLAs, including senior members of the three parties had nominated Shiv Sena chief as the Chief Minister of the state. Uddhav Thackeray will be leading an alliance of the Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party-Congress, called Maha Vikas Aghadi, in Maharashtra. With this, Maharashtra will have a Shiv Sena Chief Minister after 20 years.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will swear in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on 28th November 2019. In a letter last night, Maharashtra Governor Koshyari invited the new alliance ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’ to form a government under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray.

Reportedly, six ministers will also be taking their oath as ministers alongside Chief Minister-designate Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday at Shivaji park in Mumbai.

It is Hindus, not Muslims who disturb peace: Ayodhya Muslim parties’ lawyer Rajeev Dhavan makes outrageous remarks

The Supreme Court in a historic decision had established that the Hindus have a right on the entire 67-acre Ram Janmabhoomi and had granted an alternate 5-acre land to the Muslims to build their Masjid. Though this decision has been welcomed by almost everyone, Senior Advocate Rajeev Dhavan, who has been representing the Muslim parties, does not seem to be too pleased with the apex court’s verdict who has gone on record to make various provocative remarks.

Rajeev Dhavan showing complete disrespect for the apex body said in an address to Muslim Parties that “Injustice has been done to Muslims” and that “unless SC ‘reverses the injustice’, you won’t see justice” says Rajeev Dhavan.

In what could be seen as a clear provocation, the senior advocate said that “Muslims have never disturbed the peace, only Hindus disturbed atmosphere”. He blamed RSS for stoking riots, saying that many probe reports have found RSS to be guilty.

Talking about Sunni Waqf Board’ decision to not file a review petition against the SC verdict on Ayodhya, the senior advocate said that they have taken this decision under immense pressure.

Read: Rajeev Dhavan’s effusive praise for Aurangzeb captures brilliantly the essential position in favour of Babri Masjid

He went on to castigate the chairman of the Sunni Waqf Board, Zafar Ahmad Farooqui by saying that since he has an FIR against him he is subject to the pressure of Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, hinting that it is under Adityanath’s pressure that Farooqui decided that they will not file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Ayodhya dispute.

Yesterday, Uttar Pradesh Sunni Waqf Board had decided not to challenge the Supreme Court verdict on Ayodhya dispute. Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has today come up with the decision to file a review petition in the Ram Janmabhoomi, Ayodhya case.

These remarks from a senior lawyer have stoked severe outrage. Condemning the lawyer for his provocative statements, BJP has slammed Rajeev Dhavan and urges Bar Council to send him a notice. Calling it unethical and unprofessional, BJP’ Subramanian Swamy said that this can be taken note of under the Advocate’s Act and urged the Bar Council to take cognisance of the same.

This is not the first time people might have witnessed this kind of reprehensible conduct from the Muslim Party lawyer. During the last day of the hearing on Ram Janmabhoomi case, Rajeev Dhavan had an epic meltdown when he shredded papers and maps handed over to him by the Hindu Mahasabha.

From UCC, Sabarimala to Maharashtra: Here are the 6 things Amit Shah spoke about at the Republic Summit

Speaking at the Republic Summit, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that his party remains committed to the cause of Uniform Civil Code and assured that it will be implemented in the country at a suitable time.

Here are the main issues that the Home Minister talked about:

Uniform Civil Code

Hitting out at the Congress party, Shah said that BJP’s stance on the Uniform Civil Code has remained steadfast but the Congress party has never made its stand clear on the issue. He asserted that Congress should clarify their stand on it.

The Union Home Minister asserted that UCC is on the BJP’s manifesto and the party does deliver on its promises.

Ayodhya Verdict

Shah also stated that the Congress had been the biggest impediment in the path of Ram Mandir. He stated that the party’s vote bank policies have caused delays for a resolution of the issue.

“Back in 2014, Congress argued that the Ayodhya dispute should be resolved after the General elections. Even in 2019, Congress’ Kapil Sibal advocated that the verdict on the contentious issue should be given after the 2019 General elections as it had the potential of affecting election results. The Supreme Court has given its judgment and provided us with 90 days to complete the necessary procedures. We will not let that 90 become 91,” Shah said.

Difference between Ayodhya and Sabarimala

Following the Ayodhya judgment, Shah had exhorted the people to peacefully accept the apex court’s decision of granting the land to the Hindu parties. Shah, however, drew a sharp distinction between his stance on the Sabrimala verdict and Ayodhya judgment. “Sabarimala issue is related to cultural practices and traditions whereas the Ayodhya case was a purely civil dispute. The two issues should not be conflated. The courts should refrain from regulating the religious beliefs of the people. If the court is predisposed in giving a judgment in the Sabarimala matter, I hope their decisions on women entry in mosques and Parsi temples remain consistent with the Sabarimala verdict,” Shah said.

Nationwide NRC

Regarding the nationwide implementation of National Register of Citizens(NRC), Shah responded in affirmative, questioning the detractors if they want to see their country turn into a ‘Dharamshala’. “NRC will be implemented across the country. This is my party’s stand on it,” Shah said.

PoK

When asked about the plan of action the government of India has initiated in reclaiming back Pakistan occupied Kashmir(PoK), Shah replied that such sensitive issues should not be discussed on national television, instead at the right time, the ‘plan of action’ will be set in motion in a discreet manner just like abrogation of Article 370 was carried out.

Maharashtra politics

Shah also spoke about the ongoing Maharashtra political crisis. He once again reasserted that no assurance of chief ministerial position was given to the Shiv Sena before the elections. Speaking on horse-trading allegations, Shah said, “Is it not horse-trading that the Shiv Sena has got the Chief Ministerial position? If it were about the welfare of Maharashtra, why didn’t the Congress party and NCP had their chief ministers?”

“In all our rallies, all senior BJP leaders have been saying that if the BJP-SS alliance wins, Devendra Fadnavis will be our CM, why was it not opposed then? We won on 70 per cent of the seats contested while Shiv Sena only bagged 42 per cent of the total seats they fought on. All Shiv Sena candidates, including Aditya Thackeray, used PM Modi’s cut-outs to garner votes in their constituencies. People of Maharashtra know it clearly that Shiv Sena acquired seats by using PM Modi’s name,” Shah declared.

‘Keeping BJP out’ isn’t a winning strategy, and the opposition parties seem to have learnt nothing from history

And yet again, “everyone” gets together to keep BJP out, this time in Maharashtra. For what it’s worth, here are the three highest scores by any political party in Maharashtra in the last 25 years (since 1995)

#1 BJP (2014) : 122 seats

# 2 BJP (2019): 105 seats

# 3 Congress (2009) : 82 seats.

Indeed, the BJP is the only party to have crossed 100 seats in Maharashtra since 1991. Nobody else has even come close. And yet the party finds itself in the opposition benches.

For BJP supporters across several generations, this is a familiar pang.

In 1996, Atalji had to resign after just 13 days as Prime Minister.  In 1999, Atalji lost his government by 1 vote.

The strategy of “keep BJP out” has played out in state after state and at the Center. For decades. It mattered little whether BJP was a major player or a minor player. Even when the BJP had just 3 seats in the West Bengal Assembly, the Congress, the CPIM and Trinamool were conniving with just one objective: keep BJP out.

This strategy might bring temporary reprieve to ‘secular forces’ and their liberal cheerleaders every now and then. But what does history really show?

Read: Maharashtra: Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress MLAs made to swear pledge of loyalty for Sonia Gandhi, Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray

How did things shape out in Indian politics since the day Atalji lost his government by one vote?

Has anybody actually been able to stop the BJP? There were supposed to be all sorts of barriers to BJP’s growth. Language barriers, caste barriers, North-South divide,  urban-rural divide, everything.

Every last one of these has been smashed. The BJP is now the largest party representing South India in the Lok Sabha. The BJP controls the entire North East. The BJP has touched 50% vote share in Uttar Pradesh. Hindi speaking states, non-Hindi speaking states, tribal states, rural states, urban states: BJP smashed all these barriers.

If ‘keeping BJP out’ is a strategy, it must be the worst one ever.

What does the opposition hope to achieve by keeping the single largest party in opposition benches? When has that ever worked out well for anyone?

They know exactly what is going to happen. The khichdi government will collapse in a heap. And the public will be extremely severe in punishing them. BJP is finally on course to winning its full majority in Maharashtra.

BJP used to have similar problems in Karnataka, remember? Strong player, but away from the majority. The party got its first big upgrade when Cong & JDS tied up after 2004 to keep single largest BJP out of power. This brought BJP to ~100 seats, just shy of a majority. They still had a problem because they were absent in the Old Mysore region, which accounts for 60 seats. Well, that problem was solved when Congress and JDS tied up in 2018.

In short, two betrayals of the popular mandate by Congress & JDS and BJP finally had no problems sweeping Karnataka.

How do you think Maharashtra is going to go? The BJP is a 100 seat player in the state but has last-mile problems in getting a majority. This betrayal should get them across the finishing line.

So why does the opposition stick to the ‘keep BJP out’ strategy? Haven’t they learned that it doesn’t work? What was the fate of the Mahagathbandhan in Uttar Pradesh recently? No lessons learned?

Because, the opposition quite simply has lost the drive, the will and energy to go to the people. Staying in power through contacts and management skills can be very useful, but it has its limits.

Read: BJP has shown ruthlessness in the game of power politics, and it is good for ideology too

Congress did master this skill during the UPA years. With a mere 145 seats, Sonia Gandhi managed to run the government for a full five-year term. It is indeed quite spectacular. In Maharashtra, Congress has been pushed to a pathetic fourth position but manages to get a toehold on power thanks to negotiation skills. This is really all that Congress politics has been since 2004: managing people, moving pawns on the chessboard, whether before the scenes or behind them.

But look what it did to them. The Congress got so involved in manipulating pawns on the Lutyens chessboard that it forgot elections happen among the people. It tried to win the 2019 elections not through campaigning but through subterfuge. Planting stories, conspiracy theories, calling in favours, activating old contacts in India and abroad and the like. Reaching out to every duck with a quack who had an axe to grind in caste politics, student politics, legal activism, stand up comedy, anything. Before they knew it, the tail was wagging the dog. And they went nowhere.

Congress probably hasn’t noticed that they got ten years in power, but couldn’t use the time to revive the party in a single state. Not in Uttar Pradesh, nor Bihar, nor Bengal. Not even to build themselves up in Maharashtra, where they had their Chief Minister. And they managed to reduce themselves to dust in Andhra Pradesh.

And so it goes on in Maharashtra. So-called ‘secular forces’ manage to stay in power. But how long? Is there a Plan B for when things fall apart, as they will shortly?

As for BJP, it is back to the drawing board in Maharashtra. 100 seats aren’t enough. The majority mark is 145, not 100. No discounts for BJP it seems and no lucky breaks. Which might be the best thing ever. Because the only way to get to that 145 figure is to assess every weakness, address every shortcoming and win the confidence of one and all. Full speed ahead.

Congress seeks disqualification of Rae Bareli MLA Aditi Singh after serving show cause notice last month

Congress party has filed a petition seeking disqualification of its Rae Bareli MLA Aditi Singh. Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra had filed the petition before the Speaker of Vidhan Sabha Hriday Narayan Dikshit today.

The petition stated that Singh had defied party’s whip to boycott the special session of the state assembly on October 2, organized by the Uttar Pradesh government to mark 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.

“She had been indulging in a number of activities that are not in consonance with the party’s thought and action. She was the first one to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on abrogation of Article 370. Then her sudden appearance for the special session was a violation of the party whip,” said a party leader.

Last month the Congress Rae Bareli MLA was served a show-cause notice for defying party’s boycott call during the special assembly session called by the BJP in UP Assembly to discuss sustainable development goals defined by the UN.

Congress workers, too, had protested outside Aditi Singh’s residence for attending the session which was boycotted by the Congress party and had asked for her resignation.

Aditi Singh had, however, justified her decision to attend the session by invoking Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy. “If we want to pay true tributes to Mahatma Gandhi we will have to follow his path and it can only happen if the country develops,” she had said.

In the past as well, she has refused to toe the party line on certain matters and sided with larger national interests. Singh had gone against the party’s stand on abrogation of Article 370 and supported the move. Singh had also stayed away from the elaborate ‘peace march’ organised led by Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Lucknow on Gandhi Jayanti.

Recently, Congress had expelled 11 senior party leaders including former MLAs, MPs and ministers from Uttar Pradesh.

All India Muslim Personal Law Board to file a review petition in the Ram Janmabhoomi case in first week of December

0

The Supreme Court in a historic decision had established that the Hindus have a right on the entire 67-acre Ram Janmabhoomi and had granted an alternate 5-acre land to the Muslims to build their Masjid. After weeks of back and forth, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has decided to file a review petition in the Ram Janmabhoomi, Ayodhya case.

AIMPLB said that they will ‘exercise their constitutional right’ and file a review petition in the Ayodhya case during the first week of December. They also said that the decision of the Sunni Waqf Board not to file a review petition in the case won’t affect the AIMPLB legally.

Interestingly, AIMPLB said that “all Muslim organisations” are with the AIMPLB and are on the same page.

Earlier, the Sunni Waqf Board had decided against filing a review petition in the Ayodhya case.

The Sunni Central Waqf Board was also to discuss whether to accept the 5 acres land to be offered by the government or not. As per reports, the board has put off the discussion and has stated that they will deliberate it after the land options are provided by the government.

The Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind (JuH), a key Muslim litigant in the Ayodhya title suit which has been indulging in constant rabblerousing since Supreme Court’ historic verdict in the Ram Janmabhoomi case, had also taken a U-turn and said that it will not file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s Ayodhya verdict.

“Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has passed a resolution that it will not file a review petition against the Supreme Court verdict on Babri Masjid & mosques managed by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Waqf properties,” it had said.

Following the verdict, many prominent Muslims welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict, while several others expressed strong disapproval of the same. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi couldn’t stomach the fact that the court has finally ordered the construction of a Ram Temple at the Ram Janmabhoomi site where the Mughals had destroyed a previously existing temple.

With the aim of whipping up a frenzy among Muslims of India, Asaduddin Owaisi continued his harangue against the verdict saying, “I want my masjid back”. Many other ‘liberal-secular’ elements had also exhorted the principal litigant Sunni Waqf Board to file a review petition.

Chinese social media giant TikTok bans user for highlighting the plight of Uighur Muslims in China

A user on the video sharing app TikTok shared a video where she attempted to spread awareness about the ongoing persecution of Uighur Muslims in China. She began her video with the words, “Hi, guys. I’m going to teach you guys how to get long lashes.” Then, after a few seconds, she said, “Use your phone that you’re using right now to search up what’s happening in China, how they’re getting concentration camps, throwing innocent Muslims in there.”

The video gained huge popularity on the app, garnering nearly five lakh likes. However, Feroza Aziz’s account was soon suspended on the app. ByteDance spokesman, Josh Gartner, said Aziz was blocked from her TikTok account because she violated the terms and conditions by posting a video that contained an image of Osama bin Laden through an earlier account.

The suspension of Aziz’s account on TikTok after she highlighted the Chinese persecution of Uighur Muslims has triggered concerns about the Communist regime’s censorship patterns on the social networking sites it owns and the businesses it exerts influence over. As we have reported earlier, TikTok is owned by a Chinese company called ByteDance which is often touted to be the world’s most valuable start-up.

Read” China calls the video of shackled and blindfolded Uighur Muslims ‘normal’, defends repression of its Muslim population

It is widely known that Chinese businesses are intimately linked to the Chinese regime and its foreign policy. The Communist party uses businesses as means to undermine the interests of foreign nations. TikTok is no different and it has sent the alarm bells ringing in the highest echelons of foreign governments.

Furthermore, there is no such thing as ‘independent businesses’ in China. Even multinational corporations that operate in the country must avoid incurring the wrath of the regime in any manner whatsoever. For instance, the NBA had to prostrate profusely before the Chinese regime and apologize vehemently after one of the team owners tweeted in favour of the Hong Kong protesters. China was not pleased and the NBA was overeager to make peace with it in order to preserve its business interests.

Social Media censorship, however, is not unique to Chinese owned platforms such as TikTok. Facebook, Twitter and Google, too, enforce ridiculous censorship on its platforms that consistent with the opinions of the US establishment. Therefore, in the current instance, TikTok’s conduct is not out of sync with how other social media giants operate. However, it does raise concerns about the overarching influence on narrative that Big Tech enjoys and can enforce.

Uttar Pradesh: Police officer suspended for posting ‘indecent photographs’ of PM Modi on social media

A police sub-inspector, posted at the Kadipur police station in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh was suspended from his duties for allegedly posting objectionable photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media.

According to police, sub-inspector Anand Gautam allegedly uploaded indecent photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media and also made derogatory comments on Union Home Minister, the BJP and the RSS office bearers. Sultanpur Superintendent of Police (SP), Himanshu Kumar, added “Gautam also accused the government of working against the interest of a particular caste.”

After receiving the information from the cyber cell of police on Sunday, Kumar suspended the officer with immediate effect and ordered an inquiry into the matter. He has asked a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) rank officer to review Gautam’s Twitter and Facebook posts which allegedly includes six posts against the Prime Minister and four against the RSS and BJP leaders. These posts were reportedly made between 2016 and 2018 and were not deleted despite warnings.

“The suspended officer has been asked to explain his conduct. The social media cell of the district police will review the social media accounts of all police personnel. A warning has been issued to all to refrain from objectionable posts,” the SP said. The posts were reportedly highly objectionable and against the police manual amounting to indiscipline.

Argentina: Two Catholic priests sentenced to 40 years for the sexual abuse of deaf children at a Church-run school

0

An Argentinian court has sentenced two Catholic priests to more than 40 years in prison in Mendoza on Monday after they were found guilty of the sexual abuse of as many as 10 deaf children of a Catholic-run school.

Incidentally, Pope Francis is from Argentina and it has been reported that Church officials, including Pope Francis, were made aware of allegations against one of the convicts as early as in 2014 but the church did not begin an investigation until after he was arrested in 2017. Many Argentinians protested against the refusal by the Church to close down the school and prevent the abusers from having access to their victims.

On Monday, a three-judge panel in the city of Mendoza sentenced Father Nicola Corradi to 42 years and Father Horacio Corbacho to 45 years, as well as gardener Armando Gómez to 18 years, for 20 counts of abuse from 2005 to 2016 at the Antonio Provolo Institute for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Children.

Shockingly, Father Nicola Corradi was earlier investigated for abusing children at the institute’s school in Verona, Italy, in the 1970s, but was never charged.

Sergio Salinas, a lawyer for several victims, called for Pope Francis to “make a public apology.” Salinas said in an interview on Monday that the church has not acted honourably in this case, “It hasn’t just failed to give evidence, it has hidden information,” said Salinas furthering, “It has failed to recognize the facts and has mocked the victims by not recognizing them as such and saying that their testimony is unbelievable.”

The Catholic Church across the globe has faced an avalanche of child sexual abuse crime in the last few decades and Pope Francis has been long accused of helping to cover up such sexual misconducts.

Read: Pope Francis and Catholic Church shamed after Chile gets tough against child sexual abuse scandal

In fact, last year, former papal nuncio (ambassador) to the United States, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, had unleashed a new controversy on the Vatican as he claimed in an open letter that Pope Francis was aware of the sexual abuse allegations against Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI’s sanctions against him, and yet did nothing to punish but went to elevate him to a position where he was helping choose powerful American Bishops. Vigano had also called for the resignation of the Pope.

Recently, three more former altar boys had accused two Catholic priests of sexually abusing them inside Vatican Church. These fresh allegations come just months after Catholic leaders had gathered for an unprecedented summit at the Vatican to tackle widespread paedophilia within the church. At the close of the summit in February, Pope Francis promised the church would “spare no effort” in bringing abusers to justice and would not cover up or underestimate abuse.
