Taking political dynastic succession forward, BSP chief Mayawati gives two important party positions to brother and nephew

BSP supremo Mayawati has appointed two of her relatives in key posts in the party. Today she gave away the two most important party positions of the national vice-president and national coordinator to her brother, Anand Kumar and nephew, Akash Anand respectively.

Along with her 24-year-old nephew Akash Anand, former party VP Ramji Gautam was also chosen as BSP’s national coordinator. Moreover, the JD(s) turncoat, Danish Ali was elected as leader of Bahujan Samaj Party in Lok Sabha.

Akash made his first public appearance in 2016 when he accompanied Mayawati to Saharanpur. The 24-year-old nephew also shared the stage with her during a rally in Meerut in February 2017. According to sources, Akash’s induction to the party was a part of Mayawati’s bigger strategy of attracting young voters towards the BSP.

Mayawati’s nephew’s elevation is being considered crucial as it is speculated that he would eventually be the front-runner to take over the party reigns after the BSP chief. In January 2019, unfazed by the criticism Mayawati had inducted her nephew Akash Anand, an undergraduate from a university in London, into the party.

In April 2019, during the last day of campaigning for the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls, Akash had replaced the BSP chief in an election rally. Mayawati didn’t attend the Agra rally due to a ban by EC and instead, she had sent him as her representative to the rally with her message. She asked her followers to give her nephew due to honour as they would have given her.

Basically, being a shrewd politician that she is, she used the EC ban as a blessing in disguise, for formally launching her nephew Akash Anand into politics.

In India, dynastic succession in political parties is the key to keep the fibres of patronage intact, Congress party being the utmost examples of this approach.

In a similar development, taking the tradition forward, Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan Reddy had appointed his uncle Y V Subba Reddy as the Chairman of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam Trust Board.

Moreover, a similar strategy was also followed by West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee who had appointed her nephew Abhishek Banerjee as the head of her party’s youth wing in 2012.

Tausif Imran Khan repeatedly raped class X girl in Vadodara, took her to religious places to brainwash and convert her

In Vadodara, a Muslim man repeatedly rapes a 14-year-old class X girl and recorded her on his mobile phone, reports Times of India. Allegedly the man had also attempted to brainwash her to convert to Islam by taking her to various religious places.

19-year-old Tausif Imran Khan, a class XII student who lived in Manjalpur, has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for sexually exploiting a minor. Police say that he used to take the girl to Lalbaug garden and also near the ONGC campus on Pratapnag to sexually harass her. Her parents have claimed that Khan used to force her to commit sexual acts while being recorded.

The police investigation has revealed that Khan used to share pictures and videos of the girl on Tik Tok. He didn’t share any obscene content of the girl. However, he threatened to use them when the girl’s parents confronted him.

The parents discovered the girl’s exploitation when on June 20th they decided to follow her. They found out that Khan took her to Lalbaug garden and then to Hazira tomb on Pratapnagar Road. They complained that the girl was taken to various religious places in an attempt to brainwash her to convert to Islam. On being promised of marriage the girl had also started to fast for Ramzan.

According to the police, Khan had met the girl at an examination centre for the Gujarat board exams. He made repeatedly following the girl, contacting her and promised her of marriage. He had also been previously booked under POSCO for molesting a minor in 2017. He has been picked up from home but yet to be formally arrested.

There have been several incidents of the rape of minors in the past few months. In Kanpur, a Maulvi had raped a minor in a Madarasa. In another shocking case, 2 Muslim men have been arrested for raping a 12-year-old girl. In another rape of a minor in a Madarasa, the victim’s family are traumatized after Islamist trolls demanded to marry her off to her rapist.

Another case against rape accused BSP MLA, this time for proving false information in his 2019 Lok Sabha election affidavit

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA from Ghosi constituency in Uttar Pradesh, Atul Rai who recently surrendered in court for a rape case he is accused in might be fresh trouble with a case being registered against him for providing false information in his 2019 Lok Sabha election affidavit.

The FIR was registered by Assistant District Election Officer Shabbir Ahmad after it was found that he had mentioned 13 cases against him in his election affidavit but had a total of 24 cases against him.

The FIR was lodged under different sections of IPC including 177 (furnishing false information), 420 (forgery) besides others.

BJP candidate Harinarain Rajbhar had made the complaint in this regard with the administration.

Atul Rai is also a rape accused who recently surrendered to the court. At the commencement of the first sitting of the 17th Lok Sabha, there was uncertainty whether Rai would turn up for the oath but he didn’t, possibly fearing arrest by the police in the rape case. Rai had absconded since his name first emerged in the kidnapping and rape case. He had not surrendered even when his anticipatory bail pleas were rejected by the courts. The Varanasi court has sentenced him to 14-days judicial custody after he surrendered.

Dainik Bhaskar publishes exaggerated amounts as extra cost to air travellers due to closure of Pakistani airspace

Today the Hindi newspaper Dainik Bhaskar published an article regarding increased cost the airlines are having to bear due to the continued closure of international airspace over Pakistan. In the headline, the article says that daily 70000 travellers are paying upto 5 times more airfare due to this. Although it is correct that Airlines are having to spend more due to the longer route they are having to take bypassing Pakistan, the numbers mentioned in the report are highly exaggerated and defy logic.

The report by Dainik Bhaskar mentions that daily around 233 flights to and from India are affected due to the closure of Pakistani airspace, which carries around 70 thousand passengers. According to the report, passengers travelling to Europe and the US are paying 4 to 5 times more in ticket price due to this. But this is clearly an exaggeration, as airfare has not gone up by that much. A simple search on online ticketing portals show that the cost of flight tickets to European and American destinations remain the same as usual price, they have not gone up by any significant amount.

Moreover, the flight time has gone up by 1-2 hours for most airlines due to avoiding Pakistani airspace, which would be around 20% increase for a 10-hour flight. So, there is no reason why the ticket price will go up by 5 times for that increase.

The article also mentions that Air India is spending Rs 6 crore extra for its flights to Europe and the US due to the change in route. The flight time has increased, and the non-stop flights to New York are having to halt for refuelling. This has added extra fuel and airport ground handling charges for the already loss-making airlines. But an earlier article in Business Standard has mentioned that Air India was losing Rs 3 crore daily due to this reason. So, this means the amount has doubled to Rs 6 crore in the Dainik Bhaskar report.

The report also used this Air India’s increased amount to calculate the total additional cost of all 233 flights. But that is incorrect as not all flights are having to stop for refuelling due to the route change. Only the non-stop flights to the US are having to do that. For flights to Europe, the Middle East and central Asia, only flight time has increased by around 1-2 hours. Hence the amount of additional cost will be less for such flights as planes burn less fuel while cruising at 30,000 feet, compared to fuel used for extra landing and taking off for refuelling, and there are no extra ground handling charges for such flights.

Moreover, flights connecting Delhi are most impacted by the changed route. Flights connecting Mumbai and other airports in Southern India anyway fly over the Arabian sea for travelling to Europe and the US, therefore the impact of the closure of Pakistani airspace is limited to only a few fights. Therefore, it is wrong to claim that the entire daily 70 thousand passengers are paying 5 times extra due to the closure of airspace over Pakistan, as claimed by the article.

Pakistan had completely closed its airspace and grounded its airlines after the airstrike on a terror camp in Balakot by Indian Air Force in February this year. Later the airspace was opened up for domestic airlines and international flights connecting Pakistan. But flying over the country by international flights remains banned by the country. This has forced all planes that earlier flew over Pakistan to now go southward and fly over Arabian Sea. Recently it was reported that Pakistan will re-open the airspace only if India promises to not conduct Balakot like strikes in future.

Mirchi baba files a complaint after he receives 3000 calls about his promise to do ‘Jal Samadhi’ if Digvijaya Singh loses

A self-proclaimed godman Swami Vairagyanand Giri, otherwise known as Mirchi Baba, who had promised to take Jal Samadhi if Bhopal Congress Digvijaya Singh lost, has now lodged a complaint with police after receiving more than 3000 calls on his mobile regarding ‘Jal Samadhi’.

Reportedly, controversial Mirchi baba had performed a Yagna by burning 5 quintals of red chilly ahead of the Lok Sabha elections to help senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh win from Bhopal. During this Yagna, he had vowed to take ‘Jal Samadhi’ if Singh loses. Congress leader Digvijaya Singh lost the Bhopal Lok Sabha elections to BJP candidate Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur.

After Digvijaya Singh’s defeat to Sadhvi Pragya, a social media campaign was launched to search for the godman. Later on 25 May a symbolic Jal Samadhi was also performed by the BJP supporters. Around the same time, the godman was quoted as calling his statement a political gimmick.

Subsequently, he decided to change track and requested to perform Jal Samadhi at 2.11 PM on 16 June which is reportedly the auspicious time of Anuradha Nakshatra, Chaturdashi. However, the district administration denied any such permission.

The controversial baba has now lodged a complaint with police after receiving such many messages as his ‘Jal Samadhi’ promise turned out to be just a political gimmick. Based on his complaint, a case under section 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against Narendra Giri and others at Ayodhya Nagar police station.

Investigation officer in the case, sub-inspector Yashwant Singh Parihar said, “A case has been registered against Narendra Giri and others and we have started an investigation. The call details are being looked into, and further course of action will be decided after the investigation”.

“In more than 100 pages we have submitted the details of around 3000 mobile phone numbers from which calls and threats were received. We have informed the police that Narendra Giri and people close to him had made these calls and threatened Swami Vairagyanand Giri,” said Syed Majid Ali, the advocate of the Swami Vairagyanand Giri.

Sidhu’s rant comes back to haunt: Posters in Ludhiana ask him to keep his promise of quitting politics if Rahul Gandhi loses Amethi

Posters asking Congress leader, Navjot Singh Sidhu, to keep up his promise of quitting politics if Rahul Gandhi loses from Amethi, comes up in Pakhowal road in Ludhiana, Saturday.

In April, Sidhu, while addressing a rally in Rae Bareli, had challenged that he would quit politics if the Gandhi scion loses election from his stronghold. Now his rhetoric has come back to haunt him as posters with a picture of Sidhu captioned read: When are you quitting politics? Time to keep your words. We are waiting for your resignation,” appeared in Ludhiana.

However, it still remains unclear who put up these posters on a roadside wall. This is not the first instance where people have been asking Navjot Singh Sindhu to quit politics and keep his promise. A day before, similar posters had appeared in Mohali.

In one of the biggest overturns in this Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi had lost from his home turf to BJP’ Smriti Irani by 55,120 votes.

However, Sidhu had then refused to believe that BJP’ Smriti Irani, who was standing opposite Rahul Gandhi from Amethi, is a tough competition for the Congress President. He refuted the BJP’ claim that no development work has taken place in the country in the last 70 years. He said that the country made everything from a needle to an aircraft during this period.

Navjot Singh Sidhu is currently serving as the Minister of local government, tourism, cultural affairs, and museums of the state of Punjab.

Recently, CM Amarinder Singh had stripped off the cricketer turned politician of the portfolios of local government, tourism, cultural affairs, and museums of the state of Punjab and offered him power and new and renewable energy sources ministry. However, even after two weeks of portfolio shuffling, Punjab power department still remains headless as Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had demanded the state Congress president’s post along with it, is yet to take charge of the power ministry.

World Cup Match Preview, Pakistan v South Africa: Do or Die for both the teams

A do or die situation for both the teams to keep the hopes alive for semi-final birth. One of them will surely be ruled out of the tournament after losing the match here.

Nobody knows how good or bad these two teams will play against each other, however, for a neutral fan, this will be fun to watch them play in such a scenario where a win is a must.

South Africa has shown its true colour against New Zealand when they couldn’t defend a total of 241 despite dismissing their top 4 at the score of 8. They dropped catches, missed run outs and panicked in the final few overs like they are the champions of it. The choke word has already arrived for them in the tournament, and it would be difficult for them now to remove the tag easily.

Pakistan after losing to India is desperate to take the field and prove a point to their fans. The team and captain are under tremendous pressure as they have been criticized heavily for their poor performance in this World Cup. They have won just one game and lost 3 with one washout against Sri Lanka.

A sunny and dry day is expected at Lord’s which is hosting its first World Cup match of the current edition.

Players to watch out for

Imran Tahir would be the key bowler for South Africa in the middle overs. He bowled beautifully against Afghanistan and New Zealand, and it was difficult for the batsmen to score off him in those two games. It will be interesting to see how he bowls against the country of his birth, where he learned the art of spin bowling.

Mohammad Amir, the highest wicket-taker for Pakistan in the competition, is ready to take on the South African batting line up which looked fragile in the tournament so far. If he takes early wickets, then it would be easy for Pakistan to build the pressure from the begging of the South African innings.

As the accused in Bargari sacrilege case gets killed in jail, here is all you need to know about the 2015 Guru Granth Sahib desecration

Dera Sacha Sauda follower, Mohinder Pal Singh Bittoo, the main accused in the 2015 Bargari sacrilege case was murdered on Saturday evening by two of his inmates in the Nabha Jail in Patiala, where he was lodged.

The incident took place around 5:45 pm when Mohinder Singh was allegedly attacked by two men, Gursewak Singh and Maninder Singh with rods that they pulled out from a window, the police said. Bittu was taken to the hospital but he was declared brought dead. The police said that a medical board has been set up to probe the death and the report of the post-mortem examination will be disclosed shortly.

Mohinder Pal Bittu, 49, was accused of desecrating the Sikh holy book in 2015 in Faridkot district’s Bargari and was arrested on June 9, 2018, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, carrying an illegal weapon and his alleged involvement in unlawful activities, by an SIT of Punjab Police probing the four-year-old sacrilege incidents. For the past 10 months, he was lodged in the high-security Nabha jail.

The state committee member of the Dera from Palampur in Himachal, Bittu was a resident of Kotkapura town of Faridkot and owner of a bakery shop. Mohinder Singh was the member of a 45-member community of the Dera Sache Sauda and also one of the 150 Dera followers who were booked by the Panchkula Police for violence after the conviction of the Dera head, Gurmeet Ram Rahim. He was absconding since August 2017 following the conviction of Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim, the DSS head was convicted of rape by special CBI court on August 20, 2017. His conviction led to widespread violence leaving several dead and injured. On August 28, 2017, Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years in prison. In January 2019, he was convicted of the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati and awarded a sentence of life imprisonment. He is under prosecution for other murders and for ordering forced castrations.

Meanwhile, fearing a communal flare, Punjab CM, Amarinder Singh requested all communities to maintain peace and “not give in to rumours”. He has also ordered beefing up of security in the state in the wake of the attack on Mohinder Pal Singh Bittoo. Ten companies of the Border Security Force (BSF) and two companies of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been called in, sources said.

Captain Amarinder Singh has ordered a probe into the attack of Mohinder Singh, warning of strict punishment for the assailants, an official statement said. The government has suspended the jail superintendent and the barrack-in-charge.

According to reports, ADGP Prisons Rohit Chaudhary will head the committee formed to probe the attack. He has been asked to submit a report into the case within three days.

The 2015 Guru Granth Sahib desecration or the 2015 Guru Granth Sahib sacrilege refers to a series of desecration incidents of the Sikh Guru Granth Sahib and the subsequent protests that took place in Punjab in October 2015.

The first incident of desecration was reported from Bargari, Faridkot district, where 110 torn ‘Angs’ of the holy Guru was found on October 12, 2015. It all began on the afternoon of June 5, 2015, when the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book, was stolen from a gurdwara in a village called Burj Jawahar Singh Wala in Faridkot district, Punjab.

Several Sikh leaders, including Baljit Singh Daduwal, gave an ultimatum to the police to find the culprits. On June 11, members of various Sikh religious organisation held a protest in the village accusing the police of inaction. They tried to gherao (surround) the local police station, meanwhile, a large police unit was deployed to prevent it.

On October 12 more than 110 pages of the Guru Granth Sahib were found lying on the ground in front of a gurdwara in Bargari, Faridkot district. The residents of the town and nearby villages declared a bandh. The members of some Sikh religious organisation arrived in the town and in the evening a protest march carrying the torn pages was held.

In nearby Kotkapura, protestors blocked a major highway intersection. Large numbers of police personnel were deployed to prevent violence. The protestors refused to unblock the highways, despite requests from the local police chiefs, demanding that the perpetrators be arrested.

Following this incident, several other incidents were reported where ‘Angs’ or ‘bir’ of the Sikh Holy book was found torn or burnt.

On 14 October 2015, around 6000 protesters gathered in Kotkapura and held a peaceful sit-in protest to demand action. In the wee hours of the morning, the police started using water cannons and lathi charge to scatter the crowd. They fired some rounds at the mob. Two protesters died in the firing. More than 50 people were injured in clashes, which included 24 policemen. The protesters also destroyed 10 vehicles of which 5 belonged to the police. Two leaders of the group were arrested and 500 protesters were detained.

On October 15, 2015, the Punjab government announced the formation of a Judicial Commission headed by retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge, Zora Singh to investigate the first incident of desecration. Following the investigation, several arrests were made.

On October 18, Amarinder Singh demanded the resignation of the then Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal and imposition of President’s rule in Punjab. Several leaders of the then ruling party in Punjab, the  Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) submitted their resignation in protest, accusing the government of failing to protect the holy books.

The Sikh diaspora around the world, including the Canadian Sikhs, the Sikhs in London, American Sikh Council (ASC), North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) and Indian National Overseas Congress (INOC), condemned the desecration and killing of the protesters. They urged the central and state governments to bring the culprits to justice.

On November 2015, the Punjab Cabinet approved an amendment to the Section 295A of the IPC, The new section 295AA carried a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for crimes like Bargari sacrilege case. The bill was passed on March 22, 2016.

A special investigation team (SIT) of Punjab Police, probing the sacrilege incidents at Burj Jawahar Singh Wala and Bargari villages of Faridkot, had last year rounded up four Dera Sacha Sauda followers, suspecting them to be the prime accused in the sacrilege incidents.

Along with Mohinder Singh Bittu, three others namely Sunny Kanda, a dairy owner, his brother Sukhpreet Singh and Jaggi, their relative from Mansa were also rounded up by the Punjab Police.

In June 2016, after an unidentified man had opened fire at Gurdev Singh, a Dera follower, at his grocery shop at Burj Jawahar Singh Wala village of Faridkot there was a massive protest by the Dera followers. Bittu had reportedly led that agitation, demanding the arrest of culprits.

Last year, Bollywood actor, Akshay Kumar was also quizzed by the SIT of Punjab Police, which is probing the 2015 police firing incidents at Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura in the state following cases of sacrilege in Faridkot.

The actor was reportedly questioned over a reported meeting between Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and former deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal at the actor’s flat in Mumbai in 2015 in connection with the release of the Dera head’s movie “MSG”. His name was reportedly mentioned in the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission report on sacrilege incidents.

Kumar has denied arranging any meeting between former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and the Dera Sacha Sauda sect head. The actor had, in fact, also denied having ever met the Sirsa headquartered Dera head.

Kumar had issued the denial on November 12, 2018, after the SIT summoned him along with former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal. “It has come to my knowledge that some rumours and false statements are being loosely made on social media about my involvement with a person named Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in the context of a fictitious meeting involving Sukhbir Singh Badal, Kumar had said in a tweet.

“With all humility, I would like to state the following facts. I have never ever met Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in my life, anywhere. I learnt from social media at some point that Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh resided for a while at some place in my locality Juhu in Mumbai but we never crossed each other’s paths, Kumar had said.

Activist files complaint against Rahul Gandhi for his International Yoga Day tweet where he insulted the Indian Army

In what could signal fresh trouble for Congress president Rahul Gandhi, a Mumbai-based activist has filed a complaint against him for his tweet on International Day of Yoga where he ended up insulting the Indian Army’s canine unit.

Complaint filed against Congress president Rahul Gandhi

The complaint has been filed by one Atal Bihari Dubey who is practising as an advocate in Bombay High Court and other courts in Mumbai. The complaint says that Rahul Gandhi has indulged in ‘public mischief with the intention to disrespect the Indian Army as well as International Yoga Day’.

The Tweet of Rahul Gandhi that Dubey has referred to in his complaint is one where Rahul Gandhi had tweeted two pictures of the Indian Army’s canine unit doing yoga along with their instructors. The tweet was captioned by Rahul Gandhi as ‘New India’.

The tweet led to massive uproar and several people, commentators and the general public believed that the Congress president had insulted the canine unit of the Indian Army.

Dubey has urged the police to file an FIR against Rahul Gandhi in the matter.

Bill to make Jallianwala Bagh trust apolitical tabled by Modi govt, proposes to end automatic nomination of Congress President

A bill to make the Jallianwala Bagh trust apolitical has been tabled by the Modi government in its first parliamentary session since 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The bill proposes to end the automatic nomination of the Congress President and gives more power to the Central government to terminate the term of a nominated trustee.

The Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Act, 1951 provides for the erection a National Memorial in memory of the victims of the 13 April 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The Act provides for a Trust to maintain the National Memorial. The trustees of the Jallianwala Bagh are as shown below.

The President of the Indian National Congress is one of the trustees, making it favourable to one party. Also, in the absence of a Leader of Opposition, there would be no trustee from the Lok Sabha.

In December 2018, the Centre approved an amendment to the Act to resolve these issues. Consequently, in February the Lok Sabha passed The Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial (Amendment) Bill, 2018 which proposes to remove the President of the Indian National Congress as a trustee. It further clarifies that in the absence of a Leader of Opposition the leader of the single largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha would be the trustee.

The bill has also an added clause that allows the central government to terminate the term of a nominated trustee before the expiry of his term without assigning any reason.

Despite the efforts of the Central government, the bill wasn’t passed in the Rajya Sabha in February due to the strong opposition of the Congress party. After coming back to power, the Modi government plans to once again bring up the bill for discussion.

The Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was one of the 40 bills proposed by the Modi government in its first parliamentary session of the 17th Lok Sabha.
