Raising concerns over the misuse of freebies offered by Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government ahead of 2020 assembly elections, Delhi High Court on Wednesday said that the ‘Farishte Dilli Ke’ scheme was being ‘hijacked’ by touts and steps should be taken to prevent misuse.
Delhi Government’s ‘Farishte Dilli Ke’ scheme was launched few weeks back whereby Delhi government was to bear all medical expenses of victims of accidents, acid attacks and burn injuries in Delhi government hospitals. The scheme also gives Rs 2,000 ‘reward’ to good samaritans for taking the victim to hospitals. The HC observed that if someone has a minor injury in their homes, these touts insist that they go to the hospitals. This overburdens the hospitals. The court added that if 10 people are benefitting from a scheme, there may be 40 others who may be misusing it.
The court observed that while Delhi government’s intentions are good, the good samaritan scheme could also be misused. If someone falls down in bathroom, he could be admitted as road accident victim, the court observed.
Pulling up Delhi government, the court said that they should address real concerns like improved hygiene facilities, infrastructure and availability of live-saving equipments. The court was hearing a PIL filed by a school teacher from Karawal Nagar in Delhi highlighting the lack of medical facilities and crumbling infrastructure in Delhi government hospitals.
The Patiala House Court today quashed the revision petition filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal against summoning order issued against him concerning a defamation case filed by BJP supporter Vikas Pandey. Following this development, Kejriwal will now have to face trial for spreading a slanderous video uploaded by pro-AAP blogger Dhruv Rathee.
The Delhi CM had appealed against the summon issued by a magistrate at a session court in Patiala house court. In the judgement, Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar said, “the impugned order has dealt with all the relevant aspects of the issues involved at the stage of summoning. At this stage, the court has only to see if there are sufficient grounds to proceed further or not and if the impugned order is weighed on this scale, then I find no illegality, impropriety or irregularity in the order.”
The defamation case pertains to a slanderous video uploaded by pro-AAP blogger Dhruv Rathee, in which he had contended that Vikas Pandey was an active member of the BJP IT cell and he offered to pay a bribe of Rs 50 lakhs to Mahavir Prasad, supposedly an ex BJP IT cell member, to defame him. Though in the video Rathee claims to have advised Mahavir to record his conversations, in the follow-up video, he regrets that he has no recording of “Rs 50 lakh bribe offer”, purportedly made by Vikas. With no tangible evidence to prove his allegations, the YouTube blogger still went ahead to level atrocious accusations against Pandey.
In addition to this, Rathee also contended that Abhishek Mishra was used by Vikas Pandey in order to offer a bribe to Mahavir Prasad. However, there was nothing in the call recording to allude that Pandey asked Mishra to bribe Prasad. In fact, Rathee himself concedes in the video that the evidence in his possession is insufficient to back his allegations.
Kejriwal had shared this video by Rathee, thus lending credence to his lies and misinformation and adding to the vilification endured by Pandey. Vikas, a software engineer by profession, and a strong Modi supporter had then filed a defamation suit against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and YouTube blogger Dhruv Rathee.
Another instance of the gross incompetence of the mainstream media, driven by malice, has come to the fore. On Tuesday, Srinivasan Jain of NDTV fueled a dubious conspiracy theory about the involvement of one Madi Sharma who apparently sent out the invitation to the Members of the European Union Parliament (MEPs). The MEPs visited Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
The invitation to the European MP’s was sent out by someone called Madi Sharma. She promised a ‘prestigious VIP meeting’ with India’s Prime Minister, in addition to the Kashmir trip. (Screenshot of her mail exchange with MEP Chris Davies, released by his office) @OnReality_Checkpic.twitter.com/6giTXCCjaq
Srinivasan Jain provided some superficial information about the woman and asked the question, ‘who is Madi Sharma, and what are her credentials to deliver on such a big promise?’ Since Jain calls himself a journalist, one would have expected him to provide an answer to the question as well but he did not. Instead, he only provided very superficial information which only fueled the mystery around Madi Sharma’s identity.
Her Twitter bio (https://t.co/8Zz8ADDltt) say this: ‘Social Capitalist : International Business Broker , Education Entrepreneur; Speaker You must be the Change you want to see’. She also appears to be linked to this women’s NGO https://t.co/3rkPud0fMu
Jain ended his conspiracy theory tweet thread by asserting that it was unclear how any of the credentials he shared on Twitter makes Madi Sharma qualified enough to organize a meeting between MEPs and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. One would expect journalists to do their necessary homework first before engaging in meaningless speculations that only fuels distrust against the Indian government without good reasons. However, journalistic integrity appears to have been thrown down the toilet here.
As it turns out, Madi Sharma is a member of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). Importantly, she has been a member of the EESC since 2002. Furthermore, she was made a UK member of the forum through an appointment made by the Prime Minister of the UK himself. In the said Committee, External Relations are one of her areas of interest.
The EESC is a forum for “consultation, dialogue and consensus between representatives from all the different sectors of “organised civil society”, including employers, trade unions and groups such as professional and community associations, youth organisations, women’s groups, consumers, environmental campaigners and many more. It was “set up in 1957 by the Treaty of Rome, to advise EU decision-makers and ensure that ordinary people across the continent have a say in Europe’s development.”
Madi Sharma’s biography on EESC reads, “Madi is an Entrepreneur who founded and runs the Madi Group, a group of International private sector & not for profit companies, and NGOs. The philosophy is to create innovative ideas tailored to local action which can achieve global impacts beneficial to a sustainable society. She is also a member of The European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels. Madi is a public speaker internationally, particularly in the field of entrepreneurship, female entrepreneurship, diversity; gender balance and her passion for corporate social responsibility CSR. Her presentations, spoken from the heart, motivate and inspire and seek to make others consider their ability to affect change. It is now tagged #MadiEffect “You must be the change you want to see” Ghandi – “No Excuses” Madi”.
Apart from being a member of the EESC, Madi Sharma has numerous other accomplishments to her credit, which are mentioned on her personal website as indicated by the official website of the EESC itself. Her website states that she was “independently appointed to European Commission Vice –President Antonio Tajani’s Advisory Board for Industry & Enterprise” where she represented Entrepreneurship. Significantly, Madi Sharma is also the President of the EESC Committee On European Instruments for Human Rights and Democracy.
From Madi Sharma’s CV, it appears quite obvious that she is a well-connected individual who is well acquainted with the functioning of the European Union Parliament. As a member of the EESC and President of the EESC Committee On European Instruments for Human Rights and Democracy, it appears par for the course that she shares a professional relationship with the elected representatives of the European Union Parliament.
Henri Malosse, one of the people who visited Jammu and Kashmir, worked at the EESC since 1995 and was ultimately elected its President in 2013. Thus, for quite some time, Malosse and Madi Sharma worked together at the forum. And thus, one would expect them to be well acquainted with each other.
It took five minutes to access all this information about Madi Sharma on the internet. It’s a matter of great concern that Srinivasan Jain, who calls himself a journalist, could not bother to spend five minutes of time to verify the identity of a person before engaging in meaningless speculations. The Times of India in its report on Madi Sharma does mention her being a member of the EESC. News18, on the other hand, published a report which added more fuel to the fire but forgot to mention the most crucial aspect of her identity.
The Telegraph, a far-Left propaganda website, went into quite some detail about Madi Sharma. It even mentioned that Madi Sharma is a member of the EESC. The propaganda outlet said of the forum, “The EESC calls itself an advisory body which acts as a bridge between the EU and civil society.” It conveniently forgot to mention the fact that the EESC was formed through the Treaty of Rome in 1957. The Treaty of Rome is one of the two treaties forming the constitutional basis of the European Union. It is still considered one of the two most important treaties of the modern-day European Union. The Telegraph did not think it was important to mention this fact.
Srinivasan Jain and the media’s overeagerness in fueling meaningless speculation against her could either be attributed to their gross incompetence or their malicious desire to downplay the visit of EU delegation in an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the Indian government. In all probability, it is a combination of both.
Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has received an invitation from his ‘friend’ and an ‘angel‘, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for the inauguration of Kartarpur Corridor on November 9.
On behalf of PTI, Senator Faisal Javed Khan had a telephonic conversation with Navjot Singh Sidhu on the direction of PM Imran Khan and invited him to Pakistan on November 9.
This development came after India on Tuesday shared with Pakistan a list of 575 people who will be part of the first jatha to Gurudwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan through the Kartarpur corridor. Controversial leader Navjot Singh Sidhu was not a part of.
The group will be led by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh while Punjab CM Amarinder Singh, Union minister Hardeep Puri, Harsimrat Kaur Badal and MPs and MLAs from Punjab will also be part of the group.
According to a PTI report, Pakistan has denied permission for a composite delegation led by the Punjab government, along with representatives of SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) and DSGMC (Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee) to organise “Akhand path” (recital of holy scripture) and hold “Nagar kirtan” (religious procession) at Nankana Sahib.
Navjot Singh Sidhu had earlier created a stir when he had happily accepted the invitation extended to him by the Pakistan Foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to attend the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Pakistan side of the proposed Kartapur Corridor while Punjab CM Amarinder Singh had said that due to continued terrorist attacks in Punjab, killings of Indian soldiers by armed forces of Pakistan, he will not be attending the event.
Similarly, Sidhu had landed himself in controversy when he visited Pakistan to attend the oath-taking ceremony of Imran Khan and hugged Pakistani Army chief Qamar Bajwa. Sidhu came under a barrage of attacks both from the ruling BJP and also his fellow party leaders such as Punjab CM Amarinder Singh.
During his controversial Pakistan visit in January, Sidhu had said that he brought up the issue of opening of the Kartarpur Corridor with Pakistani authorities and his “friend” Imran Khan.
Owing to his contentious conduct, Sidhu and Amrinder Singh have had an uncordial relationship in the past. Earlier, the Punjab CM had criticised Sidhu for his acts during Imran Khan’s swearing-in ceremony as PM of Pakistan. At that time, Amarinder Singh had said, “every day our jawans are getting martyred. To hug their Chief General Bajwa…I am against this,” The CM had also clarified the Sidhu went to Pakistan on a personal capacity and on an official visit, disassociating the Punjab government from the controversial visit. Sidhu had resiged from the Punjab government due to such differences with the CM.
Congress-era union minister P Chidambaram will go back to Tihar jail for the next 14 days as a Delhi court on Wednesday rejected his interim bail plea on health grounds and ordered to extend the judicial custody until November 13, in connection with INX Media case.
The Special Court in Delhi on October 23 had extended P Chidambaram’s judicial custody by a week till October 30 in the money laundering case related to INX Media company. He was allowed western toilet, home-cooked food, medicines and a separate cell during his stay in the jail.
In today’s hearing, the Enforcement Directorate sought only one-day custody. But, the judge decided to send him to judicial custody instead.
After spending Diwali in Tihar jail, the UPA stalwart was reportedly shifted to AIIMS, New Delhi on October 28, after his health deteriorated. The 74-year-old former finance minister was taken to the premier medical institution after he had complained of stomach ache. His condition was found to be stable by the doctors at AIIMS, and he was discharged from the hospital after spending some time there.
The Congress leader has also moved Delhi High Court seeking interim bail on health grounds, two days after he was taken to AIIMS for gastrointestinal health complications. Citing health reasons, Chidambaram had sought the high court’s permission to consult and get examined by his regular doctor at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) in Hyderabad.
Representing Chidambaram, counsel Kapil Sibal in the court argued that the veteran Congress leader was ailing from multiple diseases, including dyslipidemia and irritable bowel disease. He also claimed that Chidambaram has lost considerable weight and his health was rapidly deteriorating in Tihar jail. However, the court extended his judicial custody maintaining that he could be shifted to AIIMS if his health deteriorated.
On October 5, P Chidambaram was taken to AIIMS after he complained of stomach ache. However, he was brought back to Tihar Jail the same evening. P Chidambaram was held up in Tihar Jail since September 5 this year in the INX Media scam in which both CBI and ED have been probing his role in the case.
The former Union Minister was arrested by the CBI P Chidambaram on August 21 on the charges of misusing his position as finance minister under UPA regime and granting several clearances to INX Media company which had received overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007, during Chidambaram’s tenure as finance minister.
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa today asserted that his government is contemplating over expunging references to Tipu Sultan from the textbooks. Yediyurappa said that Tipu Sultan was not a freedom fighter and he doesn’t deserve a place in the school textbooks.
Karnataka Chief Minister, BS Yediyurappa: About Tipu Jayanti, we are going to drop everything and we are also thinking to drop everything in the textbooks about him. pic.twitter.com/sAGcsqOUVv
“We are going to take decision. We are not going to allow such things to happen. We are going to withdraw everything,” the CM said while talking to media.
Following the statement by Yediyurappa, Karnataka BJP tweeted saying that the “textbooks must be rewritten to portray the real Tipu Sultan to our Children”. They added that children “should be made aware of the Tyrant’s cruelty against Hindus & his anti Kannada rule.”
By ending public celebrations of Tipu Jayanti, CM @BSYBJP has restored dignity to Kannadigas.
As the next step, textbooks must be rewritten to portray the real Tipu Sultan to our Children.
They should be made aware of the Tyrant’s cruelty against Hindus & his anti Kannada rule. https://t.co/kp9bb1FR2o
The controversy surrounding Tipu Sultan was reignited by Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa ahead of the Tipu Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan observed in November. “Never Tipu Jayanti – we are going to drop everything, even in textbooks also – that also we are thinking,” Yediyurappa said.
According to reports, the controversy was brewing from the last couple of days after a BJP MLA from Madikeri, Appachu Ranjan wrote a letter to the state education minister saying that Tipu Sultan is not portrayed in the right manner in the textbooks and thus asking all references to him be removed from the textbooks.
Tipu Sultan has been a polarising figure in the state of Karnataka where people’s opinion about him range from him being a fierce freedom fighter to a tyrannical despot.
The MLA who first suggested to remove Tipu Sultan from school textbooks belonged to Madikeri, a town located in Kodagu region which was an area much affected during the reign of Tipu Sultan. Incidentally, it also witnessed the strongest protests when the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah started celebrating Tipu Jayanti in the state.
Earlier this year, after coming to power in the state, BS Yediyurappa had overturned the previous Congress government’s decision of celebrating Tipu Jayanti by ordering a state-wide cancellation of all Tipu Jayanti celebrations observed in Karnataka.
While the BJP considers Tipu Sultan as a cruel oppressor who committed unspeakable atrocities against his Hindu subjects, the Congress party unwaveringly regard him as a freedom fighter.
Mamata Banerjee, who is known to be unsparing towards dissenting opinions, once again gets a 28-year-old youth arrested for allegedly posting a derogatory remark against her on social media on Tuesday night. Chandan Bhattacharya was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by Trinamool Youth Congress district president Shantanu Banerjee.
“We arrested Chandan Bhattacharya after a complaint was filed against him with Singur police station. A probe has been initiated in the case,” Superintendent of Police Tathagata Basu said.
According to the complainant, Chandan Bhattacharya, a resident of Singur in Hooghly district, had posted the “derogatory comment” on Facebook on the day of Kali puja.
“Chandan Bhattacharya had posted the comment on October 28. Party workers could not trace his residence that day. However, the next day, they found out that he lives in Singur. Following this, I lodged a police complaint against him,” he said.
The incident came days after Congress leader Sanmoy Bandopadhyay was arrested from North 24 Parganas district for allegedly violating the Cyber Crime Act. Leader of the Congress party in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had then accused the police of arresting Bandopadhyay for circulating posts critical of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. “Bandopadhyay’s arrest is a classic example of the intolerance of the highest order”, Chowdhury had said.
West Bengal chief minister and TMC head Mamata Banerjee has several times in the past expressed her intolerance and disapproval for conflicting opinions.
Priyanka Sharma, BJP youth leader had been arrested for posting a meme mocking Banerjee on her Facebook Timeline on May 9. The MET Gala 2019 themed meme superimposed Mamata’s face on Priyanka Chopra’s body. She was arrested and produced in Howrah Court.
On March 27, Tina Biswas, an author of novel critical of WB CM Mamata Banerjee had alleged harassment during her book launch at Kolkata.
Recently, a Bengali movie, Bhobishyoter Bhoot (Ghost of the Future), directed by Anik Dutta, which took a dig at Mamata Banerjee’s style of functioning, was pulled off theatres. It was only after a public outcry that theatres in Kolkata have started screening the film again.
Similarly, a revising committee of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had refused to clear movie named Kangal Malsat for screening, after claiming it “insulted” Mamata Banerjee. Likewise, Teen Kanya’s screening was stopped by Mamata since it resembled the Park Street rape case of 2012.
Last year a man hailing from Tripura’s Dhalai district was arrested for allegedly making derogatory remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in a social media post.
As per reports, one Arunachal Dutta Choudhary, an employee of West Bengal Health Service was suspended over a Facebook post, which described the adverse condition in his hospital which has been facing a wave of dengue patients in the year 2017 as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee holds the health portfolio in the state government.
Mamata had also banned books by 1981 batch IPS officer Nazrul Islam which were critical of Mamata government not delivering what was promised.
The list of bans is long but perhaps the most absurd was the incident where Mamata’s police arrested a businessman for ranting about traffic conditions on Facebook and not apologizing about it.
Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, in a series of tweets on Wednesday, demanded a ‘strong investigation’ into the murder of labourers from her state in Kashmir to discover the ‘real truth’. She said that no political activities were going on in Kashmir and the law and order is the responsibility of the Central government, therefore, a ‘strong investigation’ is needed.
We, therefore, demand a strong investigation so that the real truth comes out. We are deputing Shri Sanjay Singh ADG South Bengal to find out details from them.(2/3)
Mamata Banerjee also said that Sanjay Singh, ADG of South Bengal, has been deputed to learn the details from the authorities in Kashmir and elected representatives from her party have reached Murshidabad to meet the victims’ families.
Our party MPs and MLAs have reached Murshidabad to meet the family members of victims.
Our government is providing Rs Five lakh each to the victim’s family and render all assistance to them.(3/3)
In a horrific terror attack, six labourers were shot dead by terrorists in Katrusu village of Kulgam in South Kashmir on Tuesday. All six persons were from West Bengal and were daily wage earners. Five persons died immediately in the attack, while one person was critically injured, and was rushed to Srinagar for treatment. The injured person was identified as Zahooruddin. Later, he succumbed to his injuries.
Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani on Tuesday said the slowdown in the Indian economy is temporary and the recent measures taken by the government will help reverse the trend in the coming quarters.
Speaking at Saudi Arabia’s annual investment forum, also known as ‘Davos in the desert’, the billionaire expressed confidence that the string of reforms which has been introduced by the government in the last few months will soon boost the Indian economy. “The current slowdown is temporary,” Ambani said at the opening plenary of the third edition of Future Investment Initiative (FII) in Riyadh assuring that reforms undertaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government since August will bear fruits in the next few quarters.
“The world is transitioning with the introduction of new technologies – they are transforming the global economy, and while they bring uncertainty, they also bring opportunity,” Ambani said.
“India’s slight economic slowdown will reverse in the coming quarters. What I see happening in the past 2-3 years is transformation,” said Ambani, assuring that “As a businessman and as an investor, I am all in, in terms of investing in this country.”
The Indian economy has seen a growth rate decline in each of the past five quarters. The growth rate fell to 5 per cent in April-June 2019 from 8 per cent recorded last year. The government has taken a string of policy measures over the past couple of months to shore up the economy and revive credit. The measures include attempts to ease NBFCs’ liquidity positions by encouraging banks to purchase high-quality NBFC assets through credit guarantees and additional liquidity. Also, further capital is being injected into banks and the corporate tax rate was cut to their lowest level.
It is notable here that Mukesh Ambani’s RIL is in talks with Saudi Aramco over the sale of 20% of RIL’s business in India for USD 15 billion.
Prime Minister Modi, who was also in Saudi Arabia as the keynote speaker at this year’s FII listed the attractiveness of the Indian economy and invited global businessmen to invest in the country.
PM Modi at Future Investment Initiative (FII), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia): By 2024, we aim to invest US$ 100 Billion in refining, pipelines, gas terminals. I am happy that Saudi Aramco has decided to invest in West Coast Refinery Project – which will be the largest refinery of Asia. pic.twitter.com/82FbDiq68V
“Political predictability, the stability of policies and a large diverse market will ensure that your investment in India will be most profitable,” Modi had said promising that he and his team will help investors.
He said the government had undertaken major reforms and would continue to take measures to boost growth. He said the roadmap for the $5 trillion economy is ready. The PM also highlighted India’s sharp improvement in the World Bank’s ‘Ease of Doing’ business ranking where it had reached to 63rd position from 142 within five years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had landed in Riyadh on Monday for a two-day state visit. The Prime Minister delivered the keynote address at the Future Investment Initiative and also held bilateral talks with the top leadership of the Gulf Kingdom.
A memorandum of understanding was also signed to roll out RuPay card in the Kingdom, making Saudi Arabia the third country in the Persian Gulf after the UAE and Bahrain to introduce India’s digital payment system.
Leaving with a marked upswing in bilateral relations.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted, “Leaving with a marked upswing in bilateral relations. PM Narendra Modi departs from Riyadh after steering the India-Saudi relationship on an upward trajectory pointing towards greater collaboration in future.”
Vishwa Bhanu, a resident of Malad West, Mumbai, who is associated with the movie industry as an actor, wrote on Facebook on 17th October 2019 about the ordeal he suffered on the occasion of Diwali as a consequence of the intolerance of his Muslim neighbours. He said that his wife was not being allowed to light up their house on Diwali and he was forced to remove the lights.
In his complaint to the police, Vishwa Bhanu wrote:
Like every year, my wife Priyanka Sharma has been prevented from lighting candles and making her Rangoli on Diwali. Anti-social elements who live in the society, where Rehan Petiwala, Salim and Mustafa broke the lights. Every year they do this and even mock our God’s and Goddesses. On Bakra Eid, they force us to keep our door open and they slaughter goats in front of our house when they can do this elsewhere also. But I never said anything because it is their festival. Because we are Hindus, we are mocked, pressurised and a situation is being created that we will soon leave the area. For small things, they come to fight with us. I am mostly away for shooting and am concerned about my wife.
After the OpIndia report where Bhanu spoke about the ordeal he faced, he told us that the police was pressurising him to delete his Facebook post and had downplayed the entire incident as one of a minor dispute. Eventually, since Vishwa Bhanu too feared for his security, he wrote on Facebook that the matter had been sorted mutually.
Facebook post by Vishwa Bhanu
Thereafter, there was a litany of posts and articles that claimed Vishwa Bhanu was lying either for create panic or to get fame. The articles and posts also said that the Mumbai police had investigated and proven Bhanu was lying.
NDTV article
The PTI (Press Trust of India) agency feed was run by mostly every major news publication. From NDTV to Times of India and even Republic.
Interestingly, none of the mainstream media channels spoke to Vishwa Bhanu about what transpired and what his version of events was.
The Quint report
The one Leftist portal that did was The Quint.
The Quint headline
The Quint report was headlined “Leftist Atheist Becomes Poster Boy for Hindu Right-Wing on Diwali”. The insinuation was simple from the headline itself. The Quint implied that the incident was not communal and that it is the ‘Right-Wing’ that is turning it so.
The Quint article was written by Meghnad Bose essentially quoted Bhanu as saying:
“I am a communist and have always been opposed to the RSS, BJP and the Hindu right-wing. For example, I am completely against the mob lynchings that are happening in India, in the name of protecting the cow. Just as I am opposed to Hindu fundamentalism, I am similarly opposed to Muslim fundamentalism.”
The article then said that the argument was over the neighbour’s children getting an electric shock from the fairy lights and that Bhanu himself admitted that the children got a shock indeed.
The report then quotes Imran Khan, who is the main accused according to Bhanu and the neighbour who created the ruckus. Imran is quoted as saying that he had only asked Bhanu to lift the lights higher or put a tape on the cut wire, and the argument happened only when Bhanu’s wife, Priyanka refused to do so.
It also quotes the building secretary to insinuate that it was but a minor argument and there is nothing communal about the incident.
‘The Quint has misquoted me’, says Vishwa Bhanu, ‘it is the ‘right’ and Hindu organisations that stood with me despite ideological differences
After The Quint report was published, Vishwa Bhanu got in touch with OpIndia, distressed and angered. He said, he is being held responsible by media portals like The Quint and Lallantop and even the police officer in question and he would like to speak further about the facts of the case.
With respect to The Quint saying that he is a ‘communist’, Vishwa Bhanu said that he is an artist and has a background of being associated with Left theatre such as Jan Natya Manch several years ago. But on the basis of this, it is wrong to call him a “Leftist” or “Vampanthi”.
He said, “How am I a Leftist if I have done theatre with some people from the Left or if I stood up when some Muslim was wronged”. To The Quint saying that this response of his came after the reporter asked him about “Right-Wing Propaganda websites”, Vishwa Bhanu said that nobody from the ‘Right’ has used him. He said that through his work in theatre, he has opposed the “RSS ideology” but that was 20 years ago when he was a part of the theatre. He was not into political activism.
Vishwa Bhanu said that it is people from the so-called ‘Right’ who reached out to him and ensured help. He asserted that when individuals from Hindu organisations went to meet him after the incident, he told them categorically that he did not share their ideology and yet, they were willing to help him. He said despite having a difference of views, it is the Hindu organisations that helped him and said that all born-Hindus are brothers for them and if he needs anything, they will be there to help him out.
He said one Mr Balakrishnan, an old man who must be in his 60s came all the way from Chembur to meet him. In fact, when he was trying to find Bhanu’s house, nobody from the locality was telling him where he lived and yet, when Bhanu offered to go assist him, Mr Balakrishnan told him to not leave his house and that he will find him. Bhanu also said that he got immense strength from Jaago Hindu members visiting his house and offering assistance to him.
Mr and Mrs Bhanu’s anger with The Quint reporter and how their version was twisted
Vishwa Bhanu told OpIndia that he liked Meghnad when he went to meet them. He thought he was a young, fair journalist since he kept nodding along and agreeing that Bhanu and his wife’s plight was tragic. He even agreed that what happened with the family was wrong, but he never thought that he would misrepresent the entire incident in this fashion. Bhanu said that several people spoke to him and he narrated his ordeal, but it is out of his control when someone misrepresents it when they publish the story.
Vishwa Bhanu’s wife, Priyanka also spoke to OpIndia. She said that after speaking to the family, the reporter went out and started speaking to Imran Khan, the same neighbour who is mentioned in their complaint and had stopped them from celebrating Diwali. According to Priyanka, Imran was lying as he did earlier claiming that the children got a shock and that Priyanka had argued with him when he had asked them to either put the lights up higher or put a tape on the cut wire. At this point in time, Priyanka went out and intervened. Imran was lying about the lights being put on the floor. Bhanu, narrating the incident that transpired in front of the Quint reporter asks, “why would we put fairy lights on the ground?”.
When Priyanka spoke to OpIndia, she said that it was only after Imran started talking about the complaint, did the reporter ask her for a copy of the complaint they had filed with the police. Furious at the line of questioning, Priyanka refused to give Meghnad a copy and told him that the complaint copy had already been reported and he can take it from there. Priyanka said that she got angry because he didn’t ask for the complaint earlier but only after Imran Khan mentioned the details in a twisted manner.
The Quint in the report writes that Vishwa Bhanu had agreed that Imran Khan’s child indeed did get a shock from the lights.
The Quint writes:
Bhanu agreed that the child got a shock from the wire. He did, however, object to some alleged statements made after the argument erupted.
Bhanu disputed this and called it a misrepresentation of what he said. He said he didn’t agree per se but said in a matter of fact manner that he may have got a shock but it obviously wasn’t severe and the kids were playing in that very spot later also. He narrated that while his wife was putting up the lights, kids were playing in the area and claimed that one of them got a slight shock. The mother and some other women came to the house and started asking them to pull the lights down. While they went inside the house, Imran and other Muslim men started touching the lights over and over again and mocking that they were getting an electric shock from the lights.
While this was happening, they broke the lights and according to Priyanka, a man named Salim told them that they should ‘find some other option’ and not celebrate Diwali like this. Bhanu, angered says that how is not “Hindu-Muslim”? When Muslims celebrate Bakr-Eid, do Hindus go tell Muslims to ‘find other ways’ of celebrating their festival? Why should Hindus find ‘other ways’ and not celebrate as they wish? She says that they have an issue if they make rangolis or put up lights, but how else will Hindus celebrate Diwali? Priyanka claims that Imran and others were lying because, at that time, the plug of the lights had been pulled out. She asks how Imran and other could even get an electric shock if the lights were not plugged in at that moment.
Their grouse with the Mumbai police
Vishwa Bhanu says that it was the Mumbai police that had told him to delete his earlier Facebook post and then write that the matter had been settled mutually. According to Bhanu, the Mumbai police officials told him that he should do this so law and order can be maintained. He was told, according to Bhanu, that if he doesn’t take his post down, it could cause a law and order problem and because of his post in Mumbai, a state like Karnataka can also burn if there is a backlash against Muslims of the state. “Agar aap aise karenge to kitne Muslims ko maar diya jaaye jahan Hindu bahusankhya main hain”, Bhanu claims the police told him in order to get him to delete his post and say that the matter had been sorted.
Bhanu says that it is the Mumbai police who told him to make the statement that the matter had been sorted amicably, but it is now “wrong for them to use it to claim that I was lying or I was wrong”. They cannot construe his silence as a sign of him being wrong.
It might be recalled that on the day of Diwali, Bhanu had claimed that even while he was at the police station, he was being asked by the police, the building secretary and the Muslims to let it go. He had, in fact, claimed that he was being threatened by the Muslim youth in the police station as well.
Bhanu claims that after the entire fiasco, a day after Diwali the Mumbai police had visited again and told them to put the lights back up for Diwali. Allegedly, the police told him that since he had tagged the Prime Minister, the case will be monitored and they will be questioned about whether he could celebrate Diwali or not.
Tweet where Vishwa Bhanu had tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Bhanu has also said that Jagdev kept saying that it was Bhanu’s fault and kept ‘scolding Bhanu’ every time he protested that version. This was, according to Bhanu, told him to him by Jagdev Kalapad, the senior inspector of Malvali police station, the same inspector that The Quint reports as saying that it was a minor argument and there was no Hindu-Muslim angle to the incident. He has also been quoted as saying that there are other Hindu families in the area and they celebrated Diwali without incident.
The building secretary and other Hindu families
Vishwa Bhanu said that some other Hindu families live there on rent and that is the reason why they are scared to talk about this incident or how Hindu families are treated in the colony.
The Quint also quotes the building secretary, Gundu Radekar as saying that it was a minor argument and in the heat of the moment things might have been said. Vishwa Bhanu, however, had a different take. He said that many times earlier, Radekar who is an aged man had said that he is toothless in the society and nobody listens to him. He had also been angry over the conduct of certain Muslims of the locality. Bhanu had expected Radekar to stand by him but was disappointed at his response.
When he purchased the house, he says that the situation was different. There were many Hindu families. But now, they have mostly left due to this environment and only a few are left. He said that they keep the building secretary unchanged because they want to show that they have a “Hindu building secretary”. He said that the building secretary, as well as certain other Hindu families, are not speaking up because of the environment of fear.
The angst of being left alone
Vishwa Bhanu expressed angst of being left alone and almost victimised for speaking out. He said several of his friends are Muslims, but none of them has approached him to find out what happened or how he was. He said that his theatre friends and his Muslim friends are sharing articles with him that claim Bhanu is lying and questioning him about why he lied and did what he did. He is almost being told that it is a Muslim dominated industry and he will not get work in the industry after this. Though Bhanu thinks that the industry won’t care about it.
He said that to forget what happened, he went to the gym and even there, people were passing comments and questioning him. He said people kept telling him that he had become famous and questioning him about why he lied.
Bhanu also expressed angst about the secretary and the other Hindu families keeping quiet about what happened.
He said is amused to see the reports by NDTV and other news portals since many from NDTV know him well and know that he would not lie about something like this considering he has fought for Muslim rights in the past too. He said many people from NDTV and the communist parties, like Brinda Karat, Yechury etc used to watch his plays but none of them has bothered to stand up for him.
Who used him? The Left? Or the Right?
With portals like The Quint insinuating that he became the “poster boy” for the “right”, it was important to understand whether Bhanu felt “used” by the “right”. To this, Bhanu said that the “right” has not used him and the humanity shown by the right is something that the left should learn from.
He says whatever ‘wing’, whether the theatre wing or the Left-wing or political wing should have at least shown humanity and found out what happened, but none of them bothered. He said he has done many plays where he stood up for Muslims, but he is now realising that there is genuinely a problem in India.
He says that if they are hell-bent of calling him a “Leftist”, then they should hear that he has not left “Leftists” who didn’t even bother showing up for him. He says that at least the “Right” reached out to him and offered unconditional support, in person, through media or even by connecting on Facebook. If he is a Leftist, then where are the Leftists?
“Agar main Leftist hoon, to main aaj se chhod deta hoon Leftism”, he said.
