There is a ‘Left’ in ‘Left Wing Extremism’: We know leftists are a danger to democracy, why do we pretend like it’s a debate?

This is a picture of the Pope travelling in his special vehicle, with security escorts on either side. Good for him.

If you think about it though, there is something deeply ironic about this image. Why would a man who is supposed to be infallible (yes literally!), with a direct hotline to God himself need such temporal protection?

Because we know that despite all obscurantism in the world, reality matters.

For the same reasons that most astrologers are not billionaire investors on the stock market. You would think that anybody with common sense should be able to figure this out, but it doesn’t happen as much as it should. Millions of people are somehow able to suspend their common sense and carry on.

Something similar happens with leftists, Indian elections, the media and the general public. We act as if what is happening isn’t happening. And what is obvious isn’t actually so. Even though it’s right before our eyes. For example:

Untitled.png

As India’s mammoth General Elections roll out in phases all across our great nation, the biggest security arrangements, the tightest precautions are taken in the so-called “LWE affected districts.”

In many places, polling is stopped by 3 PM so that the poll officials can scramble back to safety before the sun sets. At times, the Election Commission has considered stopping the use of indelible ink.  Because people in such areas fear violent reprisals if they are seen to have participated in the democratic process.

So what is this LWE and what does it stand for? Well, LWE is short for “Left Wing Extremism”. Voting begins in Jharkhand today. Small states like Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are all voting in multiple phases just so that the EC can ensure maximum security against the threat of Left Wing Extremism.

And yet in India, we act as if we have all been collectively hypnotized as if nobody can hear the word “Left” in “Left Wing Extremism”.

We send thousands of troops and spend hundreds of crores making sure our democratic process is safe from Left Wing Extremism. And yet, we act as if leftists are not a threat to democracy. A sort of cognitive dissonance.

Our media, our academia, our intelligentsia is busy debating the supposed threat to democracy from BJP and Modi! And more often than not, it is the leftists who are on TV, in newspapers and journals, giving lectures on how to be more “democratic”. We watch, we respond, we debate and discuss.

All this while, everyone on either side just scrolls through reports about India having to use thousands of troops to guard against left-wing violence. Both sides barely notice what is actually happening. A few weeks ago, an elected BJP MLA who was campaigning in Chhattisgarh, was murdered by violent left wingers. The ideology that drove his killers was barely commented upon by anybody. It was almost as if he died of natural causes or in a natural disaster like flooding or earthquake.

Why have we become immune to reality? Why is our political discourse happening in an alternate universe? Over there, in that parallel universe, left wingers and right wingers engage in a battle of wits over who is a greater threat to our democracy. Ghosts like “Hindu terror” are a much debated and much polarizing issue in this election. How did that happen? Can you name any part of this country or the world where “Hindu terror” is making candidates fear for their lives while campaigning? Or making voters fear for their lives while voting?

Terrorism is not this nameless, formless, incomprehensible presence that forces its way into our lives in a completely unpredictable and unforeseen manner. We know exactly what drives it and when and where it tries to prey on us. There is a reason why polling has to be stopped at 3 pm in many parts of Chhattisgarh but not in Bengaluru or Mumbai. It has nothing to do with the weather, the time zone, the traffic nor the pollution levels. All sides know that it is leftists who are the problem.

And yet we have left-wing rockstars who enthral TV audiences with their lectures on democracy. Absurd. And then we have right-wingers trying to debunk them on the ideological plane. As if reality is not speaking loudly enough about who is the real danger to our democracy.

Reality is the most important thing of all. Let’s reconnect with it and stop wasting everybody’s time with pointless debates.

Let the next intellectual leftist who writes a 1000 word essay on the dangers of “right-wing Hindus” volunteer to lead a polling party without police protection to Bastar. We’ll see then.

India Today, Republic TV crew including lady journalists attacked by TMC goons for exposing Bengal violence

Republic TV has reported that their crew was allegedly attacked by TMC goons for exposing the violence taking place during the ongoing general election.

According to Republic TV, their journalist Shantashree, who was reporting from Asansol along with their video journalist were travelling where TMC goons allegedly attacked the car with lathis and broke the window. She said that they were following BJP MP Babul Supriyo’s car which triggered them and they attacked them. As per the report, media vehicles which are following BJP leaders’ cars are being targeted.

The goons also allegedly hurled abuses towards the media persons and were chased away when they tried to report. Earlier in the day, the TMC workers allegedly attacked Supriyo’s car in Asansol and vandalised it.

Over and above the Republic TV crew, India Today’s crew was also allegedly attacked by TMC goons and their journalist Manogya Loiwal manhandled.

Bengal continues to remain one of the most violent states when it comes to poll violence under Mamata Banerjee led TMC government. Continuing the trends of political violence and intimidations during the 2019 Lok Sabha election have continued in West Bengal as crude bombs have been found at a polling booth in Krishnanagar, West Bengal and also bombs have been recovered from a polling booth in Santipur, Nadia district.

The fourth phases of Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal have been mired in controversy as sporadic instances of violence have been reported throughout the state just as the first three phases of elections. Threats, intimidations, bomb attacks, proxy voting have also been recorded in some of the Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal during the third phase of Lok Sabha elections.

Congress files petition against EC in SC for not taking action against alleged poll code violation by PM Modi and Amit Shah

The Congress party on Monday filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Election Commission for failing to take any action against Prime Minister Modi and BJP President for the alleged poll code violation. The Congress party alleged that military operations were used in the election campaign and hate speeches were made but the poll panel did not act despite numerous complaints.

The petition was filed by Congress MP Sushmita Dev. The top court will hear her petition on Tuesday. The Congress said 37 representations were given to the EC in which 10 could be classified as “hate speeches, virulent, divisive, polarising” by the top leaders of the BJP.

The Congress party further alleged that Narendra Modi had violated the Model Code of Conduct by allegedly holding a road show when he went to cast his vote in Ahmedabad. It claimed that chants of “Modi, Modi” were raised and that the Prime Minister waved at them.

The petition states, “It is in public domain that they have indulged in hate speeches, repeatedly used the armed forces for political propaganda, despite a clear prohibition on the same by the Respondent/ECI. Furthermore, the Prime Minister in blatant violation of the MCC held a rally on the day of polling in Gujarat on April 23rd, 2019 i.e. date of voting in the third phase of the election.”

It further stated, “The lack of decision despite cogent evidence, representations and exhortations to the Respondent/ECI demonstrates abdication and indecision and a complete absence of justice, in ensuring a level playing field in ensuing General Elections for the Lok Sabha. The inactions, omissions and commissions by the Respondent/ECI are in complete and direct violation of Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution and which are impeding free, fair and unbiased General Elections, 2019.“

While the Congress claims that Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are violating the poll code, their own party president is going around furthering the propaganda peddled by Naxals. He declared, at a recent rally in Madhya Pradesh, that the Modi government has included a provision in the Adivasi law which will empower the government to gun down Tribals (Adivasis) without having to face any consequences. And that was after he allied with extremist Muslims in Kerala, as claimed by Communists in the state.

AMU: Students oppose AMUSU president campaigning for Kanhaiya Kumar, pass no confidence motion against him

The student union president of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is facing the backlash for supporting CPI candidate of Begusarai, Kanhaiya Kumar. The students of the university have passed a no-confidence motion against its president, Salman Imtiaz for extending support to the wannabe politician who was once the JNU Students’ Union president himself.

The Vice-President of the union, Hamza Sufyan, sent a letter, duly signed by 107 students, to the VC, stating that the no-confidence motion against the President, Imtiaz was passed at the general body meeting conducted on April 25.

The letter stated that if Imtiaz had been given 14 days to justify his actions in front of the general body, failing which, the voting for the no-confidence motion would be conducted on May 10.

The letter also makes several severe allegations against the President. In the letter, the vice-president Sufyan alleges that the union president is in the habit of hiding important issues from the executive members like he had not disclosed his decision to support a specific candidate/party (Kanhaiya Kumar) during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The letter also alleged that Imtiaz has been caught with illegal weapons. In his letter, Sufiyan further accused Imtiaz of ‘terrorising’ students and attempting to ‘bury’ their voices. The letter states, “He has created a toxic environment for both the students and the administration.”

Meanwhile, AMU Union secretary, Huzaifa Amir, has refuted all the allegations. He claimed that no such motion, as claimed by the vice president, was passed during the general body meeting.

While speaking to Times of India, Amir said that he had attended the general body meeting held on April 25, but had left after a clash broke out between two factions of students and until then no such motion was passed.

He furthered that a no-confidence motion cannot be passed against someone in his absence and that Salman Imtiaz should be given the chance to clarify his stand. He also argued that the general body meeting could not have been convened by the vice president because he was not given the charge of affairs by Imtiaz before leaving for Begusarai to support Kanhaiya Kumar and therefore the meeting itself was invalid.

The student union body has been reportedly divided into two factions over the issue. However, the no-confidence motion has been reportedly sent to the chancellor of the university and the final decision on whether the motion was valid or not, will now be taken by him.

Meanwhile, Kanhaiya Kumar, who is contesting the Lok Sabha elections on a CPI ticket from Begusarai constituency, Bihar, has lately been unabashedly misusing his power and position to terrorize the locals of his constituency.

Recently, in an exclusive report, we revealed how an allegedly drunk Kanhaiya Kumar and his supporters had brutally beaten up BJP supporters. Previously, it was also reported that goons of Kanhaiya Kumar had attacked some locals on Kanhaiya’s instructions after they waved black flags during his roadshow.

Vijay Mallya’s son-in-law campaigns for Congress-NCP candidate while Rahul Gandhi wants to extract money from Mallya to pay for NYAY

Even as Congress President Rahul Gandhi gives sermons to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for shielding fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya and also intends to fund his NYAY scheme through extracting money from fugitive businessmen, Congress ally NCP are busy joining hands with Vijay Mallya’s son-in-law Samar Singh.

According to a report by Mid Day, Samar Singh, son-in-law of fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya was campaigning for NCP candidate Parth Pawar, a son of former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. Parth Pawar is contesting in the Lok Sabha elections as a joint candidate of NCP-Congress alliance from Maval constituency. It is believed that Singh handles Parth’s social media.

Mallya’s son-in-law campaigning for NCP candidate

“Samar Singh and Parth Pawar are friends for a long time. Samar and his wife are not much connected to the Mallya family as has been portrayed. Samar had joined Parth out of curiosity to see his friend contest the election and had visited few places with him to see the real situation. He has gone back to the US,” reportedly one of their common friends told Midday.

Interestingly, Samar Singh’s is actively involved with the Congress ally NCP even as Congress President Rahul Gandhi wants to extract from some of the industrialists and businessmen to fund his ‘NYAY’ scheme. Congress president Rahul Gandhi had recently said funds for his party’s “NYAY” minimum income guarantee scheme will come from the pockets of fugitive businessmen like Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.

“The money (for NYAY scheme) will come from the pockets of ‘chor’ (thieves) like Anil Ambani, Vijay Mallya to whom Chowkidar Narendra Modi has given money during the last four years… We will deposit it in the accounts of the poor, particularly women, irrespective of their caste, class or religion,” he had said in an election rally.

The attack on fugitives and other industrialists by the Gandhi scion came at a time when he was trying to deviate the criticism he had received by a large section of the middle-class population after he had put up an idea to tax the middle class to fund his flagship populist scheme NYAY, a minimum income guarantee scheme.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi announced the NYAY scheme on March 25 last month aiming to provide Rs 72,000 per year (Rs 6,000 per month) to the poorest 20 per cent families or 5 crore families in India living Below the Poverty Line (BPL).

However, one of Rahul Gandhi’s aide had spilt the bean regarding the funding pattern of the scheme. Noted economist Abhijit Banerjee, who advised the Congress party on the formulation of the scheme, had made some startling revelations regarding the rationale behind the funding of the scheme.

In an interview with Times Now, Banerjee said that the NYAY will have to funded by new taxes. He said that at present India’s fiscal deficit is so large that the scheme is simply not sustainable without raising taxes.

Following the backlash against overtaxing the middle class, Rahul Gandhi had then come up with another new idea to fund the Congress party’s minimum income guarantee scheme. Rahul Gandhi had said that his pet project NYAY will be funded by the amount recovered from bank loan defaulters and fugitives.

Watch: TMC workers seen rigging polls in East Burdwan, West Bengal, Election Commission removes Presiding Officer

Elections in West Bengal have been mired with violence and rampant rigging. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the first three phases of polling also saw massive violence in the state. With the fourth phase of voting underway, the violence in West Bengal has continued with crude bombs being found and BJP candidate Babul Supriyo being attacked. Now, a shocking visual has come to light where TMC workers can be seen openly rigging the elections in East Burdwan, West Bengal.

The video tweeted by DNA is from East Burdwan constituency Ketugram at polling booth number 104 and 107. The incident reportedly took place in the Khaji High School booth of East Burdwan.

In the video, it is evident that the TMC leader was staring at the EVM every time a voter was casting his or her vote to keep a vigil on who the person is voting for.

By law, anyone accompanying the voter inside the polling booth is not permitted and here, TMC workers can be seen accompanying voters in a bid to intimidate them and perhaps ensure that the vote is cast in TMC’s favour.

The Presiding Officer was allowing the alleged TMC leader to stand inside the polling booth keeping a vigil on voters. According to reports, the Presiding Officer was immediately removed after the incident came to light and was taken note of by the Election Commission.

BJP has alleged rigging in several other polling booths across West Bengal like Ranaghat Uttar Para booth and Chakdaha assembly booth.

Sri Lanka bans the Burqa among all other means of covering the face by a presidential decree

Sri Lanka has introduced a ban on all types of face coverings including Burqas to ensure public safety. The order is to be enforced from today, as per reports.

As per reports, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has approved the ban and issued a presidential decree stating that all forms of face covering, including the Burqa, will be completely prohibited from Monday.

The decision comes a week after major terrorist bomb blasts had ripped through the capital city Colombo and surrounding areas, killing over 300 people and injuring more than 500.

As per reports, the official press release of the presidential decree read, “Any form of face covering that will hinder the identification of a person is banned under emergency regulations.”

The move was reportedly first proposed as a private member’s bill in the Sri Lankan parliament by MP Ashu Marasinghe who had sought a motion to ban the Burqa stating that it is not a traditional Muslim garment and it should be banned on security grounds.

Sri Lanka has declared a state of emergency after the deadly attacks on Easter Sunday by an ISIS supported organisation. Wide-scale crackdown on radical groups is going on in the country. It was reported that the local terrorist group National Thowheed Jama’ath had carried out the attacks that primarily targeted Churches and hotels. Later, ISIS had claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Previously, a prominent Muslim organisation All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama had issued a directive to all Muslims, especially women to stop covering their faces so the security forces are not hindered “in their efforts to maintain national security”.

There were also reports that PM Ranil Wickremasinghe was to oppose the ban on face coverings. He has, however, reportedly denied the claims and said that he will discuss the ban with the minister of justice.

The Sri Lankan government had admitted that there was major security failure on the part of the government and they had received prior warnings from intelligence agencies that such attacked would take place. Reports have stated that the Indian RAW had warned of possible terrorist attacks to the Sri Lankan government.

Poll violence in West Bengal: TMC workers attack BJP workers in Asansol, BJP candidate Babul Supriyo’s car vandalised

In a shocking incident of violence in West Bengal, party workers belonging to Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) have reportedly attacked Union Minister Babul Supriyo in Asansol and damaged his vehicle while he was on his way to a polling booth in Barabani.

According to the reports, BJP Asansol candidate Babul Supriyo had visited a polling booth in Asansol constituency after villagers had threatened to boycott polls following the non-deployment of central forces in some polling booths.

The TMC workers clashed with BJP workers who were demanding for central forces to be deployed near polling booths. Clashes were also reported between TMC workers and the security personnel. During this incident, TMC workers have allegedly resorted to vandalism and damaged Babul Supriyo‘s car which was outside the polling station.

The Quick Reaction Forces (QRF) and security personnel outside polling booth number 125-129 in Asansol dispersed the crowd after they lathi-charged outside polling booth number 125-129 in Asansol following the clashes between TMC workers and the BJP cadres.

Clashes between TMC workers and security personnel outside booth numbers 125-129 in Asansol took place after a disagreement erupted between BJP and CPI(M) workers and TMC workers. The TMC workers were insisting that the polling take place despite the absence of central forces.

Violence in West Bengal: While voters boycott polls in Asansol over non-deployment of central forces, crude bombs found elsewhere

The trends of political violence and intimidations during the 2019 Lok Sabha election have continued in West Bengal as crude bombs have been found at a polling booth in Krishnanagar, West Bengal and also bombs have been recovered from a polling booth in Santipur, Nadia district.

Further, fearing attacks on them, villagers in Asansol have decided to boycott polls at Jemua’s five polling booth due to the absence of central forces at the polling station. Reportedly, people are upset that they are no central police forces in these booths and have decided not to until the election officials deploy central forces to guard the polling booths.

Violence also erupted in Jemua area in Asansol Parliamentary constituency as the police resorted to lathi-charge against the supporters of party workers for protesting and shouting slogans. BJP supporters were shouting slogans when a few people attacked them with bamboo sticks.

The clashes took place when the voters were observing a poll boycott in the Bardhaman – Durgapur constituency in the state. The police resorted to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control, reported India Today.

“I will myself take the central forces to that polling station. It is very good that people in West Bengal are aware and they want central forces so that they can cast their vote. This is why Mamata Banerjee is scared,” said Asansol BJP candidate Babul Supriyo.

Union Minister Babul Supriyo is contesting from the BJP for his second term from Asansol while Trinamool Congress has fielded actor-turned-politician Moon Moon Sen against Babul Supriyo.

Meanwhile, Kalyan Chaubey, the BJP candidate from Krishnanagar has accused Trinamool Congress workers of capturing polling booths in Chapra, Bikrampur, Dogachi, Kanainagar in Krishananagar Lok Sabha constituency.

He also accused the West Bengal police of threatening BJP polling agents and workers at the polling booth at Bilkumari village in Palashipara assembly constituency under Krishananagar LS Constituency.

TMC Birbhum district president kept on tight EC leash till April 30th after poll workers express fear of him threatening them if let loose

As the fourth phase of Lok Sabha polling is underway in the country today, the Election Commission has decided to keep controversial TMC leader Anubrata Mondal from West Bengal on a tight leash until the morning of April 30th. This decision taken by the Election Commission on Sunday comes after the representatives of the poll workers expressed fear of the leader and said they would feel threatened if the TMC Birbhum district president keeps moving from one booth to the other on the polling day.

On Sunday evening, the Election Commission representatives officially met Anubrata Mondal and asked him to deposit his cell phones. He was requested to cooperate with the District Magistrate and informed that a jawan of the Central Paramilitary Forces will keep a close watch on him until the morning of 30th April 2019. Election Commission officials clarified that this is not exactly a ‘house arrest’ because he is free to move anywhere under the supervision and that every move of his will be videographed.

A defiant Anubrata Mondal told CNN News 18, “Such a directive is not going to have any impact on the TMC’s vote share. I personally feel that EC’s surveillance on me will increase our vote share. If they want to take my mobile phones, I don’t have any problem as I can use any other phones. As far as ‘close watch’ on me is a concern, I have a principle that during polls I don’t go anywhere. I sit at the party office. I don’t keep my job pending for polling day”.

He then cryptically said that he has given medicine to all those with headache, body aches etc and he hopes the polling will be good. He added that this ban won’t have any effect since all the work related to polling had already been done.

In fact, there was police posted outside the BJP office in Birbhum where it was alleged that TMC goons had ransacked the office. Mondal had denied the allegation and instead, said that BJP is orchestrating these attacks just to “grab attention”.

Considering two seats in Birbhum district which are Birbhum and Bolpur are voting currently, this restriction on Anubrata Mondal could spell doom for Mamata Banerjee led TMC. Currently, TMC rules in both these seats and the victory is often and largely credited to Mondal.

In 2016 too, during the West Bengal Assembly polls, Anubrata Mondal had been put under 24-hour surveillance by the Election Commission.

In July 2013, he had asked his supporters at a public meeting in Birbhum to hurl bombs at the police and burn down houses of rebel TMC candidates in panchayat elections.

In September 2018, he was caught on camera allegedly instructing TMC workers to get a party rebel and a woman BJP leader arrested on a false case of possessing cannabis.

In April 2019, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal made an appeal to the Election Commission (EC) officials to let him rig the polls and allow his people to “manage” 500-600 votes per booth.

The Trinamool Congress is notoriously known for electoral violence and other illegalities on the day of the elections. Last year, TMC had won 20,000 seats uncontested in West Bengal Panchayat elections amidst the allegations that the party which fielded its candidates on all rural seats, had prevented the filing of nominations by resorting to violence. The BJP had moved the Supreme Court to interfere in the matter of its party workers not being allowed to file nominations for the Panchayat elections.

Fearing serious violence and electoral irregularities in the West Bengal, the Election Commission of India decided to hold the elections in the state in seven phases starting from April 11 to May 19. The results of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections will be declared on May 23
