A few days back, OpIndia had published a report calling out Aajtak news for slandering the Hindu festival of ‘Karwa Chauth’ by mentioning it in their headlines that a husband had severed his wife’s tongue on the day of ‘Karwa Chauth’.

OpIndia had pointed it out that despite the perpetrator and the victim both being non-Hindus, Aaj Tak had mentioned the Hindu festival of Karwa Chauth in describing the barbaric incident.

Now, Aaj Tak has updated its headlines, removing the controversial mention of ‘Karwa Chauth’ in it.

A day after the Hindu festival of ‘Karwa Chauth’, Aaj Tak News published a report with a controversial headline saying “On the day of Karwa Chauth, Husband’s brutality against his wife, severed wife’s tongue with a blade”. However, the incident was a barbaric case of domestic abuse where a Muslim man has beaten up his second wife and had severed her tongue.

The incident pertained to Saraiya village of Muzaffarpur, where a man named Mohammad Shafiq had severed the tongue of his second wife Meena Khatun.

Perhaps, in a bid to sensationalise the episode, news channel Aaj Tak maligned the Hindu festival of ‘Karwa Chauth’ by giving an egregious twist in their headlines to convey that a brutality was committed by a husband on the day of ‘Karwa Chauth’, the day when Hindu women generally fast for their husband’s long and healthy life. The inclusion of ‘Karwa Chauth’ in the headlines alluded that a practising Hindu husband must have committed the despicable atrocity upon her wife.

Heeding to OpIndia’s report and the criticism directed towards it for its blatant Hinduphobia of spuriously mentioning ‘Karwa Chauth’ in its headlines without it having any link with the atrocity, Aaj Tak has now dropped the reference to ‘Karwa Chauth’ in their report and updated their headline.

During elections, it is a regular sight to topmost political leaders patiently waiting in queues for their turn to vote. There are no VIPs in polling booths, as every voter has equal right of one vote, and most politicians across the party lines respect that. But sometimes some politicians believe it is beneath their dignity to wait in a queue at a polling booth, and the latest example of the same is Congress leader and former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

A video has emerged which show that Hooda bypassed several women waiting in a line to move ahead and cast his vote during the Haryana Assembly elections today. Today Bhupinder Singh Hooda along with his family reached a polling booth in Rohtak to cast their votes. But instead of waiting in a line as per norms, Hooda and one of his associates started to push women, who were standing in a disciplined queue, out of his way and moved ahead bypassing the voters who had reached the polling booth before him.

After exercising his voting right, Hooda tweeted that he along with his family voted without any fear and partiality, which is ironical because just moments ago several women made way for him out of fear of his power and position.

Bhupinder Singh Hooda has served as the chief minister of Haryana for two terms from 2005 to 2014, and is the leader of the opposition in the current assembly. Security heightened across Delhi ahead of Diwali, 400 sensitive buildings on JeM radar including PMO, Parliament House

Security has been beefed up in Delhi after a terror threat alert was sounded that Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) was planning to target over 400 sensitive buildings and markets in the national capital ahead of Diwali.

A Delhi Police official told IANS, “Rohini, North-East, North-West, North, East, Central, New Delhi and Dwarka — eight of the 15 districts in Delhi are considered sensitive.” These districts have the highest number of sensitive buildings. New Delhi alone has 200 buildings identified as sensitive and in total, there are 425 buildings that have been identified as sensitive.

In addition to buildings like the Prime Minister’s Office, Sena Bhavan, Parliament House and Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi district that is always deemed sensitive, now markets like Connaught Palace and Khan market have been added to the list. The Jama Masjid in Central Delhi district, Delhi Police Headquarters, Rouse Avenue Court, Laxmi Nagar, Preet Vihar, Anand Vihar are some other places that the terrorists could target.

New Delhi District Deputy Commissioner of Police Eish Singhal told IANS with regards to the terror threat, “We do not have any intelligence input of any kind of threat, but we have enhanced security in the city ahead of Diwali.”

Security has also been tightened at police stations after Delhi Police was tipped off by central intelligence agencies that Delhi police stations and police colonies may be targeted via suicide or direct attacks by terrorists. According to these inputs, terrorists may use explosive-laden vehicles or enter the police stations on foot.

Bangladesh establishment has firmed up its decision of relocating Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh from Cox Bazaar to a remote, uninhabited island situated 21 nautical miles away from the shore. Dhaka plans to move next month about 100,000 Rohingya refugees to Bhasan Char from its overcrowded Cox Bazaar refugee camps where more than 1 million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar are currently camped.

According to the Relief and Repatriation Commission chief Mahbub Alam Talukder based in Cox Bazaar, the government plans to shift the refugees in phases from early November. As per the report, the first relocation was to take place in April this year. However, that could not take place reportedly due to concerns raised by many human rights groups who claimed that the island is remote and prone to devastating cyclones and floods. When the idea of moving Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh to the remote island was first floated, many Rohingyas had said that they would rather prefer dying in the congested Cox bazaar camps.

Bhashan Char, which literally means ‘floating island’ emerged as an island about 20 years ago from a slit. The area was declared a forest reserve in 2013 and it regularly gets flooded between the monsoon months of June to September. The island’s area is around 10,000 acres at high tide and 15,000 acres at low tide.

It is located 21 nautical miles from Noakhali, 11 nautical miles from Jahajir Char, 4.2 nautical miles from Sandwip, 28 nautical miles from Patenga, and 13.2 nautical miles from Hatia and the only mode of commute for residents of Bhasan Char, should the Rohingyas decide to relocate to that island, will be vessels that take three to three-and-a-half hours to travel from Hatia.

The Uttar Pradesh police have detained seven fake polling agents from different booths in Rampur. These fake agents are believed to be working on behalf of the controversial Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan’s wife Tazeen Fatma.

According to the reports, the fake polling agents, who allegedly worked on behalf of Tazeem Fatma, were let off after an interrogation. The SP has fielded Azam Khan’s wife Tazeen Fatma as the candidate for the Rampur by-polls.

The by-election to the Rampur Assembly seat has become a prestige battle for Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Azam Khan and his party. Azam Khan, who resigned from the seat to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Rampur, has now fielded his wife for the by-polls of the assembly seat. Azam Khan’s wife Tazeen Fatma is currently Samajwadi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP.

Rampur is considered to be a fortress for controversial SP leader Azam Khan, who had won nine-terms from this seat and he is putting is all resources to retain the seat within the family.

Azam Khan, who is an accused in several cases has not been arrested by the district administration considering he may get sympathy votes in the by-elections. The importance of the seat can be gauged from the fact that SP President Akhilesh Yadav campaigned only on this seat in the by-elections.

Several cases of land grabbing have been booked against Rampur MP Azam Khan. The Rampur Police in Uttar Pradesh had also booked him on allegations of ‘stealing goats’ following the complaint which was filed on October 2016.

It was first land-grabbing, then lion statues, followed by books and valuable manuscripts. He has also been booked for ‘stealing buffaloes’. Recently, the Rampur MP was also booked for electricity theft. The power supply to Azam Khan’s resort ‘Humsafar’ in Uttar Pradesh was cut after raids were conducted in the resort by the Uttar Pradesh electricity department.

For the Rampur by-polls, the BJP has fielded Bharat Bhushan Gupta as its candidate and is banking on the polarisation of votes against Azam Khan.

Stone-pelting incidents and clashes were reported from the Muslim-dominated area of Nuh in Mewat region of Haryana during the polling. As per news agency IANS, incidents of scuffle and stone-pelting were reported from Nuh at around 8:45 AM on Monday, October 21.

The Muslim-majority Nuh in Haryana has three assembly constituencies, Nuh, Ferozpur Jhirka and Punhana. Mewat region, cuts across state boundaries and consists of Rajasthan and Haryana, is a hotbed of organised crime, cattle smuggling, illegal Rohingyas as well as mob violence against the Police.

Haryana, along with Maharashtra, has gone to polls today. The results of the state assemblies in these two states will be declared on 24th October. BJP leader Zakir Hussain is contesting against Congress’ Aftab Ahmed in Nuh which is believed to be a close contest. According to sources, the supporters of both candidates got into a fight where along with lathis and stone-pelting, people also claimed there was firing. Dozens were injured in the incident.

SP Sangeeta Kalia confirmed the few incidents of violence in Nuh and police security has been increased. The police force is vigilant to ensure peaceful voting.

Stalling developmental projects is the worst form of obstruction of justice for the poor: Piyush Goyal on NGO lobbies

Union Railways and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday stated that a mass movement was needed against NGOs, who are stopping development work in the country. He urged non-governmental organisations not to impede development, calling it the “worst form of obstructing justice” for the poor.

On Saturday, Piyush Goyal, speaking at the ‘Vibrant Goa’ investment summit held near Panaji, stated that he was willing to go on a public platform with folded hands to plead to the NGOs not to impede development projects with litigations and delays. He was referring to the delays in the greenfield airport at the Mopa Plateau in North Goa which has been held up due to litigations.

The Mopa airport was expected to be commissioned by the year 2020. But due to litigations and subsequent court orders, it has been delayed by more than a year. In July this year, CM Pramod Sawant had informed the Goa assembly that the physical progress achieved in the airport project was only 14.28%.

The Supreme Court had ordered a stay on the work on site after some NGOs had complained that trees are being cut. In March this year, the SC had cancelled the environmental clearance granted to the Mopa airport project and had stalled work on site.

“Frankly, I heard that the airport is under some litigation and it’s gone to the court. I don’t mind on the public platform to fold my hands and appeal to those NGOs and those few people who are coming in the path of development, who are not helping Goa grow, who are not helping the cause of the people of Goa by this form of litigation,” Goyal said.

Goyal said such projects will make Goa a world-class state with a quality of life comparable to the best in the world. The airport project is being undertaken by the GMR Group in association with the Government of Goa.

“I think it’s high time that there’s a mass movement of the people of India and the people of Goa against these forces, who are not allowing development to happen in Goa, who are not allowing good roads, who are not allowing good hotels, who are not allowing good airports, who are not allowing the expansion of the port,” Goyal said.

The construction of the Mopa greenfield airport is expected to boost the promotion of the coastal state as a world-class destination for tourism. The Mopa airport, the first phase of which was to be completed in 2020, has got delayed after the Supreme Court suspended the environment clearance provided to the project.

He also urged the people of Goa to promote music festivals on the lines of the iconic Woodstock festival to attract more tourists to the coastal state.

“We are right on the cusp of the tourist season, the flight was completely full, so I can see the rush of tourists coming here and I’m sure this year is going to be a phenomenally good year for tourists,” Goyal said.

In a last-ditch effort to influence the decision in favour of Babri Masjid in the Ram Janmabhoomi, Ayodhya case, the Muslim parties had submitted a ‘Statement of moulding the relief’ to the Supreme Court. The statement urged the Supreme Court to ‘consider how the future generations will view this judgement’ and asked them to uphold multiculturism in their submission.

However, this ‘Statement of moulding the relief’ was meant to be submitted to the Supreme Court in a sealed cover. As soon as it was submitted, the media widely had a copy of it. The contents of the statement were reported widely by every media house.

Mentioning the matter, the Muslim parties said that they had earlier submitted their note in a sealed cover to the Supreme Court but have now served it in open to all parties.


Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, however, was not pleased with the submissions of the Muslim parties.

When the matter was mentioned, CJI Ranjan Gogoi said “It is on my table…in a sealer cover. And it is on the Indian Express front page. Let it be there only”, expressing displeasure at the fact that the submission made to the Supreme Court in a sealed cover was already leaked to the media.

The Muslim parties said in court that they will be filing a reply on the objections raised by the Hindu side in a sealed envelope to the Supreme Court.


The Supreme Court had given three days to all parties to submit their statements on the moulding of relief to the SC in sealed covers.

The Nirmohi Akhada in its submission outlined 6 possible outcomes of the verdict and gave its opinions on all three. It has said that it is the lead claimant in building the temple since it has the Shebait rights since the 18th century. A shebait under Hindu law is entrusted with the task of maintaining and preserving an idol and its property.

One of the original parties to the suit, Gopal Singh Visharad who is now survived by son Rajendra Singh have submitted that the building of Ram Janmabhoomi is non-negotiable. They have also submitted that a place of worship is not essential to perform Namaz. Further, they have submitted that “only” the “Mutawalli (the trustee of a wakf)” can come forward to stake claim on behalf of the mosque. Since Mutawalli has not staked a claim, the claims of the Sunni Central Waqf Board and other Muslims plaintiffs are not legitimate.

The representatives of Lord Ram have claimed the entire 67.703 acres and not just the 2.77 acres saying that the entire space would be necessary for the devotees when a Ram Temple is built.

The centuries-old Ram Janmabhoomi conflict seems to draw to a close. The Ram Janmabhoomi verdict is expected to be pronounced any day between 14th and 16th November 2019.

Uttar Pradesh Police has announced Rs 2.5 lakh reward to anyone who give information on the two suspected killers of ex-Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tiwari, Ashfaq and Moinuddin.


The police has intensified raids across ‘musafirkhanas’ and madarsas in Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh in a bid to arrest the culprits.

The duo have been identified using CCTV footage from camera outside Tiwari’s office in Lucknow as well as the hotel they checked in to. They have been absconding since. The UP Police is looking for them in UP as well as neighbouring states.

According to sources, the suspects had reached Lucknow by road after deboarding the train at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. CCTV footage has been obtained from Kanpur Railway station. Following the murder, the assassins reached Hardoi, Pilibhit and Bareli. One of the suspects is also believed to be injured and he got treatment in Bareli at a known person’s place. Moinuddin was reportedly hurt while committing the murder and in the CCTV footage obtained from the hotel, he could be seen with his hand in his pocket trying to hide his injury.

It is believed that one of the accused, Ashfaq, had befriended Tiwari by posing as Rohit Solanki to gain his trust. Before the murder, Ashfaq had a conversation with Kamlesh Tiwari on the phone when he stated his wish to join the organisation. The meeting between Kamlesh Tiwari and Ashfaq was fixed after the conversation.

Tiwari, a former Hindu Mahasabha leader, was assassinated at his Lucknow office by one Ashfaq and one Moinuddin who are still absconding and on the run. The Uttar Pradesh police and Gujarat ATS sprung into action to blow the lid off a Surat-based Jihadi group that was indoctrinated by one of the accused who planned the murder, Maulana Mohsin Sheikh. Two other conspirators, Rashid Pathan and Faizan have been arrested. The Gujarat ATS has declared the names of the murderers as Moinuddin and Ashfaq who are still absconding. Director General Police of UP has announced a reward of Rs 2.50 lakhs each (total Rs 5 lakhs) for the apprehending of the two murder accused.

2 specially abled women allege mistreatment by CISF staff at Kolkata Airport and GoAir officials respectively

Two specially-abled women, Jeeja Ghosh Nag and Kuhu Das have alleged gross mistreatment by Kolkata Airport staff and GoAir while they were travelling to Delhi for a conference to discuss the rights of disabled women.

Jeeja Ghosh Nag

Jeeja Ghosh is an accomplished professional and social worker. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Jeeja has made it her life’s mission to fight for the rights of specially-abled people and believes in the ‘rights approach’. 2006 she completed her second masters in Disability Studies from Leeds University, UK and has presented several papers in national and international forums.

A documentary film named I’m Jeeja has been made based on her life produced by PSBT & Doordarshan of India. The film “I’m Jeeja” won the National Film Award 2016 from the Government of India as the best film for social issues in the non-feature film category.

Even with all these accomplishments, Jeeja has faced mistreatment. Jeeja has said that the GoAir staff mistreated her at Kolkata Airport while she was travelling to Delhi to attend Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

Jeeja has said that the staff of GoAir did not give her a wheelchair and had no one to push the wheelchair for her. Then, they questioned her as to why she did not have an escort travelling with her.

“On reaching the counter, I requested for a wheelchair to go for security check and then proceed for boarding, Ghosh said. “But the GoAir representative would not let me in. She asked me to wait, but did not provide any explanation.”

“I realised the airline did not have a wheelchair ready and also did not have anyone to push the wheelchair. I was made to stand for at least 15 minutes,” Ghosh said.

The other people who were travelling with her went ahead, while she was made to wait.

Ratnaboli Ray who was travelling with Jeeja said she received a call from SpiceJet who in turn accused her of abandoning Jeeja. “The caller (a lady) accused me of abandoning her and insisted I go and escort her in. I told her it was their job to provide a wheelchair. Later another person called up and said Jeeja was agitated, we went back to the check-in counter although we had already proceeded for boarding,” Ray said.

GoAir has now reportedly issued an apology:

“GoAir sincerely apologises for the unfortunate incident that took place during the check-in process of a passenger with a disability on GoAir flight G8102 from Calcutta to Delhi. The disabled passenger did not pre-book a wheelchair but asked for one at the check-in counter. The duty staff upon realising all three wheelchairs allocated for the said flight were occupied, informed the passenger that she will try to source a wheelchair. It took a few minutes to arrange a wheelchair. GoAir apologises for the delay in sourcing the wheelchair,” the statement said. “Wheelchair was sourced and provided for and the passenger was escorted all the way to the aircraft door by the GoAir staff. The duty staff have personally apologised to the passenger and expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to the passenger.”

Kuhu Das is Founder and Director, Association for Women with Disabilities, and an activist for women’s rights. She is a woman with locomotor disability. Das has also alleged mistreatment by the Kolkata Airport Staff.

Kuhu Das has said that she was asked by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) staff to take off her jeans as she wears calliper on her leg.

Das, who was also travelling to attend the conference on the rights of women with disability alleged that CISF personnel, a woman, insisted that she would have to take off her pants as she had never seen such callipers.

Other passengers raised an alarm and protested the manner in which CISF staff was treating her. Eventually, higher officials stepped in and the matter was resolved.

Das has also said that she was shocked that the Airport staff was so insensitive.

According to a report in DNA, Das said, “Were they not been trained and sensitized?” she asked. She added that as the experience shows, people with disability suffer despite so much fight for rights.

In 2016, SpiceJet, another budget airline was asked to pay Jeeja Ghosh Nag Rs. 10 lakh in compensation after in 2012, she was removed from the flight at the insistence of the pilot because she suffered from cerebral palsy.
