‘Sanatan is nothing,’ says Congress leader Udit Raj, joins I.N.D.I. Alliance leaders in making anti-Sanatan remark

On 3rd October (Tuesday), Congress leader Udit Raj joined other I.N.D.I. alliance leaders in making anti-Sanatan (also known as Hindu Dharma) remarks. While speaking to ANI, he claimed that Sanatan Dharma is nothing. He alleged that people have been fooled in the name of Sanatan but it would not continue any longer.

According to Udit Raj, if there is anything that is Sanatan it is the caste system (Jati). Speaking against Sanatan Dharma, the I.N.D.I. Alliance leader, Udit Raj ranted, “Sanatan is nothing. If there is Sanatan, there is caste…They have been fooling us and trying to get our votes on the name of Sanatan. Now, they won’t be able to do it any longer.”

The Congress leader inquired if everyone was Sanatani, why some castes got reservations and quotas. Trivialising Sanatan Dharma, he equated it with the caste system and claimed that Sanatan is the same as caste.

Udit Raj added, “If everyone is ‘Sanatani’, why do only some castes get reservations and preferences in jobs? Why is there inequality among people? Sanatan and caste are one thing.”

He made this remark while responding to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s comment given a day earlier. Notably, on 2nd of October (Monday), UP CM Adityanath addressed the concluding session of ‘Shrimad Bhagwat Katha Gyan Yagya’ which was held at the Gorakhnath temple.

Speaking at the event, UP CM said, “Sanatan Dharma is the religion of humanity, and any attack on it will put entire humanity in danger.” Asserting that Sanatan Dharma is the only religion, he added that the rest of the religions are all “sects or methods of worship”.

Earlier on 13th September, Yogi Adityanath stated that Sanatan Dharma is the national religion of the country. He expressed regret that certain Indian citizens continue to deride the Sanatan Dharma which has long been persecuted.

Prior to that, on 7th September, UP CM had lambasted leaders of the I.N.D.I. alliance for brazenly attacking Sanatan Dharma and giving hate speeches against the Hindu religion. In a scathing attack, the Chief Minister referred to those leaders of I.N.D.I. Alliance as “political parasites” and categorically stated that when Ravan could not destroy Sanatan Dharma with all his arrogance, how can “political parasites” do so?

These statements come in the wake of a spree of hate speeches by leaders of the I.N.D.I. Alliance who have brazenly derided Sanatan (Hindu) Dharma by equating it with diseases.

The attacks on Sanatan Dharma escalated after the speech given by the son of Tamil Nadu CM, Udhayanidhi Stalin. Speaking at “Eradicate Sanatan Conference”, the  DMK leader said, “Mosquitoes, dengue, flu, malaria, corona – we should not oppose these things. They’ve to be eradicated completely. The same is the case with Santanam (Hinduism). Our first work should be to abolish/eradicate Sanatanam instead of opposing it.”

Since then, many more DMK, Congress, VCK, SP and CPI(M) leaders have given deplorable anti-Sanatan remarks.

‘KCR wanted to join NDA but told him no for his deeds’: PM Modi hits out at Telangana CM in Nizamabad rally

0

In a scathing attack on the BRS in Telangana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that state Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) wanted to join NDA to seek BJP’s support after the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections but he refused the offer due to “deeds” of the ruling dispensation.

Addressing a rally here, PM Modi told the gathering that he is going to tell a secret he has not spoken so far.

“When BJP won 48 seats in the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election, KCR needed support. Before this election, he used to welcome me at the airport, but later suddenly he stopped doing so,”  the Prime Minister said.

“KCR came to meet me in Delhi…he started telling me that the country is progressing under your leadership, and said that he wanted to join NDA. He also asked me to extend support to him. I told him (KCR) that due to his deeds, Modi cannot associate with him,” he added.

The Prime Minister said the BJP cannot deceive the people of Telangana.  NDA is led by the BJP.

“I refused (him) entry to NDA,” PM Modi said.

He said that the 48 seats won by the BJP in the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections in December 2020 are the “start of the process to change the fate of Telangana”.

The Prime Minister said that K Chandrashekar Rao again approached him and told him that he was going to hand over all “karobar” to his son KT Rama Rao (KTR) and “sought my blessings”.

The Prime Minister said he told KCR that it is a democracy and his successor will be decided by the people of Telangana.

“Are you a king who will decide?” the Prime Minister asked.

Referring to KCR not coming to his functions, PM Modi said that the “corrupt” cannot sit in his company and “are running (away)”.

PM Modi said if BJP comes to power, it will “expose corruption” of the BRS government.

What a journalist on a Chinese payroll can and cannot do: Hear it all from a journalist who was once on Chinese salary for 4 years

The Delhi Police has raided the homes of at least eight journalists associated with NewsClick. The case is related to the acceptance of crores of rupees in funding from China to write and speak against India and spread Chinese propaganda. Since the matter is related to journalists, particularly the leftist media gang, it has been linked to “freedom of the press” online.

Renowned senior journalists like Rajdeep Sardesai even started questioning the police saying that police did not have any warrant or FIR for the raids conducted at the homes of journalists/writers and the confiscation of their mobiles and laptops. Linking everyday news like police raids with democracy, Rajdeep asked, “Since when did journalists become enemies of the state?”

A journalist of Rajdeep’s stature needs to merely make one or two phone calls to find out whether or not the police had warrants or FIRs to search the houses of journalists associated with NewsClick and confiscate their electronic gadgets etc. He didn’t do that. In order to create a buzz on social media, he gave incomplete information.

The only thing that can be said about the question “Since when did journalists become enemies of the state?”, one can answer it with the following

1.) How is propaganda done by taking money?

2.) How can propaganda be done by paying money?

3.) How can China spread its message, its politics, its diplomacy by paying salaries to the people of India in the name of a content company?

4.) If Indian people work in a Chinese company and take salary from there, will they start writing and speaking against their own country?

Whatever questions Rajdeep and journalists like him are raising, I have the answer for them.

I have worked for two different Chinese companies for about four years (from 2016 to last month of 2019). Both the companies were related to content. The work was related to news. All the employees who wrote and spoke at both places were from India. There was not a single Chinese person in the editorial team. The reason behind giving such details is because the next line is shocking. Of course, all of us in the editorial team were Indians, but the editorial policies came from Beijing. We all had to work according to an Excel sheet.

What was there in that Excel sheet?

Be it any topic related to content, news, media – instructions were written in detail. Be it porn, nudity or obscenity – all instructions came from Beijing only. Be it economy, foreign policy, corporate world – the editorial policy was decided by the team from Beijing.

Let us understand with a small example. After the initial hiring, our then-editor decided that topics like banking/corporate/insurance etc. would fall within the economy category. The Indian media largely follows this.

The Chinese team could not understand this, nor could it explain its arguments to us. After this, they called the entire team (Hindi-English) to Beijing at a huge expense, gave everyone a month’s training and explained that there would be a corporate parent category, which would look after the economy/banking/insurance etc.

After this entire episode, the Chinese management understood that if they wanted to run a content-related office in India, it would be difficult to manage it from Beijing. After this, two to four Chinese people started living permanently in our Gurgaon office. They would arrive on visa.

There came a point in time when Chinese faces were more visible in our office than Indian faces. Among these, one to two were always those who had done Hindi courses either from some university in China or from some institute in India. They did not prepare Hindi content because they did not have the required qualification but they were always in the office. Can’t say for certain but can speculate that maybe they were there to listen to our conversation!

The Chinese who lived in the office had a fast typing speed. They always kept chatting with the team in Beijing. From there, the instructions given in Chinese were translated into English and Hindi in Gurgaon and added to the Excel sheet. Even if it was broken English or Hindi, they would do this practice. The Indian team did not have the right to edit it.

What not to do – an Excel sheet for this too

The Excel sheet I talked about above was used to instruct how something had to be done, but that was not all. It is also important for the leftist journalists/writers, who compare “freedom of press” in communist countries like China with India and whine about it in India, to know that there was an Excel sheet which listed the subjects that were not to be written and spoken about. Not only this, as a news aggregator, it was also our job to hide the news coming from any channel/website related to these topics.

What were those topics which the Chinese management did not want to show the public?:

  1. Any anti-China news
  2. News related to Arunachal Pradesh
  3. Any news about Dalai Lama
  4. News related to Tibet
  5. Any news from Taiwan
  6. Hong Kong news
  7. News and photos of Tiananmen Square and the rebellion there
  8. No sexy photo/video of Chinese actresses

After all, at whom were the Chinese companies targeting a particular type of content as part of their propaganda? They were targeting the people of India. By taking news from the Indian media houses, these companies spread their work against India through their apps. All those working for these companies were Indians, including me. Don’t know about the others, but for me, salary was the only reason behind this.

Now let us go back to the news about NewsClick. Let us go back to that mindset which believes that – “Since when did journalists become enemies of the state?” The editorial policy that I discussed above, based on which I earned my salary for 4 years, were/are the editors of NewsClick working on similar lines or are they truly the harbingers of “freedom of the press”?

What kind of Tibet-related news being run in NewsClick and why is Kashmir in it?
Why only one news on Arunachal Pradesh in NewsClick?
Guage the nature of news related to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in NewsClick.

Community-verified icon

Why is there no news about or related to Dalai Lama on NewsClick?

I have selected just four news topics and posted their screenshots above. The number of news published on NewsClick on Tibet, Dalai Lama, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Arunachal Pradesh etc are all clear from just four screenshots. Zero news on Dalai Lama, only one news on Arunachal Pradesh, only four news on Tibet (including Kashmir, Sikkim, America included as part of editorial policy) and only five news on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) (including Hurriyat, photos of China, Indian Army, Kashmir etc).

What do these four screenshots show? They show that the editorial policies which were guided by Beijing from 2016 to 2020 (until the Chinese app was blocked) have continued in 2023 as well. This is clear from the news published on NewsClick.

Chinese companies enslave their employees; instead of thinking and understanding, they not only expect you to take direction from Beijing but also force you to believe them. They silence you with the argument that “they know better than you”. In whichever country these companies operate, they ignore the laws of that country and violate the rights of its citizens.

Rajdeep or journalists/writers like Rajdeep who cry about “freedom of press” despite taking their salaries, should ask the question as to how PoK which is Pak-occupied Kashmir becomes “Pak-administered Kashmir”. What’s more, the same media gang awards the so-called gold medal of journalism to BBC, whose editorial policy states “Pak-administered Kashmir”.

After all, what kind of mentality is it wherein Indian people working in Indian offices start accepting the terminology coined by the British or the Chinese as per their editorial policy? The answer to this which Rajdeep or the media gang may not know or pretend not to know, is – salary; the answer is – writing for a price.

PS: I am a former employee of a Chinese company. Just like I once was at Aaj Tak, Navbharat Times, Dainik Bhaskar, Dainik Jagran. Neither have I ever disclosed business data related to any Indian company, nor will I disclose the same about any Chinese company. Therefore, the entire article has been written within the editorial policy. Those policies which can cause harm to the country, are harmful.

NewsClick office sealed by Delhi Police special cell after day-long raids over China funds case

After conducting extensive raids on around 30 locations related to NewsClick and people associated with it, the special cell of Delhi Police sealed the main office premises of the Leftist news portal on Tuesday, 3rd October.

After the sealing, the promoters and staffers of NewsClick will have to approach the court to get the premises back. Since 6 am in the morning, extensive raids have been going on in multiple premises. Laptops, phones and other gadgets have also been seized by the Delhi Police.

Earlier, it was reported that a fresh case has been registered under UAPA against NewsClick over receiving suspicious funding from China.

As part of the investigation, editor of NewsClick Prabir Purkayastha and writers Paranjoy Guha Thakurta and Urmilesh were brought to the special cell offices in the national capital today.

Meanwhile, in Mumbai, teams of the Delhi Police special cell & Mumbai police conducted searches at the residence of activist Teesta Setalvad.

The raids are being conducted on a case registered on August 17 under UAPA and other sections of IPC, which include UAPA, 153A of IPC (promoting enmity between two groups), and 120 B of IPC (criminal conspiracy).

It is pertinent to note that NewsClick has been under the scanner for illicit foreign funding since the year 2021 – when Abhisar Sharma was working for the portal as well. Teesta Setalvad and Gautam Navlakha were also accused of taking funds form China that were obtained through newsClick.

Earlier on August 22, the Delhi High Court issued notice to news portal NewsClick’s Editor in Chief Prabir Purkayastha on a plea filed by Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EoW), seeking direction to vacate its interim order asking the probe agency not to take any coercive action against the news site, news agency ANI reported.

The investigation conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) unveiled that an overseas fund amounting to Rs. 38.05 crores was deceitfully injected into NewsClick over a span of three years.

After the ED investigation in 2021, an investigation by the New York Times in August 2023 uncovered an ecosystem of activist organisations, non-profits, shell corporations, and their intimate ties to China and Chinese propaganda. Notably, Neville Roy Singham is at the heart of this network. The article read, “What is less known, and is hidden amid a tangle of nonprofit groups and shell companies, is that Mr Singham works closely with the Chinese government media machine and is financing its propaganda worldwide.”

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann admits increasing loan burden of the state, asks Governor to ‘convince’ PM Modi to not collect loan repayment for next 5 years

On Tuesday (3 October), Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann admitted that his government has increased the loan burden of the state. He informed that his government has raised loans worth Rs 47,107 crore in just 18 months of its tenure. He also urged Governor Banwarilal Purohit to convince PM Modi to not collect repayment of loan (moratorium on debt repayment) for at least the next five years.

Additionally, Punjab CM Mann also asked the Governor to take up the issue of Rural Development Fund (RDF) with the Prime Minister.

Bhagwant Mann said, “I would also urge upon you (Governor) to convince Hon’ble Prime Minister to not only release the pending RDF but also accord a moratorium on debt repayment of the State for at least 5 years.”

Notably, he made this announcement while replying to the Governor’s letter in which he had sought details of the Rs 50,000 crore loan that the Mann-led AAP government had raised during its tenure.

In his reply letter, Mann claimed that nearly 57% of the loan had been spent only to repay the interest on loans inherited by the previous state governments. He noted that an additional Rs 47,107.6 crore was added to the debt, out of which, Rs 27,016 crore were spent on debt servicing.

According to Mann’s Demi Official (DO) letter, the AAP government borrowed Rs 47,107 crore while it ended up spending Rs 48,530 crore during its tenure in the state.

As per the details furnished in his letter, from April 2022 to August 2023, the net addition to the Punjab’s debt had been Rs 47,107.6 crore. This includes market loans, loans from NABARD, externally aided project loans and long-term loan under Special Assistance for Creation of Capital Assets.

The Punjab CM added that the government has recorded an increase in receipts. He added that the additional receipts have helped immensely in making value-accretive investments and initiating payment of arrears and unpaid dues.

After giving details regarding loan and expenditure, CM Mann urged the Governor to “convince Hon’ble Prime Minister to not only release the pending RDF but also accord a moratorium on debt repayment of the state for at least 5 years”.

In his letter, he argued, “This will provide much-needed relief to the strained financial position of the state and would give some fiscal elbow room to your government to accelerate the growth of revenue and the pace of the development.”

‘Should Hindus take over all the rights then’: PM Modi in Chhattisgarh lashes out at Congress over ‘jitni abadi utna haq’, questions details of MoU with China

On 3rd October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at Congress while addressing a public meeting at Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh. PM Modi pointed out that Congress wants to divide Hindus in the country by bringing up castes. He further hit out at the opposition party over the MoU signed by the Gandhis with China.

Congress jumped goalposts for political gains

Speaking about the caste census and Congress campaign suggesting a division of resources based on population share, PM Modi said, “It seems that Congress has taken a new stance since yesterday. The leaders are now saying that “as much population, so much right”. In my opinion, the poor should be recognized as the country’s largest population; therefore, my only objective is to improve their living conditions.”

He recalled former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s infamous speech where he insinuated that Muslims have the first right to the Country’s resources. PM Modi said, “However, I cannot help but wonder what the former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, would think of this new approach. He used to say that the minority has the primary right to the country’s resources, and among the minorities, Muslims have the first right. But now, Congress is saying that the population of a community will determine who has the first right to the country’s resources. If population is the deciding factor, then who has the first right to the resources? Who are the largest population? The Congress must clarify its position. Does it want to diminish the rights of minorities or even remove them? Should the Hindus, who have the largest population, take over all the rights? These are important questions that need to be addressed.”

PM Modi’s response came after post the caste census in Bihar, Congress has been using the slogan, “jitni abadi utna haq” to essentially claim that reservation and representation of the marginalised should be increased. It is pertinent to note that the caste census included even Muslims and Christians in SC and OBC category.

‘Congress is being run by anti-India elements from behind the curtains’

PM Modi hit out at Congress for ignoring the senior leadership. He added that the party is being run by anti-India elements from behind the curtain. He said, “Its own members are no longer running the Congress party. Senior leaders of Congress remain silent without being asked to speak up or daring to do so. Congress has been outsourced to individuals who are working with anti-India powers, and they are the ones running it behind the curtains. The Congress party’s agenda is to divide Hindus and destroy Bharat while creating a division among the poor. We have developed schemes to benefit the poor in the last ten years. The poor are the largest community; if we uplift them, the country will progress automatically.”

PM Modi further called out the Congress party for not revealing the details of the MoU signed between Gandhis and China. He said, “Congress has not yet disclosed the details of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with an undisclosed country, which is speculated to be China. The entire nation is waiting for the disclosure. Since the signing of the MoU, Congress has been heavily criticizing India and portraying the country in a negative light. It appears that their affection for India is diminishing with each passing day. It is my duty to warn every citizen of the country about the potential conspiracy of Congress.”

‘Poor have the first right on the resources irrespective of the community’

“It is important to emphasize that the poor have the first right to the country’s resources, regardless of their community. The poor can come from any community, whether it be SC, ST, OBC, or general category. For me, the largest community in India is the poor, and we must work towards uplifting them. The Congress party aims to divide the people of the country, which is why they speak in a new tone. Decades of Congress rule have only led to poverty, and they have always divided society on caste lines to maintain their vote bank”, the PM asserted.

Congress-China MoU

In 2008, during UPA1, the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Congress party signed an agreement for the sharing of high-level information and collaboration. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) also gave the two parties the “opportunity to consult each other on important bilateral, regional and international developments”. Notably, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been trustees of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation since 2005, while Sonia Gandhi is the foundation’s chairperson.

Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections

The Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh are expected to take place in November 2023. The Election Commission of India is yet to announce the dates.

Raids on NewsClick: Delhi police held midnight meet before raiding 30 locations

0

As Delhi police raided different premises linked to NewsClick on Tuesday, sources informed that the special cell of the Delhi police held a late-night meeting on Tuesday.

The investigation, which is still underway was launched on the basis of information from central agencies. Sources also said that an FIR was filed at the New Delhi Range of Delhi Police special cell against NewsClick.

As part of the investigation, editor of NewsClick Prabir Purkayastha and writers Paranjoy Guha Thakurta and Urmilesh were brought to the special cell offices in the national capital today.

Sources said that the first meeting before launching the crackdown was held by the top officials of the special cell on Monday (October 2). The meeting was attended by over 200 police personnel at 2 am at the special cell office in Lodhi colony.

Apart from Senior Officials, the mobile handset of Junior officials were kept at the station, to hide any leaked information.

The special team carried out raids at more than 30 locations, sources said, adding that suspects were marked in the A, B, and C categories.

The raid team on Tuesday morning also reached at Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury’s residence to question his staffer Sri Narayan’s son Sunmit Kumar. The raid team seized the mobile, laptop, and hard drive of Sunmit Kumar, who works at NewsClick, sources said.

Earlier on August 10 a report in the New York Times had alleged that NewsClick was part of a global network that receives funding from American billionaire Neville Roy Singham.

Singham is known as a socialist benefactor of far-left causes, is at the centre of a lavishly funded influence campaign that defends China and pushes its propaganda. Neville Roy Singham is said to have close ties to the Chinese government media machine.

Old video of Leicester violence provocateur Ali Dawah, calling for the execution of apostates in Islamic land, goes viral

On Tuesday (3rd October), a video of UK-based Islamic preacher Ali Dawah, calling for the public execution of apostates (individuals who renunciate religion) after the takeover of Islam all over the world, went viral on social media.

He was heard baying for the blood of an ex-Muslim and apostate named Ridvan Aydemir, who runs the popular YouTube channel ‘The Apostate Prophet.’ It must be mentioned that Ali Dawah was the frontrunner in peddling the conspiracy theory about RSS’ involvement in the 2022 Leicester violence.

In the video, the Islamic preacher was heard saying, “Yeah there’s a reason why there’s a capital punishment because people like you, little weaklings, who leave their religion and cause corruption in the land by spreading it. The capital punishment and Islamic law will be applied to you. We have no doubt and we are proud of that.”

Ali Dawah pointed out that the killing of apostates, in the land of Islam, would be sanctioned by the Emir (Muslim military commander). He informed common Muslims would not need to take the matter into their own hands like ‘idiots.’

“You know what we’ll be watching…because if you’re going to cause corruption in the land that’s going to cause more damage to the society as a whole because the Sharia didn’t come to protect an individual’s right,” he justified.

Ali Dawah then rationalised the barbaric punishments, sanctioned under the Sharia, by drawing false analogies with someone drunk diving and killing pedestrians in the process.

“Hey, can I drink okay? Sure, drink alcohol, run someone over, kill them and (create) all this kind of chaos…No, Islam says (that) the right of the community is greater than you, individual, wanting your right to freedom which is BS (bullsh*t). Absolutely BS. Don’t get me started,” he further advocated.

The 59-second-long footage of Ali Dawah’s vicious tirade against apostates was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by YouTuber David Wood on Tuesday (October 3). It was extracted from an 18.5 minute-long-video, which was published on the YouTube channel of the radical preacher on August 15, 2020.

Despite his open threats to kill apostates, YouTube did not remove the disturbing video from its platform.

Ali Dawah mainstreams conspiracy theory of RSS involvement in Leicester violence

During the anti-Hindu violence that broke out in Leicester in England’s East Midlands region in 2022, Islamist scholar Ali Dawah tried to lend credence to the conspiracy theory that RSS workers came in droves to stoke communal tensions in the area.

In a video published on his YouTube channel on September 23 2022, he caught up with Yatin Bhimani, owner of a Coach company, to seek clarification about a conspiracy theory that he and his co-religionist had disseminated around that time.

Yatin, who hails from India, owns a fleet of 4 buses and runs a travel agency by the name of ‘Angel Tours.’ Islamists had accused the agency of ferrying RSS workers to Muslim areas in Leicester and creating a law and order situation with the help of a Hindu temple in Ealing.

The owner of the tour company, Angel Tours, denied all the allegations and said that his buses had not gone to Leicester between August and September 2022.

He clarified that the buses of his company always stop in front of the temple as it is a major landmark and people are well-acquainted with the place. The owner, Yatin Bhimani, said that his buses are parked there only for convenience, and his coach company has no link with the temple.

Ali Dawah shrewdly used the interview to rant about the ‘greatness’ of his Faith and how it supposedly emphasises the principle of justice. He also claimed that Muslims were provoked by Hindutva goons and how a mosque was burnt down, despite the fact that the Leicester police had debunked the fake news.

Ali used his dominating personality to make sweeping statements like the supposed involvement of PM Modi in anti-Muslim violence in India. He also tried to put words in the mouth of Yatin and forced him to condemn Modi and RSS.

“If anyone commits violence against Muslims, Christians or Hindus, then, I condemn them,” Yatin said. While the Islamist was able to convince his naive followers that he believed in inter-faith dialogue, Ali Dawah’s attempt at setting agenda in favour of Islamists did not miss the experienced eye.

He also worked alongside hate preacher and fugitive, Zakir Naik, during the fundraising for the construction of a grand mosque and Dawah (proselytism) centre in Oslo, Norway.

‘Hunka belonged to a unit that did not commit crime’: American news organisation Politico defends Canada for honouring a Nazi in its Parliament

0

On 2nd October, Politico published an op-ed by author Keir Giles defending Canada in the Yaroslav Hunka Controversy. Giles is the author of several books on Russia, including his latest one titled “Russia’s War on Everybody”. According to him, the Hunka controversy is an outcome of massive Russian propaganda. Giles called the whole controversy a lie; he argued that fighting against the USSR during World War II did not necessarily means that the unit was Nazi.

Giles noted that the outrage stemmed from Hunka’s association with one of the Waffen-SS units. Waffen-SS, where SS stands for Schutzstaffel (Protective Echelon), were the black-uniformed elite troops who self-described themselves as the “political soldiers” of the Nazi Party. Hunka was part of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS that, comprised Ukrainian volunteers.

Giles argued that the history of that time is complicated. As Hunka was in a unit comprised of foreign volunteers, they were, according to him, on administrative rather than ideological grounds. However, Giles said the contention is hard to sell to the audience who “believe” the main objective of the SS was genocide.

Citing several investigations, including the Nuremberg trials, Giles said the unit Hunka belonged to did not commit war crimes or atrocities. Targeting Russia, Giles claimed that Moscow “shouts” Nazis whenever they want despite their own history of aggression and atrocities during WWII. He further argued that Russians were never tried for the alleged “war crimes” they committed during WWII, unlike Nazis.

Giles further claimed that Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center’s statement that the atrocities committed by Hunka’s unit are well-documented was false and “doesn’t seem to have any more substance than the accusation by Russia”.

Citing the 1986 Commission report on War Crimes by the Canadian government, Giles argued that famous Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal himself was found to have made broad accusations against the unit in question, and the commission found them “nearly totally useless” and “put the Canadian government to a considerable amount of purposeless work.”

Source: 1986 Report by Government of Canada on War Crimes

Interestingly, Giles cherry-picked the parts of the report that were accessed by OpIndia as well. Giles cited the second part of the report on page no 258 to make his point. However, In the same report, the commission concluded the division could not be charged with war crimes because of the “absence of the evidence of participation in or knowledge of specific war crimes”. Furthermore, the report only argued about the 217 members of the Galicia division, which was far less than the actual number, which was over 70,000.

The The Huta Pieniacka Massacre

Yaroslav Hunka was a member of the First Ukrainian Division, originally named the 14th Waffen-Grenadier Division der SS (Ukrainische Nr 1), also known as the “Galicia” Division, that was created during World War II in the western part of Ukraine. One particular incident involving the 4th battalion of the Galicia division is the Huta Pieniacka Massacre. Giles claimed that there is no “evidence” that the unit in question was involved in a war crime. Assuming his knowledge and understanding of World War II, as he has written book after book and article after article on Russia’s role in WWII, it can be assumed that he has done his homework properly. However, in order to defend Canada and Hunka, Giles conveniently skipped the Huta Pieniacka Massacre.

There is a research paper written by Per Anders Rudling that was published in The Journal of Slavic Military Studies’s September 2012 issue titled “‘They Defended Ukraine’: The 14 Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (Galizische Nr. 1) Revisited“. The paper provided details of the unit in question in an elaborate manner.

According to the paper, during the OUN-UPA campaign of mass murder in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia, Huta Pieniacka, a Polish village, served as a refuge to the Jewish and Polish survivors. The Waffen-SS Galizien and UPA became aware that the village cooperated with pro-Soviet partisans, leading to a well-orchestrated attack.

The fourth regiment under Sturmbannführer Binz led the Huta Pieniacka massacre, which resulted in the deaths of civilians, mostly women and children. Historians agree on Waffen-SS Galizien’s involvement, but the scale of the massacre is unclear among them. Ukrainian estimates put the death toll at nearly 500, while Polish sources suggest 700 to 1,500 victims.

The massacre occurred after locals in Pidhirtsiv informed Ukrainian police that Huta Pieniacka sheltered Jews, supported Bolshevik partisans, and stored weapons. When the Ukrainian SS arrived to inspect, there was an alleged conflict between the troops and the villagers, leading to the brutal massacre. Testimonies by survivors and UPA members confirm the village’s burning and the killing of its residents, with some accounts linking it to the sheltering of Jews and pro-Soviet partisans.

The paper cited multiple sources narrating what happened on 28th February 1944, the day of the massacre. One of the citations says:

“On February 27, 44 [sic] at 5.00 AM the 14th Division of the Ukrainian SS surrounded the village Huta Pieniacka from three sides, shooting at the houses from a distance, then set some buildings on fire and then entered the village, plundering all the belongings of the inhabitants. The people were gathered in the church or shot in the houses. Those gathered in the church—men, women and children—were taken outside in groups, children killed in front of their parents.

Some men and women were shot in the cemetery, others were gathered in barns, where they were shot. The village was completely burned down. The only people who saved themselves were those who on finding out about the approaching Ukrainian SS, managed to hide in the forests (only men) or those who pretended to be dead or managed to hide in potato holes in the basements. Right now it is difficult to establish how many survived as they spread themselves around the area. Many of the injured with burned arms and legs were being treated—impossible to say how many–by people from surrounding villages who took them to their homes after the SS division left.”

This was reported by Uta WSK from Huta Pieniacka who survived, badly burned. The action of the SS was to be in revenge for the killing of 4 SS men on February 23. “About 60 men entered the village in the evening and began to plunder the houses. Since they wore German uniforms and spoke Ukrainian, they were taken for a disguised group of criminals. Thus the local defense action started, killing two for sure, and wounding several others. Seeing that the Ukrainian SS came to the area, it is possible that such cases may repeat themselves in every Polish village”.

Another citation noted:

“On 28 February 1944 around five and six in the morning Ukrainian nationalists together with troops from the division “SS-Galizien” surrounded the Polish village of Huta Pieniacka in the Ponikovestkii raion of the L’viv oblast, opening fire upon the village. After they entered the village, they gathered all of the residents of said village on the square in front of the church, forced them into groups by beating them, led the groups into the barns, locked the barns, then poured gasoline and burned the barns with the people inside. Anyone trying to escape was shot and thrown into the fire. In this way, more than 700 Polish people were shot and burned, and 120 houses with adjoining structures were also burned. Livestock, bread and other property were taken away by the bandits.

The Huta Pieniacka resident Franko Iosifivich Kobelianskii explained that “early in the morning on 28 February 1944, two rockets were fired upon our village, thereafter our village came under fire. After the shooting, our village was surrounded from all sides by Germans and civilians, emerging from the forest, all of whom were armed with machine guns and rifles. They entered the village and began to gather the entire village population on the square in front of the church. After gathering the men, women, old people and children, the Germans and the civilians drove them into groups of 20–30, chased them into barns, closed the buildings and burned the buildings together with the people inside. Those who tried to run were killed.

In this way 600–700 people were killed and burned, all livestock was taken away, as was footwear and clothes.” The Huta Pieniacka resident explains: ‘On 28 February 1944 our village came under fire, and soon after the shooting ended the SS’ troops and Germans arrived, including many men in civilian clothes on horse carts. The SS men were Ukrainians, they entered all the houses and gathered all the old people, children and youth on the square in front of the church, chased part of the people into the church, and thereafter some sort of Kommendant of the SS men—he spoke Ukrainian—took the old people and the children and in groups sent them into the barn, locked them up and burned the people together with the barn. I was in the church and was afraid to leave, and an SS man called me out of the church.

They gathered us in groups, there were children, old people and women among us, and about 40–50 people marched us into one of the barns, and in it people screamed with inhuman voices—at this point we realized, that they will burn us alive. The people began to run, and the SS men opened fire on them with machine guns. I fell between two rocks and remained alive. Then they gathered us who were still alive and forced us back into the barn, closed the doors and put it on fire. When the barn was burning I broke two planks and ran out of the fire, into the forest. The rest were all burned alive.”

These are just two verbatim citations, and there are several others that narrate the same story. There are enough citations, papers, reports and other evidence to prove that Hunka’s unit was involved in atrocities during World War II. However, the likes of Giles feel that it is more important to ridicule Russia than criticise those who house and celebrate Nazis.

Standing ovation to Nazi soldier in Canadian parliament and the aftermath

On 22nd September, the Canadian House of Commons gave a standing ovation to Yaroslav Hunka, a World War II veteran who fought for “Ukrainian independence” against Russian aggressors. This is how the speaker of the House, Anthony Rota, introduced him. The 98-year-old war veteran, however, was a member of a SS unit established in 1943 by the Nazis. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was also present during the occasion.

The First Ukrainian Division, originally named the 14th Waffen-Grenadier Division der SS (Ukrainische Nr 1), also known as the “Galicia” Division, was created during World War II in the western part of Ukraine. Soon after Hunka’s links to Nazi SS were revealed, Canada faced criticism worldwide.

In the aftermath, on 26th September, Canada’s Speaker of the House of Commons, Anthony Rota, resigned. Rota said he had made a mistake. Interestingly, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and all the Canadian MPs threw Rota under the bus after being globally criticised for celebrating a Nazi in the Parliament despite the fact that Canada has a long history of housing Nazi war criminals.

The funny thing was that Trudeau blamed ‘Russian propaganda’ after Canada’s parliament faced global shame for celebrating Nazis. He called the incident deeply embarrassing and somehow managed to blame Russia for the goof-up his government did by celebrating the Nazis.

He said, “Obviously, it is extremely upsetting that this happened. The speaker has acknowledged his mistake and has apologised. But this is something that is deeply embarrassing to the Parliament of Canada and, by extension, to all Canadians. I think particularly the Jewish MPs and all members of the Jewish community across the country commemorating Yom Kippur today. I think it’s gonna be really important that all of us push back against Russian propaganda and disinformation and continue our steadfast and unequivocal support for Ukraine as we did last week by announcing further measures to stand with Ukraine in Russia’s illegal war against it.”

Yaroslav Hunka is just 1 example of Canada’s Nazi problem: Read how WWII criminals found a safe haven there after escaping Europe

Canada has many skeletons in the closet. The standing ovation to Nazi war criminal Yaroslav Hunka in the Canadian Parliament on 22nd September was not an isolated incident. Canada’s Nazi problem is an old one. It has repeatedly disregarded and continues to disregard the values of international justice, law, and rules-based international order. And that has made Canada, historically, a safe haven for Nazis and hunting grounds for Jewish groups and other officials looking to bring them to book.

The honour bestowed by the Trudeau government upon the 98-year-old former member of the Nazi 14th SS-Volunteer Division “Galicia” was a repeat of a similar incident that occurred in 2007. Yaroslav Hunka was previously honoured by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in 2007.

According to X user and researcher Yuri Deigin, Hunka was one among several other Waffen SS war criminals who were lauded at a ceremony 16 years ago where the then Ukrainian ambassador to Canada, Dr Igor Ostash, was a special guest and also delivered a speech.

Over a dozen former soldiers of the First Ukrainian Division of The Ukrainian National Army were felicitated at an event organised on 21 January 2007 to mark Ukraine’s Independence from Russia in Toronto. They were honoured with “Medal of Merit”.

Safe to say, had it not been revealed that the man being honoured in the House of Commons is a Nazi war criminal, the University of Alberta would perhaps still have been receiving funds in Yaroslav Hunka’s name. The university’s Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies has had a $30,000 endowment since 2019 carrying Hunko’s name.

The university has now reportedly closed the endowment and returned the money to Hunka’s family. “The university recognizes and regrets the unintended harm caused,” read a statement from Verna Yiu, vice-president academics.

That is not all. The co-founder of the Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies (CIUS), Peter Savaryn, who also served as the University of Alberta’s chancellor from 1982 to 1986, was himself a 14th Waffen veteran.

Moreover, according to a Journal of Slavic Military Studies article by Lund University academic Per Anders Rudling, in 2011 the CIUS reportedly established endowments in honour of three Waffen SS veterans namely Roman Kolisnyk, Levko Babij, and Edward Brodacky.

A free run to Nazis in Canada

In the 1990s, war crimes investigator Steve Rambam secretly recorded the wartime testimonies of as many as 60 former Nazi soldiers and collaborators living in Canada. This included the notorious Antanas Kenstavicius from Hope, B.C.

Kenstavicius was a former member of a collaborationist Lithuanian police force who told Rambam about participating in the killing of around 5,500 Jews. His was the only case that was reportedly pursued by the Canadian law enforcement but Kenstavicius died of natural causes on the very first day of his deportation hearings.

Kenstavicius was 90 when the then-Canadian government led by the Liberal Party finally decided to begin deportation trials albeit to no avail. “Canada is where the Nazis are. Canada is the unknown haven for Nazis. Everybody knows about Argentina, but nobody knows about Canada,” Rambam told the Los Angeles Times in 1997.

According to the National Post, in 1997, historian and president of Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) Irving Abella cited a conversation with then PM Pierre Trudeau in which the latter said that Canada did not pursue Axis war criminals because “they were afraid of exacerbating relationships between Jews and Eastern European ethnic communities”.

On 23 January 1985, Robert Kaplan, a former member of the House of Commons raised the issue of the suggested presence of Joseph Mengele, infamously known as the Angel of Death, in Canada. Mengele was a Nazi war criminal known to have performed deadly experiments on prisoners in Auschwitz.

In 1992, the Justice Department ruled that it would not prosecute Michael Pawlowski, who was suspected of having helped kill 400 Jews and 80 non-Jewish Poles in the then Soviet Republic of Byelorussia in the summer of 1942.

In 1990, Stephen Reistetter became the third person to be charged under the War Crimes of the Criminal Code but, on the eve of pre-trial arguments, the federal government dropped the charges against him on the grounds of insufficient evidence. Reistetter was charged with kidnapping 3,000 Jews when he was serving as an official of the Hlinka party in war-time Slovakia.

The first person to be charged under the 1987 amendment to the criminal code was Imre Finta, a Hungarian-born former restaurateur from Hamilton, Ontario. He was a member of the pro-Nazi Hungarian gendarmerie during World War II and was accused of deporting and murdering Jews. However, Finta was found not guilty.

Another Nazi war criminal Josef Nemsila died without having to face his sins. Nemsila, a Slovakian Nazi, was protected from deportation by a Canadian court. He helped round up 100,000 Jews to be deported to concentration camps.

Despite finding that Peteris Vitols had not concealed his membership in the Latvian Army or Waffen SS during his entry into Canada and that he may not have been asked about his wartime activities, Judge McKeown in September 1998 found no evidence that he personally committed war crimes.

Helmut Oberlander, mistaken as the last known wartime Nazi in Canada, was in between trials to avoid deportation to Germany over WW2 atrocities. The Canadian justice system failed Oberlander’s victims as he died in the “comfort of his family and home” in 2021.

Oberlander worked as a translator for Einsatzkommando 10a, known as Ek10a, one of the special police task forces that operated in Ukraine when it was occupied by Germany. His squad was responsible for the murder of 100,000 people most of whom were Jews.

In 2012, a group of former prisoners of Dachau and Auschwitz urged the Canadian government to take action against Vladimir Katriuk in view of new evidence pointing to his role in the massacre in Eastern Europe. Katriuk was 90 at the time and had been living a good life in Canada.

Katriuk was part of a Waffen SS unit operating in Belarus and had been living in Canada since 1951. Katriuk in 2012 was implicated in the 1943 massacre of residents of the village of Khatyn, whom the Germans suspected were supporting partisan forces.

In 1995, suspected war criminal Konrad Kalejs, who had been scheduled for a deportation hearing in Toronto, fled Canada just hours before his visa expired. Kalejs was suspected of being a key officer in the notorious Arajs Kommando of the WW2 Latvian Security Police. All Canada managed to do after was add him to a watch list of persons inadmissible to Canada.

Chrystia Freeland and her familial ties with the Galicia Division of the Waffen SS

As far as the grave human rights violation in Canada is concerned, the fault lies at the very foundation. Canada’s deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland’s grandfather reportedly worked for a Nazi newspaper. This newspaper was recruited for the Galicia Division of the Waffen-SS.

Yaroslav Hunka, the Nazi the Canadian Parliament gave a standing ovation to, belonged to this very division. Freeland’s maternal grandfather Michael Chomiak edited a Nazi newspaper for Ukrainian exiles in occupied Krakow called Krakivski Visti. The newspaper was published on a printing press seized from a Jewish owner.

Freeland has often cited her maternal grandfather as a political inspiration. When Freeland’s link to her Nazi grandfather was reported for the first time in 2017, she reportedly called it a bunch of Russian propaganda. Krakivski Visti published articles encouraging young Ukrainian men to join the Waffen SS.

The Galicia Division of Waffen SS and its links to Canada

The First Ukrainian Division was originally named the 14th Waffen-Grenadier Division der SS (Ukrainische Nr 1) and it was also known as the “Galicia” Division. It was a World War II Nazi Germany military formation made up predominantly of military volunteers with a Ukrainian ethnic background from the area of Galicia.

The division was formed in 1943 by SS-Brigadeführer Wächter, a Nazi Party leader and a high ranking high-ranking member of the SS, with as many as 70,000 volunteers coming forward to join.

It is notable that SS was the main paramilitary group under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Nazi Germany, and was primarily responsible for running Holocaust operations. 14th SS-Volunteer Division Galicia was made up of volunteers, which means that Yaroslav Hunka joined the unit on his own will, and was not conscripted.

The members of the First Ukrainian Division have been deemed war criminals by several experts. However, Canadian inquiry into their history did not recognise them as war criminals. Interestingly, there is clear evidence that Canada housed at least 3,000 war criminals.

Canadian authorities established a commission to look into war criminals, and the commission headed by Justice Jules Deschenes submitted its report in December 1986 titled “Commission of Inquiry on War Crimes”.

According to the commission report, in February 1949, the immigration applications of the members of the Galicia division were rejected by the Canadian authorities on the ground of them being members of the German Wehrmacht or the SS.

However, in May 1950, the Canadian Cabinet decided to give Ukrainians who were lodged in the United Kingdom at that time permission to be admitted to Canada following special security screening. The cabinet categorically said that they should “not be rejected on the grounds of their service in the German Army”. In its report, the Commission gave “clean chit” to the Galicia Division.

Calls for justice continue to fall on deaf ears in Canada

In a recent development, a Jewish advocacy group has called on the Trudeau government to release a 40-year-old report and other documents containing details about alleged Nazi war criminals living in Canada.

According to a report by Ottawa Citizen, the Liberal Party government of Canada has withheld a second part of a 1986 government commission report about Nazis who settled in Canada. Moreover, another 1986 report examining how Nazis were able to get into Canada is also heavily censored.

The Ottawa Citizen report claims that over 600 pages of the said document accessed by it through Access to Information Law have been censored. “We’ve run up against a brick wall,” said David Matas, the honorary counsel for B’nai Brith adding that the organisation was also pushing for the release of RCMP and Department of Justice files on alleged Nazi war criminals in Canada.

And yet, Canada, which has a serious Nazi problem festering in its backyard for decades, is lecturing India about international law and human rights.
